Fortlaufend wird in der Premier League an der Liga-Struktur gearbeitet. Bei einer Aktionärsversammlung in London am Montag wurde erneut über eine Ausgabenobergrenze diskutiert. Diese soll nun auf der Jahreshauptversammlung der Liga im Juni zur Abstimmung gestellt werden.

Besagte Grenze soll die Ausgaben der Vereine an einen bestimmten Prozentsatz ihrer Einnahmen koppeln. Wäre das Gesetz beispielsweise in der vergangenen Saison in Kraft gewesen, hätte die Obergrenze 518 Millionen Pfund betragen – das Fünffache der 103,6 Millionen Pfund, die Schlusslicht Southampton aus zentralisierten TV-Einnahmen erzielte.

Nach übereinstimmenden englischen Medienberichten ist in der Premier League bereits eine Mehrheit gefunden. Hauptsächlich stimmen freilich Klubs dafür, die sich in der unteren Tabellenhälfte befinden und die das ohnehin schon fragile Wettbewerbsgleichgewicht der Liga in Frage stellen.

Das Besondere am angestrebten Modell: Es wäre das erste, das die Ausgaben eines Klubs an die Einnahmen eines anderen Vereins bindet, während etwa das Financial Fairplay auf den eigenen Einnahmen eines Klubs basiert. Die Ausgabenobergrenze würde indes die bisher geltenden Profitabilitäts- und Nachhaltigkeitsregeln ersetzen, die für die jüngsten Punktabzüge des FC Everton und bei Nottingham Forest verantwortlich waren.

Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Premier League “in Gefahr”?

Laut BBC sollen lediglich Manchester United, Manchester City und Aston Villa am Montag gegen die mögliche Einführung besagter Ausgabenobergrenze gestimmt haben. Der FC Chelsea habe sich zudem enthalten. ManUnited, so berichtet es The Athletic, wehre sich vor allem gegen den Vorschlag, weil sich dieser möglicherweise negativ auf die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Premier League auswirken könnte.

Auch die Spielergewerkschaft PFA beäugt den Vorstoß kritisch. Ein PFA-Sprecher erklärte bereits: “Wir werden natürlich weitere Details zu diesen spezifischen Vorschlägen abwarten, aber wir haben immer klar gesagt, dass wir jede Maßnahme ablehnen würden, die eine harte Obergrenze für Spielergehälter vorsehen würde.”

WSL round-up: City six points clear at the top, Arsenal suffer title blow

Manchester City kept up the heat on their rivals in the Women’s Super League title race with a crushing victory over Bristol City, who were relegated as a result.

And they duly delivered an emphatic 4-0 win, although they were made to work hard for it given the game was all-square at half time.

Indeed, it was not until after the hour mark when Mary Fowler finally broke the deadlock, brilliantly finding the top corner with a fierce strike.

That opened the floodgates and the 21-year-old grabbed her second of the night shortly afterwards, this time converting from Lauren Hemp’s pass.

And to rub salt into the wound, Bristol City’s Amy Rogers inadvertently added a third two minutes later when she put through her own net, while captain Alex Greenwood completed the rout with a towering header that proved to be the last touch of the game.

The Robins needed to win the game to have any chance of remaining in the WSL next season, but having accumulated just six points from their previous 19 outings, survival always looked unlikely.

As such, they have now been relegated back to the Championship, the division from which they were promoted last season.

City, on the other hand, remain on course to finish in top spot, as they open up a six-point gap on second-placed Chelsea, who have an inferior goal difference.

It also sets up a blockbuster clash against Arsenal next weekend, where Taylor’s side will be attempting to earn a WSL-record 15th successive victory.

The Manchester club have only lifted one previous WSL title, back in 2016, but confidence is now growing that they can double that tally.

16-year-old Hobson makes WSL history for Everton

Elsewhere, struggling Everton picked up a surprise point at home to third-placed Arsenal, who suffered another blow in their title ambitions.

The Gunners could have drawn level on points with Chelsea in second with a win, and were heading to victory when Alessia Russo opened the scoring in the 80th minute.

Their hosts were determined not to go down without a fight though and they duly grabbed an equaliser with just seconds of added time remaining.

Issy Hobson, just 16, was the Toffees hero, coming off the bench to head home to make it 1-1, becoming the WSL’s youngest ever goalscorer in the process.

There was also a super-sub on show for Manchester United, with Ella Toone’s goal seven minutes from time earning a 1-0 victory over Leicester City.

As such, the Red Devils moved three points clear of Liverpool in fourth place.

West Ham United, meanwhile, came from 1-0 down to draw 1-1 against Aston Villa, as Shannon Cooke scored deep into added time to earn a crucial point in their relegation fight.

Alisha Lehmann had earlier put the hosts ahead but their winless run extended to four matches.

Brighton and Spurs also played out a 1-1 draw, with Bethany England’s late goal salvaging a point following Elisabeth Terland’s opener.

Palace promoted to WSL – “I don’t think anyone expected this”

With the relegation spot in the WSL now sewn up, Bristol City’s replacement in the top flight was also confirmed as Crystal Palace booked their ticket to the WSL.

A 0-0 draw against Sunderland was enough for the Eagles to secure the Championship title.

A club-record crowd of 6,796 were in attendance at Selhurst Park to see history being made.

It is the first time the club have reached the WSL and comes on the back of finishing fifth last season.

But after accumulating 46 points from their 22 matches, Laura Kaminski’s side clinched the title, finishing narrowly ahead of Charlton Athletic.

Speaking to BBC Sport, captain Aimee Everett said: “At the start of the season there were a lot of changes.

“Honestly, I don’t think anyone expected this would have been the outcome, but this is what everyone wanted to achieve.”

Nach Verhandlungen in London: Amorim entschuldigt sich

Es sollte eigentlich ein heimlicher Kurztrip werden, doch das Ergebnis sah anders aus: Als Ruben Amorim am Dienstag um kurz nach Mitternacht wieder in Portugal landete, wartete am Flughafen bereits eine Journalistenschar auf ihn. Der Erfolgstrainer von Sporting Lissabon war nach London geflogen, um, wie sich bald herausstellte, Gespräche mit West Ham United zu führen – und das wenige Tage bevor seine Mannschaft die Meisterschaft perfekt machen kann.

Nachdem er am Flughafen noch jeglichen Kommentar verweigert hatte, sprach er das Thema am Samstag selbst an und entschuldigte sich öffentlich. “Meine Reise war ein Fehler, das Timing war völlig falsch”, erklärte der 39-Jährige reumütig. “Vor allem, wenn ich so hohe Ansprüche an meine Spieler habe.” Er sei der Erste, der sie stets daran erinnere, dass der Einzelne nicht über dem Team stehe. “Ich habe schon Spieler für deutlich weniger aus der Mannschaft genommen.”

Bei West Ham steht Moyes auf der Kippe

Amorim betonte allerdings, dass Sportings Klubführung über seine Reise informiert gewesen sei. Laut A Bola hatte West Ham diese organisiert. Die Hammers sondieren gerade den Trainermarkt, weil David Moyes nach einer durchwachsenen Saison auf der Kippe steht.

Amorim, der schon in den Wochen zuvor ein Bekenntnis zu seinem Arbeitgeber vermieden hatte und angeblich eine Ausstiegsklausel in seinem Vertrag hat, schien zunächst beim FC Liverpool weit oben auf der Wunschliste zu stehen. Inzwischen läuft aber alles darauf hinaus, dass Feyenoord-Trainer Arne Slot Nachfolger von Jürgen Klopp in Anfield wird.

2020/21 hatte Amorim Sporting in seiner ersten vollständigen Saison im Amt zur ersten Meisterschaft seit 19 Jahren geführt. Schon an diesem Wochenende könnte der nächste Titel folgen. Jürgen Klopps Traum vom Abschied mit dem Premier-League-Titel ist wohl endgültig geplatzt. Denn Liverpool ließ auch bei West Ham Punkte liegen.

Ausgerechnet im Merseyside-Derby (0:2) hatte Liverpool am Mittwoch womöglich den Premier-League-Titel verspielt. Wie groß die Enttäuschung war, verdeutlichten die Worte von Jürgen Klopp: “Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass ich jemals nach einem Spiel so enttäuscht und frustriert war wie nach dem Everton-Spiel. Wir waren nicht da”, so der LFC-Trainer.

Um die “schnellstmögliche Wende” herbeizuführen, rotierte Klopp ordentlich durch. Gleich fünf Wechsel nahm er vor: Unter anderem verdrängten Gakpo, Elliott und Gravenberch Salah, Darwin sowie Szoboszlai auf die Bank. Einer der Neuen verbuchte auch gleich die erste Torannäherung: Elliott traf nur das Außennetz (11.). Ansonsten fehlte den Reds trotz der Dominanz (alleine 75 Prozent Ballbesitz in den ersten zehn Minuten) gegen die tief stehenden Hammers im letzten Drittel über weite Strecke die nötigen Ideen.

Liverpools Elfmeter wird zurückgenommen

Sobald es gefährlich wurde, hatte Luis Diaz seine Füße im Spiel. So legte er Kolumbianer beispielsweise auf Gakpo quer, den Ogbonna regelwidrig im Sechzehner zu Fall brachte. Da aber Luis Diaz zuvor im Abseits gestanden hatte, nahm Schiedsrichter Anthony Taylor den Strafstoß zurück (27.). Nachdem Alisson auf der Gegenseite Coufals abgefälschten Schuss festgehalten hatte (31.), stand Luis Diaz erneut im Mittelpunkt. Diesmal traf er den Pfosten (41.).

Kaltschnäuziger zeigte sich zwei Minuten später auf der Gegenseite Bowen – allerdings auch mit der Unterstützung von Liverpool, das wie beim FC Everton eine Standardsituation schlecht verteidigte: Der Außenspieler nickte nach eine zuvor kurz ausgeführte Ecke zur 1:0-Halbzeitführung ein (43.).

Eigentor bringt Reds zwischenzeitlich in Führung

In der Kabine schien Klopp die richtigen Worte gefunden zu haben: Obwohl er auf Wechsel verzichtete, kam sein Team mit mehr Energie aus raus. Die Belohnung folgte prompt durch Robertsons Ausgleich (48.). Beinahe hätten die Gäste sogar gleich doppelt zugeschlagen, Gravenberch traf den Ball aber nicht vernünftig (51.).

Doch das 2:1 lag weiterhin in der Luft, da die Reds die Londoner völlig in deren Hälfte drückten. Aufgrund des Aufwands verdienten sie sich daher auch den in der Entstehung glücklich zustande gekommenen Führungstreffer. Gakpos eigentlich ungefährlicher Abschluss landete über Ogbonnas Brust, Souceks Fuß und Areolas Ellenbogen im Netz (65.).

Die Hammers mussten anschließend natürlich mehr riskieren und offenbarten daher Räume, die Liverpool gut bespielte. Allerdings setzten die Gäste nicht den entscheidenden Stich: Beispielsweise scheiterte Luis Diaz an Areola (73.). Dies sollte sich rächen: In einer kurzen Angriffswelle köpfte Antonio ein (77.), nachdem Alisson wenige Augenblicke zuvor noch das 2:2 verhindert hatte (76.).

Salah und Klopp liefern sich einen Disput

Klopp brachte daraufhin unter anderem den aufgebrachten Salah (79.), der sich mit seinem Coach kurz vor der Einwechslung noch ein Wortgefecht geliefert hatte. Doch der späte Siegtreffer sollte nicht mehr fallen – auch, weil Elliott nur die Latte traf (90.).

Durch das 2:2 verabschiedete sich die Klopp-Elf wohl endgültig aus dem Titelrennen: Zwei Punkte beträgt der Rückstand nun auf Arsenal, das noch eine Partie in der Hinterhand besitzt. Das einen Zähler entfernte ManCity absolvierte bislang sogar noch zwei Spiele weniger als der LFC.

Für Liverpool geht es nächste Woche Sonntag mit dem Heimspiel gegen die Spurs weiter (17.30 Uhr). Ein paar Stunden vorher gastieren die Hammers beim Chelsea FC (15 Uhr).

But Michail Antonio popped up on 77 minutes to power home a Bowen cross in earning West Ham a point that never looked likely after being pressed back for large swathes of the second half.

Liverpool remain third in the table, two points behind Arsenal before Mikel Arteta’s side visit Tottenham on Sunday with champions Manchester City a point better off before their trip to Nottingham Forest.

A frustrating day of missed opportunity for Liverpool was perhaps best summed up by manager Jurgen Klopp and substitute Mo Salah exchanging words in the aftermath of Antonio’s equaliser for the home side.

“We’re in a very, very difficult position. If Arsenal win, it is five points and Man City have some games in hand. Not impossible, but very difficult,” conceded Cody Gakpo on TNT Sports.

West Ham stay eighth on 49 points from 35 games, with the excellent Bowen equalling Paolo Di Canio’s record total of 16 goals for the Hammers in a Premier League season.

Talking Point: Why was Gakpo denied chance of late winner?

Referee Anthony Taylor was caught up in controversy as he blew the whistle to stop play with Cody Gakpo apparently set to slot the winning goal late on.

West Ham goalkeeper Areola dropped the ball to his feet after apparently recovering from injury, but Taylor had been playing advantage due to an earlier infringement against the home side and opted to blow his whistle when he realised West Ham were no longer gaining an advantage.

In the spirit of the game, it would not have been correct for Taylor to allow Gakpo to score, but the easiest way to solve the confusion was to forget playing advantage and immediately award West Ham a free-kick before Areola needed treatment.

Player of the Match: Luis Díaz (Liverpool)

How Diaz left London without helping his side to three points is a minor mystery. The Colombian winger hit the post in the first half before playing provider for Andy Robertson’s equaliser and generally causing West Ham all sorts of problems with an outstanding display. Only the brilliance of Areola in the West Ham goal denied him seconds before the home side equalised.
