Exclusive: Real Madrid want ‘revenge’ after last year’s ‘thrashing’ by City – Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger, speaking exclusively to TNT Sports, admits Real Madrid will be out for “revenge” when they face Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

That paved the way for the Citizens to lift the European Cup for the first time in their history, en route to a magnificent treble.

The first leg of this year’s re-match takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.

And Rudiger admits the result 12 months ago – and particularly their 4-0 thrashing in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium – will be in the back of Real Madrid’s minds when the sides face off again.

He told TNT Sports: “I think from both sides, there’s a lot of respect for the history because both teams are packed with amazing players and there’s the feeling of last season, of course, something which was a thrashing. We’re looking forward to this game.”

On the topic of revenge, the German defender admitted: “Last year, it was tough.

“It was a tough moment. And so of course there’s a little bit of wanting revenge.”

Bernardo Silva netted twice in last year’s clash at the Etihad, while Manuel Akanji and Julien Alvarez were also on target for the hosts.

That came after Kevin De Bruyne had scored in Spain, following Vinicius Junior’s opener in a 1-1 draw in Madrid.

Rudiger says that shows how many players Los Blancos need to keep an eye on aside from Erling Haaland, who went goalless across the two legs.

“This is the thing about this stage,” he continued. “You want to compete against the best. Last year, they were the best in Europe so it’s good to compete against a lot of good players.

He continued: “It’s not only him [Haaland]. You have to keep the people around him very quiet, which is not an easy job.

“You have to try to prevent them passing them ball to him so then I think you are a step closer to reach the target.”

Real Madrid are a fearsome side themselves, with England star Jude Bellingham leading the way in his first season in Spain.

Youngsters Vinicius Jr., Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrgyo are all under 24 as well, yet play a crucial role in Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Rudiger believes that shows that the club have an impressive crop of youngsters of their own to call upon.

“The young guns here are very mature,” he added. “If you speak to Jude Bellingham, you can see he’s very mature for his age.

“For them, the sky is not the limit. They go even above that. This is good, because, I have to be honest, when I was at their age, I thought the sky was the limit and that’s it.

“They have a lot of confidence, but like positive confidence, not in a bad way.”

Real, who are well rested after a nine-day break, are chasing a treble of their own this year, as they have already lifted the Supercopa de Espana and currently sit six points clear at the top of La Liga.

It is the Champions League that supporters crave most though, as Los Blancos attempt to add to their record haul of European Cups.

“It’s clear, because the people have won it 14 times already, so they’re kind of used to it,” Rudiger concluded. “It’s something you don’t even need to speak [about]. You see it here on the wall. That says everything.

He added: “It’s an advantage in terms of we are rested, maybe. But in these types of games, it’s about small details. You have to get those right and, of course, in these type of games there’s also a bit of luck.”

Exclusive: Ancelotti says Madrid young guns the best he’s ever coached

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes the current group of young players he has at his disposal in the Spanish capital is the best he’s ever worked with in his 32-year managerial career.

The Spanish giants have a compelling blend of experience and youth in their first-team squad, with a number of their younger stars grabbing the headlines most frequently this season.

At just 20 years old, Jude Bellingham has enjoyed a remarkable first campaign with the club since joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, proving he is a player for the big time with 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions from 32 appearances.

But he isn’t the only youngster with star quality. As well as the Englishman, Eduardo Camavinga is 21, while Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo are both 23.

Between them, the quartet have netted 53 times and been instrumental in helping Madrid open up an eight-point cushion over Barcelona at the top of La Liga, and secure their team’s place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they face Manchester City on Tuesday in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It’s little wonder, then, why Ancelotti, a manager who has worked with some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, rates them so highly.

Asked if this is the most exciting group of young players he has had at his disposal, he told TNT Sports: “Yes, I think so.

“In my career I’ve had a lot of young players but this group is really good in my opinion and it will be a great future for this club [and] for these players because they are really good.

“They have no experience but they have a lot of enthusiasm and we have a good connection between the veterans and the younger [players]. In the last two or three years, the connection from them was really good.”

The Italian will be relying on his side to be at their very best when they take on UEFA Champions League holders City.

It is a repeat of the 2022 and 2023 semi-finals, which were shared one apiece by the two clubs, but Ancelotti will be eager to make amends for last season’s 4-0 drubbing at the Etihad.

Each game is a “different story”, though, according to Ancelotti, and the 64-year-old has complete faith in his players.

“City is always a tough game but as the last two years we can compete, we want to compete,” Ancelotti added. “Of course we want to go through because this club, we love this competition and we want to arrive at the end.

“When we played in Manchester we were not in the game. Of course, we have worked to try an avoid this kind of situation that was not good for us.

“I think we had the time to prepare well for this game and I have a lot of confidence that the team can play to 100 per cent of our possibility.

“It is a difficult game, yes, maybe the most difficult game but we are going to play with a lot of confidence.”

The clash of titans will also bring up a significant milestone for Ancelotti, who will become the first manager to reach 200 games in Europe’s greatest club competition.

“I could feel old but I feel young,” he continued. “I started as a player, winning the Champions League; as a manager, winning [the Champions League].

“Two hundred games is a lot of games, and it is a really special competition for me.”

The first leg of Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City is live on TNT Sports 2 and discovery+, with coverage getting underway at 19:00.
