India Football: Iconic Argentina club to help set up world-class football academy in Kozhikode

Iconic Argentina club, Argentinos Juniors are set to make a foray into India as they reportedly will enter into a partnership with Malabar Sports and Recreation Foundation (MSRF) to ensure that the city of Kozhikode gets a world class academy of their own.

Argentinos Juniors, who have produced legends like Diego Maradona and Juan Román Riquelme through their partnership with MSRF aim to mould a generation of well-trained, goaloriented young players in the 10-18 year age group – with the academy set to be launched in September this year.

“The goal of the venture is to train players at the grassroots level and play in the 2031 under- 20 World Cup and 2034 World Cup and hone their minds with quality-based methodology,” former Ambassador of India to Guatemala and MSRF MD and CEO, Sajeev Babu Kurup said as quoted by New Indian Express.

A two-year contract between Argentinos Juniors and MSRF will be signed on May 10 in Kozhikode, with two consultant coaches expected to facilitate the coaching and training of young talents as well as local coaches.

As many as 125 players are expected to be trained in the first phase, with the likes of former India International goalkeeper Victor Manjila, Argentinos Juniors vice- president Javier Pederzoli, board member Kevin Libsfraint and Sajeev Babu Kurup expected to be present at the event where the contract signing will take place.

AS

Stoute sights set on Sandown for Bay Bridge return

Bay Bridge, the exciting Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt who won all four of his starts last year, is set to make his seasonal bow in the Coral Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown.

Last May, the son of New Bay was an impressive four-length winner of Newbury’s London Gold Cup – traditionally one of the season’s most informative three-year-old handicaps – but as ante-post favourite, was ruled out of the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot with a foot abscess.

He returned in October to score in a competitive handicap at York and followed up with a workmanlike success in the Listed James Seymour Stakes at Newmarket.

Now, Bay Bridge will bid to give Stoute a record 12th success in the 10-furlong Group Three event at the Esher track on May 26.

Stoute said: “Bay Bridge is going to go to Sandown for the Brigadier Gerard. He is almost ready to come out. He has had a good preparation and now it is time to get down to work.

“We will worry about any targets after he runs at Sandown. As always, we take it one race at a time.”

Stoute is also mulling over options for Lights On, who impressed when beating Mutasaabeq by a neck in the Group Two bet365 Mile at Sandown.

The master of Freemason Lodge Stables is keeping an eye on the weather before making firm plans for the five-year-old daughter of Siyouni.

“Lights On did it really well at Sandown,” said Stoute. “She doesn’t want the ground too fast, so she will be ground dependent. She doesn’t need it soft, but she doesn’t want it quick, either.”

Stoute is “still thinking” about her next possible target, which could include a possible tilt at the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, for which she is currently a general 20/1 chance.

However, he ruled her out of Epsom, adding: “We will have another Cheveley Park filly to go to Epsom.

Potapova was beaten a short head at Kempton last time (in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes) and she will go to Epsom for the (Group Three) Princess Elizabeth Stakes (on June 4).”

Prandelli offers some advice to struggling Vlahovic

Cesare Prandelli looked to defend Dusan Vlahovic following his poor performance in Juventus’ 2-1 loss to Genoa on Friday.

The 64-year-old Italian coach resigned as Viola coach in March last year but has fond memories of the 22-year-old Serbian striker, who exploded in Florence that season with his devastating eye for goal. Things have been a little more difficult for Vlahovic following his move to Turin and he’s starting to receive some criticism for poor performances.

Speaking to Tuttosport, Prandelli first discussed Vlahovic’s €80m move to Juventus.

“As soon as he arrived at Juventus in the January market, he inevitably felt a great responsibility because so much was expected of him.

“And paradoxically, the fact that he started at the top, scoring a lot right away, put him in a condition where people were led to think that he could solve Juventus’ problems all by himself, right away.”

Prandelli then looked to offer some advice to the 22-year-old Serbian striker.

“The only advice I can give him is to stay calm, also because he is a real champion, so he will score a lot of goals.”

The 22-year-old Vlahovic scored 17 goals in the first half of the Serie A season for Fiorentina but has only netted six times in the league since making the move over to Juventus in January. He had a particularly invisible performance in the 2-1 loss to Genoa and appeared visibly frustrated on the bench after being substituted.

Criscito reveals why he turned down Toronto FC

Domenico Criscito revealed that he turned down an offer from Toronto FC in the January transfer window in order to help in Genoa’s bid to avoid relegation.

The 35-year-old Italian defender’s contract expires with the Rossoblu next year and MLS side Toronto were keen to pick him up in January, adding an experienced player to their backline. The Canadian side also confirmed Lorenzo Insigne’s move on a free transfer in that period and it was clear that they had their eyes set on Serie A.

Speaking to Il Secolo XIX, Criscito discussed Toronto’s offer and why he turned it down.

“In 2018 I returned after seven years and in the past months I received an offer from Toronto, but it didn’t seem right to leave the team in these conditions. Then various injuries stopped me and I was so sorry not to have been able to help my teammates in so many games.”

The Genoa veteran then commented on the penalty he missed in the key 1-0 derby defeat to Sampdoria.

“It has been a very hard week. That penalty parried by Audero is a mistake I will always carry with me.”

Finally, Criscito commented on his successful penalty in the 2-1 comeback win over Juventus.

I only looked where the ball was, I went to get it to shoot. I just wanted to score, I had nothing else in my head.

What worked this time? I was calmer. And with Samp, the mistake was changing the corner at the last second. I shot badly, but yesterday it went well.

The 35-year-old Criscito may still join Toronto in the summer but there’s no guarantee, so he’ll be praying that Genoa at least avoid suffering relegation following his decision. He has scored six goals and provided one assist in 18 Serie A appearances this season for the Ligurian side.
