Arsenal edge out Man Utd to keep pressure on Man City in title race

Arsenal regained top spot in the Premier League table courtesy of Leandro Trossard’s first-half winner in a 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford that keeps alive their title hopes.

Mikel Arteta’s side produced a functional rather than inspired display to move a point above Manchester City having played a game more than the defending champions after Trossard punished some slack United defending by tapping home Kai Havertz’s cutback on 20 minutes.

It was only Arsenal’s second league win at Old Trafford in the past 17 years, but the deserved victory again turns the focus on City, who visit Tottenham on Tuesday before hosting West Ham at the Etihad on the final day next Sunday.

Arsenal have won 15 out of their past 17 matches in the Premier League, but need City to drop points before Pep Guardiola’s team host Everton in their final match of the campaign next Sunday.

The Gunners are chasing a first title since 2004 and remain well in the hunt heading for the final day.

Player of the Match: William Saliba (Arsenal)

The Arsenal central defender just exudes confidence and class as his partnership with Gabriel was key to helping Arsenal see out the second half without too much fuss against a home side that did plenty of huffing and puffing yet could only two shots at goal in a fairly routine outing for Mikel Arteta’s side, who should probably have scored a few more.

Match Highlights

20′ GOAL! MAN UNITED 0-1 ARSENAL (TROSSARD) Casemiro plays on Arsenal as Havertz dashes to the byline before crossing for Trossard to tap the ball home. All too easy for the visitors, who lead 1-0. United all over the show.

66′ ONANA ON POINT FOR UNITED The home goalkeeper diving low to his right to collect the shot by Martin Odegaard after some intelligent link-up work by Havertz. Who else you might ask. Still 1-0 to the Gunners.

83′ SAKA IS INJURED AND LOOKS SET TO COME OFF Gunners down to 10 men momentarlly as Martinelli comes up with a brilliant piece of forward play to earn his side a corner. Saka clashes with McTominay. Sore one on the knee and is replaced by Gabriel Jesus.

85′ RICE WITH A SWERVING EFFORT AT GOAL Got plenty of power on the finish from distance, but Onana does well to fist the ball away with his left paw as he dived to his left. Still a 1-0 lead for Arsenal.

81′ MARTINELLI WITH A STUNNING RUN AND HIT Superb save by Onana to tip the shot over the bar. Exceptional piece of goalkeeping as Martinelli looked to ease the Arsenal nerves. That second goal would relieve the tension.

Real Madrid romp to win on the road at Granada

Real Madrid enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 win away to Granada in their first La Liga game since being crowned champions after the hosts had been relegated to the second division earlier in the day.

Carlo Ancelotti was able to rest his star players with a UEFA Champions League final on the horizon as he made 10 changes from the team that started against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Brahim Diaz’s excellent second-half brace, with a moment of individual quality before rounding off an excellent team move earned him the Player of the Match award.

Francisco Garcia had opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half before turning provider as he set up Turkish youngster Arda Guler to double their lead on the stroke of half-time.

Myrto Uzuni had the best of the half-chances that fell for the hosts, who were perhaps somewhat deflated after seeing their fate to La Liga 2 sealed by Mallorca’s win in an earlier kick-off.

Talking Point – Diaz stakes a claim for final while Joselu loses momentum

With Girona’s victory over Barcelona last weekend securing Los Blancos the title, there was little pressure on this fixture and that will be the case for their final three league games ahead of the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

Therefore, it was unsurprising to see Ancelotti resting his key players and giving others a chance to impress, a pattern that is likely to continue ahead of the showdown piece at Wembley.

Diaz was one of those to snatch the opportunity and his two excellent goals that topped off a superb performance will have done him no harm in his efforts to start the final as Madrid look for their 15th Champions League title.

Conversely, Joselu will be disappointed with this evening’s work after such a euphoric night on Wednesday as his two goals turned the tie with Bayern Munich on its head to send Madrid through.

The 34-year-old striker was wasteful when chances fell to him and looked more desperate as the game went on to find the back of the net. The Spaniard will hope he can find his tenth league goal over the coming weeks to get him back on track.

Player of the Match – Brahim Diaz (Real Madrid)

Despite assured and dominant performances from Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric in midfield, Diaz caused problems all afternoon for the hosts. His driving runs at the heart of the Granada defence saw him play a role in all four goals and brought two yellow cards for Granada.

A superb solo goal as he took the ball on the half turn before once again running at the Granada back line and firing home before he finished off an excellent passing move from the visitors exemplified his high-quality performance.

Player Ratings

Granada: Batalla 7, Mendez, 5, Piatkowski, 7, Miquel, 6, Neva, 7, Ruiz 5, Gumbau 5, Pellistri 4, Jozwiak 6, Boye 6, Uzuni 7. Subs: Callejon 6, Hongla 5, Melendo 4, Sanches 6, Villar 4.

Real Madrid: Courtois 8, Vazquez 7, Militao, 7, Rudiger 7, Garcia 9, Modric 8, Camavinga 8, Ceballos 7, Guler 7, Joselu 6, Diaz 9. Subs: Nacho 7, Kroos 7.

Match Highlights

38′ – GOAL! Granada 0-1 Real Madrid (Garcia): Madrid work the ball excellently down their right-hand side. Diaz has the ball on the by-line and pulls it back across goal. It’s behind Modric but the onrushing Garcia hits it back across goal with his left foot to give Madrid the lead.

45+2′ – GOAL! Granada 0-2 Real Madrid (Guler): Garcia turns provider as he pulls it back and sets up Guler to take a touch and stroke home with his left foot into the bottom right corner for Madrid’s second.

49′ – GOAL! Granada 0-3 Real Madrid (Diaz): Diaz takes the ball beautifully on the half-turn before running at the Granada defence. He then fakes a shot to cut back on his right foot and sell the defence before striking past the keeper’s right into the near post.

58′ – GOAL! Granada 0-4 Real Madrid (Diaz): A delightful move from Madrid with each player taking one or touches results in Modric being slipped through in the right of the Granada box. The Croatian generously cuts it back to Diaz who takes a touch before converting for his second goal of the game.

Jackson strikes late as Chelsea recover to edge past Forest

Chelsea stayed in the hunt for European football with a late second-half comeback to beat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Nicolas Jackson headed in the 82nd-minute winner from a cross by substitute Reece James, just two minutes after Raheem Sterling had curled in the equaliser.

The visitors had taken the lead after just eight minutes, when Mykhailo Mudryk drilled in a low shot after a superb pass from Cole Palmer.

Willy Boly headed in a free kick to equalise just eight minutes later. In a frenetic second half, a nicely taken goal by Callum Hudson-Odoi looked like it might give Forest the win, until Chelsea’s two quick late strikes changed everything.

Results early in the day had all but secured Forest’s place in the Premier League next season, with Burnley and Luton both losing their games.

Forest’s goal difference is superior to Luton’s by 13, meaning a huge and unlikely swing is required on the final day to send them down.

TALKING POINT

Can Chelsea secure European football next season? That’s three wins in a row now for Chelsea, who have been one of the form teams in the final third of the season. One reason for their freshness might lie in the absence of what they’re currently chasing.

After all the investment of the last few years, back-to-back seasons without European football would seem unthinkable at Stamford Bridge. Until their recent late charge it was looking like a reality, but Mauricio Pochettino’s team are bang in form and now level on points with Newcastle, who stay ahead of them on goal difference.

What positions secure European football and in which competitions still needs to be decided, but Chelsea have elbowed their way into the argument with two games to go. It’s Brighton first on Wednesday, and then Bournemouth at home to finish; two massive games for the future of this young team.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Whether from behind the front three or from wide on the left, Palmer was a constant menace to Forest and set up a superb opening goal for Mudryk. He looks certain to be voted the Young Player of the Year, and be integral to Chelsea long term. Given the form he’s in, he may well force his way into Gareth Southgate’s first team in Germany this summer.

PLAYER RATINGS

Nottingham Forest: Sels 6; Montiel 6, Boly 7, Murillo 6, Niakhate 6, Aina 6; Gibbs-White 7, Yates 6, Danilo 6, Hudson-Odoi 7; Wood 5

SUBS: Awoniyi 6, Toffolo 6, Dominguez 6, Elanga 6

Chelsea: Petrovic 6; Chalobah 6, Thiago Silva 7, Badiashile 6, Cucurella 6; Caicedo 6, Gallagher 6, Palmer 8; Madueke 5, Jackson 7, Mudryk 7

SUBS: Gusto 7, James 7, Sterling 7, Nkunku 6

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

8′ GOAL! NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0 CHELSEA 1 (MUDRYK 8) Chelsea come out of hiding, and open the scoring with a beauty. Palmer daggers a ball through the inside left channel that releases Mudryk into the Forest area. Mudryk cuts onto his right foot, and glides a low shot past Sels.

16′ GOAL! NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1 (BOLY 16) CHELSEA 1 This is so simple! Gibbs-White lofts the free kick to the back post, where Boly is completely unmarked. He plants a header at goal and it catches a slight nick off Gallagher before flying in at the near post. It’s VAR checked for an age, but Boly was onside and it stands.

74′ GOAL! NOTTINGHAM FOREST 2 (HUDSON-ODOI 74) CHELSEA 1 It’s been coming. Gibbs-White finds Hudson-Odoi near the left corner of the Forest area. Hudson-Odoi cuts inside, across Gusto, and curls a glorious shot into the bottom corner. It’s his signature move, and it’s so hard to stop.

80′ GOAL! NOTTINGHAM FOREST 2 CHELSEA 2 (STERLING 80) We’re level! Chelsea work the ball to Sterling on the left of the Forest area. He cuts in, and past Aina, before drilling a low curler of his own into the bottom corner!

82′ GOAL! NOTTINGHAM FOREST 2 CHELSEA 3 (JACKSON 82) Oh I say, Chelsea lead! It’s a lovely move, with Gusto releasing James into acres down the right. The cross from James is perfect; first time, on the run, and on the half-volley to the back post. Jackson meets it, and plants his header into the net.

Burnley relegated as Van de Ven strikes late to arrest Spurs slide

Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, who resuscitated their top-four hopes.

The Clarets needed a victory to remain in with a chance of surviving and put themselves in the driving seat after Jacob Bruun Larsen opened the scoring.

However, it was all Spurs from then on and Pedro Porro’s bullet strike gave his side the equaliser before the break.

Defender Mickey van de Ven then wrapped up the three points for Ange Postecoglou’s men with a cool finish to confirm Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.

Spurs could still be playing UEFA Champions League football next season, but they must rely on Aston Villa dropping points.

Whilst Vincent Kompany and the Clarets will be disappointed with defeat and relegation it was always going to be a huge ask to come up and stay up given the level of quality in the league.

In fact, if it wasn’t for a string of points deductions from sides above them, they would have been down prior to today.

One consolation is that they will be one of the favourites to bounce straight back next season and they have the perfect manager and squad for it.

As for Spurs, victory sees them end their winless streak of four in the league. However, they will be frustrated they couldn’t put the game to bed sooner and lacked quality missing several chances.

Their rivals for the top four Villa have a tough game against Liverpool on Monday, and they could give Spurs every chance if they fail to win.

Talking Point – The Clarets’ fate is sealed

For a lot of Burnley fans, this was inevitable. Many thought they would be down sooner but an upturn in form led to an unbeaten April.

Ultimately though it wasn’t enough after a heavy defeat against Newcastle United and a loss today.

They will now have to regroup and go again in an unpredictable Championship next season, but if they can keep hold of their quality and experience on and off the pitch then they should be right up there.

Burnley’s owners are ambitious and despite being unable to keep they have the perfect manager in Kompany to continue to lead the project.

Player of the match – Micky van de Ven (Spurs)

The 23-year-old defender has been a delight to watch at Spurs this season and has a bright future ahead of him. Not only did he put in a resilient performance at the back today, he also grabbed the winner.

With full-back Emerson dropped for this game Van der Ven finished the game at left-back and still managed to find his way high up the pitch to fire home and secure the three points.

Player Ratings

Tottenham: Vicario (6), Porro (7), Romero (6), van de Ven (8), Skipp (7), Bissouma (6), Sarr (6), Kulusevski (7), Maddison (7), Johnson (7), Son (7).

Burnley: Muric (8), Assignon (5), O’Shea (6), Esteve (6), Taylor (6), Vitinho (7), Cullen (6), Berge (7), Bruun Larsen (7), Foster (6), Odobert (6), Benson (6), Tresor (5).

Match Highlights

25′ – GOAL! TOTTENHAM 0-1 BURNLEY (LARSEN): Spurs make it far too easy for Sander Berge with his pass reaching Bruun Larsen who finishes superbly past Vicario.

32 – GOAL! TOTTENHAM 1-1 BURNLEY (PORRO): Pedro Porro equalises for Spurs with a bullet strike beating Muric at his near post.

82 – GOAL! TOTTENHAM 2-1 BURNLEY (VAN DE VEN): Van De Ven takes the ball well to move past three players and score from the edge of the box.

Gvardiol scores brace as City take one step closer to history with win over Fulham

Josko Gvardiol continued his recent hot-streak in front of goal with a double and Phil Foden made it 25 for the season as Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table with a convincing 4-0 victory at Fulham.

The visitors quickly settled into their task of leapfrogging Arsenal at the summit with Gvardiol polishing off a slick move involving Kevin de Bruyne on 13 minutes.

Fulham struggled to get out of their own half for long spells and were fortunate not to go in at the break further behind with Manuel Akanji volleying a simple chance over the bar.

City were always comfortable but made sure there would be no twist to the script when Foden drilled a low 16-yard shot into the far corner just shy of the hour.

Gvardiol then made it five goals in his last seven matches when he expertly slid home Bernardo Silva’s cross 19 minutes from time.

Fulham had Issa Diop sent off in stoppage time and substitute Julian Alvarez converted the resulting spot kick to put the icing on the cake.

The result sees City move two points clear of rivals Arsenal with just two matches to play. Fulham remain 13th.

Talking Point – Man City’s inevitable surge to the finish line continues at apace

With one week to go, The Citizens are moving ever closer to becoming the first side to ever win four PL titles in a row.

All eyes will now switch to Arsenal’s must-win trip to Manchester United on Sunday, but the big one many have considered as potentially decisive in the race for quite some time, comes on Tuesday night when City visit Tottenham. Should Pep Guardiola’s men avoid a banana skin against a side they have had trouble against in the past, then they will head into the final day of the season at home to West Ham with their title fate firmly in their own hands.

Few expect the Citizens to slip now but Gunners fans will hope for one last dramatic twist and a maybe even an unlikely favour from Spurs. Will there be drama or another City procession? Watch this space….

Player of the match

Josko Gvardiol(Manchester City). The Croatia star has taken time to adapt in England and live up to his billing as one of the best young defenders in the world, but he’s now demonstrating his quality in a City shirt, both with and without the ball, on a consistent basis. Goals will always catch the eye, but his solid work in central or left-sided situations have made him invaluable to Guardiola and Co in the run-in.

Player Ratings

FULHAM: Leno 7, Castagne 5, Diop 4, Bassey 5, Robinson 6, Palhinha 6, De Cordova-Reid 5, Iwobi 5, Pereira 5, Willian 5, Muniz 5. Subs: Traore 6, Cairney 5, Wilson 5, Broja 5.

MAN CITY: Ederson 7, Akanji 7, Dias 7, Ake 6, Gvardiol 9, Rodri 8, Kovacic 7, De Bruyne 8, Bernardo 7, Foden 7, Haaland 7. Subs: Walker 7, Doku 6, Bobb n/a, Lewis n/a, Alvarez n/a.

Match Highlights

13’ – GOAL! – Fulham 0-1 Man City: (Gvardiol) A patient move ends with Gvardiol playing a delightful one-two with De Bruyne, cutting past the last defender and guiding a low shot into the corner.

59’ – GOAL! – Fulham 0-2 Man City: (Foden) It’s two! Foden seizes upon Bernardo’s blocked shot and squeezes a low shot into the far corner from just inside the area.

61’ – MANCHESTER CITY CHANCE! De Bruyne plays Haaland in on goal but he somehow contrives to flash his shot well wide. It really should be three.

71’ – GOAL! – Fulham 0-3 Man City: (Gvardiol) He’s at it again! The City defender slides in at the back stick to convert Bernardo Silva’s superb delivery from the right.

90+6’ – FULHAM RED CARD! Diop is sent off for a second bookable offence in conceding a last-gasp penalty for a foul on Alvarez.

90+7’ – GOAL! – Fulham 0-4 Man City: (Alvarez penalty) The Argentine sends the keeper the wrong way with a clinical spot kick.

Exclusive: Marco Silva on Adarabioyo transfer, replacing Mitrovic and more

Marco Silva believes Tosin Adarabioyo will “probably” leave Fulham at the end of the season, as the manager reflected on the “big challenge” of an equally impactful transfer saga last summer, in the form of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Fulham host Manchester City in the early kick-off this Saturday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+. The clash could carry huge ramifications in the Premier League title race, with City needing a victory to keep their destiny in their own hands.

If Pep Guardiola’s men were to draw, Arsenal would remain top on goal difference, knowing six points from their final two games would almost certainly seal a first title in two decades.

For Fulham, though, there is much less to play for – firmly in mid-table following a rollercoaster campaign. Indeed, The Whites are on a run of just one victory in seven, which comes after a burst of three wins in four games – including against Manchester United at Old Trafford and a demolition of Tottenham Hotspur.

After a brilliant 2022/23, which saw them finish in 10th place after promotion from the Championship, this term began in trickier fashion due to the departure of Mitrovic.

The enormous payday on offer at Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League was too big to turn down. He left West London with his name in the history books, having shattered Ivan Toney’s previous single-season record of 31 Championship goals, as the Serbian bagged 43.

In his absence, Fulham failed to win back-to-back games until December. The first time they scored more than one goal in a victory was in October, as the centre-forward ranks of Raul Jimenez, Carlos Vinicius and Rodrigo Muniz struggled to fire.

Reflecting on that period in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports, Silva told former Fulham captain Steve Sidwell: “It was a big challenge. It was difficult, I have to say.

“We really squeezed the maximum out of Mitro. He had his best moments with Fulham – 43 goals in the Championship, then last season 14 goals in 24 games. For the fans, the impact when he left the club [was felt]. Sometimes I compare to Brentford, without Toney for six months and the impact a player like him can have. Losing main strikers is difficult.

“We signed Raul Jimenez to have him in the squad with Mitro, not to replace Mitro. Everybody thought that was to replace Mitro – it wasn’t. The idea was to have him and Mitro in the squad, plus one young [player]. He went, and for different reasons we were not able to replace him directly.

“I took a decision – it’s late in the market, some players don’t want to come – to stick with the players we have. We have to work with them, we have to recover the confidence in Raul Jimenez, because he didn’t score in 10 months before that. Let’s try to get the best from Rodrigo.

“At the beginning of the season, we were not creating enough for the striker, so the noise was bigger. We kept confidence in Raul, and now it’s paying off.

“We all know Mitro – two balls into the box and he is able to score. I wanted to analyse and to see deeper, and recognised we were making their life more difficult. It’s difficult to replace a player like Mitro – imagine you don’t provide enough for them. After October, we started to provide much better. We gave the strikers more solutions.”

Attention will now turn to the summer transfer window, with Fulham again set to be in the headlines for sales rather than purchases. The Portuguese coach said of his lack of spending power: “You’re in a competition that’s tough on the pitch, but even tougher off the pitch.

“We have to be really proactive, we have to be creative. We have to believe in some players that didn’t have the best years, that they can be successful in your football club. We have to have the capacity as a staff to make them better.”

Two players Fulham have got the best out of, but could well lose in the coming months, are centre-back Adarabioyo and winger Willian. The former has been linked with a whole host of suitors, including Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle United and West Ham United.

The ex-City youngster is out of contract this summer, and after an impressive couple of years will be extremely difficult to tie down. The future of Willian, though, is much more in the balance, with Silva having reinvigorated a career that was fading following a poor stint at Arsenal and in his native Brazil with Corinthians.

Silva continued: “I would like [them to stay]. It should be a priority to try to keep them, and to improve from that core of players.

“There’s been a lot of noise around Tosin. Being honest, it’s really difficult to renew with him. Probably at the end of the season he’s going to leave the club. Not 100%, but probably it’s going to happen.

“For Willian, we are going to do the same as last season. We convinced him to come after a difficult time in Brazil – he helped the club, we helped him. We will analyse the season, go for dinner or whatever. He knows we would like to have him again – it’s going to be his decision as well. We will see what he decides after our conversation.”
