Villa drop points in dramatic draw, Luton snatch late winner to boost survival hopes

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa suffered a blow to their top-four hopes despite leading by two goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Brentford at Villa Park.

Thomas Frank left Ivan Toney on the bench, which gave Watkins the chance to impress as the pair compete for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Watkins got off to a fine start on his return from injury with a goal to put the hosts ahead when his close-range header narrowly crossed the line at the front post.

A minute into the second half, Morgan Rogers brilliantly doubled Villa’s lead when he latched onto Youri Tielemans’ through ball before lashing a strike into the bottom-right corner.

Mathias Jorgensen pulled a goal back for Brentford, scrappily turning in Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross, before the visitors completed the comeback two minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo’s volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Remarkably, Brentford took the lead shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa tapped Sergio Reguilon’s dangerous cross into an empty net.

However, Watkins grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left on the clock to save Unai Emery’s side from defeat and earn what could be an invaluable point.

The result leaves Villa just three points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in fifth place, and Spurs have two games in hand.

Hatters claim big win

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town came from behind to secure a huge three points in their bid for survival following a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road.

After a goalless opening period, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead five minutes into the second half with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards out.

Luton hit back through Jordan Clark, who made an excellent run through the midfield before laying the ball to Luke Berry, who was almost dispossessed, but Clark was in the right place at the right time to wrap his foot around the loose ball and fire past Neto.

As the game entered added time, substitute Cauley Woodrow floated an inviting ball into the box which Luton captain Carlton Morris turned in from close range.

Rob Edwards’ side remain in the bottom three, but are now six points clear of 19th place Burnley and level on points with Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Hammers win after late drama

West Ham United came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolves, despite some late VAR controversy.

Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead from the spot before Lucas Paqueta did the same for The Hammers as the game entered the latter stages.

James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead in memorable fashion, as his corner from the left swirled over everyone in the box and directly into the top-right corner.

Wolves thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Max Kilman’s header was dramatically ruled out for offside.

Newcastle claim narrow win

In west London, Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal gave Newcastle a 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage for their first away victory since February.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead through Fabian Schar who found the net from a tight angle, but the goal was ruled out due to Dan Burn’s foul on Calvin Bassey in the build-up.

But Fulham could not keep Newcastle out for much longer, as Guimaraes fired Newcastle ahead in the 81st minute.

Everton win relegation battle with Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat 10-man Burnley 1-0 for their first victory in 10 matches.

As Sean Dyche’s side held on for a much-needed three points, Dara O’Shea was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Dwight McNeil.

Fresh woe for Chelsea as Burnley snatch late equaliser

Cole Palmer’s brace proved in vein as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by ten-man Burnley in the Premier League.

The Blues were pegged back twice at Stamford Bridge where, despite Lorenz Assignon’s early red card, second-half goals from Josh Cullen and Dara O’Shea rescued a precious point for the relegation-threatened Clarets.

Having gone close through Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson – as well as seeing Axel Disasi denied by VAR – Chelsea broke through just before half-time.

Assignon was dismissed for a second yellow card after bundling over Mykhailo Mudryk in the box, before Palmer’s delightful Panenka from the penalty spot put the hosts in front.

Burnley responded within two minutes of the restart. Cullen played a neat one-two with substitute Josh Brownhill, and drilled a tremendous 20-yard volley past Djordje Petrovic.

Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead in the 78th minute, latching onto Raheem Sterling’s neat flick before slotting past Arijanet Muric.

However, the visitors hit back four minutes later as O’Shea headed in another equaliser.

Both sides went close to snatching all three points late on. Sterling nodded wide from close range, while Jay Rodriguez headed against the crossbar as the points were shared at the Bridge.

Tottenham up into fourth place with narrow win over struggling Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur leapfrogged arch-rivals Arsenal into the top four with a narrow 1-0 victory over a stubborn Burnley side who remain at risk of relegation in the Premier League.

Harry Kane converted from the spot on the stroke of half-time after Ashley Barnes was penalised for handball, a decision which proved decisive as Spurs took one step closer to Champions League football, while Burnley look nervously over their shoulders at the dreaded relegation zone with Leeds and Everton in action later in the day.

Spurs dominated the opening exchanges but were left frustrated by a resilient Burnley defence and inspired Nick Pope in the visiting goal. However, their resistance was broken right on half-time. VAR and referee Kevin Friend awarded Spurs a penalty with Barnes handling inside the box, putting the ball on a plate for Kane who made no mistake from 12 yards.

Burnley came out fighting in the second half and came within a lick of paint to an equaliser, with Barnes almost making amends with a long-range effort which struck the post. Spurs came closest to a second when Pope brilliantly denied Son from close-range, but the hosts held their nerve to secure a precious three points in their quest for the Champions League.

Spurs travel to already relegated Norwich City on the final day of the season next Sunday where victory will be the only thing on their minds. As for Burnley, they have a game in hand to play away at Aston Villa on Thursday evening, where they too will be desperate to win and boost their chances of survival.

TALKING POINT

Contentious VAR. This was the kind of game that was going to be decided on a moment of magic or a moment of controversy, it was the latter which prevailed. With just one replay, the consensus around the place was that referee Kevin Friend was going to point to the spot after looking for himself. The consensus was correct. Barnes’ arm did appear to be in an unnatural position, despite the vehement protests from the Burnley players and staff. When you concede a penalty to Spurs, there is typically only one outcome. Kane stepped up and could not have placed the ball anymore perfectly into the corner, leaving Pope rooted to the spot and Burnley reliant on Brentford and Brighton to do them a favour later today.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Nick Pope. If it wasn’t for Pope, Spurs could have been out of sight long before the penalty. He produced countless saves, some routine and some quite remarkable. Kane and Son, two of the most prolific finishers in the league, were left wondering how many more times they would have to bang their heads against the brick wall that was the Burnley goalkeeper. With performances like that, not only from Pope but from the team collectively, their chances of survival are still alive and kicking. However, defeat does leave them in a predicament and there is no shying away from that fact. The clock is ticking, the tension is rising, but the belief will remain unwavered based on the character shown by the Clarets today.
