Liverpool score three against Fulham to keep pace in title race

Liverpool kept pace in the Premier League title race with a 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s sumptuous free-kick on 32 minutes opened the scoring, but the Reds were pegged back on the stroke of half-time as Cottagers right-back Timothy Castagne slotted home after the visitors could not get an Alex Iwobi cutback clear.

With Jurgen Klopp turning to his bench, where his big hitters – Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez – sat, it was Ryan Gravenberch who put Liverpool back in the driving seat with a curling effort on 54 minutes to restore their advantage.

Diogo Jota broke free down the left channel with 18 minutes remaining, and his low drive squirmed through Bernd Leno to make it three and secure the victory that keeps Klopp’s side in the hunt for the title.

The Reds are now up to second in the table, off the top only on goal difference, with themselves and table-toppers Arsenal even on 74 points.

Talking point – Not at their best

Liverpool were not in top gear by any means, but they didn’t have to be in what proved a relatively straightforward afternoon for them.

Fulham posed some threat on the counter-attack, but their spurts of danger were few and far between as the visitors’ quality told.

What told further, was their strength in depth.

Klopp decided to drop his star names – Salah, Nunez, Szoboszlai, and Mac Allister – in favour of more rotational options, and two of them delivered, with Jota and Gravenberch, both of whom have been plagued with injuries this term, doing the business.

Player of the match – Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

A polished performance when the pressure was piling.

After two real setbacks in the last couple of weeks, Klopp needed a reaction and a cool head to step up to the plate.

His right-back was just the man to do so, striking a superb set piece into the top corner to send the Reds on their way.

Match highlights

32′: GOAL! FULHAM 0-1 LIVERPOOL (ALEXANDER-ARNOLD) Beautiful from Trent Alexander-Arnold! Liverpool are ahead, and it’s that man once more from a dead ball. He bends it beautifully into the top corner, beyond the helpless clasp of Bernd Leno!

34′: GOOD SAVE! Liverpool come again down that left side and Gakpo shifts it onto his right and rockets one towards the near post, which Leno is equal to.

45+3′: GOAL! FULHAM 1-1 LIVERPOOL (CASTAGNE) Fulham are level, and it’s Castagne! Robinson delivers into the middle for Muniz, and it comes for Iwobi on the far side. His cutback isn’t cleared, and Castagne steps onto it, and slots into the far corner on the sidefoot!

54′: GOAL! FULHAM 1-2 LIVERPOOL (GRAVENBERCH) Liverpool are back in front, and it’s Gravenberch with a stunner! They needed that urgently, and Iwobi’s pass from the edge of his own area is poorly into the path of Elliott. He wraps it into Gravenberch at pace, and the Dutchman gathers, before bending it beautifully inside the near post for his first Premier League goal.

73′: GOAL! FULHAM 1-3 LIVERPOOL (JOTA) It’s three, and Diogo Jota has his goal! Sent through down the left channel by Gakpo, the Portuguese drives into the box with Bassey in hot pursuit. He goes for the low drive, and it squirms through Leno on its way in.

Tottenham may face AC Milan battle for Fulham defender Adarabioyo – Paper Round

Competition grows for Adarabioyo

Tottenham, West Ham, AC Milan and perhaps even Liverpool could move for Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

The 26-year-old defender is out of contract in the summer and he is attracting interest from several clubs, reports the Mirror.

The paper writes: “Tottenham and West Ham are going head-to-head for Fulham central defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

“The 26-year-old centre-back is out of contract at Craven Cottage this summer and despite several rounds of talks over a possible extension, he looks poised to depart west London on a free transfer. Italian giants AC Milan are also in the hunt for his signature as they’ve been free to hold discussions with the player and his representatives since January – when Adarabioyo entered the final six months of his deal.

“Fulham tabled a fresh contract proposal to Adarabioyo in March that included a notable and significant pay-rise as Marco Silva is desperate to keep hold of the former Manchester City academy graduate. But even Fulham are now resigned to losing their defender as we approach the final stretch of the matches before the end of the campaign.

“Liverpool have also been credited with an interest but sources have briefed that it would be a major surprise if the 26-year-old ended up at Anfield.”

Blackburn target ex-England ‘keeper

Blackburn Rovers are hoping to sign John Ruddy on a free transfer this summer.

The 37-year-old, who boasts one England cap, could join up with his former Birmingham manager, John Eustace.

The Sun explains: “Blackburn boss John Eustace wants his old ‘keeper John Ruddy to join him on a free next season.

“The 37-year-old’s deal is up at Eustace’s former club Birmingham in the summer.

“The ex-England international joined The Blues in 2022, after leaving Wolves when his contract expired.”

Lazio star wants out

The Daily Star reports that Lazio midfielder Luis Alberto will try to have his contract torn up by his current club.

The former Liverpool player has been a Lazio stalwart since 2016, but has now grown tired of recent struggles.

The paper explains: “Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto has asked for his contract with Lazio to be terminated so he can find a new club.

“Alberto, who was signed by Brendan Rodgers in 2013, had a largely unsuccessful stint at Anfield. After costing the Reds £6 million from Sevilla, the Spaniard made only 12 first-team appearances over three years.

“Despite being a regular for the La Liga side, Liverpool decided to cut their losses in 2016, selling him to Lazio for £4.2m. However, Alberto managed to turn his career around in Serie A.

“Lazio, who are currently seventh in the Serie A table and far from Champions League qualification, have had a challenging season. The recent defeat to Roma in the Derby della Capitale was another low point, leading Alberto to reconsider his future.”

Sa attracts interest

Brighton and Brentford are just two sides who are keen on Porto teenager Gustavo Sa.

The 19-year-old midfielder is also a target for Everton and Leicester City, according to the Daily Mail.

“Brighton and Brentford are among the clubs tracking Portugal U20 attacking midfielder Gustavo Sa,” the paper claims.

“The 19-year old started out at Porto but is now starring for Famalicao, who are currently eighth in the Portuguese top flight.

“He made his breakthrough into the first team last season and has begun to establish himself as a first-team starter this campaign making 22 appearances and scoring two goals.

“He was part of Portugal’s U19 squad that was runner-up in the European Championships last year and has been capped four times at U20 level.

“His potential has caught the eye of a number of clubs this season with Everton and Championship title contenders Leicester City also posting an interest.”

Villa drop points in dramatic draw, Luton snatch late winner to boost survival hopes

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa suffered a blow to their top-four hopes despite leading by two goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Brentford at Villa Park.

Thomas Frank left Ivan Toney on the bench, which gave Watkins the chance to impress as the pair compete for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Watkins got off to a fine start on his return from injury with a goal to put the hosts ahead when his close-range header narrowly crossed the line at the front post.

A minute into the second half, Morgan Rogers brilliantly doubled Villa’s lead when he latched onto Youri Tielemans’ through ball before lashing a strike into the bottom-right corner.

Mathias Jorgensen pulled a goal back for Brentford, scrappily turning in Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross, before the visitors completed the comeback two minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo’s volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Remarkably, Brentford took the lead shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa tapped Sergio Reguilon’s dangerous cross into an empty net.

However, Watkins grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left on the clock to save Unai Emery’s side from defeat and earn what could be an invaluable point.

The result leaves Villa just three points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in fifth place, and Spurs have two games in hand.

Hatters claim big win

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town came from behind to secure a huge three points in their bid for survival following a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road.

After a goalless opening period, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead five minutes into the second half with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards out.

Luton hit back through Jordan Clark, who made an excellent run through the midfield before laying the ball to Luke Berry, who was almost dispossessed, but Clark was in the right place at the right time to wrap his foot around the loose ball and fire past Neto.

As the game entered added time, substitute Cauley Woodrow floated an inviting ball into the box which Luton captain Carlton Morris turned in from close range.

Rob Edwards’ side remain in the bottom three, but are now six points clear of 19th place Burnley and level on points with Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Hammers win after late drama

West Ham United came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolves, despite some late VAR controversy.

Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead from the spot before Lucas Paqueta did the same for The Hammers as the game entered the latter stages.

James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead in memorable fashion, as his corner from the left swirled over everyone in the box and directly into the top-right corner.

Wolves thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Max Kilman’s header was dramatically ruled out for offside.

Newcastle claim narrow win

In west London, Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal gave Newcastle a 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage for their first away victory since February.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead through Fabian Schar who found the net from a tight angle, but the goal was ruled out due to Dan Burn’s foul on Calvin Bassey in the build-up.

But Fulham could not keep Newcastle out for much longer, as Guimaraes fired Newcastle ahead in the 81st minute.

Everton win relegation battle with Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat 10-man Burnley 1-0 for their first victory in 10 matches.

As Sean Dyche’s side held on for a much-needed three points, Dara O’Shea was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Dwight McNeil.
