Van der Poel ‘clear favourite’ but ‘never count us out,’ says Jorgenson

Matteo Jorgenson believes that Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat at the Tour of Flanders, but says he and his Visma-Lease a Bike team can never be ruled out of contention.

Van Aert’s injury means the focus for Visma will be on the US rider heading into Flanders on Sunday, but Jorgenson admits that the team have yet to reconfigure their plans following the Belgian’s absence.

“If you saw the amount of man-hours that they put into making the original plan, I think you would understand that they still haven’t finished the new plan with the riders that we have now,” said Jorgenson at the pre-race press conference.

He continued: “I still don’t even know the final plan but I think we basically will have to play off of Alpecin because I think they have full pressure on them to take the race into their hands and we’ll just have to look for our moment.

“I think there’s one clear favourite and that’s Mathieu van der Poel. [But] I think I’m still in what I consider the best [team] in the world so you can never really count us out.”

The 24-year-old explained in more detail what sets Van der Poel apart from the rest, but appeared confident as he bids to add Sunday’s Monument to his victories at Paris-Nice and at Dwars door Vlaanderen.

“I think as a rider Van der Poel is definitely a notch above just in theoretical terms, but it is a bike race and like we’ve seen in the past races, a lot of things can happen so I think we still have a good chance and I have a lot of confidence,” he added.

“I have to remain realistic and I’ll have to do my best on Sunday. I don’t think anything magical is going to happen but I think my legs this year are something completely new and I’m still finding my limits I think.

“Actually, I haven’t really found where I blew up yet so my feeling after Wednesday is a new level of confidence in these races.”

‘It’s motivated me’ – Wilson channelling worlds pain as part of preparation for Paris 2024

Emma Wilson’s Olympic dreams hit an inflection point at the World Championships.

The windsurfer, who won bronze in Tokyo three years ago, romped to 15 wins out of 20 races in the iQFOiL class at the Worlds in Lanzarote to achieve an almost unprecedented level of success.

Unfortunately for Wilson, the format of the class means that even with a mammoth lead through the first part of the competition, the make-up of the podium is decided by a single medal race at the end.

For the second Worlds running, Wilson went into that medal race as the top seed, but again missed out on gold.

After bronze in The Hague in 2023, she upgraded to silver this time around, but it was still a bitter pill to swallow after proving herself to be the class of the fleet throughout the competition.

It has become something of a familiar scenario for the Christchurch windsurfer, but while she readily admits that it was tough to take, Wilson believes she has responded in the right way.

She said: “After the Worlds, it was really hard. It was so hard to take and come second and not win after the week I’d had.

“We had a week off and I’ve just been training since. It’s motivated me. It could have gone one way or the other and I’m just really motivated.

“This Worlds was definitely the hardest one. I was done with it, I was so angry. I was just upset, it’s hard because you put everything into it.

“Sponsors help me and you want to give back, you want to try and win something. For the week after, I was upset and sad and every emotion.

“But then, I have a really good coach, Sam [Ross], and we sat down and made a good plan. For me, the goal has always been to try to win Olympic gold so I guess I’ve got one more chance.”

Next up for Wilson is the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in Palma, an event which she won a year ago.

It is the last major competition for Wilson before the Olympics, and with all her training now focused around nailing that medal race, she is keen to get back out there.

She said: “Last year, I won this, which was pretty cool. This year is a bit different because I’m selected, so I just want to learn as much as I can before the Olympics.

“It’s not a peak event, whereas last year it was part of our selection. I like to try and do as well as I can at every event.

“I’m looking forward to racing because that is the best bit.

“With my personality, I am constantly debriefing. Every evening I’m thinking about what happened and why it happened. Maybe there is a thing of not trying too hard during the week. But if you qualify first, it makes your life so much easier.

“There is a balance. It’s part of the game, you have to do well all week but the real race is at the end. Getting your head around that. All my training is focused around that and all I can do is keep trying and hopefully it goes my way at some point.”

Wilson has shown that over the long haul, there is no one who can match her speed. This week in Palma will give her one last chance to prove she can nail that medal race as well.

Raphinha fires Barca to win over Las Palmas to cut gap on Real

Raphinha headed home a second-half winner as Barcelona overcame the 10 men of Las Palmas to draw back to five points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

With El Clasico still to come, Madrid cannot afford to slip up when they face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.

Barcelona dominated the game and had 69% possession against Las Palmas but struggled to find a breakthrough until Raphinha’s 59th-minute winner, assisted by substitute Joao Felix.

Barcelona were aided by a red card for Las Palmas goalkeeper Alvaro Valles who was sent off following a foul outside the box on a surging Raphinha.

The hosts hit the bar through Robert Lewandowski before the introduction of Joao Felix gave them extra impetus.

The Portuguese star provided a chipped assist for Raphinha’s headed goal before hitting the bar himself.

Talking Point – La Liga title race not over as Barcelona hope for Real Madrid mistake before El Clasico

Barcelona have an unbeaten run dating back to January and the title race could take another turn if Madrid crumble under the pressure.

With El Clasico to come next month a couple of dropped points for Real would make La Liga very interesting.

Despite Xavi being banned from the dugout against Las Palmas the second half introduction of Joao Felix was enough to unlock a stubborn Las Palmas defence and the talented forward could yet have a say in the title race.

Player of the Match – Ilkay Gundogan (Barcelona)

The creative midfielder seemed to be working on a different wavelength as some of his Barcelona team-mates.

Gundogan provided the skill needed to unlock the Las Palmas defence and it was only for poor finishing or off-side runs which prevented further goals.

Player Ratings:

Barcelona: Ter Stegen 7, Kounde 7, Cubarsi 7, Martinez 7, Cancelo 7, Roberto 7, Gundogan 8, Lopez 7, Yamal 7, Lewandowski 8, Raphinha 8

Subs Joao Felix 8, Romeu 7, Torres 7, Roque 7

Las Palmas: Valles 5, Alex Suarez 6, Coco 6, Marmol 6, Cardona 6, Marvin 7, Javier Monoz 6, Loiodice 6, Rodriguez 6, Haddadi 6, Ramirez 6

Subs: Campana 6, Cardona 6, Escandell 7, Moleiro 7, Ramirez 6

Lewandowski runs onto a through ball before playing in Raphinha who scores. Raphinha was in an off-side position when the ball was initially played to Lewandowski but not when the pass came to him. Barcelona are not happy but the goal will not stand.

25 – Alvaro Valles shown red

Raphinha beats the off-side trap and races through only for goalkeeper Valles to come flying out and taking down the Barcelona forward.

35 – Off the bar

Cancelo whips a ball in for Lewandowski who connects with the ball off his shoulder and it clips the crossbar.

45+3 – Coco goes close

A rare Las Palmas break results in a free-kick which Coco strikes well and has the goalkeeper worried. However, his effort is inches wide of the post.

60 – Goal! Barcelona 1 Las Palmas 0 (Raphina)

Joao Felix is provider with a surging run followed by an excellent chipped ball right onto the head of Raphinha who heads past the goalkeeper.

79 – Off the bar

Joao Felix somehow finds the crossbar from a simple finish as Kounde crosses for Gundogan who puts it on a plate for the substitute. However, the forward sends his effort off the crossbar.

87 – Moleiro goes close

Moleiro gives Barcelona a fright cutting inside his marker then sending a vicious effort into the side-netting.
