Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez reveals true feelings about defender Jules Kounde

FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has revealed the status of his relationship with defender Jules Kounde, amidst speculation of a rift between the two.

The Spanish media had reported that Kounde was unhappy with his lack of playing time and was considering his future at the club. However, Xavi has moved to allay those fears, saying that he had a conversation with Kounde a week ago and that there were no problems.

“Koundé, no problem. Nothing has happened,” Xavi told Sport. “It was all done by the media. I had a conversation with him a week ago and there were no problems.”

Hernandez went on to say that Jules Kounde is a “great player” and that he is happy to have him in Barcelona. He also said that he understands that Kounde would prefer to play at centre-back, but that he is willing to play at right-back if needed.

“It’s true that he feels more comfortable playing as a CB than as a full-back, but everything is fine,” Xavi said. “He is a great player and I am happy to have him at the club.”

Xavi Hernandez’s comments will come as a relief to Barcelona fans, who were concerned about the reports of a rift with Kounde. The 23-year-old French defender is one of the most promising young defenders in the world and he is seen as a key part of Barcelona’s future.

“Ich werde mit ihm sprechen”, sagte Barças Trainer Xavi in einem am Montag veröffentlichten Interview der Zeitung “Sport”. Der 43-Jährige zeigte sich davon überzeugt, dass Messi dem frisch gebackenen spanischen Meister sportlich weiterhelfen würde: “Es gibt überhaupt keinen Zweifel. Wenn Messi zurückkäme, würde das unserem Fußball sehr helfen”, erklärte Xavi und verriet, dass er seinen Standpunkt auch Barcelonas Präsidenten Joan Laporta bereits dargelegt habe.

Eine Rückkehr von Messi würde Xavi zufolge nicht zu einer Änderung der Spieltaktik führen. “Nein, es wäre dieselbe Idee, dasselbe Modell”, betonte der Spanier und verwies auf die Vielseitigkeit des Weltmeisters: “Messi könnte bei Barça an vielen verschiedenen Positionen spielen.” Xavi denkt zudem, dass Messi “noch Jahre auf hohem Niveau vor sich” habe, betonte aber auch, dass die Entscheidung, ob der 35-Jährige zu den Blaugrana zurückkehrt, alleine bei Messi liegt.

Auch Saudi-Arabien ist im Gespräch

Vor zwei Jahren hatte Messi den FC Barcelona nach 21 Jahren unter Tränen verlassen, nachdem klargeworden war, dass sich die hoch verschuldeten Katalanen ihn nicht mehr leisten konnten. “La Pulga” schloss sich Paris St. Germain an, konnte dort aber nie die in ihn gesetzten Erwartungen erfüllen. Bei PSG läuft sein Vertrag nun aus, in Frankreich wird er mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht bleiben.

Neben Barcelona wird Messi auch mit einem Engagement in Saudi-Arabien in Verbindung gebracht, was finanziell für ihn auf jeden Fall lukrativer wäre. Sollte es also nicht zu einer Rückkehr des siebenmaligen Weltfußballers kommen, dann sieht Xavi darin auch keine Gefahr. Barcelona habe nämlich in der abgelaufenen Saison mit der gewonnenen Meisterschaft gezeigt, über welche Qualität man verfügt. “Dieser Titel hat besondere Bedeutung, weil wir ihn ohne den besten Fußballer dieses Klubs und der Welt gewonnen haben.”

Barcelona set to spend big for Guimaraes

Fresh from helping Newcastle United secure Champions League football, Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaeraes is a big-money target for Barcelona.

The Sun reports that the Spanish champions hope to bring in the Brazilian to reinforce their squad, which could help Newcastle balance their books.

“BARCELONA want to sign Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes this summer,” the paper begins.

“The Catalan giants believe that the Brazilian ace can help catapult them back into Champions League contention.

“Selling Guimaraes would help Newcastle further strengthen their squad within the parameters of Financial Fair Play.

“And they would expect to command a club-record fee for a sale should they let him depart.

“Barca accept that Guimaraes is likely to cost around £87million to prise away from the Toon.”

Maguire set for Serie A move

After Chris Smalling, Harry Maguire could become the latest English Manchester United defender to find a new home in Serie A.

The Mirror believes that four clubs – Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma – are all interested in taking the player on loan.

“Out-of-favour Manchester United defender Harry Maguire wants more starts next season after being linked with a loan move to either one of four Italian giants.” the report claims.

“Juventus, AC Milan, Inter and Roma have all been tipped to make a move for Maguire, who’s ended up as fifth-choice centre-back under manager Erik ten Hag. The England international, 30, was handed a rare start by Ten Hag for Sunday’s 2-1 win at home to Fulham which confirmed a third-place finish for United, as the Premier League campaign drew to a close.”

Ten Hag wants more money

Erik ten Hag noted that other teams in the league spent big this season, and that had cost him the signature of Cody Gakpo, and that Newcastle had also outspent him in the winter, as did Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Telegraph reports that Ten Hag hopes for more investment this summer, which should help him secure Harry Kane.

The paper writes: “United refused to sanction a £44 million deal for Cody Gakpo, one of Ten Hag’s leading forward targets, with the manager instead having to settle for underwhelming loan deals for striker Wout Weghorst, who did not score a league goal, midfielder Marcel Sabitzer and goalkeeper Jack Butland. By contrast, Newcastle paid Everton £40 million for Anthony Gordon, Arsenal spent over £50 million on Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho and Chelsea invested over £250 million.

“Ten Hag wants to add Harry Kane, the £100 million Tottenham striker, among others, but there is not thought to be a great deal of optimism within the corridors of power that a deal can be done for the England captain at this stage.”

Barcelona have not ruled out a summer transfer move for Girona midfielder Oriel Romeu. The 31-year-old returned to his homeland from Southampton last summer.

According to the report from Gerard Moreno, the Catalans will be keen on adding Romeu to their plans next season. Barcelona manager Xavi has insisted that he wants his team to compete across all fronts.

“Oriol Romeu was offered to FC Barcelona,” said Moreno. “He knows Barça very well and has cheap service. FC Barcelona does not rule out his arrival.”

The 31-year-old Romeu was one of the most experienced players during his time at Southampton. At the English club, he made 256 appearances across seven seasons. This season, he has made 34 appearances for Girona.

The Catalans won the La Liga for the first time since 2019. However, they lost to Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final. Moreover, they were knocked out of the Champions League group stages and then lost to Manchester United in the Europa League Round of 32.

Xavi has said that he wants Barcelona to have a better spine if they want to compete across all fronts. The newly-crowned La Liga winners have already confirmed the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, respectively. During the season, they also bid farewell to the career of Gerard Pique.

If Romeu comes to Camp Nou, he can definitely work as a short-term replacement for outgoing Busquets. Moreover, he can become an experienced pro in the dressing room with the two veterans leaving the club in the summer.

Eigentlich lief der Vertrag von Andres Iniesta noch bis Januar 2024, doch bei Vissel Kobe spielt der WM-Siegtorschütze von 2010 so gut wie keine Rolle mehr. Der Spanier war an den ersten 14 Spieltagen bei drei Einwechslungen nur zu insgesamt 38 Minuten Spielzeit gekommen, deswegen gab er unter Tränen seinen Abschied bekannt.

“Zuerst möchte ich meine Zeit hier zu Ende spielen und dann sehen, welche Möglichkeiten sich mir bieten”, sagte der Weltmeister von 2010: “Ich will noch spielen. Das ist hier schwierig für mich, deshalb möchte ich einen anderen Ort finden, an dem ich mich zur Ruhe setzen kann.” Der Abschied von Kobe sei “eine der schwersten Entscheidungen meiner Karriere”, führte der Mittelfeldspieler aus, “aber die Dinge haben sich nicht so entwickelt, wie ich es wollte”.

Iniesta war im Jahr 2018 nach mehr als 600 Spielen für den FC Barcelona nach Kobe gewechselt, wo er in der Anfangszeit ein Jahresgehalt von bis zu 30 Millionen Euro verdiente. Highlight auf seiner Abschiedstournee wird am 6. Juni ein Freundschaftsspiel gegen Barcelona in Tokio, seinen letzten Auftritt für Vissel hat er am 1. Juli im J-League-Spiel gegen Consadole Sapporo.

Mit Jordi Alba (34) verlässt nach Sergio Busquets das nächste Urgestein des FC Barcelona den Klub im Sommer. Albas Vertrag wird aufgelöst.

Zehn Jahre und zehn Monate. So lange verbrachte der offensivdenkende Linksverteidiger Jordi Alba als Profi bei “seinem” FC Barcelona. Mehr als ein paar Wochen werden nun aber nicht hinzukommen.

Wie der neue spanische Meister am Mittwoch bekanntgab, wird der 34-Jährige, trotz Vertrages bis 2024, im Sommer seine Taschen beim FCB packen: Sein Kontrakt wird aufgelöst. In dieser Saison brachte es Dauerbrenner Alba nur noch auf 23 Einsätze in La Liga (zwei Tore) sowie zwei in der Champions League und einen in der Europa League.

Nur noch zweite Geige hinter Teenager Balde

Dass der ehemalige kongeniale Partner von Lionel Messi (35, aktuell bei PSG) nur deutlich seltener zum Zug kam, lag an seinem erst 19 Jahre alten Konkurrenten Balde. Dieser hat Alba, der in den vergangenen Jahren mitunter schwächelte – gerade defensiv -, den Rang abgelaufen – und überzeugt häufig mit starken Auftritten.

Ein Jubiläum ist noch möglich

Insgesamt absolvierte Alba im Trikot der Blaugrana seit Sommer 2012 fast 400 Pflichtspiele, 398 um genau zu sein (21 Treffer). Sollte er in den verbleibenden beiden Ligaspielen eingesetzt werden, wird er sich mit exakt 400 Partien für seinen FCB verabschieden.

Alba wird dies erhobenen Hauptes tun, immerhin sicherte er sich jüngst seine sechste Meisterschaft mit Barça, außerdem wurde er mit seinem Herzensverein fünfmal spanischer Pokalsieger und 2015 gewann er mit dem FCB die Champions League, ja gar das Triple.

Dies alles erreichte er gemeinsam mit Sergio Busquets (34). Selbst die EM sicherten sich die spanischen Granden 2012 gemeinsam. Nun verlassen sie beide den FC Barcelona. Auch Alba schnürte bereits in der Jugend die Fußballschuhe für den FCB, von 1998 bis 2005.

Albas Weg zurück zum FCB war kein einfacher

Im Gegensatz zu Busquets musste er jedoch den Umweg über Valencia nach Barcelona gehen. Dies gelang unter anderem, weil Alba bei seinem Ex-Klub vom Mittelfeldspieler zum Verteidiger umfunktioniert worden war und fortan brillierte.

Nun also verlässt nach Sergio Busquets ein weiteres Urgestein Barça nach dem Meistertitel. Als Interessenten am bereits 34 Jahre alten Linksverteidiger gelten unter anderem Atletico Madrid und Juventus Turin.

Jordi Alba will leave Barcelona at the end of the 2022-23 season it has been confirmed on Wednesday.

The player and the club have mutually decided to terminate the defenders’ stay a year early, with Alba under contract until the end of the 2023-23 campaign.

His exit is similar to that of midfielder Sergio Busquets, who also left the club early due to help the club in their ongoing financial situation.

The club released a statement on Wednesday to confirm the decision.

“FC Barcelona and Jordi Alba have reached an agreement to terminate the player’s contract with the club one year earlier than it was due to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.

“FC Barcelona would like to publicly express its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment and dedication, and his ever-positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barca family, and wishes him every fortune in the future. Barca will always be a home for you, Jordi.”

The Spanish international won 19 major honours at Barcelona across 458 appearances to date.

Alba, 34, was a product of the club’s world-famous La Masia academy but left the Blaugrana youth set-up to play youth football at Unio Esportiva Cornella – a smaller local club.

From there he was picked up by Valencia and became an ever-present figure at left-back, and even scored in Spain’s 4-0 Euro 2012 final triumph against Italy.

After an impressive decade away from Barcelona, he rejoined the club in 2012 for a fee of around £12 million and never looked back.

He scored 19 goals and registered 91 assists for the Camp Nou club, became a six-time La Liga champion – including this season – and won the 2014-15 Champions League in his time.

Alba was reportedly offered a new deal by Barcelona, but signing it would have meant taking a 70 per cent pay cut.

Im Vergleich zur 1:2-Heimniederlage gegen Real Sociedad San Sebastian rotierte Barça-Coach Xavi gleich auf fünf Positionen: Statt Koundé (nicht im Kader), Jordi Alba, Busquets, Kessié und Dembelé (alle Bank) begannen Sergi Roberto, Marcos Alonso, Garcia, Pablo Torre sowie Gavi.

Gleich mit dem ersten Angriff ging der Außenseiter in Führung – mit gütiger Mithilfe der Katalanen: Denn Christensen beförderte den Ball nach einer Flanke recht ungeschickt per Kopf ins eigene Tor (2.). Barça übernahm fortan die Initiative und kam auch zu einem Plus an guten Torchancen, die erste hatte Raphinha, der jedoch in Valladolid-Keeper Masip seinen Meister fand (14.).

Überhaupt Masip: Denn immer wieder verhinderte der Torhüter in der Folge einen Treffer für Barcelona. So auch erneut gegen Raphinha (30.) und dann gegen bei einem Christensen-Kopfball war der Spanier auf dem Posten (31.). Lewandowski wiederum zielt hauchdünn am Tor vorbei (32.).

Ter Stegen zur Pause raus

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt stand es indes schon 2:0 für das Kellerkind, nachdem Larin in der 22. Minute einen von Garcia verursachten Foulelfmeter souverän verwandelt hatte.

Nach der Pause erhielt Inaki Pena statt ter Stegen eine Bewährungschance im Barça-Tor (46.). Die Katalanen hatten weiter ein klares Übergewicht, entwickelten aber kaum Durchschlagskraft. Stattdessen gelang auf der Gegenseite beinahe Plato und Larin Verbund das 3:0. Nach Flanke von Ersterem verpasste der Kanadier aber knapp, der Ball prallte schließlich vom Außenpfosten zur Seite weg (60.).

Plata-Tor zählt nach VAR-Entscheid

Doch die Vorentscheidung sollte dennoch alsbald fallen. Nach einem Konter behielt Larin die Übersicht und bediente Plata, der trocken zum 3:0 vollstreckte (73.). Der Treffer zählte nach vermeintlichem Abseits erst nach VAR-Entscheid. Danach zeigte die Barça bei weiteren Großchancen – Lucas Rosa traf für Valladolid erneut den Pfosten – beinahe schon Auflösungserscheinungen.

Immerhin aus Sicht der Xavi-Elf: Lewandowski gelang nach Steilpass von de Jong in der 84. Minute noch der Ehrentreffer. Für Valladolid, das Getafe von Platz 17 verdrängte, war der prestigeträchtige Erfolg ein echter Befreiungsschlag im Abstiegskampf.

Barça trifft am 37. Spieltag (Sonntag, 19 Uhr) zu Hause auf den RCD Mallorca. Parallel dazu spielt Valladolid im Abstiegskampf bei UD Almeria.

Real Valladolid came into the match desperately needing points for their survival fund and they made the perfect start by scoring after just two minutes. Darwin Machis whipped in an inviting cross and Andreas Christensen could only divert his header past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and into his own goal.

Paulo Pezzolano’s side doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when Cyle Larin stepped up to dispatch his penalty after Gonzalo Plata was brought down by Eric Garcia.

As expected, Xavi’s side started to push forward with more purpose and intensity and Jordi Masip had to pull off a couple of fine saves to deny Raphinha and Christensen.

Valladolid came within inches of going 3-0 up on the hour mark but were denied by the woodwork. Gonzalo Plata fired in a terrific cross looking for Larin who was unable to make clean contact and the ball struck the post.

Real Valladolid made it 3-0 15 minutes from time courtesy of a superb counter-attack. Larin timed his run to perfection to burst through before firing the ball across to Plata who was on hand to stroke home.

The hosts were denied by the woodwork for a second time with 10 minutes to go when Lucas Rosa’s clipped effort struck the post.

Robert Lewandowski scored what would prove to be a mere consolation for Barcelona five minutes from time when he rounded Masip and found the back of the net with a fine finish.
