Hudson-Odoi weckt seinen Ex-Klub auf: Chelsea hält Kurs auf Europa

Mit dem dritten Sieg in Folge hält der FC Chelsea den Traum von Europa am Leben, dabei sah es kurz vor Schluss nach einer Niederlage in Nottingham aus. Callum Hudson-Odois Führungstreffer rüttelte die fahrigen Blues wach, die das Spiel binnen zwei Minuten drehten.

Die Ausgangslage war klar: Durch das Remis von Newcastle United am Nachmittag hatte der FC Chelsea die Chance, durch einen Sieg in Nottingham mit den Magpies gleichzuziehen. Beim 5:0 gegen West Ham hatten die Blues Selbstvertrauen für den Saisonendspurt getankt und traten personell unverändert bei den Reds an, die aber die erste Chance hatten. Wood scheiterte jedoch an Petrovic im Chelsea-Tor (2.).

Palmer setzt Mudryk in Szene – Boly hat die Antwort

Der erste Jubel war somit den Gästen vorbehalten: Palmer spielte einen genialen Pass in die Schnittstelle, Mudryk bedankte sich und traf aus spitzem Winkel zur Führung (8.) – die allerdings nicht lange hielt.

Premier League, 37. Spieltag

Nach einem taktischen Foul Badiashiles setzte Gibbs-White mit seinem Freistoß Boly ein, der Jackson enteilte und zum schnellen Ausgleich einköpfte (16.). So schwungvoll der erste Durchgang allerdings begonnen hatte, so zäh ging er zu Ende – mit einem 1:1-Pausenstand.

Forest scheitert dreimal an der Latte

Nach Wiederanpfiff war dann aber Feuer im Spiel, vor allem dank der Gastgeber, die mit einem Punktgewinn schließlich den Klassenerhalt endgültig besiegeln wollten. Es fehlte aber, man kennt es im Tabellenkeller, zunächst am nötigen Spielglück.

Yates (53.), Gibbs-White (57.) und Hudson-Odoi (71.) hatten allesamt gute Chancen, allen drei stand jedoch der Pfosten im Weg.

Hudson-Odoi weckt die Blues

Es schien jedoch nur eine Frage der Zeit, ehe den schläfrigen Blues das passive Spiel – lediglich Thiago Silva meldete die Gäste offensiv an (63.) – um die Ohren fliegen würde.

Und so war es Ex-Blue Hudson-Odoi, der bei einem weiteren starken Angriff den Bann brach (74.), damit aber augenscheinlich die Blues weckte. Denn plötzlich war der FC Chelsea da – und drehte die Partie binnen zwei Minuten zurück. Erst zirkelte Sterling den Ball ins Netz (80.), dann köpfte Jackson frei ein (82.).

Chelsea bleibt dadurch im Rennen um Platz an Newcastle United dran, doch auch für Forest ist die Niederlage wohl nicht weiter tragisch. Bei einer um zwölf Tore besseren Tordifferenz im Vergleich zum ersten Abstiegsplatz und Luton Town müsste am letzten Spieltag schon viel schiefgehen. Zumal Nottingham beim bereits abgestiegenen FC Burnley (19. 5., 17 Uhr)gastiert. Chelsea spielt parallel gegen Bournemouth.

Burnley und Luton hoffen nur kurz – Premier-League-Absteiger stehen so gut wie fest

Die Hoffnung flammte am Samstagnachmittag zwar noch einmal kurz auf, doch am Ende steht fest: Nach Sheffield United müssen auch die beiden anderen Aufsteiger Burnley (1:2 bei Tottenham) und Luton Town (1:3 bei West Ham United) die Premier League nach nur einem Jahr wieder verlassen.

Burnley wusste am Samstagnachmittag, was die Stunde geschlagen: Nur ein Sieg bei den Spurs würde den vorzeitigen Abstieg des Zweitliga-Meisters der Vorsaison zumindest vorerst abwenden. Und tatsächlich schien das Team von Vincent Kompany nach dem Strohhalm zu Greifen, als der frühere Bundesliga-Profi Bruun Larsen (BVB, Hoffenheim) die Gäste in London in Führung schoss (25.). Nur sieben Minuten später bekamen Burnleys Hoffnungen allerdings wieder einen Dämpfer versetzt: Pedro Porro marschierte die rechte Seite herunter, wurde überhaupt nicht angegriffen und drosch den Ball zum 1:1 oben rechts ins Tor (32.).

In der zweiten Hälfte erhöhten die Spurs, die zuletzt vier Niederlagen in Folge kassiert hatten, stetig den Druck. Für den umjubelten Siegtreffer sorgte in der Schlussphase der frühere Wolfsburger Van de Ven, der plötzlich in vorderster Front am gegnerischen Sechzehner auftauchte und gekonnt mit links vollendete (83.). Während Tottenham durch den Sieg seine vagen Champions-League-Hoffnungen am Leben hält (zwei Spiele vor Schluss vier Punkte Rückstand auf das viertplatzierte Aston Villa), steht Burnley schon vor dem letzten Spieltag als Absteiger fest.

Luton ärgert West Ham bei Moyes’ letztem Heimspiel nicht lang genug

Gleiches gilt mehr oder weniger auch schon für Luton Town. Genau wie Burnley durfte Luton bei West Ham United zunächst hoffen: Lokonga köpfte zur frühen Führung ein (6.). Das letzte Heimspiel ihres scheidenden Trainers David Moyes wollten die Hammers aber offenbar nicht verlieren: Ward-Prowse (54.) und Soucek (65.) drehten den Spieß binnen weniger Minuten um. Der eingewechselte Earthy (19) machte mit seinem ersten Premier-League-Tor den Deckel drauf (76.).

Damit hat auch Luton allenfalls noch theoretische Chancen auf den Klassenerhalt. Der Rückstand auf den Tabellen-17. Nottingham Forest beträgt zwar nur drei Punkte, Lutons Tordifferenz ist jedoch um 13 schlechter. Sollte Forest am Samstagabend gegen Chelsea punkten, wäre der Abstieg auch theoretisch besiegelt.

Erstmals als 100 Gegentore in einer Saison

Für einen neuen Negativwert sorgte indes Sheffield United, das längst als Absteiger festgestanden hatte: Beim FC Everton setzte es eine 0:1-Niederlage, durch die United als erstes Team der Premier-League-Geschichte nun in einer Saison mehr als 100 Gegentreffer kassiert hat (101). 1993/94 hatte Swindon Town 100 Tore kassiert – allerdings in einer Saison mit 42 Spielen.

Jackson strikes late as Chelsea recover to edge past Forest

Chelsea stayed in the hunt for European football with a late second-half comeback to beat Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Nicolas Jackson headed in the 82nd-minute winner from a cross by substitute Reece James, just two minutes after Raheem Sterling had curled in the equaliser.

The visitors had taken the lead after just eight minutes, when Mykhailo Mudryk drilled in a low shot after a superb pass from Cole Palmer.

Willy Boly headed in a free kick to equalise just eight minutes later. In a frenetic second half, a nicely taken goal by Callum Hudson-Odoi looked like it might give Forest the win, until Chelsea’s two quick late strikes changed everything.

Results early in the day had all but secured Forest’s place in the Premier League next season, with Burnley and Luton both losing their games.

Forest’s goal difference is superior to Luton’s by 13, meaning a huge and unlikely swing is required on the final day to send them down.

TALKING POINT

Can Chelsea secure European football next season? That’s three wins in a row now for Chelsea, who have been one of the form teams in the final third of the season. One reason for their freshness might lie in the absence of what they’re currently chasing.

After all the investment of the last few years, back-to-back seasons without European football would seem unthinkable at Stamford Bridge. Until their recent late charge it was looking like a reality, but Mauricio Pochettino’s team are bang in form and now level on points with Newcastle, who stay ahead of them on goal difference.

What positions secure European football and in which competitions still needs to be decided, but Chelsea have elbowed their way into the argument with two games to go. It’s Brighton first on Wednesday, and then Bournemouth at home to finish; two massive games for the future of this young team.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Whether from behind the front three or from wide on the left, Palmer was a constant menace to Forest and set up a superb opening goal for Mudryk. He looks certain to be voted the Young Player of the Year, and be integral to Chelsea long term. Given the form he’s in, he may well force his way into Gareth Southgate’s first team in Germany this summer.

Weil Josko Gvardiol erneut als Torjäger auftrumpfte, hat Manchester City die Pflichtaufgabe bei Fulham mit einem lockeren 4:0-Sieg gelöst und nähert sich der Titelverteidigung. Nur kurz vor Schluss gibt es Diskussionen.

Manchester City braucht nur noch zwei Siege, um als erster Premier-League-Klub zum vierten Mal in Serie Meister zu werden. Das drittletzte “Finale” (O-Ton Pep Guardiola) gewannen die Citizens am Samstagmittag beim FC Fulham souverän mit 3:0 – auch ohne Haaland-Tor.

Nach mutigen ersten Minuten der Gastgeber brachte der Ex-Leipziger Gvardiol ManCity bereits in der 13. Minute in Führung. Der teuerste Abwehrspieler der Welt, der in den vergangenen Wochen nicht zufällig zum Torjäger mutiert ist, traf nach Doppelpass mit De Bruyne in Torjäger-Manier mit dem schwächeren rechten Fuß. Für den Vorlagengeber war es der 111. Premier-League-Assists, was nur noch Ryan Giggs toppt (162).

Guardiola musste früh Walker für den angeschlagenen Aké bringen, ansonsten aber lief alles nach Plan für seine Elf, die Fulhams Offensive mühelos kontrollierte und mit dem typischen Pass- und Positionsspiel auf das 2:0 drängte. Die beste Chance dazu vergab Akanji freistehend nach einer kurz ausgeführten Ecke (44.).

Doch weil ManCity auch nach dem Seitenwechsel nicht nachließ, fiel die Entscheidung schon bald. Foden traf nach einem Solo von Bernardo Silva präzise unten links zum 2:0 (59.), Gvardiol lenkte den Ball nach einer Halbfeld-Flanke des Portugiesen infolge einer Ecke wieder mit rechts zum 3:0 ins Netz – sein fünftes Tor in den letzten sieben Pflichtspielen, nachdem er zuvor gar nicht für ManCity getroffen hatte (71.).

Haaland glücklos und ausgewechselt – Gvardiol darf Elfmeter nicht schießen

Haaland, der beim 5:1 gegen Wolverhampton zuletzt noch viermal zugeschlagen hatte, blieb dagegen torlos – er verschenkte seinen 26. Treffer förmlich, als er nach De Bruynes Zuspiel allein vor Leno klar drüberschoss (61.). Guardiola nutzte die Schlussphase, um seinen Torjäger ebenso wie De Bruyne, Foden und Kovacic fürs Nachholspiel bei Tottenham am Dienstag (21 Uhr, LIVE! bei kicker) zu schonen. Dort könnte es anspruchsvoller für die Citizens werden als bei Fulham, gegen das sie nun zum 16. Mal hintereinander gewannen.

Den 4:0-Schlusspunkt setzte dabei der eingewechselte Alvarez in der Nachspielzeit. Der Weltmeister wurde von Diop, der dafür Gelb-Rot sah, am Fünfmeterraum ungestüm gefoult und verwandelte den fälligen Elfmeter nach ein paar Diskussionen, weil auch Gvardiol gerne geschossen hätte, sicher (90.+6). Damit verringerte ManCity auch das Defizit in Sachen Tordifferenz gegenüber Arsenal weiter.

Burnley relegated as Van de Ven strikes late to arrest Spurs slide

Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, who resuscitated their top-four hopes.

The Clarets needed a victory to remain in with a chance of surviving and put themselves in the driving seat after Jacob Bruun Larsen opened the scoring.

However, it was all Spurs from then on and Pedro Porro’s bullet strike gave his side the equaliser before the break.

Defender Mickey van de Ven then wrapped up the three points for Ange Postecoglou’s men with a cool finish to confirm Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.

Spurs could still be playing UEFA Champions League football next season, but they must rely on Aston Villa dropping points.

Whilst Vincent Kompany and the Clarets will be disappointed with defeat and relegation it was always going to be a huge ask to come up and stay up given the level of quality in the league.

In fact, if it wasn’t for a string of points deductions from sides above them, they would have been down prior to today.

One consolation is that they will be one of the favourites to bounce straight back next season and they have the perfect manager and squad for it.

As for Spurs, victory sees them end their winless streak of four in the league. However, they will be frustrated they couldn’t put the game to bed sooner and lacked quality missing several chances.

Their rivals for the top four Villa have a tough game against Liverpool on Monday, and they could give Spurs every chance if they fail to win.

Talking Point – The Clarets’ fate is sealed

For a lot of Burnley fans, this was inevitable. Many thought they would be down sooner but an upturn in form led to an unbeaten April.

Ultimately though it wasn’t enough after a heavy defeat against Newcastle United and a loss today.

They will now have to regroup and go again in an unpredictable Championship next season, but if they can keep hold of their quality and experience on and off the pitch then they should be right up there.

Burnley’s owners are ambitious and despite being unable to keep they have the perfect manager in Kompany to continue to lead the project.

Player of the match – Micky van de Ven (Spurs)

The 23-year-old defender has been a delight to watch at Spurs this season and has a bright future ahead of him. Not only did he put in a resilient performance at the back today, he also grabbed the winner.

With full-back Emerson dropped for this game Van der Ven finished the game at left-back and still managed to find his way high up the pitch to fire home and secure the three points.

Gvardiol scores brace as City take one step closer to history with win over Fulham

Josko Gvardiol continued his recent hot-streak in front of goal with a double and Phil Foden made it 25 for the season as Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table with a convincing 4-0 victory at Fulham.

The visitors quickly settled into their task of leapfrogging Arsenal at the summit with Gvardiol polishing off a slick move involving Kevin de Bruyne on 13 minutes.

Fulham struggled to get out of their own half for long spells and were fortunate not to go in at the break further behind with Manuel Akanji volleying a simple chance over the bar.

City were always comfortable but made sure there would be no twist to the script when Foden drilled a low 16-yard shot into the far corner just shy of the hour.

Gvardiol then made it five goals in his last seven matches when he expertly slid home Bernardo Silva’s cross 19 minutes from time.

Fulham had Issa Diop sent off in stoppage time and substitute Julian Alvarez converted the resulting spot kick to put the icing on the cake.

The result sees City move two points clear of rivals Arsenal with just two matches to play. Fulham remain 13th.

Talking Point – Man City’s inevitable surge to the finish line continues at apace

With one week to go, The Citizens are moving ever closer to becoming the first side to ever win four PL titles in a row.

All eyes will now switch to Arsenal’s must-win trip to Manchester United on Sunday, but the big one many have considered as potentially decisive in the race for quite some time, comes on Tuesday night when City visit Tottenham. Should Pep Guardiola’s men avoid a banana skin against a side they have had trouble against in the past, then they will head into the final day of the season at home to West Ham with their title fate firmly in their own hands.

Few expect the Citizens to slip now but Gunners fans will hope for one last dramatic twist and a maybe even an unlikely favour from Spurs. Will there be drama or another City procession? Watch this space….

Player of the match

Josko Gvardiol(Manchester City). The Croatia star has taken time to adapt in England and live up to his billing as one of the best young defenders in the world, but he’s now demonstrating his quality in a City shirt, both with and without the ball, on a consistent basis. Goals will always catch the eye, but his solid work in central or left-sided situations have made him invaluable to Guardiola and Co in the run-in.
