Chalobah and Jackson down struggling Spurs as Chelsea close in on European places

After striking the first dent in Tottenham Hotspur’s title hopes in November, Chelsea may have shattered their London rivals’ Champions League prospects with a dazzling display to triumph 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Two fantastic free-kicks from England duo Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer set up two superb headed goals for Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson as a threadbare Chelsea side outplayed the visitors and showed they’ve not given up on their own European dreams.

Apart from a wave of pressure early in the second-half, Ange Postecoglou’s team were distinctly second-best for much of the evening and failed to take the few chances they did create – including a gilt-edged set-piece opportunity for Cristian Romero to equalise.

The result means Tottenham remain seven points behind Aston Villa and now have just one game in hand during a run-in that features matches against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Meanwhile, with the Premier League top seven all in contention for European football next season, Chelsea have closed to just two points behind seventh-placed Newcastle and three behind Manchester United in sixth.

With the outgoing Thiago Silva becoming the fourteenth name on Mauricio Pochettino’s injury list, the Chelsea boss could only afford to make one change to Postecoglou’s five with both managers navigating a short turnaround the weekend.

However, it was the hosts who looked the more energetic from the off, with Tottenham’s often laboured build-up play rarely threatening Dorde Petrovic’s goal.

Brennan Johnson was the one exception to that rule, with the electric Welshman’s direct runs giving Tottenham their only spark in the first-half, but the lack of penetration from the other wing was the biggest surprise.

Up against the most experienced player on the pitch with just ten Premier League caps under his own belt, Alfie Gilchrist looked to be in for a tough evening at right-back but the reality was anything but that.

Son Heung-Min didn’t register a touch in the final third in the opening 45 minutes and despite Postecoglou introducing James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – all dropped to the bench after the derby defeat to Arsenal – Chelsea enjoyed the better second-half opportunities too.

Pochettino didn’t have anything like those substitute options, with only two outfield players on his bench possessing any Premier League experience – but his young guns showed there’s hope for next season at Stamford Bridge.

Talking point: Pendulum swings in two European races

A boisterous rendition of ‘Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that’ rung around Stamford Bridge after Jackson’s goal effectively sealed the win for Chelsea.

It may also ensure Tottenham are hearing that chant for another 24 months, as they took yet another hammer blow to their Champions League prospects.

With Borussia Dortmund ensuring only the Premier League’s top four can qualify for the Champions League, Tottenham now need require a miracle – but fifth-place would still constitute a successful first season for Postecoglou after Kane’s departure.

Chelsea can start dreaming once again though, with West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Bournemouth left on the schedule then a tilt at the Conference or even Europa League remains on the cards, particularly if they can replicate tonight’s performance.

There were standouts all over the field, with the centre-back pairing looking rock-solid throughout and expertly linked to the front four by Moises Caicedo and in particular Conor Gallagher.

The pace of Palmer, Jackson, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk had their opponents looking rattled almost every time they broke forward too, with the 2-0 scoreline a deserved margin of victory.

Player of the match: Conor Gallagher

Chalobah’s first-half interventions to score and save a goal in the first-half were incredibly impressive, but captaining a young team, 24-year-old Conor Gallagher looked like a veteran ten years older to lead his side to victory.

While Palmer’s free-kick assist for Jackson’s goal will deservedly grab the headlines, Gallagher drew the foul that started that passage of possession off and his delivery for Chalobah’s first was inch-perfect too.

Match highlights

6’ – OFF THE LINE!!! Wow it’s exploded into life now though! Conor Gallagher robbed Pedro Porro allowing Nicolas Jackson to burst clear of a scrambling Spurs , the striker’s shot squirmed under Guglielmo Vicario and he turned away to celebrate, but didn’t reckon on Micky van de Ven! The fastest player in the Premier League put his pace to good work there, clearing off his own line to safety despite a ricochet off Cole Palmer at point-blank range… Game on!!

24’ – GOAL! CHELSEA 1-0 TOTTENHAM (CHALOBAH) It’s another set-piece goal against Tottenham, but that was all about Chelsea brilliance! Gallagher swung in a pinpoint deep free-kick and met Trevor Chalobah all alone but with plenty to do around ten yards out, he produces a perfect header though, looping over Vicario and into the net!

38’ – HAD TO SCORE! Wow. A foul on Richarlison buys Spurs precious attacking position in line with the penalty area, and it’s almost perfectly executed as a cross flashes in to Cristian Romero in front of goal just a few yards out. However, he can’t redirect the ball quite enough and it flies past the post with the net gaping.

45+2’ – CHALOBAH AGAIN! It’s at the other end of the field, but that intervention is just as important as his goal! A lightning-quick 1-2 between Johnson and Porro allowed the Welshman to pull the ball back to Sarr, but Chalobah got in front of his shot for a crucial block.

72’ – GOAL!! CHELSEA 2-0 TOTTENHAM (JACKSON): It’s Jackson on the scoresheet but that is ALL ABOUT COLE PALMER! His screaming free-kick from over 25 yards out that crunches the crossbar, then Jackson is quickest to respond with a fantastic header that arcs over Son and Hojbjerg and into the net!!!

United plan clearout to fund Guehi and Kilman bids – Paper Round

United plan defensive swoops

Manchester United reportedly hope to sign two defenders, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and Wolves’ Max Kilman, and a forward in the summer.

To fund their targets, the Mirror reports that almost every player at Old Trafford is up for sale if the right offer comes in.

The paper states: “Manchester United will struggle to overhaul their underperforming squad in the summer transfer window due to financial restrictions.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is hoping to make sweeping changes at United in the off-season after completing his takeover in February. Alongside INEOS’ head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, he has begun to implement his vision to get the club back on track.

“As such, United are likely to focus on offloading unwanted players in the upcoming transfer window.

“They have to sell in order to buy new players and it is open season, with United considering everyone apart from young talents Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Hojlund to be up for sale this summer.

“If they can buy players then a centre-back and a centre-forward are the priorities for United this summer. Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Wolves’ Max Kilman are targets, while a replacement for Martial will be sought.”

Ajax want Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is wanted by his former side Ajax, it has been claimed.

However the Dutch side may only be able to secure his signature if he is sacked by his current club.

The Sun writes: “Erik ten Hag could be set for a sensational return to Ajax after the Dutch giants made him their top boss target.

‘The Manchester United boss, 54, is coming under increasing pressure at Old Trafford after a dismal second season at the helm.

“But Ten Hag’s stock remains high in his homeland – with Ajax waiting in the wings to bring him back.

“Ten Hag enjoyed a superb four-and-a-half-year spell with the Eredivisie giants between 2017 and 2022.

“But Ajax are aware Ten Hag would be reluctant to walk away from Man Utd, so they are reliant on him being sacked.”

Chelsea set to lose Gallagher

A lack of progress to extend Conor Gallagher’s contract at Chelsea could see the player leave this summer.

A host of clubs are queuing up to sign the England international, though Mauricio Pochettino wants him to stay.

The Daily Mail claims: “Chelsea are nearing a summer in which they might not only lose a leader in Thiago Silva but also Conor Gallagher, with interested clubs buoyed by the lack of a breakthrough over a new deal.

“Gallagher, 24, is set to enter his final year of his contract with the club he joined at the age of eight. Talks over extending his stay have been ongoing for several months, yet Chelsea insiders say the situation remains the same with five games of the Premier League season to go.

“Mauricio Pochettino wants his relentless runner to stay, though the manager himself is not sure how much input he will be allowed into the club’s transfer business this summer. Previous windows were largely handled by sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.

“Chelsea insist their relationship with Gallagher is strong but they have shown a willingness towards selling him in the past and rivals are poised to swoop this summer.

“That includes Tottenham, Chelsea’s opponents this Thursday whose style of play under Ange Postecoglou would suit Gallagher’s box-to-box qualities. Newcastle, Liverpool, West Ham, Everton, Brighton and Fulham have also been linked with the England international previously.”

Brentford chase former Arsenal forward

Amani Richards, once of Chelsea and Arsenal at youth level, is being chased by another London side, Brentford.

The Leicester academy forward is a target for the Bees and QPR as he looks for first-team action.

“The 19-year-old is out of contract at the King Power Stadium this summer and will be available on a free transfer.

“London-born Richards, who can play either as a striker or on the right wing, could return to the capital after emerging from Chelsea’s academy before joining Arsenal and then Leicester.

‘Sunderland and clubs in Germany, Belgium and Denmark are also interested in his services.”

Exclusive: ‘I’m not surprised’ – Boga on De Zerbi, Chelsea and why Ben Arfa is an idol

Speaking exclusively to TNT Sports, Nice midfielder Jeremie Boga discussed his decision to join Chelsea at just 11 years old, and his love of Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard, and Hatem Ben Arfa. Boga also discusses what Nice can do to become a fixture in the top three in Ligue 1.

Editor’s note – This interview with Jeremie Boga was conducted by Martin Mosnier for Eurosport France and has been translated and adapted by TNT Sports UK. It is presented here in Q&A format. Questions will be in italics.

What drives an 11-year-old boy to leave Marseille and join Chelsea?

J.B.: There are several explanations. Didier Drogba was the first reason I went to Chelsea. He was a role model for all young Ivorians. His career inspired me and motivated me. Once I’d done the trials there, seen the facilities, their mentality and their plan for me, my whole family was won over, especially me. That’s why we decided to leave so early.

You only played 18 minutes in the Premier League with Chelsea. Looking back, do you still think you made the right choice?

J.B.: It’s a choice I’ve made with no regrets. In fact, it was the best choice for my young career. I’ve learnt a lot, played with some very good players and under some very good coaches. I won a lot of youth titles from the U17s to the U23s. It was a wonderful experience and I don’t regret it at all. At Chelsea, everything went really well. It’s a club that gives a lot of freedom to the players, especially in attack, that lets us be creative and lets us express ourselves.

Did the increase in loan spells (Rennes, Granada, Birmingham) slow down your arrival at the highest level?

J.B.: It wasn’t easy, I’ve already played in four different countries. But it was also necessary for my progress and my mental strength. I’ve grown and matured thanks to these experiences. If I had to advise a young player today, I’d say that it’s better to have a long-term project, and frankly, loans aren’t great.

You played alongside Nathan Aké, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Andreas Christensen at youth level. Do you have any regrets about their careers?

J.B.: No, I have no regrets, I’m happy for them. We had some very good years together with Chelsea’s youth teams. After that, everyone has their own path. Football is all about timing, it’s God who decides. For me, it just wasn’t the right time. They had their chance and they took it. So much the better.

Like Paul Pogba, would you like to return to Chelsea or the Premier League one day to finish the job?

J.B. You never close the door, but I’ve just arrived at Nice, I’ve signed a long contract and I’m focused on Nice. But you never know what might happen in the future.

Between Roberto De Zerbi saying that only Messi was better than you at one-on-one, and Francesco Farioli saying that you are one of the best players in the world in this area: is it easy to take on such praise?

J.B.: It’s not easy. But I have to take it on board. I know I’m good at dribbling. It’s something I’ve had in me since I was a kid. It’s getting harder and harder because the defenders know me, they know what I like to do, how I like to move and how I like to dribble.

Do you have any references or role models who have inspired you?

J.B.: I have my top three: Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard and Hatem Ben Arfa. If you go to my YouTube stories, you’ll see all three at the top of the page. It shows how much I follow them, how much I try to draw inspiration from them. For me, they’re the three best players in the world.

What separates you, for example, from Ben Arfa, another great dribbler who did rather well at Nice?

J.B.: Honestly, it’s in the final touch and finishing that I need to improve. Those players entertained the crowd, they made people go wild, but there were also a lot of goals and assists. That’s where I want to go.

For you, football is above all about getting the crowds up?

J.B.: That’s right. Football is still a game. When we were young, we didn’t worry too much about tactics. It was just about having fun with your friends and we mustn’t lose that childlike pleasure. Even if results are obviously very important, we mustn’t forget the fun side.

In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Eden Hazard said that football wasn’t a job but a game, and that training and recovery weren’t his thing. Would you agree with that definition?

J.B.: I totally agree with him. Not necessarily on what he says about training or recovery, but on the enjoyment aspect. These days, everyone is focused on stats and goals. That’s important, I agree, but you can’t lose sight of the enjoyment you get from playing for the fans and getting the crowd going. You have to treasure that.

Roberto De Zerbi is the embodiment of that kind of football. He is being touted by some of the biggest clubs. What role has he played in your career?

J.B.: We had a very good relationship, he often shouted at me because he wanted me to do more. He gave me freedom and revealed many facets of my game. He also helped me a lot tactically. I made a lot of progress with him and if I’m where I am today, it’s thanks to him. I’m not surprised by what’s happened to him today. As soon as he arrived in Italy, it was immediately clear that he was going to be a great coach. I recognise myself in his football, it’s similar to that of coach Farioli. For a player like me who likes to dribble, these systems are perfect.

How would you rate your first season at Nice under Farioli?

J.B.: I’d say I’ve had a good season, but I can do more. In terms of stats, I can improve, be even more present in matches and more effective. That’s something I’m working on.

The LFP helped you by awarding you the goal against Lorient…

J.B.: (laughs) After that, I think my shot was on target but, yes, I’d like to thank them.

How do you explain Nice’s difficulties in the second half of the season?

J.B.: We had a lot of injuries, we had the African Cup of Nations… That’s no excuse, but we had a bit of a slump. All teams do, but ours took a bit longer. But today, we’re still here. We’re 5th and we’re still on target.

How can Nice stabilise in the top three of Ligue 1 in the future?

J.B.: Honestly, I think we’ve got everything. We’ve got young talent, experienced players and a staff that’s behind us. It’s a stable, family-oriented club. We just need to be a bit more consistent, especially in the off-peak periods.

Khephren Thuram is one of the strong men in your team. Does he impress you?

J.B.: For me, he’s a modern midfielder. He has everything: he’s complete, he’s physical, he’s technical, he grabs the ball… He’s very good for us. I know his brother very well, so I’ve known him for a long time. But seeing him in real life is impressive. Sometimes he breaks through and you wonder how he does it.
