Amdouni snatches late draw for Burnley to deny Man Utd home victory

The substitute Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty gave relegation-threatened Burnley a deserved draw at Old Trafford. Manchester United and Burnley had 43 shots between them, 17 on target, in a wildly open game at Old Trafford.

For a while it looked like it would be one of the more peverse goalless draws in Premier League history. Bruno Fernandes smacked the post in the first half before Andre Onana made two outstanding saves to deny Lyle Foster.

Both teams continued to miss chances in the second half before Antony finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, pouncing on a loose pass from Sander Berge to finish decisively. It was his first league goal at Old Trafford since he scored on his debut against Arsenal in September 2022.

Burnley equalised eight minutes later when VAR penalised Andre Onana for smashing Andouni in the face when he came for a cross. Andouni took the penalty himself, calmly sending Onana the wrong way.

There were late opportunities at both ends as the two sides pushed desperately for a winner. A draw, however entertaining, is not ideal for either side. Man Utd’s hopes of finishing in the top five are realistically over, while Burnley missed the chance to jump above Luton and move level on points with Nottingham Forest.

Talking Point – Another United basketball game

Don’t be fooled by the modest scoreline: this could easily have ended 3-3 or 4-3, as a few of Manchester United matches have in the last two months. The good news for Erik ten Hag is that they continue to create a flurry of chances. But for a side that aspires to challenge the best – and who are playing Manchester City in the FA Cup final next month – they remain extraordinarily vulnerable in defence. While a grotesque injury list offers partial mitigation, United are miles away from where they were last season, never mind under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Player of the Match – Dara O’Shea (Burnley)

Burnley’s positive, possession-based approach means their centre-halves are generally very busy. Dara O’Shea found himself one v one throughout the game but was largely immaculate, particularly against the pacy Alejandro Garnacho. An eye-catching defensive performance was capped in the last minute when he denied Scott McTominay an open goal with a marvellous last-ditch tackle.

Player Ratings

Man Utd: Onana 7, Wan-Bissaka 6, Casemiro 6, Maguire 7, Dalot 6, Mainoo 6, Eriksen 6, Antony 8, Bruno Fernandes 7, Garnacho 6, Hojlund 6. Subs: Amrabat 6, Mount 6, Diallo 7, McTominay 6.

Burnley: Muric 7, Assignon 7, O’Shea 8, Esteve 7, Vitinho 6, Foster 6, Berge 6, Cullen 7, Bruun Larsen 7, Odobert 7, Fofana 6. Subs: Gudmundsson 6, Amdouni 7.

Match Highlights

20’ – FERNANDES HITS THE POST! A cross from the left is controlled by Hojlund, who goes down under a challenge. The ball breaks to Fernandes, who wallops a left-foot shot from the angle that thumps off the near post.

35’ – GREAT SAVE BY ONANA! Bruun Larsen’s free-kick is headed away to the edge of the area. Cullen sweeps it back on the volley, Foster heads at goal from eight yards and Onana changes direction to tip it over the bar. That’s a magnificent reaction save.

79’ –GOAL! MAN UTD 1-0 BURNLEY (ANTONY) Antony breaks the deadlock at last! It came from a mistake by Sander Berge, whose pass across the line of the defence was intercepted by Antony. He surged through, resisted a recovery challenge from Antony – he could have gone down – and forced a shot back across Muric. That’s a really well-taken goal.

86’ – PENALTY TO BURNLEY A weird header from Casemiro leads to Onana inadvertently whacking Andouni in the face after the ball has gone. Play continues but then VAR gets involved. Onana got away with a similar incident against Wolves on his Man Utd debut, but everyone agreed it was the wrong decision and this time the penalty has been given.

87’ –GOAL! MAN UTD 1-1 BURNLEY (AMDOUNI PEN) Amdouni scores, calmly sending Onana the wrong way! It’s a huge goal for Burnley, and a deserved equaliser on the balance of play.

90+1’ – GREAT DEFENDING BY O’SHEA! Antony’s clever pass finds Casemiro in space on the right side of the area. He draws the keeper and squares the ball in front of an open goal, where O’Shea gets across McTominay to make an outstanding challenge.

90+5’ – GOOD SAVE BY ONANA! Odobert dizzies Wan-Bissaka with a stepover and rifles a shot that is well blocked at the near post by Onana. Both teams have had so many chances.

Villa drop points in dramatic draw, Luton snatch late winner to boost survival hopes

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa suffered a blow to their top-four hopes despite leading by two goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Brentford at Villa Park.

Thomas Frank left Ivan Toney on the bench, which gave Watkins the chance to impress as the pair compete for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Watkins got off to a fine start on his return from injury with a goal to put the hosts ahead when his close-range header narrowly crossed the line at the front post.

A minute into the second half, Morgan Rogers brilliantly doubled Villa’s lead when he latched onto Youri Tielemans’ through ball before lashing a strike into the bottom-right corner.

Mathias Jorgensen pulled a goal back for Brentford, scrappily turning in Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross, before the visitors completed the comeback two minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo’s volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Remarkably, Brentford took the lead shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa tapped Sergio Reguilon’s dangerous cross into an empty net.

However, Watkins grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left on the clock to save Unai Emery’s side from defeat and earn what could be an invaluable point.

The result leaves Villa just three points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in fifth place, and Spurs have two games in hand.

Hatters claim big win

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town came from behind to secure a huge three points in their bid for survival following a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road.

After a goalless opening period, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead five minutes into the second half with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards out.

Luton hit back through Jordan Clark, who made an excellent run through the midfield before laying the ball to Luke Berry, who was almost dispossessed, but Clark was in the right place at the right time to wrap his foot around the loose ball and fire past Neto.

As the game entered added time, substitute Cauley Woodrow floated an inviting ball into the box which Luton captain Carlton Morris turned in from close range.

Rob Edwards’ side remain in the bottom three, but are now six points clear of 19th place Burnley and level on points with Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Hammers win after late drama

West Ham United came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolves, despite some late VAR controversy.

Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead from the spot before Lucas Paqueta did the same for The Hammers as the game entered the latter stages.

James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead in memorable fashion, as his corner from the left swirled over everyone in the box and directly into the top-right corner.

Wolves thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Max Kilman’s header was dramatically ruled out for offside.

Newcastle claim narrow win

In west London, Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal gave Newcastle a 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage for their first away victory since February.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead through Fabian Schar who found the net from a tight angle, but the goal was ruled out due to Dan Burn’s foul on Calvin Bassey in the build-up.

But Fulham could not keep Newcastle out for much longer, as Guimaraes fired Newcastle ahead in the 81st minute.

Everton win relegation battle with Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat 10-man Burnley 1-0 for their first victory in 10 matches.

As Sean Dyche’s side held on for a much-needed three points, Dara O’Shea was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Dwight McNeil.

Fresh woe for Chelsea as Burnley snatch late equaliser

Cole Palmer’s brace proved in vein as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by ten-man Burnley in the Premier League.

The Blues were pegged back twice at Stamford Bridge where, despite Lorenz Assignon’s early red card, second-half goals from Josh Cullen and Dara O’Shea rescued a precious point for the relegation-threatened Clarets.

Having gone close through Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson – as well as seeing Axel Disasi denied by VAR – Chelsea broke through just before half-time.

Assignon was dismissed for a second yellow card after bundling over Mykhailo Mudryk in the box, before Palmer’s delightful Panenka from the penalty spot put the hosts in front.

Burnley responded within two minutes of the restart. Cullen played a neat one-two with substitute Josh Brownhill, and drilled a tremendous 20-yard volley past Djordje Petrovic.

Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead in the 78th minute, latching onto Raheem Sterling’s neat flick before slotting past Arijanet Muric.

However, the visitors hit back four minutes later as O’Shea headed in another equaliser.

Both sides went close to snatching all three points late on. Sterling nodded wide from close range, while Jay Rodriguez headed against the crossbar as the points were shared at the Bridge.
