Man Utd draw up defender shortlist including Bayern centre-back Upamecano – Paper Round

United target three defenders

Manchester United have three central defenders in mind when they look to reinforce this summer.

The Sun reports that Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, Benfica’s Antonio Silva and Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice are all under consideration.

“Manchester United have drawn-up a three-man shortlist of centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window,” the paper claims.

“New partial owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will look to revolutionise The Red Devils’ squad ahead of next season.

“United are interested in Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano.

“The 25-year-old has tumbled down the pecking order of late, falling behind former Tottenham star Eric Dier.

“Also on United’s list is Upamecano’s French compatriot Jean-Clair Todibo.

“The third defender on United’s radar is Benfica’s Antonio Silva.”

Real Madrid expect to land Mbappe

Spanish newspaper Marca confirms that Real Madrid are expected to sign Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The Frenchman’s deal has long been rumoured, but is yet to be announced.

The paper discusses that Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr. and Endrick are just part of Real’s plans, saying: “These three Brazilians, initially signed by Real Madrid as promising talents in their homeland, with very little first-team experience at the time, will bolster the team’s attacking arsenal from July 2024. But they won’t be alone. Their primary accomplice will be Jude Bellingham.

“Additionally, the arrivals of Brahim, Joselu, Arda Guler, and possibly Kylian Mbappe will further fortify Madrid’s offensive capabilities. While Mbappe has yet to confirm his future club, many anticipate his move to Real Madrid after the French forward confirmed he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

“With the potential additions of Mbappe and Endrick, Real Madrid’s attack promises to soar to new heights, potentially uniting the Brazilian prodigy with the world’s best player.”

Silva set to leave Chelsea

The Mirror believes that Chelsea’s Brazilian veteran defender Thiago Silva will leave at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old will come to the end of his contract and there have been no suggestions that talks will take place.

The paper states: “Thiago Silva is expected to leave Chelsea at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract – ending his four-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

“The Brazilian veteran, 39, joined The Blues in the summer of 2020 and won the Champions League in his debut season under Thomas Tuchel, establishing himself as a firm fan favourite in west London.

“However, there have been no formal talks over a contract extension to date and sources have now indicated that barring a significant U-turn, Silva is poised to depart on a free transfer when his current deal is up. It’s no secret that former club Fluminense have been working tirelessly on a move to bring the former PSG captain home.

“Fluminense’s president Mario Bittencourt revealed earlier this week that he remains in close contact with the experienced Brazil international and that he has made it abundantly clear the door is wide open for an emotional return.”

De Zerbi considers Brighton exit

The Telegraph reports that Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has no plans to sign a new contract with the club.

The paper explains that the Italian is linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich as both sides look for a new manager.

“Roberto De Zerbi has cast doubt on his Brighton future amid expected interest from Liverpool, revealing that he wants talks with owner Tony Bloom after not agreeing a new contract,” the paper notes.

“With vacancies this summer at Liverpool and Bayern Munich, De Zerbi’s situation is being closely monitored and the Italian very noticeably admitted that the “problem” in his Brighton talks would be to find the same long-term vision.

“De Zerbi, who replaced Graham Potter in 2022, has a contract until 2026 at Brighton, where he has established himself as one of the best young managers in Europe after leading the club into Europe with a sixth-placed finish.

“However, when asked if he could sign a new contract at Brighton, De Zerbi gave a strikingly uncertain answer. ‘At the moment, no,’ he said ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool. ‘We didn’t find the agreement. The contract is a part of the future. It’s important for me, it’s important for everyone but it’s a small part, the big part is the plan.’”

Fresh woe for Chelsea as Burnley snatch late equaliser

Cole Palmer’s brace proved in vein as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by ten-man Burnley in the Premier League.

The Blues were pegged back twice at Stamford Bridge where, despite Lorenz Assignon’s early red card, second-half goals from Josh Cullen and Dara O’Shea rescued a precious point for the relegation-threatened Clarets.

Having gone close through Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson – as well as seeing Axel Disasi denied by VAR – Chelsea broke through just before half-time.

Assignon was dismissed for a second yellow card after bundling over Mykhailo Mudryk in the box, before Palmer’s delightful Panenka from the penalty spot put the hosts in front.

Burnley responded within two minutes of the restart. Cullen played a neat one-two with substitute Josh Brownhill, and drilled a tremendous 20-yard volley past Djordje Petrovic.

Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead in the 78th minute, latching onto Raheem Sterling’s neat flick before slotting past Arijanet Muric.

However, the visitors hit back four minutes later as O’Shea headed in another equaliser.

Both sides went close to snatching all three points late on. Sterling nodded wide from close range, while Jay Rodriguez headed against the crossbar as the points were shared at the Bridge.

Liverpool face Amorim or De Zerbi decision after Alonso ruled out as Klopp replacement – Paper Round

Liverpool need to pay up for Amorim

The Telegraph reports that Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has a £12.8 million release clause which could be activated at the end of the season.

Liverpool are one of the favourites to land the manager as they search for a replacement for the outgoing Jurgen Klopp.

“Telegraph Sport understands the release clause in Amorim’s contract, that can be triggered at the end of this season, is €15 million.

“The clause, agreed with Sporting Lisbon, drops to €10m (£8.5m) in the summer of 2025 – and its existence means it will be easier for Liverpool to agree a deal with the Portuguese club should they eventually decide to make a move for the highly rated 39-year-old.

“It had previously been claimed in Portugal that the figure to release Amorim, who signed a new four-year deal in 2022, was significantly higher – around twice as much.”

Brighton want big payout for De Zerbi

The Mirror believes that Roberto De Zerbi would cost Liverpool the same figure as Amorim – £12.8m – to replace Klopp next season.

Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain with Bayer Leverkusen has slightly narrowed the potential candidates this summer

The paper reports: “Liverpool will have to fork out a cool £12.8 million if they want to make Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi their next manager.

“The Reds have learned that most talked-about target Xabi Alonso is now leaning towards staying at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season, ruling him out of the race to succeed Jurgen Klopp. His Leverkusen side are 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with just eight games to go, having gone unbeaten for the entire season so far in all competitions.

“Given that he could potentially have a treble on his CV come June, Alonso is arguably Europe’s most sought-after manager, especially aged 42. But like fellow admirers Bayern Munich, Liverpool are now being forced to look elsewhere for their next boss and De Zerbi has emerged as a leading candidate for both clubs.

“Brighton aren’t willing to let him go on the cheap, however, with the Premier League side likely to demand his full €15m (£12.8m) release clause should the Italian want to leave, just like the £21.5m they received in Graham Potter’s exit to Chelsea. De Zerbi, 44, is also being eyed by Barcelona, who are limited when it comes to how much they can spend but remain interested in a move.”

Chelsea set to keep three youngsters

Chelsea have been known to sell on their young players to balance the books, but the Evening Standard thinks that Alfie Gilchrist, Jimi Tauriainen and Mason Burstow will not be sold next summer.

The paper writes that, “Gilchrist is expected to stick around next season despite Chelsea’s intention to sign both a new left-back and centre-back.”

Of Tauriainen, the story comments: “The 20-year-old midfielder made his debut against Leeds in the FA Cup.

“An injury-hit spell since joining Chelsea has slowed his progress, but he finally made his Finland Under-21s debut this month.

“He will count as a homegrown player by the summer and will target a loan move to continue his development.”

And for Burstow: “Just one goal in 20 Championship appearances has seen Burstow face criticism and a difficult learning curve at the Stadium of Light.

“But he remains highly regarded at Chelsea. With just one year left on his contract, his option is likely to be used and another loan sought in the summer.”

Newcastle target Maldini

Paolo Maldini and Hugo Viana are both in the running to replace Dan Ashworth as sporting director at Newcastle.

The Sun suggests that with Newcastle looking to agree a deal with Manchester United to let Ashworth move on, a replacement is being targeted.

The paper states: “AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini and former Newcastle ace Hugo Viana are among the candidates to replace outgoing sporting director Dan Ashworth at St James’ Park.

“Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave as The Magpies and Manchester United continue to negotiate a complicated deal that could see him moving to Old Trafford this summer.

“The 53-year-old’s contract runs out in 2026 and United are trying to thrash out a compensation deal with the Toon who have demanded double the £10 million offered.”

Chelsea progress into semi-finals after second-leg draw against Ajax

Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax in their Women’s Champions League quarter-final, but their work was already done from the first leg as they advance into the semi-finals.

Mayra Ramirez’s 34th-minute goal gave the Blues an unassailable aggregate advantage at Stamford Bridge, while Chasity Grant gave the Dutch side a glimmer of hope after 65 minutes.

However, Emma Hayes’ Chelsea were able to cruise into the last four in second gear, with a shade of complacency about them, as they were given a good test by Suzanne Bakker’s side.

This was a game of chances for both sides, as Romee Leuchter went closest for the visitors, while Zecira Musovic had her heart in her mouth after her clearance clattered off the pressing Tiny Hoekstra and kissed the foot of the post in an even first 45 minutes.

But Chelsea’s experience told, as Ramirez worked a yard of space to slot home beyond Regina van Eijk after being found by Guro Reiten.

The visitors responded with a second-half suckerpunch as Grant tucked the ball underneath Musovic following Rosa van Gool’s through pass to set up an interesting last 25 minutes in west London, and the Dutch side had their tails up as they sought the unlikeliest of comebacks.

But Chelsea were wily in their play, seeing out the tie to sail into the semis.

Talking point – A tricky test ahead of cup final number one

It wasn’t all plain-sailing for Hayes’ side, as Ajax posed their problems on the counter-attack, and the home side were sloppy in possession, particularly at the back.

Hayes had made changes – as she had the right to do considering the 3-0 advantage coming into this match – but certain deputies might not have played themselves into her plans for this weekend’s League Cup final against Arsenal.

Musovic made some decent saves towards the end, but was nervy with her feet, while Jess Carter and Kadeisha Buchanan also gave the ball away in silly positions when looking to play out from the back.

They may be through, and that’s all they’ll care about, but this was not a vintage Emma Hayes Chelsea performance by any means.

Player of the match – Erin Cuthbert, Chelsea

Composed, calm, classy.

The Scotswoman was the heartbeat of the side, making everything tick in the middle of the park.

She showed great technique and footwork in tight areas, and excellent defensive awareness for second and third player runs off her shoulder.

She is crucial to this side.

Match highlights

17’: CLOSE! That’s the closest that Ajax have come to getting on the scoresheet as the ball bounces into her path, and she spins Buchanan well before getting a snapshot off. However, she miscues it and it drifts wide of the far corner!

18’: OH MY GOODNESS! Tiny Hoekstra is so close to giving Ajax the lead as she charges down Musovic’s clearance, and the ball hits the onrushing winger and heads goalbound, but it clips the edge of the post and is away to safety. Not the best moment for Chelsea’s goalkeeper there!

34’: GOAL! CHELSEA 1-0 AJAX (RAMIREZ) On her debut in this competition for the Blues, Mayra Ramirez shows just why they signed her in January. Acres of space opened up on the right side of the Ajax defence, which the Colombian took full advantage of, gathering Reiten’s pass to stroke home beyond the helpless van Eijk. 1-0 Chelsea on the night, 4-0 on aggregate.

65’: GOAL! CHELSEA 1-1 AJAX (GRANT) A great goal to equalise on the night, as van Gool slides through a pass to Chasity Grant, who curves her run well to stay onside. She slots a tame effort underneath Musovic, who perhaps could have done better.

81’: GOOD SAVE! Leuchter still can’t score as she steps inside of Jess Carter, shaping it onto her right, but she didn’t put it wide enough of the keeper, who makes the save from close range.
