Arsenal and City to battle over £100m Guimaraes – Paper Round

City and Arsenal to compete for Guimaraes

Manchester City and Arsenal are set to compete for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to The Telegraph.

The Brazilian has also been linked to Paris Saint-Germain, with £100 million his rumoured release clause.

The paper reports: “Arsenal and Manchester City are both considering a summer move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, raising the prospect of the two title-chasers going head-to-head for the same player for the second year in a row.

“Arsenal and City battled for the signature of Declan Rice last summer, with Arsenal eventually winning the race after agreeing to pay a club-record fee of £105 million to West Ham United.

“And the two sides could be set for a similar situation this summer if they both decide to formalise their initial interest in Bruno , who has excelled at Newcastle since joining the club in January 2022.

“Telegraph Sport understands that Bruno is aware of Arsenal and City’s admiration, while there have also been numerous reports linking the Brazil international with Paris St-Germain.

“Bruno is thought to have a release clause of around £100 million in his contract, although that would not necessarily prevent interested clubs from trying to strike a deal at a lower price.”

Ten Hag set for United exit

The Sun believes that Erik ten Hag is set to leave Manchester United after the FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry at the weekend.

The poor performance means that he has tried the patience of United’s owners and fans for too long, with Graham Potter a potential replacement.

The paper writes: “Erik ten Hag is heading for the Old Trafford exit door after losing the faith of Manchester United fans.

“Sunday’s embarrassing display, despite beating Championship side Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final, was the last straw for many.

“United’s hierarchy witnessed the turning of the tide in person as the Red Devils faithful streamed out of Wembley rather than celebrate a penalty shootout win which came after they had let slip a commanding 3-0 lead.

“Co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer were there with new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has assumed sporting control of the club.

“Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is the leading contender to take the job in the summer.”

Arsenal track Bologna forward Zirkzee

The Mirror claims that Arsenal are keen on Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.

The 22-year-old Dutch player has long been linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United, and AC Milan also interested.

The paper states: “Arsenal are keeping tabs on Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster the Gunners attack in time for another title tilt next term.

“The Dutch forward has long been the subject of rumours that the north Londoners will launch a bid for him sooner rather than later as they continue their hunt for a lethal marksman in front of goal. However, Arsenal aren’t the only side keen on his services, with fellow Premier League outfit Manchester United and Serie A titans AC Milan also admirers of Zirkzee’s talent.

“The 22-year-old has previously claimed that his talent is a product of the “Johan Cruyff courts” in his home country, a street footballer who made it all the way to Bayern Munich.”

West Ham ready to pay up for Amorim

The Daily Mail believes that Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim could join West Ham as Liverpool’s interest recedes.

The Londoners are said to be willing to offer a serious pay rise to entice the boss to the Premier League.

The paper explains: “In-demand manager Ruben Amorim remained tight-lipped as the Liverpool target returned to Portugal after a whirlwind trip to London following talks with West Ham over succeeding David Moyes at the helm.

“On Monday, the Sporting Lisbon boss flew to the English capital to speak with the Hammers as they assess the future of the club beyond the end of the season.

“And upon his return to his homeland hours later, landing just after midnight on Tuesday, the 39-year-old was met by a swarm of journalists asking about his future.

“Amorim could be available to English clubs for £12.8million and was top of Liverpool’s list but is no longer the preferred candidate for the Anfield job.

“And it’s emerged that the Hammers have offered the Portuguese manager a greater lucrative package to move to east London than their upcoming opponents on Saturday did.”

Serie A title and futures on the line as San Siro braces for Milan Derby for the ages

If an Inter Milan fan had the chance to script how they would win a landmark 20th Serie A title, this would be it.

On Monday night, the most tantalising prospect imaginable is within the grasp of the Nerazzurri.

Win against their fiercest rivals AC Milan and the title is theirs. It would be the first time a Serie A championship had ever been won in a derby match.

Win, and they will edge ahead of Milan into sole second place in the all-time Scudetto list with 20 titles, behind only Juventus on 36. That would earn them a second golden star on their jersey next season, as the coveted stitch is awarded for every 10 league crowns conquered.

Win, and they will have the league wrapped up with five games to spare.

Win, and they might well end the Stefano Pioli era on the other side of town – and under their enemy’s noses, with this game being a Milan ‘home’ match.

This most mouthwatering of Serie A showdowns will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+ on Monday, April 22.

Record-smashing Inter setting the bar high

The odds are stacked against Milan delaying the inevitable Inter title party.

By almost every measure, Simone Inzaghi’s men have bettered their neighbours this season, and the combination of the form book, recent history and contrasting atmospheres at the two clubs make a blue-and-black celebration look likely.

Inter have the best attack in the league by a distance, with 77 goals scored to next-best Milan’s 63, and the best defence by a landslide with 17 conceded to next-best Bologna’s 25.

Lautaro Martinez is miles ahead at the top of the scoring charts, with 23 goals to nearest rival Dusan Vlahovic’s 16, while they are the first team to score in each of their first 32 games in a season.

It does not end there. With 26 wins in 32 games – and only one defeat – Inter are fast closing in on the club record of 30 wins in a single league campaign set back in 2006/07, the year after the Calciopoli scandal that saw Juventus demoted and Fiorentina, Milan and Lazio receive points deductions.

Last season’s surprising run to the UEFA Champions League final gave this team an extra swagger that has been evident throughout the campaign and the architect of that run, Inzaghi, is closing in on his sixth trophy in three years as Inter coach but his career-first league title.

The Inter coach is a man who likes to not look too far ahead, but even he could not help but admit that Monday’s Milanese spectacle is an opportunity that cannot be missed.

“Winning the title of the second star in the derby would obviously be nice. We’re preparing to try and cross the finish line on Monday,” he said.

The good news for Interisti is that Inzaghi appears to be going nowhere soon despite having only one year left on his contract.

“At the end of the season we will sit down and talk; there won’t be any problems to continue on this path together,” he said last week. It’s a daunting prospect for the rest of the league.

Pioli feeling the heat at stumbling Milan

Things on the other side of Milan are not looking quite as rosy, to say the least.

A glance at the league table might tell you that the Rossoneri are on course for a comfortable and creditable runners-up finish, but the atmosphere at the club is far from content after a year when momentum has stalled.

Coach Stefano Pioli has been in the firing line and media reports in Italy suggest that Monday’s game could be decisive.

Although he led the Rossoneri to their first Scudetto in 11 years in 2021/22 and their first Champions League semi-final since 2007 last season, Pioli has struggled to get his team ticking this term.

Thursday’s Europa League exit to a Roma side sitting three places below them in the league standings led to a public dressing-down of the squad from angry visiting fans as tensions deepened.

The following day, Gazzetta dello Sport described Pioli as “trembling” ahead of Monday’s derby, and even said “the derby might not be enough” to secure another season at the helm.

Milan’s senior players have also come in for criticism after an inconsistent season that can be summed up by the last two months as they were on a seven-match winning run before defeats in both legs of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final sandwiched a wild 3-3 draw with second-bottom Sassuolo.

After exiting Europe with a whimper, a runners-up finish will be scant consolation, and handing the title to their rivals in front of their own fans would be unforgivable.

It is not only Inter’s stunning season that will give Milanisti restless nights leading up to Monday’s showdown. This fixture has been a disaster for them of late, with Inter winning each of the last five meetings by an aggregate score of 12-1, including both legs of last season’s Champions League semi-final.

The 5-1 thumping they suffered back in September was the heaviest defeat in the fixture since a 4-0 win for Inter in August 2009 and the first time a team had conceded at least five Milan Derby goals since Milan’s 6-0 victory in May 2001.

Revenge would be sweet, not only to right the wrongs of that awful night, but to deny their cross-city cousins the satisfaction of wrapping up this inevitable Scudetto behind enemy lines.

If Milan can rediscover their free-scoring swagger of March at the opportune moment, they will hope a dangerous attack of Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud can have enough firepower to cause problems for an Inter side that has shown a few rare signs of frailty recently.

Before their devastating Champions League last 16 penalty shoot-out defeat to Atletico Madrid, Inter had won 13 games in a row. Since then, it is two wins and two draws – most recently at home to a Cagliari side fighting relegation. There is a sliver of hope for the red and blue side of the city to take from that.

For Milan, it is bad enough to know that an open-top bus parade through the city has already been planned for Tuesday.

It will not be long before the celebrations begin – but Pioli will hope for his own future and the pride of his supporters that they can at least be delayed a little longer.

Casemiro leads 10-man group set to leave Manchester United – Paper Round

Man Utd set for 10-player clearout

Manchester United could see 10 players leave in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Erik ten Hag may not be in charge of the club next season, but he may not be the only departure.

The paper explains: “Whatever fate awaits Erik ten Hag this summer, the number of Manchester United stars making an Old Trafford exit could hit double figures as new co-owners Ineos ring the changes.

“Anthony Martial will leave as a free agent and he could be followed by Raphael Varane and Brandon Williams when their contracts run out in June. United must also decide whether to offer Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton extensions.

“It is anticipated that Sofyan Amrabat will be allowed to return to Fiorentina when his loan expires, with United unlikely to take up an option to sign the Moroccan for £21.4million.

“Industry sources have told Confidential that Casemiro, Antony, Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are among those who could be sold, although there’s an understanding that it won’t be practical to offload too many at one time.

“There are also six players out on loan and Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellistri, Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez could all make permanent moves.”

Milan keen on Amrabat

As one of the expected Old Trafford departures, Sofyan Amrabat is unlikely to go back to Fiorentina after burning his bridges to force a move.

The Sun believes that AC Milan are a team who could offer him the chance to return to Serie A.

“Sofyan Amrabat’s Manchester United career looks to be coming to a close,” the paper reports.

“Amrabat signed for United following a protracted transfer saga that started before last season had even ended.

“The current front runners for his signature this summer are AC Milan.

“Amrabat has played 23 times for Manchester United, starting in just 24 per cent of those games.

“It’s unlikely that Amrabat would have a future at Fiorentina – having gone on strike to force a move to United.”

Van de Beek will not stay at Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt will not move to make Donny van de Beek’s transfer permanent, according to the Mirror.

The Dutchman has not done enough to interest the team in exercising their option to buy him.

The paper explains: “Donny van de Beek will be returning to Manchester United after his nightmare Eintracht Frankfurt spell.

“The Dutch midfielder joined the Bundesliga side on a loan deal until the end of the campaign in January. There was a £9million option to buy inserted in the deal that took Van de Beek to Germany.

“As it stands, it looks like that won’t be activated by Frankfurt.

“The German side have already decided not to sign him on a permanent deal.

“That call is just the latest in a long line of embarrassing moments for Van de Beek in Germany. The midfielder, still just 26, has made just seven appearances for the club this term – four of which have been starts.”

Wrexham want Okonkwo on permanent deal

Wrexham hope to sign Arthur Okonkwo on a permanent deal from Arsenal, the Independent writes.

He is on loan at the Welsh club already and now the side need to prepare for League One.

The paper states: “Okonkwo produced a series of standout performances across the campaign to help the Welsh club earn promotion from League Two.

“With co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney now setting their sights on improving Phil Parkinson’s squad to allow Wrexham to compete in the third tier, securing the 22-year-old permanently is said to be an option.”

Okafor scores late to rescue point for Milan at Sassuolo

Inter Milan are one step closer to their first Serie A title in three years after relegation threatened Sassuolo held their nearest rivals AC Milan to an incredibly entertaining Sunday afternoon 3-3 draw at the sun kissed Mapei Stadium.

Having gone two goals clear inside the first ten minutes through Pinamonti and Lauriente and through heroics of their veteran keeper Andrea Consigli, Sassuolo can count themselves unlucky not to have gone onto win the game.

But this result puts the hosts further away from relegation and cements their position within the Serie A table.

As for AC Milan, they had to come from behind twice but couldn’t find a winner in the final minutes in a result that leads their archrivals Inter Milan closer to another Serie A title. It was clear that AC Milan were struggling to come to terms with the uncommon high temperatures experienced at the ground. But after the chaotic first ten minutes, Milan began to settle into the game and were clearly more comfortable in possession.

For them, focus now shifts to their Europa League second leg clash against Roma on Thursday night in what is now clearly looking like their final chance of silverware this season.

Talking Point – Inter Milan getting closer to first Serie A title in three years after rivals slip up

This draw today compiles more pressure on Stefano Pioli after a first leg defeat to Roma mid-week and now a surprising draw against relegation threatened Sassuolo. If results play out in a certain way, Inter Milan have a chance to win the title next weekend against their arch-rivals AC in the eagerly anticipated Milan derby, a game you can watch on TNT Sports.

Player of the Match – Armand Lauriente

With explosive pace and superb finishing, Armand Lauriente deserves all the plaudits he receives after today’s game. Scoring a brace displayed his ability to finish expertly in high-octane games and that he is one of the most important players on the Sassuolo team. This is good news for Sassuolo who need him firing on all cylinders if they are to avoid relegation going into the final games of the season.
