Mighty Milan stars again to net hat-trick of wins

It’s going to take more than crosswinds and the kitchen sink to deny Jonathan Milan on this Giro d’Italia. Despite being caught out by a huge split in the peloton with 60km remaining of Stage 13, the Italian’s Lidl-Trek team kept their cool before delivering their man to a third sprint win while all Milan’s rivals faded.

Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) and Australians Kaden Grove (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla) were not even in the top 10 despite their teams piling on the hurt when Lidl-Trek were caught short in the wind.

Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) launched too early and allowed Milan to use his slipstream before powering to the line ahead of Poland’s Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis) and Germany’s Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious). Dutchman Tim Van Dijk (Visma-Lease a Bike) and France’s Hugo Hofstetter (Israel-Premier Tech) completed the top five.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) negotiated the crosswind chaos without any worry and finished safely in the pack to retain the pink jersey ahead of Saturday’s individual time trial and Sunday’s key summit finish, where the Slovenian will look to put to bed a race that he already leads by almost two minutes on his nearest challenger.

But the day was less about pink than the ciclamino skinsuit of Milan, who moved to over 100 points clear in the standings of the jersey he won on his Grand Tour debut at last year’s Giro.

Man Utd target Olise as Bayern consider Fernandes swoop – Paper Round

Crystal Palace could lose four stars

Manchester United want Michael Olise, Bayern Munich want Adam Wharton, Tottenham are keen on Eberechi Eze and Paris Saint-Germain could sign Jean-Phillipe Mateta, The Sun believes.

The Crystal Palace quartet have all impressed this season and attracted plenty of interest.

The paper states: “Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing Jean-Philippe Mateta – as Crystal Palace brace themselves for losing up to FOUR key players this summer.

“SunSport can reveal the French giants have joined a list of top suitors for striker Mateta.

“As well as Mateta, playmaker Adam Wharton, winger Michael Olise and attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze are being chased by a string of major clubs.

“Bayern Munich are keen on £60 million-rated ex-Blackburn star Wharton, 21.

“Manchester United are believed to be at the front of the queue for Olise, having put the French flyer top of their summer wish-list.

“Eze is admired by Tottenham as well as teams in Spain, Germany and Italy.”

Tuchel wants Fernandes

The Mirror reports that Bayern Munich may make an attempt to sign Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United.

The Portuguese is a transfer target for the Germans as they look to convince Thomas Tuchel to say.

The paper explains: “Thomas Tuchel wants Bayern Munich to try and sign Bruno Fernandes from Manchester United if he is going to perform a U-turn and commit his future to the German club.

“Tuchel announced back in February that he would be stepping down as Bayern head coach at the end of the season after pressure had grown on the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss. Since then, Bayern have been working around the clock to try and find a successor.

“Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick are among those that have been linked with the vacancy, but Bayern have struggled to find the perfect replacement. That has triggered rumours that Tuchel could decide to stay and continue his role ahead of the new season.”

Barca keen on Toone swoop

Barcelona could have an expensive summer, as they look to keep Lucy Bronze and Alexia Putellas, while also landing Ella Toone.

The Manchester United forward could be subject of a big-money move, according to the Daily Mail.

The paper reports: “Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester United and England star Ella Toone this summer.

“Toone, who is United’s all-time leading goalscorer and record appearance holder, has caught the eye of the Catalans – who already have a number of English players in their ranks.

“Mail Sport understands that no formal approach has been made yet, but Barca are weighing up making a move for the forward at the end of the season.

“Toone, 24, is under contract until 2026 meaning Barca would need to pay a significant fee to prise her away from United.

“Barca will also need to consider whether they can make the move work given they are set to renew Alexia Putellas’ contract and are in the process of negotiating with England defender Lucy Bronze over a new deal.”

Fernandes may be one of many to leave

The Independent believes that Bruno Fernandes could be one of several players to leave Manchester United.

As well as their captain, a number of players are up for sale if the right offer comes in.

The paper says of Fernandes that, “He is a sellable asset, surrounded by the overpaid and the underachieving, the injured and the declining. They are the players United would probably rather lose, the men who may have feared for their futures as they walked around the pitch.

“There is Christian Eriksen, who has lost his place and looks past his best; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, another out of contract in 2025 and a right-back who has lost his battle with Diogo Dalot and is only playing due to a lack of fit left-backs; Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, who the club were willing to sell last year, who have showed spirit to revive their United careers but who have evidence they may cash in on them if offers arrive; Jonny Evans, who has been valiant when given an unexpected second chance but who is 36 and only has a few weeks left on his deal.”

Barca win at Almeria to tighten grip on second place in La Liga

Barcelona tightened their grip on second place in La Liga with a routine 2-0 victory over bottom side Almeria.

Fermin Lopez scored both goals at the Power Horse Stadium as Xavi’s side moved four points clear of third-place Girona in the table with two games remaining.

The visitors broke through in the 14th minute when an unmarked Fermin neatly nodded home Hector Fort’s deep cross at the far post.

Almeria squandered two great opportunities to equalise in each half, with Leo Baptistao and Anthony Lozano both shooting wide with only Marc-Andre ter Stegen to beat, while Adri Embarba also hit a post for the hosts.

It proved costly as Barca doubled their advantage in the 67th minute with Sergi providing the cross for Fermin to brilliantly sweep a first-time shot into the far corner.

Substitute Joao Felix hit the side-netting late on, but Fermin’s brace was more than enough to seal the points for the visitors.

Talking Point – Routine for Barca, but Almeria rue wastefulness

Despite their recent troubles on the road, it seemed highly unlikely Barca would suffer a third successive away defeat in La Liga for the first time since December 2002 under Louis van Gaal.

Indeed, the Blaugrana continued their dominance of Almeria, who they have now beaten in 13 of the last 16 meetings between the sides.

Although, the hosts may wonder what might have been, as their winless streak on home soil continues.

Baptistao and Lozano both had glaring opportunities to equalise at 1-0 behind, but shot wide with only Ter Stegen to beat with actions that generally sum up their disappointing season.

Player of the Match – Fermin Lopez

The young midfielder, who turned 21 last Saturday, enjoyed the ideal late present, with his brace moving Barca four points clear of Girona in second place.

For both his goals, Fermin was in the right place at the right time. First, he arrived late at the far post to head home Fort’s deep cross, before brilliantly guiding Sergi’s centre into Maximiano’s left corner to seal the points.

Those strikes came from a game-high four shots, while he also created the joint-most chances with three (tying with Kounde and Yamal).

Player Ratings

Almeria: Maximiano 6, Pubill 6, Montes 6, Chumi 6, Langa 6, Viera 6, M. Pena 6, Robertone 6, Baptistao 5, Lozano 4, Embarba 7. Subs: Romero 5, Suarez 5, Melero 5, Centelles 5, Pozo 5.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen 7, Kounde 7, Cubarsi 7, I. Martinez 7, Fort 8, Pedri 7, Sergi 8, Fermin 9*, Yamal 8, Lewandowski 6, Ferran. Subs: Joao Felix 6, Christensen 6, Roque 5, Cancelo 5, Romeu 5.

Match Highlights

14′ – GOAL!!! ALMERIA 0-1 BARCELONA (FERMIN): Barca strike first at the Power Horse Stadium! Advancing from left-back, Fort has time to cut inside and delivers a deep cross to the far post, where an unmarked Fermin heads past a helpless Maximiano.

22′ – WHAT A CHANCE: The anticipation among the home fans rises as Baptistao manages to race in behind the Barca defence. However, with only Ter Stegen to beat, he gets his shot all wrong and sends it wide of the target.

42′ – OFF THE POST: The woodwork comes to Barca’s rescue as Embarba races onto a throughball, only to see his shot bounce back off Ter Stegen’s right post.

47′ – WHAT A MISS: Yet again, Almeria squander a great opportunity to equalise. Embarba’s attempted throughball ricochets kindly for Lozano, who has just Ter Stegen to beat, but only succeeds in slotting wide of the target.

67′ – GOAL!!! ALMERIA 0-2 BARCELONA (FERMIN): It’s that man again! Fermin doubles Barca’s lead! The midfielder arrives late in the box to meet Sergi’s cross, and brilliantly guides it away from Maximiano and into the far corner.

80′ – SIDE NETTING: Barca push for the third goal and Joao Felix is well found in the box. The substitute does well to cut inside and get a shot away, but it flashes the wrong side of the post.

‘Well capable of being the first’ – Wilson vows to end snooker’s ‘Crucible Curse’

Kyren Wilson is aiming to become the first snooker player in Crucible history to successfully defend the World Snooker Championship title after their maiden title triumph at the sport’s flagship tournament – ending the infamous 48-year-old ‘Crucible Curse’.

Luca Brecel became the latest figure to attempt and fail to land the historic double last month as he lost 10-9 to David Gilbert in the first round a year after winning his first world title with an 18-15 victory over Mark Selby in the final.

Steve Davis (1982), Stephen Hendry (1991), John Higgins (1999), Mark Williams (2001), Ronnie O’Sullivan (2002), Mark Selby (2015) and Judd Trump (2020) are just a few of the celebrated names to fail in their bid to win back-to-back titles a year after lifting the trophy for the first tiime.

In fact, the closest any player came to pulling off the feat since the Crucible first staged the competition in 1977 is Eurosport pundit Joe Johnson, the popular Bradford player who claimed the title as a 150-1 outsider in 1986, and Dublin’s evergreen Ken Doherty, the 1997 winner.

Johnson completed a stunning 18-12 upset win over Steve Davis and returned to the showpiece match a year later, but this time was denied by Davis 18-14, while Doherty defeated Hendry 18-12 for his maiden victory, but then lost 18-12 to John Higgins in 1998.

‘I’ll never forget this moment’ – Wilson reflects on glory at Crucible

“We said we feel we’re in a good position and well capable of being the first one to stop that Crucible Curse.

“I feel I’m quite well-equipped to handle it. I don’t feel like I’m a flash in the pan.

“I’m quite level-headed. I feel I have all the assets to handle any situation. I feel I can give it a good shot.”

Wilson is due to play his first competitive match as world champion when he faces Ryan Day at the Helsinki International Snooker Cup on Saturday, May 25, with Brecel, Stuart Bingham, Trump, Robert Milkins, Jimmy White and Jack Lisowski also competing in the Finnish capital.
