Wer spielt gegen wen?

Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr line up bid for Man Utd captain Fernandes – Paper Round

Al-Nassr set to bid for Fernandes

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is a target for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Arabian side, Al-Nassr.

The midfielder has suggested he could be tempted to leave, and United are known to be open to selling players this summer.

The Daily Star reports: “Cristiano Ronaldo wants Bruno Fernandes to leave Manchester United and join him in the Saudi Pro League next season.

“Fernandes has emerged as the No.1 target of Ronaldo’s club Al-Nassr. The Saudi outfit are willing to break the bank to lure Fernandes – with Ronaldo urging them to land the Portuguese midfielder.

“United captain Fernandes has become disillusioned at Old Trafford, and held a meeting with club bosses last week to discuss his future and the club’s ambitions going forward. Fernandes is said to have sought assurances from new United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his football leadership team about their vision for the club in the coming years.

“The mega-rich Saudi club are looking to strengthen their squad in a number of positions, including signing an attacking midfielder – with Fernandes their first-choice. Al-Nassr are expected to test United’s resolve with a lucrative bid this summer.”

United contact two managers

The Mirror reports that Manchester United have already made contact with two managers over potentially replacing Erik ten Hag.

While no decision has been taken over replacing the Dutchman yet, both Gareth Southgate and Kieran McKenna could be under consideration should he depart.

The paper explains: “Sir Jim Ratcliffe has sounded out Kieran McKenna and Gareth Southgate among five candidates to replace Erik ten Hag.

“The Dutchman has endured an awful second season in the Old Trafford hotseat. The Red Devils see their European hopes in severe jeopardy after losing 14 of their 36 games so far.

“That form has seen Ten Hag’s long-term future called into question, particularly with a year left on his contract.

“Some well-established names have already been linked with a summer switch, while current Premier League bosses are among Ratcliffe’s thinking.”

Tuchel wants United job offer

Bayern Munich hope to keep Thomas Tuchel for the next season, but the German hopes to be offered the Manchester United job.

The Telegraph claims that Bayern might need Tuchel to stay despite announcing their intention for him to leave this summer.

The paper states: “Thomas Tuchel is hoping for an offer from Manchester United should Erik ten Hag leave Old Trafford, although Bayern Munich are attempting to talk him into remaining as their head coach.

“Talks have taken place to ascertain whether Tuchel might stay with Bayern who have been left embarrassed after being turned down by a number of their targets.

“If Tuchel does agree to carry on at Bayern he will ask for certain conditions to be met including more control on transfers and a contract extension beyond next year.

“There is no suggestion that United have made any contact with Tuchel or his representatives. United had not made any decision on Ten Hag’s future ahead of their final home game of the season against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.”

Mourinho targeted for Saudi switch

The Daily Mail believes that Jose Mourinho could be set for a move to Al-Qadsiah

The Saudi outfit are contemplating a managerial change and Mourinho is out of work after leaving Roma earlier this season.

The paper writes: “Jose Mourinho has emerged as a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah.

“The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is ready to return to management after being sacked by Roma earlier this season.

“Al-Qadsiah, who got off to a bright start this season under the management of ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, were promoted from the Saudi First Division last week and are now coached by former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder Michel.

“However, they are understood to be contemplating a change and 61-year old Mourinho is a candidate.

“Mourinho has been courted before by the Saudi Arabian Pro League with Al Shabab among those to make an approach and though he has rejected previous advances he has admitted he is open to managing there with the right project.”

Champions PSG secure narrow win as Nice denied Champions League berth

Paris Saint-Germain overcame Kylian Mbappe’s absence as they beat 10-man Nice 2-1 to close in on a Ligue 1 record.

The imminently departing Mbappe was absent through injury on Wednesday at Allianz Riviera, but PSG got the job done thanks to quick-fire first-half goals from Bradley Barcola and birthday boy Yoram Zague.

Nice had hit the post through Khephren Thuram early on, and they dragged themselves back into the contest when Mohamed-Ali Cho slammed home in the 32nd minute.

Jeremie Boga, Terem Moffi and substitute Gaetan Laborde went close to an equaliser, but Nice’s hopes of restoring parity took a blow when Melvin Bard saw red in the 75th minute.

Barcola struck the woodwork with a golden opportunity soon after, though champions PSG were not made to pay for that miss, and should they avoid defeat against Metz on Sunday, will become the first team in Ligue 1 history to go an entire campaign unbeaten on the road.

Thuram should have made PSG pay for some slack play in the fifth minute, only to hit the left-hand upright when one-on-one with Arnau Tenas.

Nice were left to lament that miss when Barcola steered home in the 18th minute after pouncing on Jordan Lotomba’s error and exchanging passes with Fabian Ruiz.

Barcola had Lotomba’s number again five minutes later, skipping beyond the full-back and cutting back for the onrushing Zague to tuck home to mark his 18th birthday in style.

Yet Nice were right back in when Boga brilliantly teed up Cho, whose strike could only be helped in by Tenas.

PSG were fortunate to go into half-time with their lead intact – Tenas denying Boga from close range before Marquinhos diverted Moffi’s goalbound effort wide.

Tenas’ sloppiness in possession might have cost PSG midway through the second half, yet Laborde let him off with a tame finish.

And Nice’s chances were dented soon after – Barcola drawing a rash foul from Bard, who was sent straight off by referee Ruddy Buquet, whose decision stood after a VAR check.

Barcola should have made sure of the points when he hit the post with the goal gaping, but PSG held firm as Nice’s slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dashed.

Talking Point – Life after Mbappe

With Mbappe heading for pastures new after the conclusion of this campaign, this was a taste of what is to come for PSG, and Luis Enrique will certainly be wanting reinforcements in the transfer window.

While Barcola filled in admirably for Mbappe down the left, PSG will need more quality across the pitch if they are to try and keep pace with Europe’s elite without the talismanic Mbappe.

Player of the Match – Bradley Barcola (PSG)

PSG certainly need to bring in some form of replacement for Mbappe, but in Barcola, they do have a fine young talent on their hands.

The 21-year-old was a constant menace to Nice’s defence, and his dazzling footwork and perfect pass for PSG’s second goal matched his clinical finish for their opener. He has now provided seven assists and scored four goals in Ligue 1 this season.

Player Ratings

Nice: Bulka 6, Lotomba 5, Todibo 6, Dante 7, Bard 6, Sanson 6, Rosario 6, Thuram 6, Cho 7, Moffi 7, Boga 7. Subs: Boudaoui 6, Laborde 6, Mendy 6, Perraud 6, Guessand 6.

PSG: Tenas 6, Zague 7, Marquinhos 6, Skriniar 6, Beraldo 6, Zaire-Emery 7, Vitinha 7, Fabian Ruiz 7, Lee 6, Ramos 5, Barcola 8*. Subs: Asensio 6, Mayulu 6, Soler 6.

Match Highlights

5’ – CHANCE! Nice 0-0 PSG (Thuram): How has that not gone in?! A bad mistake from PSG as they look to play out from the back allows Thuram, who could be set to play at Euro 2024 for France, pounce. He takes a quick snapshot, and it beats Tenas but then rattles back off the right-hand upright. Could he have picked his spot there? It’s a big let off for the visitors!

18’ – GOAL!!! NICE 0-1 PSG (Barcola): Mbappe-esque! PSG take the lead out of nowhere! A slack bit of play from Lotomba proves costly as the full-back’s heavy touch is pounced on by Barcola, who exchanges passes with Fabian Ruiz before setting himself and ripping a brilliant finish into the right-hand corner. It’s 1-0 to the visitors!

23’ – GOAL!!! Nice 0-2 PSG (Zague): It’s 2-0, and what an assist from Barcola! The youngster is on fire here, as he skips easily beyond Lotomba and drills a cutback into the six-yard box, where full-back Zague is on hand to tuck home his first PSG goal. What a moment for the teenager, and more excellent from Barcola. Luis Enrique’s team are well on their way to victory now.

32’ – GOAL!!! Nice 1-2 PSG (Cho): Nice pull one back! Boga does brilliantly to charge into PSG’s area and evade a glut of defenders before laying it off for Cho, who sweeps home with aplomb! Tenas got a hand to it, but could only help it in. It’s game on!

75’ – RED CARD!!! BARD IS SENT OFF! Could that be game over? Nice had been applying the pressure but, from a corner, PSG break through Barcola. Bard charges across and takes the winger out, and the referee reaches for a red card! It seems harsh – will VAR hand him a reprieve?

79’ – CHANCE! Nice 1-2 PSG (Barcola): That should have been 3-1! A cross from the right found its way through to Barcola, but with the goal gaping, he could only cushion a volley against the woodwork. He’s had a great night, but that was a bad miss! Will PSG live to regret it?

Early Vlahovic goal gives Juventus record 15th Coppa Italia trophy

Dusan Vlahovic’s early goal proved enough to clinch Coppa Italia glory for Juventus as a 1-0 victory in Rome extended Gian Piero Gasperini’s wait for his first Atalanta trophy.

Juventus led inside just four minutes, Vlahovic showing strength and composure to hold off Isak Hien and finish after racing onto an Andrea Cambiaso through ball.

The Bianconeri defence held firm as Atalanta struggled to muster a response in the absence of suspended top scorer Gianluca Scamacca.

Both sides were denied by the woodwork late on, Ademola Lookman thumping the post and Fabio Miretti striking the bar, while Vlahovic had a second goal disallowed for the tightest of offsides as Juve claimed a deserved victory.

It offered a bright ending to an otherwise disappointing season and potentially the last trophy for Massimiliano Allegri, and the Bianconeri coach went out with a bang as he reacted to a stoppage-time red card by furiously ripping off his jacket and tie.

Juve extended their record Coppa Italia haul to 15 trophies, while Atalanta’s wait for their first since 1963 goes on and Gasperini will hope that the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen can finally deliver him a career-first trophy.

Diallo scores first league goal as Man Utd beat Newcastle to end losing run

Manchester United had their young stars to thank as they recorded a hard-fought 3-2 win over Newcastle United that takes the race for European football to the final day.

In a high-octane encounter where both sides threw caution to the wind, it was the home side who took the lead thanks to Kobbie Mainoo just after the half-hour, after Diallo darted infield looking to link with Bruno Fernandes.

The pass instead found Mainoo, unmarked and onside, in plenty of space, and the teenager stroked home into the corner.

Casemiro cleared a Dan Burn header off the line six minutes later as Newcastle threatened, and Eddie Howe’s Magpies started the second half the stronger, deservedly equalising through Anthony Gordon four minutes in.

A sloppy touch from Sofyan Amrabat was seized upon by Alexander Isak, who fed Jacob Murphy down the right. His cross was delivered perfectly for Gordon to tap home at the back post.

However, United were ahead again eight minutes later as a Fernandes corner was cleared by Murphy, but only into the path of Diallo, who lurked ominously on the edge of the area. The Ivorian struck powerfully, lashing home his first Premier League goal.

Rasmus Hojlund, dropped to the bench for this game, made an instant impact when called upon, taking just 104 seconds to score the third as he held off the attentions of Burn to arrow home with his right foot.

Lewis Hall’s sumptuous stunner in the second minute of stoppage time set up a nervy finish, but United held on to give under-fire Erik ten Hag a big three points and build momentum for a season-defining FA Cup final.

Talking point – You can win things with kids

United’s future generation were their match-winners this evening, with all three of their goal scorers 21 years old or younger.

Ten Hag could have made the easy decision to play Hojlund – his only recognised striker – again despite the Dane’s obvious fatigue levels, and he could have fast-tracked the returning yet out-of-form Marcus Rashford back into the starting fray.

But no, he made just the one change to the side that fell 1-0 to Arsenal at the weekend, Hojlund dropping to the bench, and Fernandes as a free-roaming false nine.

It worked a charm, as Fernandes’ movement was a constant thorn in the side of the Newcastle backline, while Diallo was bright down the right against Hall, who has struggled for match fitness since his arrival from Chelsea.

Mainoo showed great composure with his opener and in midfield once more, and the debate will roar on as to whether he makes Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Player of the match – Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United

It seemed that with the security of Scott McTominay behind him – or alongside him in the first phase of the press – the Portuguese was liberated somewhat.

That ultimately meant that he could deliver his sparkling best, which he duly did, demonstrated by a plethora of delicious deliveries and intricate interplay.

He ran the show from false nine, and will have to play the talismanic figure once more if United are to trouble the European places.

Player ratings

Man Utd: Onana 7, Wan-Bissaka 6, Casemiro 7, Evans 6, Dalot 6, Amrabat 7, Mainoo 7, Diallo 7, McTominay 6, Garnacho 6, Fernandes 8. Subs: Hojund 7, Rashford 6, Martinez 6, Eriksen 6.

Match highlights

31′: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED (MAINOO) United are in front, and it’s their young midfield starlet who puts them in front. Amrabat finds Diallo to his right, and the Ivorian darts inside and looks to intricately link up with Fernandes. The ball evades the Portuguese but finds Mainoo in acres of space in the box. The flag stays down as the rusty Trippier keeps him onside, and he slots it away!

37′: NO GOAL! Murphy stands a cross up to the far post, and Burn towers at the far post to win the header, but it’s Casemiro hooking it clear off the line!

50′: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED (GORDON) But he scores this time! Newcastle are level, and it’s Anthony Gordon who’s got it. Amrabat miscontrols the pass and Isak seizes upon it, playing Murphy in down the right. His cross is perfectly weighted for Gordon to tap home at the far post.

58′: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED (DIALLO) Oh, what a goal! The delivery evades everybody in the middle, and he’s been free on the edge of the area all night, has Amad Diallo. Fernandes’ corner is nodded away by Murphy, but it diverts into the path of the Ivorian, who lashes it beyond Dubravka to record his first Premier League goal.

84′: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED (HOJLUND) That’s what he does, and that’s what they can do. Rasmus Hojlund has an instant impact, and shows just what he’s capable of. United have been lacking his presence up top, and he takes the ball confidently on the edge of the area, before holding off Dan Burn, who tugs at him. He works an inch of space to strike with his right, and it arrows into the far corner for his ninth of the campaign.

90+2′: GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 3-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED (HALL) What a goal! Lewis Hall curls an absolute beauty from the edge of the area into the far corner following the clearance of a corner. A grand stand finish here!
