Jets news: Aaron Rodgers’ Week 4 plan will light fire under Zach Wilson vs Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season was originally expected to feature a heavyweight quarterback duel between New York Jets star Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. Instead, the glitter of this Chiefs-Jets matchup has greatly decreased, with Rodgers out with an injury, leaving New York to rely on Zach Wilson for their needs under center. It’s not ideal for the Jets, but they are sticking with Wilson, who could use some support from Rodgers.

Rodgers is expected to be in attendance to watch the Jets take on the reigning Super Bowl champions, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Hopefully for Wilson and the Jets, Rodgers’ presence at MetLife Stadium on Sunday will light a fire under the young QB, as New York looks to prevent a three-game losing skid.

Sources: Aaron Rodgers is currently in the #Jets’ facility and will attend Sunday Night Football against the #Chiefs, after being cleared by his doctor. I’m told Rodgers just attended the team meeting and spoke to his teammates. Good boost for Zach Wilson to have Rodgers there supporting him.

The Jets scored a shock 22-16 overtime win in Week 1 over the Buffalo Bills, the same in which Aaron Rodgers suffered the season-ending Achilles rupture injury, then suffered back-to-back losses to the Dallas Cowboys and to the New England Patriots in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively.

Wilson hasn’t been effective as the starter for the Jets. In three appearances this season, he has passed for 467 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions, while completing only 52.4 percent of his passes. It might not be long before Wilson gets replaced as the starter for the Jets, but a strong performance against the Chiefs could turn things around for the former No. 2 overall pick.

Chiefs vs. Jets prediction, odds, pick, how to watch NFL Week 4 game

The Kansas City Chiefs will head to East Rutherford, New Jersey to take on the New York Jets at the Meadowlands. We’re here to share our NFL odds series, make a Chiefs-Jets prediction, and pick while showing you how to watch.

The Chiefs destroyed the Chicago Bears 41-10 in Week 3. Amazingly, they jumped out to a 34-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Patrick Mahomes went 24 for  33 with 272 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing three times for 28 yards. Meanwhile, Isiah Pacheco rushed 15 times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Clyde Edwards-Helaire added 15 rushes for 55 yards and a score. Likewise, Travis Kelce added seven catches for 69 yards. Rashee Rice added five receptions for 59 yards.

The Chiefs went 10 for 14 on third down. Furthermore, the defense had three sacks and forced two turnovers as they rattled Justin Fields all day while preventing the Bears from doing anything.

The Jets lost 15-10 to the New England Patriots. Sadly, it was not their day against the Pats. Zach Wilson had another poor performance, going 18 for 36 with 157 yards passing, but he also took three sacks. Also, Dalvin Cook struggled by rushing eight times for 18 yards. Breece Hall added 12 rushes for 18 yards. Meanwhile, Garrett Wilson had five receptions on nine targets for 48 yards.

The defense did okay against the Patriots. Yet, they also did not garner a sack or force a turnover. The defense will have a much tougher task facing Mahomes this Sunday night against a packed house at the Meadowlands.

The Chiefs lead the all-time series 20-19-1. Ultimately, the Chiefs dominated the Jets 35-9 in the last battle.

Why The Chiefs Could Cover The Spread

The Chiefs are 2-1 as their offense is gelling, and the defense is playing well. Ultimately, there is one man at the center of it all, and he continues to move the offense efficiently to this day.

Mahomes has passed for 803 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions while rushing 16 times for 103 yards. Meanwhile, Pacheco has rushed 35 times for 155 yards and a touchdown while also catching seven passes for  47 yards. Edwards-Helaire has rushed 22 times for 77 yards and a score. Additionally, Justin Watson has caught seven passes for 158 yards, while Skyy Moore has seven receptions for 112 yards and a score. Rice has 10 receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Kelce has 11 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The defense has been good since Week 2, as Chris Jones has two solo tackles and 2.5 sacks through two games. Meanwhile, Mike Edwards has added three solo tackles and an interception. Mike Danna has added seven solo tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Chiefs will cover the spread if they can put points in bunches. Then, the defense must rattle the Jets and force them to pass.

Why The Jets Could Cover The Spread

When the NFL schedule makers created this game for Sunday Night Football, they envisioned a showdown between Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. Unfortunately, Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in the opening weekend. The Jets must rely on Wilson.

Wilson has 467 yards passing with two touchdowns, four interceptions, and an ugly 52.4 completion percentage. However, he has some help on this team.  Hall has 26 rushes for 154 yards, while Cook has rushed 25 times for 58 yards with seven catches and 42 yards. Currently, The receiver Wilson has 12 catches for 165 yards and two scores, while Allen Lazard has seven receptions for 108 yards.

The defense remains a strength. Ultimately, Quinton Jefferson has three solo tackles and two sacks. Solomon Thomas has five solo tackles and one sack. Likewise, Jermaine Johnson has 10 solo tackles and one sack, while Jordan Whitehead has added 17 solo tackles and three interceptions. The defense must play its best game possible to have a chance at defeating Mahomes.

The Jets will cover the spread if the offense can deliver long, sustained drives. Furthermore, they need good quarterback play from Wilson, as he must avoid turnovers. Good drives on offense will keep the defense fresh.

Final Chiefs-Jets Prediction & Pick

The Jets are not a great team without Rodgers. regardless, they still have a great defense and can put up a fight. The Chiefs likely win this game. However, it will not be the blowout many believe it will be. The Jets will come out fired up on Sunday Night Football to give the Chiefs a good game.

Final Chiefs-Jets Prediction & Pick: New York Jets: +8.5 (-110)

NFL makes decision on Mac Jones punishment for Sauce Gardner nut shot

Following the New England Patriots 15-10 win over the New York Jets Sunday, Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner accused Patriots quarterback Mac Jones of hitting him in his “private parts” during the game. Gardner was upset at the “dirty play” and shoved Jones away after the alleged incident.

Gardner posted a video of the incident to social media to make his case. He also said, “[Jones] got tackled. He reached out to me to get me to help him up. I just moved his hand out of the way. He got up and then came up to me like ‘Good job.’ While he was saying that, he hit me in my private parts. I didn’t react like I really wanted to. I definitely wasn’t expecting that. First time for everything I guess,” via Chris Mason of Mass Live.

Jones later denied Sauce Gardner’s accusation, saying “nothing was intentional.”

The NFL then looked into the video after Gardner’s claims. The NFL ruled that the video did not provide enough evidence of any wrongdoing, so Mac Jones will not be punished or fined, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

This is not the first time Mac Jones has been accused of such a shot or a dirty play in general. However, the NFL can’t issue a fine or any repercussions without substantial proof of wrongdoing.

The Patriots and Jets will next meet up at the end of the year on January 7th, and there very well could be some unresolved tension between the two division rivals.

Jets DE Jermaine Johnson’s eye-opening comments will catch Patrick Mahomes’ attention

The New York Jets have one sack and have been carved up by quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Mac Jones in the past two games. This week, they face the Kansas City Chiefs and their elite QB, Patrick Mahomes. But none of that diminishes the swagger of Jets edge rusher Jermaine Johnson.

When asked about facing Mahomes, the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Johnson had a confident reply. Via Paul Andrew Esden Jr:

“We got something for him. We got something for him,” Johnson stated.

Johnson best hope that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has an amazing game plan to contain Mahomes or else it could be a long night for the Jets on Sunday. Mahomes has thrown seven TDs and has a 99.5 passer rating through three games. He threw for more than 5,000 yards last season and is one TD pass shy of 200 in his NFL career.

Oh, and the elusive Mahomes has rushed for 103 yards on 16 carries this season (6.4 yards per rush).

Jermaine Johnson says no excuses for Jets, ‘make plays’

If you think Prescott and Jones unload the ball quickly, just wait to watch Mahomes, who processes things so fast that it leads to getting the ball out of his hand in no time, frustrating defenders along the way. And the Jets defense certainly was frustrated by Prescott and Jones in consecutive losses the past two weeks.

“Yeah, they’ve been getting rid of it fast, but as we like to say in our room, playmakers make big plays no matter what,” Johnson explained. “Yeah, they’re going to get the ball out fast, they going to get (maximum protection) … at the end of the day, you’re either going to get sacks or not.

“Doesn’t matter. Make plays.”

The 2022 first-round pick is starting ahead of veteran Carl Lawson and has one sack, five QB pressures, and 10 tackles in the first three games.

Make no mistake, Johnson and the Jets (1-2) need to make a lot of big plays in order to hang with the Chiefs (2-1) this week.

Jets CB Sauce Gardner send stern warning to Travis Kelce ahead of Week 4 showdown with Chiefs

The New York Jets may be in a bit of a crisis, particularly on the offensive end of the field, but that doesn’t seem to have sapped the confidence of their defensive personnel for at least a bit. This is evident in cornerback Sauce Gardner’s proclamations in the lead-up to the Jets’ Week 4 clash against the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, even though a matchup against tight end Travis Kelce will have any defender’s hands full.

Speaking to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, Gardner expressed his anticipation of what should be a matchup that tests his limits come Sunday against the Chiefs.

“I always want to go against the best, no matter what position it is. The best teams, the best receivers, the best tight ends. No matter who it is,” the Jets cornerback said.

That is the mindset of an elite player or at least someone who could work his way into superstar status someday. And Sauce Gardner is already one of the most exciting players at his position; he reads the routes of wideouts with a snap of a finger, and then he uses his overwhelming athleticism to crowd his matchup or his zone, depending on the coverage, making it an unwise decision to throw anything short of a bullet within his vicinity.

Now, Travis Kelce is a different beast as well, standing out as a stellar passing option for Patrick Mahomes due to his strength and assured hands. The Chiefs tight end will be a tough matchup for anyone, even for the Jets’ star cornerback, especially if he shows out once again given his new relationship status with pop icon Taylor Swift, who will, once more, be in attendance to cheer her new partner on.

Sauce Gardner, thus far this season, has tallied seven tackles, five assists, and one forced fumble; but for the Jets to stop a humming Chiefs offense coming off a 41-10 decimation of the Chicago Bears, Gardner may have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to prop up a Jets team that hasn’t quite gotten off the races yet in the aftermath of Aaron Rodgers’ injury.

Rob Gronkowski floats Kirk Cousins trade idea amid Vikings’ early struggles

Future NFL Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski believes Kirk Cousins is nearing the end of his time with the Minnesota Vikings. The 0-3 Vikings face the Carolina Panthers, who are also 0-3, on Sunday. Gronkowski says Minnesota should trade Cousins to the New York Jets if they lose to Carolina and drop to 0-4.

“If for some reason the Vikings lose, Kirk Cousins should be shipped out 100-percent. He should be shipped out to the New York Jets,” Gronkowski said. “And why I think that makes sense is because it’s the last year on his contract. Yes, you’re going to get Aaron Rodgers back next year with the Jets. But they need to fix that quarterback position this year if they want to win some games, and it makes sense with having his contract expire after this year. He needs to be shipped to the Jets. It will make them competitive. It will be fun to watch (them) again.”

The NFL trade deadline is about a month away, and the Vikings season is looking bleak despite high expectations. Minnesota was favored to win the NFC North, but it now looks like they won’t be contending for a playoff spot.

Despite losing the first three games, Cousins is actually off to a historic pace in terms of his passing totals. Through three games, he’s thrown for 1,075 yards and nine touchdowns, completing nearly 70% of his throws. Cousins is a solid quarterback, but the Vikings know his limitations. He may not be with the team next year, so maybe it makes sense to move off of him now and draft a quarterback in the spring.

Chiefs: 2 bold predictions for Week 4 game vs. Jets

The Kansas City Chiefs Week 4 game against the New York Jets was supposed to be an epic matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers on Sunday Night Football. Now that Zach Wilson is under center, the Chiefs-Jets game is expected to be a one-sided affair. Our Chiefs Week 4 predictions, however, suggest that the game could be more competitive than the betting odds might have observers believe.

It’s easy to see why the Chiefs are such heavy favorites in Week 4. Kansas City is still less than nine months removed from winning the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes remains the best quarterback in the NFL, on track to go down as one of the greatest players of all time. The Chicago Bears were reminded of those facts when they were embarrassed by the Chiefs 41-10 in Week 3.

The Chiefs-Jets game couldn’t come at a worse time for New York. The Jets are reeling are two straight losses, during each of which Rodgers’ presence was sorely missed. The 2023 season is going to quickly get away from the Jets if they aren’t careful. What New York needs is a matchup with a middling opponent, not a game against a team that’s made five straight AFC Championship Game appearances.

The Chiefs are 8.5-point road favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook. Kansas City has -420 odds to win straight up. The Jets have +330 odds to pull off the upset in front of Taylor Swift and close to 20 million television viewers.

Let’s make some bold Chiefs predictions for Week 4. Note that these are bold predictions. It’s unlikely that each prediction will prove to be correct, but they have a better chance of happening than what the odds indicate.

2. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will have fewer than 250 passing yards, and Kansas City will score fewer than three touchdowns

The Chiefs’ early-season struggles seemed to disappear with their dominant win over the Bears. The final score didn’t accurately reflect just how much Kansas City dominated the game. The Chiefs had 41 points with 22 minutes remaining and could’ve run up the score like the Miami Dolphins had done a few hours earlier in their 70-point performance.

The Jets are better than the Bears. The two defenses aren’t comparable. Chicago has a bottom-five defense by just about every metric. Only the Denver Broncos have given up more points per game than the Bears. New York’s defense is among the best in football. The secondary is the unit’s strength. Mac Jones had nowhere to go with the football on most of his attempts at MetLife Stadium last week. While the Bears rank dead last with one sack and nine quarterback hits, the Jets have a chance to at least put some pressure on Mahomes.

Kansas City scored 38 total points in the first two weeks, a reflection of the team’s wide receiving corps. The Chiefs dropped numerous passes in the season opener when Travis Kelce was sidelined with a knee injury. In Week 2, Kansas City was held to 17 points by a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that won’t be confused with an elite unit. Andy Reid and Mahomes will have the offense humming come playoff time like they always do. But there could be some speed bumps ahead, particularly when facing defenses like the Jets.

Mahomes has -225 odds at FanDuel to throw for at least 250 yards. The Chiefs have -196 odds to score at least three touchdowns.

1. The Chiefs and Jets will combine for fewer than 31.5 points

There’s little chance that the Jets will have some kind of offensive explosion in Week 4. Maybe Joe Namath shouldn’t have blasted Wilson publicly in the way that he did, but he wasn’t exactly wrong. Wilson isn’t good enough to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. His 467 passing yards, 52.4% completion rate and four interceptions this season are enough evidence to determine that the quarterback hasn’t improved in Year No. 3.

Wilson isn’t the only reason why the Jets’ offense has been one of the league’s worst. Fears about New York’s offensive line have been realized. Outside of Garrett Wilson, the Jets’ weapons aren’t as dangerous as the preseason hype would have you believe.

Kansas City’s defense was overlooked before the start of the 2023 season. The unit has given up no more than 14 points to the opposing offense in all three games. Considering New York hasn’t scored more than 16 points in regulation, Wilson and the Jets shouldn’t be the team that breaks Kansas City’s streak.

If the Chiefs aren’t going to score more than two touchdowns and the Jets’ offense is going to struggle, Sunday’s game won’t feature many total points. Under the alternate total of 31.5 in the Chiefs-Jets game has +340 odds at FanDuel.

The Jets’ defense could at least make things interesting in a relatively close Chiefs victory.

Jets: 4 bold predictions for Week 4 game vs. Chiefs

When the New York Jets host the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4 on Sunday night, there’s a good chance the MetLife Stadium crowd will be focused more on Taylor Swift cheering in a suite than rooting for the home team. That’s how grim the Jets situation is just three weeks into the 2023 season.

Originally, a primetime showdown between Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes seemed as sexy as it could get. But with Rodgers out for the season with an Achilles injury and the Jets unable to get out of their own way on offense, the only sex appeal Sunday centers on the pop star and her budding romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

A game will be played, however, and the Jets (1-2) face long odds at home against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (2-1).

Let’s examine 4 bold Jets predictions for their Week 4 game against the Chiefs.

Taylor Swift will receive more face time on TV broadcast than Robert Saleh

Typically, cameramen train their lenses during the TV broadcast on the coach reacting to the ups and downs of a game. And Jets coach Robert Saleh is a fun target because he’s an animated character, evidenced by his memorable reaction following Xavier Gipson’s game-winning touchdown on an overtime punt return in Week 1.

But with Taylor Swift in attendance Sunday, Saleh’s going to lose face time to the superstar singer, who sold out this same stadium for a concert this summer. Her over the top reactions were well documented last week when the Chiefs mauled the Chicago Bears. You can expect Swift to have more to celebrate than Saleh this week. And really, how many anguished shots of a pained Saleh does one broadcast need anyway?

The Jets defense will not be able to contain Travis Kelce

Staying on the Taylor Swift theme, her new beau is going to feast against the Jets. He’s a big-game player. And starring in a primetime game right outside the Big Apple with all the attention about his high-profile relationship, you just know Kelce will not disappoint.

Toss in that the Jets have really struggled with the dinks and dunks and medium-range throws from Dak Prescott and Mac Jones the past two weeks, and you can see how Mahomes will torch them connecting consistently with Kelce.

New York would be best served having Sauce Gardner travel with Kelce and cover him one-on-one; but that’s not how the Jets defend. They’ll stay in their zone coverage and Kelce will have a big day.

Eight catches and at least one touchdown, maybe two, sound about right for Kelce this week.

Jets defense will turn Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs over twice

Kelce’s expected big game aside, the Jets defense is still good. And they’re going to be fired up for this massive challenge. So, they will not be embarrassed.

Kansas City has turned the ball over six times so far this season and the Jets will come away with two turnovers, which will keep them in this game. Linebacker Quincy Williams has been terrific the first three weeks, so look for him to make a big play, either causing a fumble or recovering one. Gardner loves the spotlight and Mahomes won’t be afraid to challenge him. So, the time seems right for Sauce’s first interception of the season.

Jets will fall to Chiefs, extend losing streak to three games

This seemed like an awfully tough game to win for the Jets even if Rodgers was playing. Without him? Well, you’d be hard pressed to find someone picking the Jets to get the W.

It would be easy to say the Chiefs will win in a blowout. But that won’t happen. The Jets defense will be at their best, Zach Wilson won’t turn the ball over and Breece Hall will rush for 50 yards and a TD to keep it somewhat close.

The Jets lose their third straight, 27-13.

Aaron Rodgers’ replacement as Jets captain after injury, revealed

After his season-ending (maybe?) injury in Week 1, Aaron Rodgers was replaced as New York Jets starting quarterback by Zach Wilson. Now, three weeks later he has been replaced as one of New York’s team captains.

But Wilson, a captain last season, didn’t get this call.

Instead, coach Robert Saleh announced Friday that All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will join linebacker C.J. Mosley and special teams ace Justin Hardee as captain.

Saleh explained that Williams finished fourth in captain’s voting prior to the season opener and had a “significant” vote total. That was good enough for the coach to have him replace Rodgers, even though it means the Jets do not have a captain on offense.

“After just thinking about it, I was like, ‘Why not?’” Saleh said. “The guy’s such a vocal leader on this team. He says all the right things, he does all the right things. He stands for everything we believe in.”

Williams, a first-round pick by the Jets in 2019, had a breakout season in 2022. He had 12 sacks and was named First-Team All-Pro. The 25-year-old then landed a massive new contract this summer.

Though he doesn’t have a sack yet this season, Williams has 12 QB pressures and has been a force against the run and pass, often taking on double teams. Williams is extremely respected by his teammates on both sides of the ball.

The Jets do select a different player each week to be the fourth captain. Williams was the Week 1 selection, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Saleh chooses an offensive player regularly so that part of the team is represented each week. Young star Garrett Wilson would appear to be in line for that opportunity, as would veterans Tyler Conklin, Randall Cobb, Laken Tomlinson and Connor McGovern.

And if Wilson can straighten out his game, it would be a natural fit to have the QB be a captain, at least once.
