Italy among options for 2022 World Cup recall if Ecuador excluded

FIFA confirmed an investigation has been opened into falsification of documents that could cost Ecuador a place at the 2022 World Cup, as Peru and potentially even Italy wait for developments.

The Chilean Football Association lodged the complaint with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, alleging documents were falsified to give Byron David Castillo Segura Ecuadorian nationality.

Considering he took part in eight World Cup qualifying matches, it could see Ecuador thrown out of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

FIFA have now opened an investigation, suggesting there could be huge developments.

Ecuador were placed in a World Cup group with Qatar, the Netherlands and Senegal.

In theory, if Ecuador are excluded, Peru should be promoted directly into the tournament rather than go through the play-offs with Australia.

Chile could then go to the play-offs instead, but this opens up new problems, because Ecuador were a Pot 4 team in the draw and technically Peru would be Pot 3, so the entire draw might be invalid.

Peru does include an Italian player, Gianluca Lapadula, who has citizenship because his mother is from the South American country.

There is also an extremely remote and unlikely scenario where FIFA would simply promote the team with the highest world ranking that failed to qualify for the tournament, which in the case of 2022 would be Italy.

Ranocchia: ‘My best goal helped Inter reach Coppa Final’

Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia says his goal against Empoli in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 was the best one he has ever scored in his career and insists that playing for the Nerazzurri was his childhood dream.

The 34-year-old will likely leave the Nerazzurri at the end of his contract in June but has one last chance to win a trophy with the club in the Coppa Italia Final against Juventus tonight.

“The Coppa is the first trophy I won with the Nerazzurri. I have great memories of the Final against Palermo. It was thrilling to share the pitch with the heroes of the treble,” he said in an interview on the match programme.

“It’s always been a dream to play for a big club like Inter. Wearing this shirt is an honour to me.

“The goal against Empoli [in the Round of 16] was the best one of my career,” he added.

“It helped us reach this stage and after that victory, we beat Roma and Milan. We’ll need full focus tonight and try to avoid any sort of mistake. We know that we play against a strong team. It’s tough to face them, but we are ready to do it.”

Gollini set for Serie A return after Tottenham loan

Pierluigi Gollini is expected to return to Serie A in the summer, with Lazio and Torino interested in securing his services.

The Italy international has only managed 10 appearances while on loan at Tottenham this season, failing to make his Premier League debut.

The 27-year-old moved to North London on loan from Atalanta last summer and Spurs would have made his transfer permanent after his 20th match for the club. It is now impossible for Gollini to reach as many appearances, so his return to Italy is on the cards.

However, Atalanta are unlikely to keep hold of him, considering that they signed Juan Musso less than a year ago and that the Argentina international has proved to be worth every penny invested in signing him.

Torino and Lazio have emerged as possible options for Gollini who has a contract until 2024 in Bergamo.

Lazio will see Thomas Strakosha and Pepe Reina leave the club, while Torino want a new man between the sticks in 2022-23 after the disappointing performances of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic this term. Etrit Berisha is expected to remain at the club as a second-choice goalkeeper. According to Tuttosport, Alessio Cragno and Alex Meret are also on the Granata’s agenda.

Ancelotti jokes about Liverpool clash and explains his man-management ability

Carlo Ancelotti admits he had to change his style and idea of football over the years and jokes about the upcoming Champions League Final against Liverpool: ‘It’s going to start 0-0, so that’s a good starting point for us.’

The Italian tactician has qualified for a Champions League Final for the fifth time in his career, more than any other coach. His Real Madrid side will face Liverpool on May 28 at Paris’ Stade De France.

“I think the final is going to start 0-0, so that’s a good starting point for us,” he told SiriusXM FC’s The Football Show, as quoted by Football Espana.

“We’re happy to be able to play the Final and of course, we’re going to play against a tough team, one of the best in Europe. But when you play the final of the Champions League, you’re going to have to fight against one of the top teams in Europe.

“We’re excited to play this game and we’re going to prepare really well. We’re going to be 100% fit and we’re going to try to play our game. That’s the target we have.

“In this kind of game, you have to play with courage and personality. We have to prepare our game in order to show our quality and Liverpool will do the same. You can’t play a game to try to avoid the quality of your opponent, you have to try your best to show your quality. And we have a lot of quality. So do Liverpool. So whoever is able to do that best is going to win.”

Ancelotti is also the only coach to have qualified for the Champions League semis in four decades and holds the record for the most victories in Europe’s elite competition along with Bob Paisley and his former assistant and player Zinedine Zidane.

How has Ancelotti changed his view on football through the years?

“I think that the methodology of training in football has changed a lot in the last 20 years,” the 62-year-old admitted.

“So I’ve had to be ready to change my style and my idea of football, because the rules have changed. It’s a completely different sport. But what hasn’t changed is my relationship with the players. That’s the same.

“The important thing is the relationships you have with other people. I’m with my players every day – actually, it’s not right to call them my players. I’m with my friends every day. Because there’s the player and then there’s the person.

“Players are people playing football. When you ask most of them who they are they’ll say that they’re a player. But no, they’re men who play football. And sometimes I tell them that I put the player on the bench, not the man. If you’re a serious professional who respects the people they work with you’ll always come out top.”

Ancelotti returned to Madrid for a second spell at the club last summer, signing a three-year deal at the Estadio Bernabeu. He has won the La Liga title this season, becoming the first-ever coach to win the title in the top five European leagues.

Juventus transfers: Chiellini receives offer from MLS

Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini has reportedly been offered a contract by MLS side LAFC.

The Italy international sees his Juventus contract expire in 2023 but is ready to leave the club at the end of the season following Italy’s failed attempt to qualify for Qatar 2022.

The experienced defender must decide whether to retire or continue his career for one more season abroad. According to The Athletic, he has received an offer to play in the MLS in 2022-23.

According to the report ‘LAFC did not offer Chiellini a designated player contract, meaning they would not be able to pay the veteran Italian more than $1.65 million (£1.31 million) for the 2023 campaign.’

Chiellini postpones announcement on his future and aims dig at Inter

Vancouver Whitecaps are also considering a move for the Azzurri captain, who will play his final game with the national team in June against Argentina.

Chiellini hasn’t yet confirmed that he will leave Juventus in the summer but suggested so during a press conference attended by Football Italia yesterday.

The Bianconeri captain revealed that he could have retired after Italy’s triumph at Euro 2020 last summer or even if VAR hadn’t disallowed Marko Arnautovic’s goal against the Azzurri in the Round of 16.

Mancini sends message to Italy youths

Roberto Mancini was spotted in the stands to watch the Primavera derby between Inter and Milan on Monday, signalling that he is keeping a close eye on Italy’s youths after the Azzurri’s World Cup fiasco.

There’s a massive debate on whether Serie A clubs should have more trust in the product of their academies and for this reason, the Italian Government could limit the use of the growth decree, making it available only for players returning to Italy after at least two years spent abroad.

Leonardo Bonucci’s claims about Italy’s young players last week also caused debate in Italy, where fans and media are still trying to understand the reasons why the Azzurri have failed to quality for a second successive World Cup.

Latest Bonucci claims spark debate on Italy youths

Mancini watched the Milan Primavera derby on Monday (2-2) and according to Tuttosport, it’s a clear signal of a new path that the CT wants to take by keeping an eye on more young prospects. It’s a kind of new thing for the CT, who is not accustomed to watching games of youth teams.

To be fair, the Samp legend has never lacked trust in young players. For example, he gave the first call-up to Nicolò Zaniolo in 2018, even before the Roma starlet made his Serie A debut.

However, he was criticised for not using young players enough, especially during the World Cup qualification group and in the game against North Macedonia in March, when he was probably too grateful to players who had won the Euros only a few months earlier.

Totti: ‘How Roma will make Mourinho happy’

Roma legend Francesco Totti confirms he will go to Tirana to watch the Conference League Final between Roma and Feyenoord and says the Giallorossi will make José Mourinho happy with new signings over the summer.

The Serie A side have qualified for their first European Final in 31 years and could win their first trophy since 2008. Francesco Totti was part of the team that lifted the Coppa Italia under Luciano Spalletti more than ten years ago and will follow Mourinho’s team in Tirana on May 25.

“We haven’t played a Final for a long time and it’s vital to lift a trophy. We’ll go to Tirana with a great desire, I’ll be there as well,” he told reporters at an event before tonight’s Coppa Italia Final.

The 2006 Italy World Cup winner added that he’d rate Roma’s season 5.5 so far.

All the Mourinho and Roma complaints about referees and VAR

The Giallorossi, especially their coach Mourinho, have complained because of a controversial penalty kick awarded to Fiorentina on Monday night.

“What happened in Florence is one of the many episodes not favourable to Roma. If VAR doesn’t help referees, it becomes more complicated,” said Totti.

“Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world and I am sure the club will do everything to make him happy by signing the right players for him. Roma must improve every year, with or without a director.”

The last Totti line refers to the possibility of returning to the club with an operative role, but for now, both Roma and the former striker have been elusive about the matter.
