Crystal Palace set Guehi asking price amid Liverpool interest – Paper Round

Palace want £65m for Guehi

Crystal Palace will start the bidding at £65m should Marc Guehi ask to leave once he has returned from England duty at Euro 2024, the Telegraph reports.

Guehi started for England in their opening win over Serbia, and with two years remaining on his current contract and fears he may not sign a new deal, Palace could be willing to listen to offers for the centre-back.

The Telegraph adds: “Guehi performed brilliantly in England’s opening Group C victory over Serbia and had already caught the attention of Liverpool before the tournament kicked off.

“Palace will be wary of allowing Guehi to enter the final12 months of his contract and the player has put his club future on hold while he is away at the Euros with England.

“Palace are facing a difficult summer, following their brilliant finish to last season under head coach Oliver Glasner, who Bayern Munich even enquired over.

“Chelsea, Bayern and Newcastle United last week contacted Palace over Michael Olise, while Guehi’s England team-mate Eberechi Eze has attracted strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur.”

Chelsea to sign ‘Little Messi’

Chelsea have moved closer to signing Estevao Willian from Palmeiras for a deal that could rise to £51m, the Standard reports. Willian has passed a medical, with the initial fee believed to be £29.5m.

The move would see Willian the latest in a string of South American players to join the club, and there are high hopes for the Brazilian 17-year-old winger.

The Standard writes: “Should the Chelsea deal hit its full range, that would make Estevao the most expensive South American teenage signing in history.

“Nicknamed ‘Little Messi’, Willian is one of the most highly regarded prospects in South America and Chelsea chiefs consider him as a potential future star.

“Chelsea’s new owners have targeted young South American talent from the outset of their Stamford Bridge tenure.

“Andrey Santos, Deivid Washington, Angelo and Kendry Paez have all been recruited to underpin a youthful contingent designed at creating a new backbone for Chelsea’s future.”

Duran ‘excited’ by Chelsea transfer

Jhon Duran is said to be excited by the prospect of joining Chelsea from Aston Villa, the Standard reports.

Duran could be set for a move to the Blues for a fee in the region of £40m, and while happy at Villa it is reported Chelsea are confident of signing the 20-year-old striker.

The Standard writes: “Duran is understood to believe he would be a good fit at Chelsea, both under the club’s wider vision and the approach of new head coach Enzo Maresca.

“The former Chicago Fire frontman would relish a chance to work alongside Nicolas Jackson, as both team-mate and competitor.

“Duran scored eight goals in the 2023-24 season at Villa, having made a £14.75million move from the US in January 2023.

“Chelsea are considered unlikely to look at swap deals in any move for Duran, but Villa are interested in a number of Blues players this summer.”

Wolves to sign Chelsea target

Wolves are set to sign Pedro Lima from Brazilian side Sport Recife despite Chelsea also being interested in the full-back, the Daily Mail reports. Wolves have agreed an £8.5m deal and is set to sign a five-year contract once he turns 18 in July.

The Mail writes: “Chelsea wanted Lima for sister club Strasbourg, who became part of Todd Boehly’s BlueCo family last year.

“But the teenager – who represented Brazil at the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup – has opted to move to Molineux instead.

“Lima will be hoping to break into the first team at Wolves. He has been playing senior club football since January when he made his debut for Sport Recife.”

Jones edges Brown to reach Championship League last 32 after dramatic finale

World Championship runner-up Jak Jones finished his day unbeaten at the Championship League in Leicester as Jordan Brown agonisingly missed out on the last 32 of the season’s first ranking event.

With both men level on four points and frame difference heading for the final match of the day in Group 8, Jones won the first two frames 2-0 with breaks of 72 and 61 only for former Welsh Open winner Brown to level at 2-2 with runs of 54 and 87.

With Jones making the highest break of the section with an 88 in a 3-1 win over Bulcsu Revesz earlier on Monday, Brown needed an 89 to deny Jones, but came up two points short as his opponent became the seventh Welshman to reach the second group stage.

Brown had earlier completed a 3-1 win over Revesz with both players drawing 2-2 with Antoni Kowalski to set up the group decider.

Elsewhere on Monday, Northern Irish teenager Robbie McGuigan edged Barry Pinches and Sanderson Lam on frame difference despite losing 3-1 to Norwich cueman Pinches in the final match of Group 7.

Pinches defeated local favourite Tom Ford 3-1 before Ford withdrew from the event due to medical reasons, but a 3-1 loss to Sanderson Lam ultimately buried Pinches’ hopes with McGuigan also defeating Lam 3-0.

McGuigan finished a frame better off than Pinches on six points and two frames above Lam.

Ricky Walden takes to the table on Tuesday in Group 24 at the Mattioli Arena.

There is £33,000 on the table for the winner plus a spot in the Champion of Champions later in the year which is worth another £12,500 for qualifying.

France sneak win as bloodied Mbappe comes off with busted nose

France got their European Championship off to a winning start as they beat Austria 1-0 as Kylian Mbappe was taken off with a bloodied, busted nose.

Les Bleus set the tempo from the first whistle, although chances were few and far between, apart from Mbappe seeing a low drive towards the near post tipped out for a corner.

At the other end, Ralf Rangnick’s side offered little from an attacking sense until Christoph Baumgartner was denied at close range by Mike Maignan, and that came only two minutes before the deadlock was broken when Maximilian Wober inadvertently flicked Mbappe’s cross into his own net.

It came as no surprise that Mbappe was the main attacking threat, but it was a huge shock when he curled one chance wide when sent through one-on-one after the break.

That proved to be his final real chance, as the striker was withdrawn with a facial injury late on, and while Austria remained tight at the back, they equally struggled to create too much at the other end as their campaign ultimately got off to a losing start.

TALKING POINT – Mbappe injury fears for France

Two-time European Champions France were pre-tournament favourites for a reason, and they rarely had to get out of second gear to beat Austria in a performance that suggests there is much more to come.

However, if they are to win the tournament, Kylian Mbappe will be central to their chances, and the fact he was withdrawn late on with what looked like a broken nose is somewhat worrying for Didier Deschamps.

Blood was pouring from the captain’s face after he collided with Kevin Danso’s shoulder, and it took a lot of physio attention before he was eventually withdrawn. Les Bleus will be hoping it does not result in a spell on the sidelines.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH Theo Hernandez (France).

It takes a lot to upstage players of the calibre of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele, but Theo Hernandez was the star of the show in Dusseldorf.

The France number 22 was rarely troubled from a defensive point of view, but it was from an attacking point of view that he really shone, with Austria struggling to get a handle on him.

The full-back got forward time and again and created a plethora of chances for his team, including two sublime crosses that were begging to be touched home, only to drift across goal to safety.

PLAYER RATINGS

Austria: Pentz 7; Posch 6, Danso 7, Wober 6, Mwene 7; Laimer 7, Seiwald 6, Sabitzer 6, Grillitsch 5, Baumgartner 7; Gregoritsch 6. Subs: Wimmer 7, Arnautovic 6, Trauner 6, Prass n/a, Schmid n/a

France: Maignan 6; Kounde 7, Saliba 7, Upamecano 7, Theo Hernandez 8; Dembele 6, Kante 8, Griezmann 6, Rabiot 6, Thuram 6; Mbappe 7. Subs: Kolo Muani 6, Camavinga 6, Giroud n/a, Fofana n/a

KEY MOMENTS

36’ BAUMGARTNER COMES CLOSE. That’s the best chance of the game so far, and what a move by Austria! An out-swinging Michael Gregoritsch cross is knocked down by Marcel Sabitzer to Christoph Baumgartner, who should score, but can’t bundle home from close range as Maignan saves!

38’ GOAL! AUSTRIA 0-1 FRANCE (Max Wober own goal). France finally break the deadlock, and Mbappe is at the heart of it of course! A magnificent burst of pace to drift past three defenders before crossing into the middle, where Wober accidentally flicks into his own net. 1-0!

55’ MBAPPE MISSES A SITTER! That is a collector’s item, it really is! Sheer pace from Mbappe again to break away from the defender. Wober, tracking back, can’t get close. He tries to bend into the corner and you’re just waiting for the net to ripple, but it flies wide! What a let off for Austria!

88’ PROBLEM FOR MBAPPE. The striker has been down for some time here after taking a Danso shoulder to his face. Blood is pouring from his nose. It doesn’t look good for him. He is eventually withdrawn, replaced by Olivier Giroud. How crucial could that be for France?

KEY STATS

  • Austria had not lost in seven games before tonight, claiming victory in six of those games
  • France remain unbeaten in their opening group game at a European Championships, winning seven times from ten attempts

Lukaku denied twice by VAR as Belgium stunned by Slovakia

A performance of discipline, aggression and intensity gave Slovakia a shock win over Belgium, Ivan Schranz’s early goal enough to snaffle the points. The Red Devils will still back themselves to qualify for the last 16, but they’ve put themselves under pressure and looked a long way away from contention.

Belgium started the game well with Jeremy Doku to the fore. But then on seven minutes, he passed the ball across his own box and it was intercepted, a lovely flick from Robert Bozenik setting Juraj Kucka for a shot, and though Koen Casteels saved it, Schranz was there to slot home a smart finish.

Though Belgium were a little better in the second half, especially once Lois Openda came on, and Romelu Lukaku had two strikes disallowed by VAR – one for a marginal but definite offside and the other, far more harshly, for handball by Openda in the build-up.

By and large, though, Slovakia defended well, recording their biggest win since beating Italy in the 2010 World Cup. With matches to come against Romania and Ukraine, they’ll fancy themselves to make the last 16 from here and rightly so, while Belgium – and Domenico Tedesco in particular – have much thinking to do.

Superb Romania cruise past Ukraine after Stanciu screamer

Romania opened their Euro 2024 campaign with a stunning 3-0 victory against Ukraine, inspired by Nicolae Stanciu’s wondergoal to get the party started.

Romania had been second-best until captain Stanciu smashed the ball into the top corner from range in the 29th minute, capitalising on poor distribution from Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

From then on Romania were well on top and doubled the lead shortly after the break when Razvan Marin’s speculative strike squirmed under Lunin.

Denis Dragus added a third with a tap-in, ensuring the thousands of Romania fans in Munich could enjoy a stroll to the country’s first European Championship win since 2000.

Romania now sit top of Group E and are well-positioned to qualify, given three points was enough to reach the knockout rounds of Euro 2020 as a third-placed side. Ukraine are bottom while Belgium and Slovakia play later today.

Bellingham leads nervy England past Serbia in opener

England opened their Euro 2024 campaign with a nervy 1-0 win against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

A tight game was settled with a goal after 13 minutes, when a deflected Bukayo Saka cross looped up for Jude Bellingham to head England in front.

In a tight game of few chances both goalkeepers were required to make good saves in the second half.

Predrag Rajkovic pulled off a superb reflex save to turn a Harry Kane header into the bar, while Jordan Pickford did well to turn over a late shot from Dusan Vlahovic.

England now lead Group C and will face Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday.

TALKING POINT – England win but fail to convince

The jury is still out on England’s chances. Opening matches in international tournaments are often tight, and England will be relieved to get out of Gelsenkirchen with three points. Their record in the opening games of the European Championship is poor, so this was a valuable win to take control of Group C.

England controlled the match in the first half, but ceded possession and territory in the second which led to some edgy moments. The addition of Conor Gallagher in midfield with 20 minutes to go was a notable change, and if England run into one of the favourites further down the line that may need to be their opening gambit.

Marc Guehi settled in well in his first tournament match, but there were notably quiet performances from Phil Foden and, bar one chance late on, Kane. A disjointed win for England, but a win nonetheless; there is a lot for Gareth Southgate to work on if England are to go deep in this tournament.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Jude Bellingham (England)

If you have seen the Adidas advert set to Hey Jude, you will be well aware that Bellingham carries a heavy amount of expectation in this England team. He was comfortably England’s best player, controlling midfield and arriving late in the box to head in the winning goal.

PLAYER RATINGS

Serbia: Rajkovic 7; Veljkovic 6, Milenkovic 6, Pavlovic 7; Zivkovic 6, Milinkovic-Savic 6, Gudelj 5, Lukic 6, Kostic 6; Vlahovic 6, Mitrovic 5

SUBS: Mladenovic 7, Ilic 6, Jokic 6, Tadic 6, Birmancevic 6

England: Pickford 7; Walker 7 , Stones 6, Guehi 7, Trippier 6; Alexander-Arnold 6, Rice 7, Bellingham 8; Saka 7, Kane 6, Foden 5

SUBS: Gallagher 6, Bowen 7, Mainoo 6

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

13′ GOAL! SERBIA 0 ENGLAND 1 (BELLINGHAM) England score from their first real attack. Walker slides a ball through the inside right channel for Saka into the area. Saka hangs a cross in to the middle, where Bellingham flies in to plant a header high into the corner.

20′ CHANCE! Alexander-Arnold loses the ball near his own area. Serbia work it to Mitrovic near the D, who blasts a fierce drive just wide of the near post. I think Pickford had it covered, but that’s a warning shot to England not to get careless.

25′ BIG CHANCE! Alexander-Arnold intercepts a ball in the centre circle. Saka picks it up and feeds Walker, sending him haring into the Serbian area at top speed. In the end Walker gets caught between crossing and shooting and does neither, trickling a low ball through the six yard box and out for a goal kick. He had to shoot there, surely.

77′ SUPERB SAVE! Bowen is straight into it, beating Mladenovic down the right and hanging a cross to the back post. Kane climbs high to thump a header at goal, which Rajkovic turns onto the bar and out. What a stop!

82′ GOOD SAVE Vlahovic gets to a free ball on the edge of the area, before spinning and unloading with his left foot. It’s straight at Pickford, who takes no chances and flicks the ball over the bar. From the ensuing corner Kane is required to head a bouncing shot out of the six yard box, which he celebrates enthusiastically.
