Liverpool face Amorim or De Zerbi decision after Alonso ruled out as Klopp replacement – Paper Round

Liverpool need to pay up for Amorim

The Telegraph reports that Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has a £12.8 million release clause which could be activated at the end of the season.

Liverpool are one of the favourites to land the manager as they search for a replacement for the outgoing Jurgen Klopp.

“Telegraph Sport understands the release clause in Amorim’s contract, that can be triggered at the end of this season, is €15 million.

“The clause, agreed with Sporting Lisbon, drops to €10m (£8.5m) in the summer of 2025 – and its existence means it will be easier for Liverpool to agree a deal with the Portuguese club should they eventually decide to make a move for the highly rated 39-year-old.

“It had previously been claimed in Portugal that the figure to release Amorim, who signed a new four-year deal in 2022, was significantly higher – around twice as much.”

Brighton want big payout for De Zerbi

The Mirror believes that Roberto De Zerbi would cost Liverpool the same figure as Amorim – £12.8m – to replace Klopp next season.

Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain with Bayer Leverkusen has slightly narrowed the potential candidates this summer

The paper reports: “Liverpool will have to fork out a cool £12.8 million if they want to make Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi their next manager.

“The Reds have learned that most talked-about target Xabi Alonso is now leaning towards staying at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season, ruling him out of the race to succeed Jurgen Klopp. His Leverkusen side are 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with just eight games to go, having gone unbeaten for the entire season so far in all competitions.

“Given that he could potentially have a treble on his CV come June, Alonso is arguably Europe’s most sought-after manager, especially aged 42. But like fellow admirers Bayern Munich, Liverpool are now being forced to look elsewhere for their next boss and De Zerbi has emerged as a leading candidate for both clubs.

“Brighton aren’t willing to let him go on the cheap, however, with the Premier League side likely to demand his full €15m (£12.8m) release clause should the Italian want to leave, just like the £21.5m they received in Graham Potter’s exit to Chelsea. De Zerbi, 44, is also being eyed by Barcelona, who are limited when it comes to how much they can spend but remain interested in a move.”

Chelsea set to keep three youngsters

Chelsea have been known to sell on their young players to balance the books, but the Evening Standard thinks that Alfie Gilchrist, Jimi Tauriainen and Mason Burstow will not be sold next summer.

The paper writes that, “Gilchrist is expected to stick around next season despite Chelsea’s intention to sign both a new left-back and centre-back.”

Of Tauriainen, the story comments: “The 20-year-old midfielder made his debut against Leeds in the FA Cup.

“An injury-hit spell since joining Chelsea has slowed his progress, but he finally made his Finland Under-21s debut this month.

“He will count as a homegrown player by the summer and will target a loan move to continue his development.”

And for Burstow: “Just one goal in 20 Championship appearances has seen Burstow face criticism and a difficult learning curve at the Stadium of Light.

“But he remains highly regarded at Chelsea. With just one year left on his contract, his option is likely to be used and another loan sought in the summer.”

Newcastle target Maldini

Paolo Maldini and Hugo Viana are both in the running to replace Dan Ashworth as sporting director at Newcastle.

The Sun suggests that with Newcastle looking to agree a deal with Manchester United to let Ashworth move on, a replacement is being targeted.

The paper states: “AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini and former Newcastle ace Hugo Viana are among the candidates to replace outgoing sporting director Dan Ashworth at St James’ Park.

“Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave as The Magpies and Manchester United continue to negotiate a complicated deal that could see him moving to Old Trafford this summer.

“The 53-year-old’s contract runs out in 2026 and United are trying to thrash out a compensation deal with the Toon who have demanded double the £10 million offered.”

Man Utd face stiff competition for Olmo with Man City, Real interested – Paper Round

Man Utd face competition for RB Leipzig star Olmo

Manchester United are monitoring Dani Olmo but may face competition from neighbours Manchester City as well as Chelsea, Tottenham and Real Madrid for the RB Leipzig star.

That is according to a report in the Mail, which claims the Spain international – who starred in his nation’s 3-3 thrilling draw with Brazil on Tuesday – could be available for £52 million.
The outlet writes: “Manchester United and Real Madrid are among the clubs maintaining a watching brief on Dani Olmo this summer.

“The 25-year-old Spain international is continuing to excel at Red Bull Leipzig and has a clause that becomes active this summer when he can leave for £52 million.

“Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham are also among the clubs who continue to keep an eye on Olmo’s progress, particularly with his ability to play on either flank or off the striker.

“Real are expected to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer and will welcome the arrival of Brazilian Kendrick in July. They may also have to bring forward a bid for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies which would eat into finances but president Florentino Perez remains open to adding Spain’s best players to his glittering squad if it became financially viable.

“United are in the market for a centre forward, centre-back and full-back this summer plus a central midfielder. Much will hinge on who departs also.”

Alonso ‘likely’ to remain Bayer Leverkusen manager

Xabi Alonso is “now likely” to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Liverpool and Bayern Munich disappointed.

With both clubs looking for a new manager this summer, it was widely reported that the Spaniard was at the top of their list.

But with Leverkusen leading the way in the Bundesliga, remarkably still unbeaten after 26 games, Alonso has reportedly opted to stay.

An article in the Mail reads: “Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been dealt a blow in their search for a new manager after both received strong discouragement in their quest to appoint Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard now likely to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

“Alonso had been strongly mooted as a Jurgen Klopp successor since the German announced he was to leave the club this summer, but Liverpool had been given no reason to believe the former midfielder wanted to leave the Bundesliga leaders.

“It now appears Alonso, 42, is out of the running for the Anfield job, which makes Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim the leading candidate alongside Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

“Amorim, 39, will likely get an interview at Liverpool and it is believed he scored well on internal data tests.

“Bayern had been public in their desire to recruit Alonso, perhaps a tactic to unsettle Leverkusen’s title tilt, but president Uli Hoeness on Thursday said it would be ‘probably impossible’ to lure him to Munich this year.”

Joselu linked to ‘shock’ move to Man Utd

Spanish striker Joselu could be in line for a “shock transfer” to Manchester United, claims The Sun.

Formerly of Stoke and Newcastle, the 34-year-old striker is currently on loan at Real Madrid from Espanyol.

“Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a shock transfer move for Stoke flop Joselu,” the report states.

“Relevo claims representatives from Old Trafford have already jetted to Spain to enquire about a summer deal.

“Joselu is technically still tied down to Espanyol, with his contract expiring in 2025.

“And United believe he fits the bill for a back-up role to Rasmus Hojlund.

“However, The Red Devils reportedly face competition from several other English sides.

“A move for Joselu would also depend on the viewpoint of their next sporting director, which could be Dan Ashworth.

“And the fact remains that Joselu’s priority is to remain at Real Madrid.”

Boehly to be replaced as Chelsea chairman

Todd Boehly will be replaced as Chelsea’s chairman in 2027, according to the Mail.

The American, who took the position from Bruce Buck, has been in the role since June 2022.

The report reads: “Chelsea will appoint a new chairman in 2027 to replace Todd Boehly, Mail Sport understands.

“As part of an extraordinary agreement the club’s American co-owners can pass the chairmanship between themselves every five years. And it can be revealed that the intention is to do just that when the opportunity arises at the end of the 2026-27 season.

“Under the terms of the group’s takeover, Boehly is thought to have ‘gone first’ despite holding a minority stake.

“Clearlake Capital, the private equity firm managed by fellow owners Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, have a 61.5% share in the club’s holding company while Boehly has an equal split of the remaining 38.5 per cent with Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.

“However, the option to choose the first chairman is thought to have been connected to the terms of the 2022 sale agreement which, while there would be no negative impact or cost or interest payout from club coffers, state that Boehly’s group would be liable to pay any first losses in the event of a realisation or a sale.

“Mail Sport understands that Boehly’s group hold what is termed ‘common stock’, while majority stakeholders Clearlake have ‘preferred stock’ which comes with more protection against any financial downside.

“Eghbali or Feliciano could take the role themselves or may identify a third party to take the reins. No decision on who would take the chairmanship has been made, but Boehly will be removed from the post.

“He would then have the option to return in 2032 should he wish to do so and should he retain his stake at Stamford Bridge. He and his group could also look elsewhere.”

Manchester United want Kante as Ten Hag draws up shortlist – Paper Round

Kante targeted by Ten Hag

Manchester United’s new manager Erik Ten Hag is looking to next season and drawing up his plans – much of which we will discuss later – but The Mirror has one surprise suggestion. The Dutchman is keen to bring in N’Golo Kante from Chelsea. The 31-year-old French international has a year left on his current deal and Thomas Tuchel may let him go to rebuild the side.

Paper Round’s view: Kante is clearly a class act and a popular player everywhere he goes – United need to change the mood at Carrington if recent reports are to be believed. It is a gamble to bring in a player the wrong side of 30 though and the key would be to give him a relatively short contract – but it is not clear if a player of Kante’s standing would need to stoop.

Ten Hag to keep Ramsay

Manchester United’s incoming new manager Erik ten Hag is finalising his plans for next season and has met with John Murtough, the club’s Football Director to discuss them. The Telegraph reports that he has made the decision on his coaching line up, and the Dutchman is keen to retain the side’s set-piece specialist, Eric Ramsay.

Paper Round’s view: United aren’t especially impressive at set pieces, but most clubs tend to struggle unless they put hours in on the training ground. Given the vast scope of the problems at the club that Ten Hag has to address, perhaps it is simply easy to retain a coach with limited responsibilities and focus first of all on the defence, passing, attacking and morale.

Seven options for Ten Hag

The Mail reports that Erik ten Hag and prospective assistant manager Steve McClaren attended a meeting in the Netherlands to discuss next season at Old Trafford. Seven potential transfers are listed. One is Chelsea midfielder Declan Rice, and another is Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong. In attack, Darwin Nunez and Victor Osimhen are possibilities, and there are three names for a defence that has struggled to keep clean sheets: Jurrien Timber, Paul Tores and Tyrell Malacia.

Paper Round’s view: United will lose Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Lee Grant, Jesse Lingard and very possibly more players this summer, including Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Mason Greenwood. While that presents a huge challenge for Ten Hag to kick-off with an extensive rebuild, it is probably what the club need to sort their future out.

PSG consider three options

Paris Saint-Germain have lined up three managers to potentially replace Mauricio Pochettino in the capital. Pochettino struggled to get his team to compete in the Champions League and the club want a rebuild. Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Thiago Motta at Spezia is one option, former Germany coach Joachim Low is another, as is River Plate manager Michel Gallardo.

Paper Round’s view: It’s always a risk appointing a manager from another continent and it doesn’t seem that PSG can afford more gambles – Gallardo would be that. However Low is far from perfect given he is not used to the day-to-day pressure of club management, and Motta might not have the experience. However, he used to play for PSG so at least could slot in swiftly.

Lewandowski confirms intention to leave Bayern Munich

Robert Lewandowski has paved the way for a move away from Bayern Munich by saying the draw with Wolfsburg on Saturday was likely his final game for the club.

Bayern director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic said on Saturday morning that the Poland international, who is heading towards the final year of his contract, had asked to leave the club.

Barcelona are reported to be keen on signing the forward, although Salihamidzic said no offer had been tabled by the Catalan club.

“I will not renew my contract.”

Commenting on the prospect of moving to Barcelona, Lewandowski added: “I have not received any proposal.

“We want to find the best solution for both parties – for me and for the club.”
