Serie A | Empoli 1-1 Salernitana: Penalty save blows race wide open

Salernitana fought back for a point in Empoli, but saw a late Diego Perotti penalty saved by Guglielmo Vicario, this result still mathematically relegating Venezia and leaving the rest wide open.

The Tuscans were already comfortably mid-table, while Davide Nicola had dragged his side kicking and screaming from a seemingly impossible situation to one point clear of the drop zone. Valerio Verre and Petar Stojanovic returned from suspension, with Riccardo Marchizza, Lorenzo Tonelli and Nicolas Haas injured. Franck Ribery and Emil Bohinen sat out bans after the chaotic 1-1 draw with Cagliari.

Just seven minutes in, Fabiano Parisi needed a goal-line clearance to prevent the Milan Djuric header on a corner. Moments later, Guglielmo Vicario fingertipped a Norbert Gyomber header onto the underside of the bar from Simone Verdi’s free kick.

However, it was Empoli who broke the deadlock when Kristjan Asllani threaded through for Patrick Cutrone, who squeezed his right-foot shot between the goalkeeper and the near post. That was Cutrone’s third Serie A goal of the season, his second past Salernitana.

Ivan Radovanovic’s daisy-cutter flashed inches wide, while Pasquale Mazzocchi and Ederson strikes skimmed the far top corner.

Valerio Verre tested Luigi Sepe from distance and Cutrone should’ve made it 2-0, his free header off target from six yards.

Guglielmo Vicario made a simply extraordinary save to claw Federico Bonazzoli’s header off the line after a Matteo Ruggeri cross.

Moments later, Empoli went on the counter and Cutrone hit the base of the upright, then Sepe needed a double save on Nedim Bajrami and Filippo Bandinelli.

Vicario made another extraordinary save on Djuric’s header and the attempted Bonazzoli tap-in. However, Vicario also fumbled the successive corner and Bonazzoli equalised with a spectacular bicycle-kick.

The drama wasn’t over, as Mamadou Coulibaly and Simone Romagnoli both lunged at the same ball, the Salernitana man getting there millimetres earlier and so a penalty was awarded after a VAR review. Diego Perotti stepped up, but his spot-kick was fingertipped out of the bottom corner by Vicario.

Andrea La Mantia almost won it for Empoli, a header inches over in the final kick. At the final whistle Perotti collapsed in tears, consoled by his teammates.

Investcorp makes improved bid to buy Milan?

According to multiple reports in Italy, Elliott has put negotiations with Investcorp on hold, so the Bahrain-based fund could soon make an improved offer to buy Milan.

The exclusivity negotiations period between Elliott and Investcorp expired at the end of April and the American investment fund has also received an offer from Liverpool’s minority shareholders RedBird Capital Partners.

Although their proposal is believed to be lower than Investorp’s, the Bahraini fund has put €800m on the table in cash and the other €400m as debt towards banks and according to Milannews, Elliott expects a higher cash offer.

Scaroni: ‘There are two offers for Milan’

Buying the Serie A giants has become a priority for Investcorp’s Executive Chairman Mohammed Al-Ardhi, who is ready to make an improved bid to get control of the club. Elliott expects a higher cash offer and will decide on the club’s new owner at the end of the season when the financial results of the current campaign will be more precise.

Investcorp’s proposal is in the region of €1.1 billion, while RedBird Capital Partners has offered circa €1 billion.

Juventus and Inter compared: Who has the most valuable squad and more

Juventus and Inter meet in the Coppa Italia Final today and although the Bianconeri have a more valuable squad, the Nerazzurri can count on more experienced players.

The two sides meet at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome tonight and while Juventus will try to end the season with at least one trophy in their hands, the defending Serie A champions will be looking for their second piece of silverware this term.

Inter are unbeaten against Juventus this season and could win three games in a row against the Bianconeri for the first time since 1929-30.

Tuttomercatoweb analysed the two squads highlighting that the Bianconeri can count on a slightly more valuable squad: €555m against Inter’s €529m. The average value of Bianconeri players is €22m, €1m more than Inter’s (considering 25 players per team).

The Bianconeri’s annual gross wage bill is circa €170m, while the Nerazzurri spend €140m to pay their players’ salaries.

Max Allegri has a younger squad (27-year-old on average) than Inzaghi (circa 30-year-old) and the Benamata also have more foreign players than the Old Lady: 17 (68%) to 14 (56%).

Video: Juventus and Inter Presidents Agnelli and Zhang meet before Coppa Final

Inter President Steven Zhang and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli met at the Bianconeri hotel in Rome this morning, hours before the Coppa Italia Final.

Juventus and Inter meet at the Stadio Olimpico at 20.00 UK time tonight. However, there was a preliminary gathering in the morning when Agnelli and Zhang met at the Grand Hotel Parco dei Principi, where the Bianconeri are staying.

A few Old Lady’s fans have been spotted outside the Juventus hotel, but no player has shown up yet. Despite the clubs’ rivalry on the pitch, Agnelli and Zhang are on very good terms and the Juventus’ No.1 often praised his Inter counterpart in the past.

Why Haaland didn’t join Juventus in 2017

Erling Haaland has signed with Manchester City, but Juventus could have secured his services in 2017 when he went to Turin to watch a game at the Allianz Stadium.

The Borussia Dortmund star was under contract with Molde at that time but had already attracted the interest of many clubs in Europe, including Juventus. The Serie A giants had been in talks with his agent Mino Raiola and invited the striker and his father to watch a game at the Allianz Stadium.

He was an unknown player to many football fans at that time and a few years later, a picture from that night showing Haaland wearing a Juventus hat became viral.

Juventus were ready to pay €4m to secure his services, but the striker snubbed a move to Turin as the Old Lady had planned to send him out on loan or let him play for one season in their U23 team in Italy’s third division.

“Things must be put into context,” Juventus director Federico Cherubini told Tuttosport in September.

“Young players can be scared about going out on loan, we were at the beginning of our U23 project and perhaps the perspective we offered him wasn’t too exciting.

“Maybe the idea of going out on loan wasn’t ideal for a player like him. Perhaps, today things would be different.”

Marchisio highlights Juventus’ issues in Coppa Final and summer transfer window

Former Juventus and Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio thinks Inter are ‘more complete’ than the Old Lady and highlights the Bianconeri’s issues for 2022-23: ‘They’ll have to replace Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini.’

The Serie A giants meet Inter in the Coppa Italia Final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome tonight. It’s their last chance to win a trophy this season and avoid ending the campaign empty-handed for the first time since 2010-11.

“Juventus reached the Final and looking at the path, they had a tough start. If they win the cup, they will get a passing grade for the season. If they don’t no,” Marchisio told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“To me, Inter were the favourite, stronger and more complete. However, Juventus have closed the gap despite a few defects which they still have.”

Dusan Vlahovic hasn’t scored in the last four games across all competitions, while Dybala and Chiellini could lift their last trophy at Juventus tonight.

“I don’t want to make the mistake of trying to know which Allegri’s targets were. Ronaldo left at the beginning of the season, then Chiesa got injured and Vlahovic arrived. All these situations have led to tactical changes,” said Marchisio.

“Vlahovic is a pure talent, but his strong start made everyone think that he’d had no issues settling in. It can’t be that way. It takes time, but these six months were useful for him and Juventus and during the next season, he’ll have to show his qualities consistently.”

Where do Juventus need to improve next season?

“Juventus lack a real playmaker, but I think there is another problem in defence. Chiellini will stop, Bonucci must be handled. Same in attack, where Dybala has had highs and lows, but he has great figures at the club.

“It won’t be easy to replace him. Juventus need to understand what to do, whether to sign a young player or sign an ‘already made’ champion.

“Not reaching an agreement in the last few years affected both the club and the player. Juventus had a player that wasn’t mentally free, sometimes, that could be the reason behind injuries as well. Dybala hasn’t always been consistent but has scored 115 goals.”

Juventus confirmed in March that they would not extend Dybala’s contract. On the other hand, Chiellini hasn’t officially confirmed that he will leave Juventus at the end of the season but suggested so during yesterday’s pre-match press conference attended by Football Italia. The Italy defender has won 19 trophies in Turin and could either retire or move to the MLS in June.

Serie A Liveblog: Fiorentina vs. Roma

Join us for all the build-up and action as it happens from this evening’s Serie A game between Fiorentina and Roma, a head-to-head for European qualification.

It kicks off at the Stadio Franchi at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The Giallorossi need a win to stay level with Lazio in fifth place, while the Viola would catch Roma and Atalanta on 59 points with a victory.

Jose Mourinho’s men are stretched a little thin, as they are coming off the Conference League semi-final with Leicester City and preparing for the May 25 Final against Feyenoord.

If Roma win the Conference League, they’ll go directly into the Europa League next season.

Curiously, if Roma win the Conference League and finish eighth or below, then they would go into the Europa League with the sides in fifth and sixth, plus seventh heads to the Conference League play-offs.

If Roma don’t win the trophy, then fifth and sixth go into the Europa League, seventh into the Conference League play-offs.

Milan’s Scudetto celebrations may force Inter fans out of San Siro

Should Milan win the Serie A title, Inter fans may be forced to quickly leave the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza after their match against Sampdoria to make space for the Rossoneri’s celebrations.

La Gazzetta dello Sport details how Lega Serie A hoped to bring forward Sassuolo-Milan and Inter-Sampdoria to Saturday May 21 at 15:00 local time, allowing for the official celebrations to take place the following day at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, regardless of the results.

This plan has collapsed, however, due to a big concert organised by Radio Italia in Piazza Duomo in Milan on Saturday. Obviously there would be significant policing and public order problems should a Milanese team win the title whilst the concert is taking place in such a public area, so the matches will have to be played on Sunday.

It’s likely that the two matches will kick off at 15:00 on the Sunday, but this could pose a problem. Should Inter win the title, there would be no issue as they’re already playing at home, but things get a little bit complicated if Milan secure the Scudetto.

The Meazza would have to be emptied of Nerazzurri fans in order to allow the Rossoneri fans the space to celebrate. Everything would be quickly transformed from Inter branding to Milan, something that precedent proves feasible.

Back in 2008, Inter celebrated their Scudetto on May 18 at the Meazza after beating Parma away in the afternoon. The stadium had hosted Milan-Udinese that afternoon and everything was quickly turned around ahead of the party.

Updates regarding this plan are expected in the coming days and contacts between the clubs and the police are constantly ongoing.
