Evans leads home Jaguar one-two to win at Monaco after two safety cars

Mitch Evans took his first win of the season after leading a perfect team performance at Monaco, while Jaguar TCS Racing team-mate Nick Cassidy boosted his World Championship hopes.

Evans and Cassidy controlled the race after taking the lead from the 10th of 29 laps.

The drivers swapped lead throughout the second half of the race – allowing the other to save energy – before pulling clear in the closing stages.

Evans was given permission to hold the front position as the pair pulled away from the rest within the closing five laps.

Meanwhile, a second placed finish for Cassidy boosted his overall hopes taking him within seven points of series leader Pascal Wehrlein.

Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne completed the podium positions after spending the second half of the race unable to challenge the Jaguar leaders with team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in fourth.

TAG Heuer Porsche driver Wehrlein had started on pole position before conceding the lead to take attack mode on the third lap.

However, an ill-timed safety car scuppered the German’s hopes of regaining the lead and he eventually placed fifth.

Extra points for starting on pole and a fifth placed finish saw him gain ground on all of his championship rivals except Cassidy.

Reigning champion Jake Dennis had a nightmare round with car troubles rendering him with no chance of picking up points. .

Evans thanked his Jaguar team after taking his first ever victory in Formula E.

“I’ve been waiting so long for this, even before Formula E,” he said. “Even when I was in GP2 I was on the podium many times, also in formula E. I felt that I had many cracks at it, but came up short many times. To get it finally done today after a relatively tough start really kick-starts my season. What a place to do it, it’s somewhere where I live and a very special part of the world.

“It was a great bit of teamwork with Nick (Cassidy). This one is for the team.”

Driver of the day: Nick Cassidy

The Jaguar TCS Racing driver played the perfect team-mate even when a race victory looked momentarily on the cards.

Swapping the lead with race winner Mitch Evans during the second half it was Cassidy’s car which had more energy remaining in the final stages.

After asking for team orders Cassidy was left holding off any competitors in second as Evans took the honours.

However, the New Zealander is now just seven points behind championship leader Pascal Wehrlein despite having a disastrous rounds four, five and six.

Where the race was won and lost

4/29 – VANDOORNE TAKES LEAD

Wehrlein goes for attack mode in the third lap conceding the lead to Vandoorne. Wehrlein goes down to fifth. Evans and Cassidy also move up into podium positions.

6/29 – MORTARA HITS THE WALL.

The fifth lap has seen a series of crashes and there is debris all over the track after Mortara hits the wall.

The race is behind a safety car as the Mahindra Racing car is rescued from the track.

10/29 – EVANS TAKES LEAD

The Jaguar team-mates have been following so far and are now have strong energy in their cars.

Both drivers enable attack move and pass Vandoorne.

11/29 – DENNIS IN TROUBLE

Reigning world champion Dennis has problems with his car and has been forced to pit resulting in him moving to the back of the pack.

He has a wing change but it’s going to be a long way back from there.

15/29 – CASSIDY LEADS

Despite Evans have attack mode enabled Cassidy has taken the lead. The team-mates are playing the perfect tactical race so far.

Evans is now slowing the pack as Cassidy has all his attack mode to use.

18/29 – EVANS AND CASSIDY TRADE POSITIONS

The Jaguar drivers have again swapped positions as they allow each other to save energy.

However, both drivers could end up fighting for victory later in the race.

26/29 – MULLER INTO WALL

The safety car is back out after Muller collided with Hughes in a battle for 14th resulting in the Swiss driver hitting the wall.

Muller is stranded with his car unable to move. Two laps are added as a result of the two safety cars in the race.

31/31 – EVANS WINS

Mitch Evans takes his first Formula E victory completing a Jaguar one-two as Cassidy finishes second. Vandoorne gives everything to finish third.

WHAT HAPPENED IN QUALIFYING

This morning’s qualifying session threw up some surprises as Pascal Wehrlein took pole position and three points which took him top of the world championship standings.

Jake Dennis failed to make the duels and will start 18th on the grid on the tight street course. Fellow championship contender Oliver Rowland also has work to do and starts in 15th on the grid.

Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne (DS Penske) lost the final duel but will start on the front row and currently sits 11th in the championship.

Swiatek cruises past Cirstea to reach last 16 as she eyes maiden Madrid title

Top seed Iga Swiatek powered through to the last 16 at the Madrid Open after cruising past Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-1 on Saturday.

It was a merciless performance from the world No.1, who has now won three of her four sets this week by a score of 6-1.

Swiatek has lost to a player ranked outside the top 20 just twice in 2024 – while on clay, she hasn’t lost to a player outside that bubble since 2020.

World No. 30 Cirstea has now lost all four matches against Swiatek, with the Pole’s precision and accuracy too much for the Romanian at Manolo Santana Stadium.

It was Cirstea’s first time in the third round here since 2017 and her return was short-lived. She was under relentless pressure from Swiatek. She totalled 14 break points in the match, breaking Cirstea’s serve five time.

Cirstea conversely had just two chances to break her serve, converting a single break point in the match.

Swiatek made an emphatic start, claiming three consecutive breaks to take a 5-0 lead, but couldn’t take the bagel set, failing on her serve. Nonetheless, she took the seventh game with ease to seal the first set.

Cirstea managed to tie the second set one game each but from there, Swiatek rampaged to another ruthless set to take the match.

“I’m happy that I could play in a solid way and I [have the rest of] the day off!” Swiatek said after finishing in one hour and 18 minutes.

Swiatek will face either former No.1 Victoria Azarenka or Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo on Monday for a spot in the quarterfinals.

She is eyeing her first Madrid title after failing at the final hurdle to Aryna Sabalenka in last year’s final.

Madrid remains the only big European clay title that Swiatek has yet to win. At 22, she is already a three-time champion at Roland Garros and a two-time champion at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, but Madrid has eluded her so far.

Liverpool’s title hopes in tatters after draw at West Ham as Salah clashes with Klopp

Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes suffered a potentially fatal blow as Jurgen Klopp’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium.

The visitors hit back superbly after shipping the opening goal to Jarrod Bowen’s 43rd-minute header with goals from Andy Robertson (48′) and an unfortunate own goal by home goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (65′) earning them a 2-1 lead after Cody Gakpo had driven the ball against Angelo Ogbonna.

But Michail Antonio popped up on 77 minutes to power home a Bowen cross in earning West Ham a point that never looked likely after being pressed back for large swathes of the second half.

Liverpool remain third in the table, two points behind Arsenal before Mikel Arteta’s side visit Tottenham on Sunday, with champions Manchester City a point better off before their trip to Nottingham Forest.

City have two games in hand over Klopp’s side, while the Gunners have one.

A frustrating day of missed opportunity for Liverpool was perhaps best summed up by manager Jurgen Klopp and substitute Mo Salah exchanging words in the aftermath of Antonio’s equaliser for the home side.

“We’re in a very, very difficult position. If Arsenal win, it is five points and Man City have some games in hand. Not impossible, but very difficult,” conceded Cody Gakpo on TNT Sports.

West Ham stay eighth on 49 points from 35 games, with the excellent Bowen equalling Paolo Di Canio’s record total of 16 goals for the Hammers in a Premier League season.

Talking Point: Why was Gakpo denied chance of late winner?

Referee Anthony Taylor was caught up in controversy as he blew the whistle to stop play with Cody Gakpo apparently set to slot the winning goal late on.

West Ham goalkeeper Areola dropped the ball to his feet after apparently recovering from injury, but Taylor had been playing advantage due to an earlier infringement against the home side and opted to blow his whistle when he realised West Ham were no longer gaining an advantage.

In the spirit of the game, it would not have been correct for Taylor to allow Gakpo to score, but the easiest way to solve the confusion was to forget playing advantage and immediately award West Ham a free-kick before Areola needed treatment.

Player of the Match: Luis Díaz (Liverpool)

How Diaz left London without helping his side to three points is a minor mystery. The Colombian winger hit the post in the first half before playing provider for Andy Robertson’s equaliser and generally causing West Ham all sorts of problems with an outstanding display. Only the brilliance of Areola in the West Ham goal denied him seconds before the home side equalised.

Player Ratings

West Ham: Areola 8, Coufal 7, Zouma 6, Ogbonna 6, Emerson 7, Soucek 6, Alvarez 6, Kudus 6, Paqueta 6, Bowen 8, Antonio 8. Subs: Ward-Prowse 6

Liverpool: Alisson 6, Alexander-Arnold 7, Van Dijk 7, Quansah 6, Robertson 7, MacAllister 7, Gravenberch 6, Endo 6, Elliott 7, Gakpo 7, Diaz 8. Subs: Gomez 6, Szoboszlai 6, Nunez 6, Salah 6

Match Highlights

43′ GOAL! WEST HAM 1-0 LIVERPOOL (BOWEN) West Ham work a short corner as Bowen rises to head home the cross from Kudus. So simple. His 20th goal of the season after he had won the corner with his shot saved by Alisson. Awful defending by the visitors. A 1-0 lead for West Ham. Klopp looking bemused.

48′ GOAL! WEST HAM 1-1 LIVERPOOL (ROBERTSON) Brilliant move from Klopp’s men as Robertson reacts quickly from the Diaz pass to pop the finish into the net. Areola tipped it onto the post before it nestled in the net. Suddenly Liverpool fans in full voice.

65′ GOAL! WEST HAM UNITED 1-2 LIVERPOOL (AREOLA) Liverpool have turned this match right on its head. West Ham fail to deal with the corner as Gakpo drives the ball across goal. Hits Ogbonna, comes off Soucek on the line and ends up in the net off Areola. Can’t say it wasn’t coming.

77′ GOAL! (ANTONIO) WEST HAM 2-2 LIVERPOOL Bowen with the cross for Michail Antonio to power a header beyond Alisson and into the net. Alisson making a great stop from Emerson seconds earlier, but no chance with that finish. It is 2-2. Phew! What a finish is coming up.

79′ SALAH AND KLOPP EXCHANGE WORDS Both men caught up in the heat of the moment on the touchline. Doesn’t help when your team has just conceded a late equaliser. Pressure of elite football.

Trump breezes into quarters with impressive victory over Ford

Judd Trump wasted no time on Saturday morning, wrapping up a comfortable 13-7 victory over Tom Ford to reach the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship.

Speaking ahead of the day’s play, Eurosport’s Alan McManus said that Ford would need to “produce the performance of a lifetime” to stop the relentless juggernaut that was Trump.

Ford certainly made a nervy start. He got on the board first in the opening frame of the session with a lovely pot to middle but he followed that up by immediately missing the black and leaving a wide open table.

Trump, the 2019 world champion, couldn’t capitalise, missing what for him was a relatively simple blue and once again Ford was presented with chances to have a real stay at the table.

At the third attempt, Ford finally put a break together, sinking 76 to seal the frame and give himself a real confidence booster early on.

‘Long potting has been superb!’ – Trump produces outrageous long potting sequence

However, there was another error from Ford in the next after missing a tricky long red and Trump pounced, picking up his second century of the match with a break of 107 (his 78th of the season), to move one away from victory.

Trump had already notched up six half-century breaks as well as a ton in frame nine in the first two sessions.

Trump was in the groove now and even though in the 19th frame his positioning was a bit off, he found creative solutions to his problems with some outrageous potting.

Once again, Ford had a chance due to some small errors from Trump and he took that chance, making Trump wait once more.

But in the 20th frame, Trump wasn’t to be denied, getting on the table and making no mistake with an impressive break of 84.

After dispatching Hossein Vafaei with similar ease in the first round, Trump has sent a real message to his rivals for the title.

In the quarters, he will face either Jak Jones or Si Jiahui. The pair will resume their clash in the middle session on Saturday with Jones 9-7 ahead.

It also still leaves the possibility of a blockbuster semi-final against defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.

Nadal ‘hugely’ excited at prospect of playing doubles with Alcaraz at Paris Olympics

While doubts still swirl about his participation at the French Open, Rafael Nadal is at least excited about the prospect of partnering fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz at the Paris Olympics this year.

Singles world No. 3 Alcaraz has previously expressed his desire to play alongside the tennis icon, who is winding down his career after being plagued by injuries over the past year.

A hip issue kept Nadal sidelined for most of last season, and the Madrid Open is just his third tournament this year.

He says he shares Alcaraz’s wish, and hopes that the pair can get some time together on the court before the tennis competition at the Games, which will take place on clay at Roland-Garros where Nadal has won 14 major titles.

Both players are competing at the Madrid Open this week and Nadal spoke on the IGUALES podcast, putting an admittedly nervous Alcaraz at ease about partnering up.

“Carlos doesn’t have to ask me anything, all things being well, we’ll play,” Nadal said. “It’s also hugely exciting for me. If I’m not mistaken, I’ve heard it is for him too.

“So it would be great to play the odd tournament before the Olympics to prepare ourselves and to get some rapport on court.”

Nadal recently returned to competition in Brisbane in January before a thigh issue arose, returning in Barcelona earlier this month where he lost to Alex de Minaur in the second round.

He played his first match in Madrid on Thursday, cruising past 16-year-old Darwin Blanch, but was clear that his body didn’t feel tested and his participation at Roland-Garros is still up in the air.

Despite that, the 37-year-old is eyeing up a third gold medal in Paris this summer after triumphing in singles in the 2008 Beijing Games and doubles eight years later in Rio, while Alcaraz will be making his Olympic debut.

“I think if we’re both fit enough, why not? We could have the chance to form a great team and aspire to great things,” Nadal said of the partnership.

“It would be good for both of us. It would also be good for the Spanish team, so we’ll see how things progress.”

Nadal, a five-times champion in Madrid, faces Australian 10th seed De Minaur again on Saturday, in a second-round match.

Haliburton hits overtime winner for Pacers, two ejections in Dallas, Wolves on verge of sweep

Both the Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks have roared back from 1-0 down in their first-round NBA playoff series to now lead 2-1 against the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers respectively.

The Pacers won a thriller in Game 3, the first of the series to be played in Indianapolis, triumphing 121-118 in overtime behind Myles Turner’s 29 points.

A raucous crowd was fired up before the game started by new WNBA No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark, who was selected by the Indiana Fever.

A dramatic encounter saw 16 lead changes or ties in the final quarter plus OT before Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton hit the game-winner in just his third postseason game as part of a triple double.

“I live for these moments,” Haliburton said. “That’s why I’m here.”

His coach Rick Carlisle was left in awe of the level of basketball being played.

“The playoffs are insane,” Carlisle said the game.

“Guys are going to pull other-worldly efforts out of their hearts and their guts.

“The details – the playoffs are so much about the details. We have to understand these games are won and lost in the margins.”

The Bucks have real injury concerns ahead of Game 4. They are already down Giannis Antetokounmpo and saw Damian Lillard go down with a re-aggravation of an Achilles injury that he dealt with in the back-end of the regular season.

Meanwhile, another sell-out crowd – this time down in Texas – saw the Mavericks protect home court for the first game as they beat the Clippers 101-90 with another stellar defensive performance.

It was the second game in a row that the Mavs had kept their opponents under 100 points, led by another strong second-half showing from Kyrie Irving.

The guard notched 19 of his 21 points after the break, having watched running mate Luka Doncic put the pressure on in the first.

“[It’s] just his calming effect,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “He’s never in a rush. He’s never gonna panic. He feels that everything is under control. The guys trust him out there on the floor. You can see that in the second half.”

It was a mixed night for Doncic, who had a double double but had to settle for just 22 points as he went cold in the second.

“Luka has to take what they’re giving,” Kidd said. “The Clippers are a really good defensive team. They’re physical with Luka.”

However, opposing Clippers head coach Ty Lue said that he felt that Doncic was really impressive as a defender, something the Slovenia superstar isn’t necessarily renowned for.

“He’s gonna take the challenge,” Lue said.

“When your best player takes that challenge, you’re a whole different team.

“He’s not known for his defense. But stepping up, taking that challenge and wanting to play guys 1-on-1, that means a lot. He’s doing a good job of guarding our guys.”

The game was also marked by a pair of ejections as Russell Westbrook and P.J. Washington were both kicked out of the game with 6:10 remaining.

Westbrook got into a skirmish with Doncic but it was Washington who got properly involved with the Clippers guard, leading to a double-ejection.

“Always got to protect 77 [Doncic] at all costs,” Washington told ESPN. “So I mean obviously it was a hard foul and then he pushed him afterwards, so I was right there and I just had to step into it.”

In the final game of the night, the Minnesota Timberwolves moved to within one game of a series sweep against the hapless Phoenix Suns with a 126-109 victory in the first game in the desert.

The star of the show, as was so often the case for the Wolves in the regular season, was Anthony Edwards, who torched the Suns for 36 points, along with nine rebounds and five assists.

On the defensive end, Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for a mammoth 27 rebounds, 16 of those being defensive rebounds.

Unsurprisingly, the home Suns crowd were not happy with what they saw, leading to widespread boos before fans just left the arena early.

“They expect so much out of us and they pay their hard-earned money, and they deserve to react how they want to react,” Suns star forward Kevin Durant said.

“It’s on us as players to use it as fuel, and hopefully it ignites us for the next game.”

Guard Bradley Beal added: “I’ve never been swept a day in my life, I’ll be damned if that happens.”

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs but Devin Booker was confident, saying: “They say nobody’s ever done it before, that’s exciting.”

Suns head coach Frank Vogel added: “There’s no quit in our group. This group does not want the season to come to an end.”
