Chelsea survive scare to take WSL title after thrilling final day

Chelsea sealed their sixth Women’s Super League title on an enthralling final day – but it wasn’t without a fright.

Emma Hayes’ side trailed 2-1 at half-time and looked like giving up their season-long dominance of the division at the last. But three second-half goals saw them land their third title in a row at the expense of Arsenal, whose finished one point adrift of the Blues despite their 2-0 win at West Ham.

Chelsea had begun the day knowing that if they won their match against Manchester United, there would be nothing Jonas Eidevall’s Gunners could do to stop them taking the title.

But they got off to the worst possible start at Kingsmeadow as United took the lead on 13 minutes through Martha Thomas, who headed in from Katie Zelem’s free kick.

However that state of affairs didn’t last long as the Blues equalised five minutes later through Erin Cuthbert, who volleyed home into the corner.

The twists and turns kept coming though as Chelsea went behind again, United’s Ella Toone converting Leah Galton’s cross on 25 minutes.

With Arsenal drawing 0-0 with West Ham at this point, the Gunners were in pole position for the title.

But in the second half, Chelsea turned on the afterburners to roar out of the blocks, scoring twice in five minutes.

First Sam Kerr swung the title pendulum back her team’s way, hitting the ball high and beyond Mary Earps to equalise just moments after the resumption.

The home support were now in fine voice, and a third arrived shortly afterwards as Chelsea went ahead for the first time through Guro Reiten, who was on hand to tap in Beth England’s pass.

It had taken 51 minutes, but finally the Blues were in control of their own destiny.

However, nerves were still fraying as Arsenal – having struggled to break down an obdurate Hammers defence – finally did so, Vivianne Miedema playing through Stina Blackstenius who finished coolly to give her side the lead.

One goal from United would therefore have changed everything, especially as Arsenal then solidified their position by adding a second through Steph Catley.

However just seconds later, it looked to be all over as Chelsea strode into a 4-2 lead thanks to Kerr’s sensational second, a long-range finish over a stranded Earps.

There was to be no further change to the scoreline in either game and in the end Chelsea could afford to relax ahead of the full-time whistle, which was greeted by fervent celebrations among their fans.

In the day’s other games, Manchester City secured third place in the final standings and a place in next season’s Champions League by beating Reading 4-0.

Already-relegated Birmingham beat Aston Villa 1-0, while Tottenham beat Leicester 1-0 and Brighton and Everton played out a 1-1 draw.

Nketiah strikes twice to fire Arsenal closer to CL qualification

Arsenal took a significant step towards securing their place in next season’s Champions League with a nervy 2-1 win over 10-man Leeds who drop into the relegation zone.

Eddie Nketiah bagged an early brace against the club he was on loan to back in 2019-20 to put Mikel Arteta’s side in control.

However, despite the fact Leeds had to play with just 10 men for over an hour following Luke Ayling’s straight red card, Arsenal were made to sweat for their three points after Diego Llorente halved the deficit in the second half.

Premier League

Everton end away drought to boost survival hopes, West Ham thump Norwich

Leeds’ day got off to a terrible start when, with five minutes on the clock, goalkeeper Illan Meslier took a heavy touch and was immediately closed down by Nketiah, whose tackle took the ball over the line.

But it was to get much worse for Jesse Marsch’s side just minutes later when Nketiah doubled Arsenal’s advantage, finishing with a first-time shot from Gabriel Martinelli’s pull-back.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men, captain Ayling lunging in two-footed on Martinelli and although Chris Kavanagh initially showed the full-back a yellow card, the decision was overturned when the referee watched the replay on the monitor.

Arsenal appeared to be cruising towards three points until the 66th-minute when, out of nowhere, Leeds got on the scoreboard from their first corner of the game. Llorente was unmarked at the far post, and he made no mistake by smashing it past Aaron Ramsdale.

That set up a tense finale and although the nerves were tangible inside the Emirates, the hosts managed the game to secure a precious win in their quest for Champions League football next season.

Victory moves them four points clear of fifth-place Tottenham ahead of Thursday’s North London derby and with just three games left to play.

At the bottom of the table, Leeds drop into the relegation zone – level on points with 17th-place Burnley – after Everton defeated Leicester 2-1.

TALKING POINT – Arsenal are now just one victory from Champions League football next term

When Arsenal scored twice inside 10 minutes and then saw Ayling sent off for a moment of total madness shortly after, it looked like Arteta’s side were going to inflict humiliation on their opponents.

It didn’t quite work out like that, but at this stage of the season, results are ultimately the most important thing. And while Arteta will not be pleased with his side’s lacklustre second-half performance, he will be relieved his side have taken a significant step towards securing a Champions League place for the first time since 2016. Victory at Tottenham will now be enough but even a draw against their great rivals would be a huge result.

As for Leeds, they have fallen into the bottom three for the first time this calendar year. Everton have hit form at just the right time – they have now recorded back-to-back wins after their triumph at Leicester – and it appears to be a straight shootout with Burnley for survival. The Whites will take heart from their fightback, but what they need are immediate victories. Chelsea visit Elland Road next…

AS IT HAPPENED

MAN OF THE MATCH – Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)

The Brazilian is coming into form at the business end of the season and this was another scintillating display. His intelligent movement allowed him to expose the space down Leeds’ right side time and time again. He registered an early assist and the only thing missing from a complete performance was grabbing a goal for himself.

PLAYER RATINGS

Arsenal: Ramsdale 6, Tomiyasu 6, Holding 6, Gabriel 6, Soares 7, Elneny 6, Xhaka 7, Saka 7, Odegaard 7, Martinelli 8*, Nketiah 8.. subs: Lacazette N/A, Smith Rowe N/A, Pepe 5.

Leeds: Meslier 4, Ayling 3, Koch 5, Llorente 6, Firpo 5, Phillips 6, Klich 4, Raphinha 4, James 6, Harrison 5, Gelhardt 5.. subs: Rodrigo 5, Struijk 6, Bate 6.

KEY MOMENTS

5′ – GOAL! ARSENAL 1-0 LEEDS (EDDIE NKETIAH): Arsenal lead! A huge mistake by Leeds’ goalkeeper Meslier is punished! Receiving a back pass from Ayling, he takes a heavy first touch and Nketiah is immediately on his case, sliding the ball into the back of the net – it’s a gift!

10′ – GOAL! ARSENAL 2-0 LEEDS (EDDIE NKETIAH): A double from Nketiah! Arsenal are running away with this! Martinelli drives to the byline, riding a couple of tackles en route, and he looks up and pulls it back for Nketiah. It’s an instinctive first-time finish from the striker and Arsenal double their lead.

27′ – RED CARD! A horror challenge from Ayling as he lunges in with two feet on Martinelli. The referee initially produces a yellow card – but it’s going over to look at the monitor and we all know what that means… No major surprise as Chris Kavanagh shows Ayling a red card. Leeds’ day goes from bad to worse as they’re down to 10 men.

66′ – GOAL! ARSENAL 2-1 LEEDS (DIEGO LLORENTE): Oh, hello! Leeds have a goal out of absolutely nowhere! Game on! A corner – their first of the game – is flicked on by Firpo to the far post and Llorente is left all alone to smash it home!

KEY STATS

  • Eddie Nketiah is only the second Arsenal player to score twice in the opening 10 minutes of a Premier League match, after Nwankwo Kanu against Sunderland in October 2002.
  • Leeds haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 13 away league games against Arsenal (W3 D0 L10), since a goalless draw in February 1993.
  • Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 12 meetings with Leeds in all competitions (W10 D2) since a 3-2 home defeat in May 2003.

Manchester City weigh up Pogba swoop

The Daily Mail believes that Manchester City are considering a huge deal for Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. The 29-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and so can leave on a free transfer, and he is seen as a potential replacement for outgoing utility man Fernandinho. The France international is on £290,000 a week at United but that is unlikely to be a problem for City, who may face competition from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal to rival Man Utd for Martinez – Paper Round

02/05/2022 AT 22:10

Paper Round’s view: Pogba has been a hugely underwhelming player for United for the past few seasons and he has failed to show his talents under a string of managers. However his efforts for the France national team, where he won a World Cup, have shown that there is an excellent player there in the right circumstances. If he can get over his concerning lack of fitness that has crept into his game, with long-term injuries a regular feature, then he could finally win the trophies his talent merits.

United and Arsenal linked to £70m Neves

Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves in recent years, and the 25-year-old Portuguese could be put up for sale by his current club this summer as he has two years on his current deal. He would like to stay in England if he is sold, and there is no certainty that two other potential suitors, Barcelona and Juventus, could afford him.

Paper Round’s view: Neves is one of the best players outside of the top four and both Arsenal and United need to strengthen their midfields. There seems to be no shortage of funding for Mikel Arteta – who has just signed a new contract – and Erik ten Hag will presumably be looking for an adequate replacement for Pogba this summer, and Neves would probably contribute far more in a red shirt.

United face Ekitike battle

Manchester United are facing competition for Reims’ 19-year-old striker Hugo Ekitike, wanted by incoming manager Erik ten Hag. The Sun reports that the France under-20 international looked set to join Newcastle in the January transfer window but he turned down a deal. The Magpies continue to be interested. He is also wanted by Bayern Munich, while Arsenal are also keen on the youngster.

Paper Round’s view: If Arsenal and United are after Ekitike as well as Neves, it highlights that they are both struggling with their forward line. While United have Cristiano Ronaldo, they need a younger replacement for the long term, while Arsenal may start next year without Eddie Nketiah – wanted by Crystal Palace – and Alexandre Lacazette, whose contract will soon expire.

Nkunku to leave Leipzig

The Mirror reports that there could be another Arsenal vs. Manchester United battle. The player in question this time is Christopher Nkunku, RB Leizpig’s 24-year-old French forward, who can play across the forward line. While United and Arsenal are keen, there is also interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal, and current United boss Ralf Rangnick was baffled by the club’s lack of interest in him when he arrived.

Paper Round’s view: It should be no surprise that United had failed to track Nkunku, because they have rarely acted with any kind of sensible transfer strategy over the last decade. If Ten Hag wants to sign him then he faces a struggle, as United simply cannot offer the same promise of competence as any of the other teams who are reportedly interested in him.
