Ibrahimovic denies he was racist towards Lukaku, Pogba supports Swedish striker

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has denied his comments towards his former Manchester United teammate Romelu Lukaku in AC Milan’s Coppa Italia defeat against Inter Milan were racist.

He tweeted: “In ZLATAN’s world there is no place for RACISM. We are all the same race – we are all equal !!

Pogba to speak to Manchester United about his future

“We are all PLAYERS some better than others.”

His former Manchester United teammate Paul Pogba has come out in support of the 39-year-old.

He wrote on Twitter: “Zlatan… racist? He loves me too much so he’s the last person I’d think of as racist! Come on, don’t joke with that one!”

Ibrahimovic gave his side the lead in the Coppa quarter final, drilling in off the post, before tempers became frayed in the San Siro.

The Swedish striker and Lukaku, who played together at Manchester United, locked heads and exchanged words at the end of the first half, before the pair had to be restrained as the players left the pitch for the interval.

The referee cautioned both before giving Ibrahimovic another yellow card and a red in the second half for a foul on Aleksandar Kolarov – the first time the Swede has been sent off in Europe since being dismissed while playing for Paris St Germain at Chelsea in March 2015.

Pitchside microphones picked up Ibrahimovic saying “call your mother and do that voodoo ****.” to Lukaku, a reported reference to claims made in 2018 by Everton owner Farhad Moshiri that the Belgium striker opted to leave the club after receiving a “voodoo message”.

Lukaku sought legal advice to that comment. A representative for the player responded: “Romelu’s decision had nothing to do with voodoo.”

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli said Ibrahimovic apologised after he was sent off.

“He (Ibrahimovic) apologised like the great champion he is,” Pioli said.

“He got a bit caught up in the desire to help the team. It wasn’t easy to stay in the game a man down. The pressure from Inter was strong.”

Inter came from behind to win the match, with a penalty from Lukaku and a 97th-minute winner from Christian Eriksen sending Antonio Conte’s side through to the semi-finals.

United identify new midfield target, but no new talks for Ole – Paper Round

Pogba to speak to Manchester United about his future

“The 27-year-old Frenchman has been praised for his recent performances in a Manchester United shirt this season. He has scored three goals in 12 apperances with the club just one point off the summit behind fierce rivals Manchester City in second place. However his future is still uncertain and Pogba says he will speak to the clubu0027s hierarchy to find out their plans for him.”

United turn to Hoffenheim midfielder Baumgartner – Paper Round

“Manchester Untied are looking for a summer deal for Hoffenheim midfielder Christoph Baumgartner, but they are yet to start talks with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over giving him a new deal. West Brom want to take Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace, while Chelsea are moving on from Declan Rice now Frank Lampard has left.”

Opinion: Solskjaer succeeded where Mourinho failed, but doubts persist

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has created a winning spirit at Manchester United sorely lacking since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. It is an achievement that escaped David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. However, doubts still remain over the Norwegian’s long-term suitability to the role of manager at Old Trafford.”

Van de Beek not happy with United situation, Solskjaer confirms

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Donny van de Beek is not happy at Manchester United.

The midfielder made the move to Old Trafford from Ajax last summer, but he’s struggled to secure regular playing time.

Solskjaer seeks repeat of 1999 treble heroics in Liverpool FA Cup tie

He has made 21 appearances, but only two of those have been starts in the Premier League.

Van de Beek has seen the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Scott McTominay produce consistently solid performances, meaning he has been a frustrated spectator from the bench.

Red Devils boss Solskjaer has admitted the Netherlands international is not happy, but has backed him to come good at Old Trafford.

“I wouldn’t say that Donny is happy,” Solskjaer said. “Of course, he wants to play more, but he gets about his job in the right manner.

“We are doing well and have got players who are playing really well in his position.”

Solskjaer fashioned a reputation as a super-sub during his playing days at Old Trafford, and he can understand Van de Beek’s plight.

He reminds me a lot about myself, when I first came in, that he understands my difficulties and challenges.

“I was the same with Sir Alex [Ferguson, former Manchester United manager]. When he left me out I understood and I was happy for the team to win – and Donny is that type of guy.

“He knows he is important for us and knows he is going to play many games.

“He trusts his own quality. He is a quietly confident guy who deep down knows he is good enough and is just waiting for his opportunity.”

United face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday and Van de Beek will be hopeful of getting a chance to impress.

Pogba: Cavani gives United quality not offered by Martial or Rashford

Paul Pogba has said Edinson Cavani brings a dimension to the Manchester United squad that is not offered by Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford.

United are surprise pacesetters in the Premier League, with their 2-1 win at Fulham on Wednesday moving them two points clear at the top of the table.

Pogba scored the winner against the Cottagers, but it was Cavani who drew them level following Ademola Lookman’s early goal for Fulham.

Cavani arrived at the club as a 33-year-old who some felt was on the wane, but he has brought a predatory goal threat to the United attack – which Pogba felt was lacking.

“Everybody knows that Edi is a top-class striker and there’s few strikers like this in the world, and we had the chance to have one,” Pogba told MUTV. “We know the hardest goals are those goals.

“We have talented players – Anthony Martial, Rashy in front, even Mason [Greenwood], that they can shoot from outside and stuff – but they don’t have this, the experience of Edi, and they don’t have the same quality of Edi as well.

So I think we complete each other with the players we have in front and Edi can obviously show his class like he did. Those goals that we needed, at the right time, he’s always there at the right time and the right moment to help the team to win.”

While Manchester City are favourites to lift the title – with defending champions Liverpool in a slump – United sit at the top of the table.

The Red Devils’ unbeaten run in the Premier League stretches back to November 1, and following the FA Cup meeting with Liverpool on Sunday they host bottom of the table Sheffield United and will have high hopes of remaining at the summit heading into February.

Former Red Devil Wayne Rooney feels Cavani and Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes have turned United into genuine title contenders.

“The last few years, United haven’t been ready to challenge for the title, but now they’ve brought in players like Fernandes and Cavani – players with a winning mentality – that has helped massively,” Rooney said.

‘Doesn’t send the right message’ – Why Spurs should steer clear of Lingard

“Now the squad is challenging for a Premier League title. I said to the coaches in the office here six weeks ago I thought United will win the League. I still feel that today.

“Paul Pogba will have a massive part to play in that. Those players that have been brought in with winning mentalities will relieve some of the pressure from Paul a bit, and he can now show his quality on the pitch.”

Ferdinand: Pogba ‘one of the best’ when in form

Inspired Pogba must find consistency

Paul Pogba’s recent performances have been reminiscent of the player from Juventus: he is respectful, humble and is not looking for excuses. Suddenly he has become a team player again. He’s earning the right to play. However, let’s reserve judgement as we have been here before – Pogba needs to be consistently excellent; great players don’t play well the odd game, they have consistency.

Ferdinand: Pogba ‘one of the best’ when in form

However, this week, at least, Pogba has been – alongside Bruno Fernandes – United’s best player. If the season was over three games then great. It’s quite interesting that his level has spiked as United start to challenge at the top.

If he wants to leave, there’s no better place to showcase yourself than playing for a team that’s competing to win a league title. It is a win-win if Manchester United finish as champions and Pogba gets a move. In fact, he might have thought, ‘I need to change my attitude. If the team are playing well and challenging for the title and I’m not involved, then what good am I?’. Would clubs have spent money on Pogba the way things were going before Christmas?

In 2020 he was been playing in the shadow of Fernandes and that will have dented his ego too.

Pogba was signed for a big fee; his marketability and profile – as well as his playing ability – suited Manchester United. But the best profile you can ever have is to be an excellent footballer, and while Fernandes came in with a much lower profile, his status has outgrown Pogba’s and for the right reasons: he’s at the top of the tree for being brilliant.

And you can’t beat competition. In any industry, if competition comes along and you just sulk about it, then you’re not going to survive. You have to improve to get respect. Paul Ince was in a constant battle with Roy Keane to show who was the best central midfield player and in that 1993/94 season we won an FA Cup and Premier League title. Nothing beats competition.

Fernandes quickly became the key man when he arrived and it became Manchester United and Fernandes, not Pogba. It was Pogba before for the wrong reasons, now it’s Fernandes for goals and assists. United need that from Pogba now to challenge for the title, for him to not drop below a 7/10 in any game,

No one has won the league title yet, it’s only January.

United have an opportunity in the FA Cup against Liverpool, who are still beset by a few injuries. They are stretched, one or two of the young lads will have to come in at centre-back. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks he has a strong squad then use it. It is better to not have three holding players on the pitch, instead go and put players out there who are going to try to win a game of football.

United are on a great run, and are in a good place, but they can improve that by beating Liverpool. In three weeks’ time no one will care about what the teams were, but United should be able to say they beat Liverpool and are in the next round. The Red Devils can win it. The players will want it. Even under lockdown, you don’t want to be a United player around Manchester, having lost to Liverpool.

Ferdinand: Pogba 'one of the best' when in form

Paul Pogba is “one of the best” when in form says former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand after the French midfielder hit a stunning second-half winner to send his side back to the top of the table.

It was Pogba’s second winner in as many weeks after his goal against Burnley last weekend, and while Ferdinand believes there are still questions surrounding the 27-year-old’s place in central midfield, he believes that few can match the Frenchman on his day.

“I don’t think Ole completely trusts him in the centre of midfield with the pace that some sides counter with … but in this game they felt they would dominate and so he can allow him to do it,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“The big difference is that he is playing quick … the efficiency he is playing with is amazing. One of the best when he is in this form.”

Ferdinand also believes that Pogba’s ego will have “taken a battering” as fellow midfielder Bruno Fernandes soaked up the praise in 2020 along with four Player of the Month awards, all the while Pogba was struggling for regular first-team opportunities earlier in the season.

“He would’ve been jealous, his pride would’ve been hurt,” Ferdinand said.

“But he loves the game and wants to showcase his talent. If he’s got the platform, the players around him that allow him to thrive, he can do it.”
