Murray admits ‘risk’ in quick return from surgery at Wimbledon

Andy Murray remains determined to take to the court at Wimbledon on Tuesday against Tomas Machac, but admits that there are “risks” involved after undergoing spinal cyst removal surgery just eight days ago.

Murray has been public about his intention to retire after this summer’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games, meaning that this could well be his final opportunity to grace Wimbledon, a tournament where he has been twice champion.

However, after undergoing a surgical procedure to remove a cyst on his spine last weekend, Murray was initially doubtful that he would be capable of playing.

Following a practice session on Saturday, Murray confirmed to the media that he is planning to face Machac despite his physical condition.

Conceding that he is not at full strength, the three-time Grand Slam champion said: “Obviously, I haven’t done much for the last week… just trying to do what I can, trying to keep progressing each day. Whether there’s enough time or not, I don’t know, but I’m trying.”

Murray left no doubt though, underlining his intention to play: “There’s risks associated with what I’m trying to do and I’m willing to take that to try and play. So yeah, we’ll see what happens.”

‘I wish I hadn’t gone on the court’ – Murray regrets playing after suffering fresh injury

But Murray admitted too, that the decision is not entirely in his hands and he must wait to see how his body reacts.

He said: “I need to be able to move properly, which I can’t yet, so let’s see in 48 hours or so. I don’t know – tough to know how it’s going to progress, really.”

Awaiting Murray on Tuesday is world No. 36 Machac. The 23-year-old Czech right-hander has never before advanced beyond the first round at Wimbledon, and only once qualified for the tournament proper. In 2023, Machac was defeated in four sets by another Brit in Cam Norrie.

She said: “I think for a tournament like Wimbledon, especially, you’ll push your body, you’ll push your recovery to the maximum. You’ll take the consequences that will come after or during, whatever you have to do.

“I think you will just absolutely push yourself to the maximum, and push the people around you to also be at their best. I’m very happy to see him here because when I think of Wimbledon, I think of Andy.

“Growing up, that was the generation, the hero I would look up to. I think it just feels right, and I really hope that, yeah, Tuesday or whenever he’s playing, that he’s on the match court.”

Wimbledon has been Murray’s favourite Grand Slam tournament in terms of results, having won two of his three career majors at the All-England Club.

After three consecutive semi-final exits from 2009-2011, he reached the final in 2012 only to lose to Roger Federer. The following year, Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to claim the title. He added his second in 2016, defeating Milos Raonic.

Since that victory, Murray has only advanced beyond the third round once as injuries have taken their toll.

Ireland’s Garry extends unbeaten streak with unanimous win over Page

Ian Machado Garry said “patience was the key” to victory over Michael ‘Venom’ Page after his unanimous points victory at UFC 303 in Las Vegas.

Dubliner Garry, who extended his unbeaten record to 15-0, showcased his versatility in taking a 29-28 win on all three cards – as he won the first and third rounds with grappling.

Usually relying on his quick and powerful striking, against a point fighter with quicker hands and feet, Garry was close to turning out the lights of his opponent in the first round as he locked in a choke hold after taking Page down to the mat.

The second round, which saw mostly stand-up action, went the way of the Londoner who landed a number of right hands with Garry unable to land many blows.

With all to play for in the final five minutes, Garry locked a body triangle early in the round and then got position on Page’s back with a head lock for the second half of it.

Complimentary about his defeated rival, Garry said on TNT Sports: “He did a great, great game plan today. Tonight was an awesome fight.”

The Dubliner insisted that patience was the decisive factor.

He explained: “Nothing surprised me. I knew how good he was, how talented he was. For me, it was patience. Patience was the key today. Today was patience.”

Continuing, Garry set his sights on higher ambitions: “The future is inevitable and I’m coming for this belt. I’m coming for that world title. I don’t care who’s next. I’m going to be a world champion.”

In the final fight of the evening’s action, Alex Pereira’s legend continued to grow with a devastating second-round technical knockout victory over Jiri Prochazka.

The rematch from the fight in November, which saw the same result, was a much more one-sided affair with Pereira tagging Prochazka repeatedly in the first round, before landing a left hook on the buzzer which would have ended the bout if it had come just a few seconds earlier.

Lindgren storms to SGP win in Gorzow, Zmarzlik extends championship lead

Fredrik Lindgren took his first win of the season in Gorzow, beating Bartosz Zmarzlik to the trophy.

Championship leader Zmarzlik dominated proceedings early on on the grippy track, but as the surface started to get more slick, Lindgren as well as the Danish duo of Leon Madsen and Mikkel Michelsen started coming into their own.

The quartet lined up for the final where Zmarzlik took the holeshot at tapes up with Michelsen shadowing him. However, Lindgren committed to a brave line round the outside near the fence to shoot into runner-up spot.

Havertz and Musiala send Germany into quarter-final after eventful win over Denmark

Host nation Germany progressed into the Euro 2024 quarter-final thanks to a second half Kai Havertz penalty, and a second goal from Jamal Musiala.

However, Denmark will feel aggrieved about their exit after Joachim Andersen thought he had given his country a 48th minute lead, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.

Just two minutes after seeing his goal chalked off, Andersen was then judged by VAR to have handled a cross into the box and Havertz dispatched the spot kick.

Rasmus Hojlund had several good chances in both halves and was denied an equaliser after capitalising on a defensive error but firing at goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Germany sealed their quarter-final spot as Nico Schlotterbeck sent a floated ball into the path of Musiala who calmly fired home.

The home nation could have added to the score-line late on, but were met by a determined Kasper Schmeichel performance.

Germany will now face either Spain or Georgia in the quarter-final.
