O’Sullivan suffers early Championship League exit, but Lisowski advances

Ronnie O’Sullivan lost his Group 2 decider to He Guoqiang at the Championship League in Leicester on Tuesday to suffer an early exit at the season’s first ranking event.

The seven-time world champion produced breaks of 72 and two 53s in a 3-0 win over Kayden Brierley, but was held to a 2-2 draw by Mitchell Mann leaving him needing a win over He to secure his progress to the last 32.

But it was last season’s rookie of the year who held his nerve to produce breaks of 80, 57 and 77 in a 3-0 win at the Mattioli Arena that catapulted him top of Group 2. a point ahead of Mann and two clear of O’Sullivan.

Elsewhere, Jack Lisowski enjoyed a dominant performance in winning Group 12 as a run of 138 saw him defeat Anton Kazakov 3-0 before further knocks of 127 and 106 helped him dump Jiang Jun 3-1.

A 2-2 draw with Mark Davis in his final group outing was enough to see him end the day on seven points, two clear of Davis.

The action continues on Wednesday with Ali Carter, Zhou Yuelong, Fan Zhengyi and Mink Nutcharut chasing a spot in the last 32.

Stage one consists of 32 groups of four players. The eight group winners contest a further two groups with the winners meeting in the final.

There is £33,000 on the table for the winner plus a spot in the Champion of Champions later in the year which is worth another £12,500 for qualifying.

England top group but fail to score in uninspiring draw, Slovenia through

England have won Group C at Euro 2024 after a goalless draw with Slovenia which will do little to quell the negativity and question marks shrouding Gareth Southgate’s team.

Bukayo Saka had a goal disallowed in a stale first half – after Phil Foden was clearly offside before crossing him the ball – but such openings were rare and it took until the 30th minute for England to even register a shot on goal.

The introduction of Kobbie Mainoo at the interval, in place of Conor Gallagher, did bring a little more speed to England’s passing, but they still lacked urgency and could not break down a disciplined and diligent Slovenia team who knew a point would be enough to take them through to the knockout rounds.

Slovenia dug in for that draw towards the end, rather than pushing for what have been a first-ever win at a European Championship, making England’s task even harder. Substitute Cole Palmer did have a good chance in added time, but shot too close to the goalkeeper.

England’s last-16 opponents are yet to be confirmed, with the Netherlands a strong possibility. They are however now on the opposite side of the draw to Germany, Spain, Portugal and France, so cannot meet any of those sides until the final.

Talking Point – New midfield, same stale England

Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s only change, but it did not have the desired effect. England moved the ball slowly and none of Gallagher, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham were able to dictate the flow of the game.

That Gallagher was removed at the break for Kobbie Mainoo shows Southgate’s displeasure and it is safe to assume that experiment is over.

Things did pick up, briefly, after Mainoo’s arrival. He was busier than Gallagher, gave England a semblance of a spark and may well have played his way into the starting line-up for England’s last-16 tie. Yet even the second half left a lot to be desired and it increasingly looks like the system, rather than personnel, may be England’s real problem. Palmer, like Mainoo, was bright off the bench and may also now be in contention to start a knockout game on Sunday.

Player of the Match – Phil Foden (England)

Foden’s movement was by some margin the most incisive of England’s forward players. The debate will rumble on about England’s left flank, but Foden demonstrated his value to the team, regardless of what position he’s playing, tonight.

Player Ratings

England: Pickford 6, Walker 5, Stones 6, Guehi 6, Trippier 5, Rice 5, Gallagher 4, Saka 4, Bellingham 4, Foden 7, Kane 5. Subs: Mainoo 7, Palmer 6, Alexander-Arnold n/a, Gordon n/a.

Slovenia: Oblak 7, Karnicnik 7, Drkusic 6, Bijol 7, Janza 7, Stojanovic 6, Cerin 6, Elsnik 5, Mlakar 5, Sporar 6, Sesko 6. Subs: Ilicic 5, Celar n/a, Stankovic n/a, Balkovec

Match Highlights

CHANCE! 5′ – A deep cross from the left is headed back into the England box, where Sesko has a free header, but there is little pace on the ball and Pickford saves quite comfortably.

DISALLOWED GOAL! 31′ – Foden makes a darting run from the left and Rice finds him with a first-time pass, but Foden went just to early. He squares for Saka to tap in, but the flag is up and the goal will not count.

SAVE! 35′ – Foden strikes a free kick well, arrowing towards the top corner, but Oblak saves without having to dive. Most were expecting a cross given how far out it was but the goalkeeper was not caught out.

SAVE! 90+2′ – A good chance for England late on as Kane unselfishly flicks the ball on to Palmer, cutting in from the right and unmarked, but his low shot is too close to Oblak.

Denmark progress to last 16 after tense goalless draw with Serbia

Denmark progressed to the Euro 2024 Round of 16 after a tense goalless draw against Serbia, who exited the tournament.

Though Serbia needed a win to progress, they mustered not a single shot in a first half of limited entertainment.

Denmark, meanwhile, knew they’d progress with a draw but still pursued victory – they were just unable to create anything clear cut, snatching at the various half-chances that came their way.

Both managers made various changes in the second half in an effort to up the pace and quality, and Dusan Tadic certainly made a difference to Serbia, skimming in a series of crosses, but his strikers couldn’t convert them.

Denmark, though, move on to face the hosts in Dortmund – what an occasion that will be – and if they can find just a little more creative spark, they could threaten a shock.

Denmark ended as runners-up behind England, who drew 0-0 with Slovenia to end as group winners.

Superb Sabitzer strike seals top spot for Austria after five-goal thriller

Twice the Netherlands pegged Austria back but Marcel Sabitzer’s 80th minute winner secured Ralf Rangnick’s side top spot in Group D with a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Beginning the match in third place, Austria’s final spot is just reward for a victory which was created by the intensity they played with from the first whistle.

They were justly rewarded for the strange opener which came when Donyell Malen put the ball in his own net, but Ronald Koeman moving full back Lutsharel Geertruida into midfield at half time changed the game and after Cody Gakpo’s goal levelled matters they could easily have taken the lead.

The character of this Austrian side was shown by them riding out this storm to take the lead on the hour mark from Romano Schmid and then once more from the captain Sabitzer, when many sides would have lost heart following Memphis Depay’s equaliser, which was strangely disallowed initially.

The win means Austria top Group D on six points, followed by France on five and the Netherlands, guaranteed a third-place finish on four.
