England top group but fail to score in uninspiring draw, Slovenia through

England have won Group C at Euro 2024 after a goalless draw with Slovenia which will do little to quell the negativity and question marks shrouding Gareth Southgate’s team.

Bukayo Saka had a goal disallowed in a stale first half – after Phil Foden was clearly offside before crossing him the ball – but such openings were rare and it took until the 30th minute for England to even register a shot on goal.

The introduction of Kobbie Mainoo at the interval, in place of Conor Gallagher, did bring a little more speed to England’s passing, but they still lacked urgency and could not break down a disciplined and diligent Slovenia team who knew a point would be enough to take them through to the knockout rounds.

Slovenia dug in for that draw towards the end, rather than pushing for what have been a first-ever win at a European Championship, making England’s task even harder. Substitute Cole Palmer did have a good chance in added time, but shot too close to the goalkeeper.

England’s last-16 opponents are yet to be confirmed, with the Netherlands a strong possibility. They are however now on the opposite side of the draw to Germany, Spain, Portugal and France, so cannot meet any of those sides until the final.

Talking Point – New midfield, same stale England

Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s only change, but it did not have the desired effect. England moved the ball slowly and none of Gallagher, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham were able to dictate the flow of the game.

That Gallagher was removed at the break for Kobbie Mainoo shows Southgate’s displeasure and it is safe to assume that experiment is over.

Things did pick up, briefly, after Mainoo’s arrival. He was busier than Gallagher, gave England a semblance of a spark and may well have played his way into the starting line-up for England’s last-16 tie. Yet even the second half left a lot to be desired and it increasingly looks like the system, rather than personnel, may be England’s real problem. Palmer, like Mainoo, was bright off the bench and may also now be in contention to start a knockout game on Sunday.

Player of the Match – Phil Foden (England)

Foden’s movement was by some margin the most incisive of England’s forward players. The debate will rumble on about England’s left flank, but Foden demonstrated his value to the team, regardless of what position he’s playing, tonight.

Player Ratings

England: Pickford 6, Walker 5, Stones 6, Guehi 6, Trippier 5, Rice 5, Gallagher 4, Saka 4, Bellingham 4, Foden 7, Kane 5. Subs: Mainoo 7, Palmer 6, Alexander-Arnold n/a, Gordon n/a.

Slovenia: Oblak 7, Karnicnik 7, Drkusic 6, Bijol 7, Janza 7, Stojanovic 6, Cerin 6, Elsnik 5, Mlakar 5, Sporar 6, Sesko 6. Subs: Ilicic 5, Celar n/a, Stankovic n/a, Balkovec

Match Highlights

CHANCE! 5′ – A deep cross from the left is headed back into the England box, where Sesko has a free header, but there is little pace on the ball and Pickford saves quite comfortably.

DISALLOWED GOAL! 31′ – Foden makes a darting run from the left and Rice finds him with a first-time pass, but Foden went just to early. He squares for Saka to tap in, but the flag is up and the goal will not count.

SAVE! 35′ – Foden strikes a free kick well, arrowing towards the top corner, but Oblak saves without having to dive. Most were expecting a cross given how far out it was but the goalkeeper was not caught out.

SAVE! 90+2′ – A good chance for England late on as Kane unselfishly flicks the ball on to Palmer, cutting in from the right and unmarked, but his low shot is too close to Oblak.

Serbia stay alive after Jovic scores last-second equaliser against Slovenia

Luka Jovic’s late equaliser snatched a point for Serbia in their Euro 2024 Group C clash as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Slovenia in Munich.

Zan Karnicnik had opened the scoring for Slovenia midway through the second period as he arrived at the back post to tuck home and round off an excellent team move.

Matjaz Kek’s side looked like they were going to cling on to a crucial three points but Luka Jovic’s remarkable header from a corner in the 96th minute equalised for Serbia in the final action of the game.

It was another thrilling contest with both sides hitting the woodwork throughout the match and playing pulsating end-to-end football.

This result now leaves Slovenia on two points and Serbia just one point behind them as they head into their final group games where they will face England and Denmark respectively.

It was Slovenia who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening period as Timi Max Elsnik’s thunderous effort from just outside the box struck the right post.

Aleksandar Mitrovic went closest for Serbia in the first-half but it was shortly after the break when the former Fulham man found himself with a clear opening as Dusan Tadic played him in on goal, but Jan Oblak did excellently to smother his chipped effort.

It was in the 69th minute when Slovenia eventually broke the deadlock as right-back Karnicnik’s half-volleyed effort at the back post finished the move he started with a driving run from deep.

Dragan Stojkovic’s side nearly found an instant equaliser as Mitrovic rattled the crossbar with an effort from close range but they left it until the 96th minute to finally break Slovenia down through Jovic’s superb header directed into the bottom left corner.

The former Real Madrid man’s goal means Serbia can still finish in the top two of the group with a result against Denmark while Slovenia will now need a result against England after being on the brink of qualification.

Talking point – Jovic breaks Slovenian hearts in last kick of the game

Coming into this fixture, Jovic was perhaps an unlikely source of Serbia’s opening goal of Euro 2024 given the talent they possess up front.

But it was a frustrating afternoon for Mitrovic who hit the woodwork, missed from close range and was denied well by Oblak.

As for Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, he had a couple of sighters in the opening period but it was largely a performance spent on the periphery of proceedings.

For Jovic, whose career has not gone the way it was once expected when he was snapped up by Madrid, he will perhaps be hoping for a place in the starting eleven against Denmark after effectively keeping Serbia’s hopes of qualification alive.

With Stojkovic once again opting for two centre forwards, the Serbia manager may consider his options ahead of Tuesday’s clash.

Player of the Match – Zan Karnicnik (Slovenia)

Despite Jovic’s heroics, Karnicnik’s goal, which he started and finished, was the cherry on top of a wonderful performance. The right-back was resolute in his defending and crucially intervened moments after breaking the deadlock to divert Mitrovic’s goal-bound effort onto the crossbar. His marauding run drew a foul and yellow card for Filip Mladenovic who was withdrawn at half-time.

Player Ratings

Slovenia: Oblak 7. Karnicnik 9*, Drkusic 7, Bijol 7, Janza 8. Stojanovic 7, Gnezda Cerin 7, Elsnik 8, Mlakar 7. Sporar 6, Sesko 7. Subs: Stankovic 6, Verbic 5, Vipotnik 5, Brekalo N/A.

Serbia: Rajkovic 6, Veljkovic 6, Milenkovic 6, Pavlovic 7. Zivkovic 7, Ilic 6, Tadic 8, Lukic 7, Mladenovic 5. Vlahovic 6, Mitrovic 8. Subs: Gacinovic 5, Jovic 8, Milinkovic-Savic 6, Birmancevic 6, Samardzic 5.

Match Highlights

38′ – SLOVENIA HIT THE POST! The ball drops to Elsnik, who plays an unintentional one-two with a Serbia man before unleashing an effort that rattles the right-hand post.

49′ – SERBIA’S BEST CHANCE: Mitrovic plays an excellent one-two with Tadic who slips the big striker in on goal but as he looks to chip it over the onrushing Oblak, the Slovenian keeper saves well

69′ – GOAL! SLOVENIA 1-0 SERBIA (Karnicnik): Karnicnik switches the ball out to Elsnik on the left hand-side who delivers the cross to the back post where the right-back is arriving to strike home on the half-volley.

72′ – MITROVIC HITS THE BAR: Mitrovic holds off Karnicnik to meet the ball on the half-volley but the Slovenian defender gets the smallest of touches on it to send it crashing onto the crossbar.

90+6′ – GOAL! SLOVENIA 1-1 SERBIA (Luka Jovic): An inswinging corner came in from the right and Luka Jovic rose highest to direct a corner into the bottom left corner.

Eriksen strike in vain as Denmark pegged back by Slovenia

Christian Eriksen capped a fairytale return to the European Championship stage with a sublime goal but Denmark were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia in their Group C opener in Stuttgart.

The Manchester United midfielder marked 1,100 days since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch at Euro 2020 by opening the scoring with a smart finish on 17 minutes.

The Danes dominated for long spells with both Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund going close to extending their advantage.

Slovenia eventually grew as an attacking force and after highly-rated Benjamin Sesko hit the woodwork, they drew level 13 minutes from time through Erik Janza’s deflected drive.

Next up for these two sides in Group C, Serbia face Slovenia on Thursday evening followed by Denmark’s clash with England.

Talking Point – The Christian Eriksen story is one to make every football fan smile

This was almost a case of fate. It just had to be him, didn’t it, as Eriksen’s journey from the cardiac arrest in that Euro 2020 opener against Finland came full circle with both a majestic appearance and a fine goal three years on.

The 32-year-old has played at the World Cup since recovering to resume his professional career thanks to his implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), but there was a poignancy to him returning to this particular tournament and taking centre stage for his country once again.

In his homeland, the previous Euro tournament was being dubbed as the one where an Eriksen in his prime would lead Denmark to something special. Sadly for him, it was far from that and he had to watch on, thinking his career was over, as his teammates battled to the semi finals and an extra-time defeat to England.

The Danes, who also upset football aristocracy when they won the Euros in 1992, remain an unlikely bet to go that far again and this result could yet damage their hopes. However, they have scraped out of groups before and with Eriksen finding another gear or two for his country, you can never truly rule out another deep run.

Player of the match

Christian Eriksen (Denmark). It would be easy to hand the Man United playmaker the award for scoring in such emotional circumstances. The reality is that he was the game’s most inventive force and was at the centre of his country’s best moments, particularly in the first 45.

Player ratings

DENMARK: Schmeichel 7, Vestergaard 7, Andersen 7, Christensen 7, Hjulmand 7, Hojbjerg 7, Kristiansen 7, Bah 7, Eriksen 8*, Hojlund 7, Wind 8. Subs: Maehle 6, Poulsen n/a, Dolberg n/a, Norgaard n/a, Delaney n/a.

SLOVENIA: Oblak 8, Karnicnik 7, Janza 8, Bijol 8, Drkusic 7, Cerin 7, Elsnik 7, Mlakar 7, Stojanovic 7, Sporar 7, Sesko 7. Subs: Verbic 7, Stankovic 6, Celar 6, Brekalo n/a, Kurtic n/a.

Match Highlights

17’ – GOAL! – Denmark 1-0 Slovenia: (Eriksen). Jonas Wind flicks a long throw from the right into the path of Eriksen who chests it down before firing a half volley into the far corner.

43’ – DENMARK CHANCE! Wind works his way down the left and slides a lovely cut back to the unmarked Eriksen who contrives to blaze a 15-yard effort way over the bar.

65’ – DENMARK CHANCE! Oblak makes a point-blank save to deny Hojlund from close-in after Victor Kristiansen had teased a wonderful ball into the six-yard box from the left.

67’ – SLOVENIA CHANCE! Cerin arrives late to meet Sporar’s lovely cross from the left but can only guide his header wide of the far post.

76’ – SLOVENIA CHANCE! Sesko picks up a loose ball and thumps a stunning 25-yard shot against the far post.

77’ – GOAL! – Denmark 1-1 Slovenia: (Janza). A right-wing corner falls for Erik Janza who lets rip from 25 yards with a stinging effort that takes a deflection and flies past Schmeichel.
