24 Hours of Le Mans – LIVE – Toyota lead on Sunday morning as Porsche challenge for P1

In short: not an awful lot. The safety car came out and stayed out for four and a half hours with the rain coming down heavily. When the safety car retired around an hour ago, near enough the whole field pitted straight away for a new set of wet tyres.

Good morning and thank you for joining our live text coverage of Sunday at the Le Mans 24 hours race. We left last night with the #8 Toyota in the lead and they still hold the front of the race after a lenghty safety car last night. However, the #6 Porsche is marginally quicker at the moment and with the track now drying, pit stops and tyre swaps are imminent. Who will be at the top and claim the trophy in 17 hours from now?

Zmarzlik stars to seal first Speedway GP win of 2024

World Championship leader Bartosz Zmarzlik extended his lead at the top of the SGP Standings with victory in Round 5 in Sweden.

It looked like the event could be cancelled with torrential rain delaying the start by almost two hours.

After a poor first race, Zmarzlik changed his bike and in Heat 9 produced the only win of the night from Gate 9.

Jack Holder was the leader after the 20 heats but was beaten by countryman Max Fricke in the first semi-final, while Zmarzlik beat Robert Lambert in a fantastic race in the second.

Opting to start from Gate 2, Zmarzlik was beaten to the first bend by Fricke but went wide and took the lead in the second lap and after a brief change of lead held on to win his first Grand Prix of the season.

The win sees Zmarzlik extend his lead to 18 points over second-place Holder in the season standings.

Italy edge to opening victory despite conceding fastest ever Euros goal

Holders Italy conceded the fastest goal in European Championship history but recovered to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Albania in their Group B opener in Dortmund.

Sylvinho’s Balkan minnows sent shockwaves through the tournament inside 23 seconds when Nedim Bajrami capitalised upon an error to fire home at the near post.

The Azzurri responded through Alessandro Bastoni’s header before Nicolo Barella’s wonderful first-time strike turned it around with just 16 minutes on the clock.

Brentford shot-stopper Thomas Strakosha then tipped Davide Frattesi’s dink on to the post and was alert to keep out Gianluca Scamacca as Luciano Spalletti’s men pushed for the third.

Italy continued to dominate following the interval but could not add to their margin of victory and were almost made to pay in stoppage time when substitute Rey Manaj clipped just wide.

The win sees Italy assume second spot in Group B behind leaders Spain on goal difference. Albania are third with Croatia bottom after the first fixtures in the pool.

Next up, Albania meet Croatia on Wednesday afternoon while Spain face Italy on Thursday.

Talking Point – More to come from Italy after scare

The pre-tournament talk was about reigning champions Italy having low expectations given the rebuild under Spalletti and there was certainly cause for alarm when Albania made mid-match headlines with a historic early strike.

The underdogs are the second lowest-ranked side in the competition but got off to a flyer and may feel they should have taken more risks in the latter stages with just the one goal in it.

To their credit, Italy responded quickly to the instant setback and controlled the majority of the match, particularly with the pressure on after Spain lay down an early marker with their win over Croatia earlier in the day.

La Roja are next up for the holders and that may well decide who tops the group. Italy looked impressive but perhaps need to offer more potency in attack. Indeed, the performance and result against Spain will provide a better barometer of where The Azzurri stand going forward.

Player of the match

Nicolo Barella (Italy). The Inter midfielder pulled the strings at the heart of the side and demonstrated just how important his fitness is to their hopes. Capped a superb showing with a wonderful goal and barely put a foot wrong.

Spain start Euro 2024 with a bang as Croatia outclassed

Spain kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win over Croatia in Group B as Lamine Yamal became the youngest player to feature in the history of the competition.

After a tepid opening 25 minutes, La Roja broke the deadlock when Alvaro Morata raced clear before producing a composed finish.

Four minutes later, they doubled their lead when Fabian Ruiz bamboozled the opposition with some sharp footwork before lashing the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

That sparked Croatia into action and Josko Gvardiol came close to scoring. But on the stroke of half time they fell behind further when Yamal, aged 16 years and 338 days old, produced a brilliant cross which was converted by Dani Carvajal for his first international goal.

Zlatko Dalic’s side were unlucky not to reduce their deficit in the second period with Josip Stanisic’s shot was cleared off the line by Marc Cucurella and the rebound was saved by Unai Simon.

Croatia then thought they had scored late on after they were awarded a penalty when Rodri brought down Bruno Petkovic after a mistake by Simon.

Petkovic’s spot-kick was saved but he converted the rebound, however VAR disallowed the goal for encroachment in the box by Ivan Perisic.

TALKING POINT

In a difficult group with the reigning champions Italy, Spain got off to an ideal start against tricky opposition. Three first half goals, three different goalscorers, a job well done from Luis de la Fuente’s side. But they were not tested defensively by Croatia and it will be interesting to see how the 2008 and 2012 Euro winners fare against better teams.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Lamine Yamal (Spain): After a nervy start, the Barcelona man’s pace and trickery was too much for the Croatian defence to handle. The 16-year-old was involved in Ruiz’s goal and also assisted Carvajal’s goal with a brilliant swinging cross.

PLAYER RATINGS

CROATIA: Livakovic 6, Stanisic 6, Sutalo 5, Pongracic 5, Gvardiol 6; Modric 6, Brozovic 5, Kovacic 6; Majer 6, Budamir 6, Kramaric 5. Subs: Perisic 5, Pasalic 5, Sucic 5, Petkovic n/a.

SPAIN: Simon 8, Carvajal 7, Le Normand 7, Nacho 7, Cucurella 7, Pedri 6, Rodri 6, Fabian 7, Yamal 8, Morata 7, Williams 6. Subs: Olmo 4, Oyarazabal 5, Merino 5, Zubimendi n/a, Torres n/a.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

28′ – GOAL FOR SPAIN! Rodri threads it through to Morsata who coolly runs towards the box and slots it low past the keeper.

32′ – GOAL FOR SPAIN! Pedri lays it across to Ruiz who jinks inside and out before lashing a low shot into the botto mcorner from the edge of the box. Lovely strike.

45’+2 – GOAL FOR SPAIN! Carvajal converts Yamal’s cross on the volley from close range to make it 3-0!

55′ – SO CLOSE FOR CROATIA! Stanisic’s shot is cleared off the line by Cucurella, the rebound is kept out by Simon. I have no idea how Croatia have not scored there.

79′ – DISALLOWED GOAL FOR CROATIA! Petkovic’s penalty is well saved but he converts the rebound after the ball is squared to him. But after a VAR review, it is disallowed for encroachment in the box.

KEY STAT

Alvaro Morata becomes the third top scorer in the history of the Euros with seven goals. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (14) and Michel Platini (9) have scored more.
