Gio Savarese happy with Portland Timbers performance despite Open Cup exit to LAFC

Given the number of changes to the starting XI, it was always going to be difficult for the Portland Timbers to pull off a result away to LAFC in the US Open Cup on Tuesday.

In the end, Portland went down 2-0 at Banc of California Stadium thanks to goals from Cristian Arango and Mamadou Fall either side of half-time.

But the scoreline only tells half the story, with the Timbers attempting 16 shots to LAFC‘s 14, with six of them forcing saves from Black and Gold stopper Maxime Crepeau. The Canadian goalkeeper’s presence between the sticks was emblematic of how strong a side LA head coach Steve Cherundolo fielded on the night.

Portland, meanwhile, rested a number of key figures, with the likes of Sebastian Blanco, Yimmi Chara, and Cristhian Paredes only coming on from the bench to try and salvage the game. Victor Griffith was among the players to come up from Portland Timbers 2, while David Ayala and Justin Rasmussen have only managed limited minutes in MLS play this season.

Despite the round of 32 defeat, Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese left California happy with the efforts of his patchwork side.

“If you watch the match, you will see how well we played,” he said. “A good performance from a lot of new players that haven’t trained enough with us, guys that came from T2 like (Victor) Griffith and Julian Bravo.

“Nathan (Fogaça) that is part of the first team now. David Ayala who hasn’t played a lot of minutes. I thought very good performances today, and I think it says a lot when the man of the match is the goalkeeper on the other side.”

Another first-team regular to come off the bench was Jaroslaw Niezgoda, who has three goals in 11 MLS appearances so far this season. The Polish striker came on in the 67th minute to give Portland more attacking impetus but in the 88th, he left the field with an apparent groin injury.

The Timbers are already short up front with Felipe Mora sidelined due to a knee injury, so supporters were understandably concerned about seeing Niezgoda limp out.

Savarese is still in the dark about the severity of the injury, but is hopeful of having Niezgoda back for Portland’s home tie against Sporting Kansas City at the weekend.

“It seems that he pulled — a little bit — his groin,” he said. “He felt a little something and decided to come out. Now it will be evaluated if it’s difficult or severe. So we now have to look at it and hopefully, he can bounce back and be ready for this weekend.”

'Like playing in the Colosseum' – Tsitsipas saves two match points before overcoming Dimitrov

Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas survived a scare to make it through to the last 16 of the Italian Open after an engrossing three-set win over Grigor Dimitrov.

Going into the match, Tsitsipas held the wood over Dimitrov having defeated the Bulgarian in the last month in both Barcelona and Madrid.

Those matches were more straightforward than this encounter at the Foro Italico though, with Dimitrov seeing two match points go astray at 5-4 up in the third.

And as the pair went into their final-set tie-break, Tsitsipas once again came up with the goods when he needed to and booked his place in the last 16, where he will meet Karen Khachanov.

“It’s like playing in the Colosseum,” Tsitsipas said afterwards.

“There’s so much energy coming from the crowd. The people that came and watched the match were so into it, more than us I think.

“And it gave for a great atmosphere and a great gladiator environment on the court.”

Dimitrov has been resurgent this season with a run to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and a semi-final appearance in Monte-Carlo.

But he had struggled to find a way to overcome Tsitsipas this term, and the Greek appeared keen to keep his spotless 2022 head-to-head record against Dimitrov intact early on, racing into a 3-0 lead that ultimately set the tone for the first set, Tsitsipas taking it 6-3.

Tsitsipas – having broken in the seventh game of the second set – then looked like he was going to sprint to a third consecutive straight-sets triumph over Dimitrov, but the Bulgarian broke back at 4-5 down before breaking again at 6-5 to level things up at one set all.

That set up a decider, and it was nip and tuck all the way as the pair ended up at a tie-break. Unfortunately for Dimitrov he went off the boil at just the wrong moment, losing the first five points.

He clawed it back to 6-4 but Tsitsipas got over the line, throwing his arms aloft after sealing victory in 2h37.

There was a shock over on Pietrangeli on Wednesday, as Marcos Giron beat 2020 finalist Diego Schwartzman 6-1 7-6 to progress.

Elsewhere Alex de Minaur beat Tommy Paul, Alexander Zverev saw off Sebastian Baez and Khachanov defeated 15th seed Pablo Carreno Busta.

Arsenal step up pursuit of Bologna talent Hickey

Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their attempts to sign Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey, fighting competition from Napoli and Newcastle United.

The Scotland international turns 20 next month and was snapped up from Hearts in September 2020 for €1.7m.

It has been a breakthrough campaign for him in Serie A, scoring a personal best five Serie A goals in 34 games this season, along with an assist.

Hickey is under contract at the Stadio Dall’Ara until June 2024.

According to The Mirror newspaper, Arsenal are eager to get there ahead of the chasing pack and get a deal done with Bologna as soon as possible.

He is being called the new Gareth Bale for his attacking prowess on the left wing.

The asking price is currently in the region of €20m and rising with every strong performance he puts in for the Serie A side.

Hickey could continue his Serie A career at Napoli, who have qualified for the 2022-23 Champions League, or go to the Premier League for Arsenal or Newcastle United.

Steve Parish confirms Crystal Palace want to re-sign Conor Gallagher

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has confirmed that the club would like to bring Conor Gallagher back to the club when his loan spell expires at the end of the season.

Gallagher has enjoyed a terrific campaign at Selhurst Park, registering eight goals and three assists – form that has led to him breaking into the England squad ahead of the World Cup later this year.

The Chelsea midfielder also recently won the Eagles’ player of the season award, with Parish jokingly suggesting that the club’s supporters have a ‘whip round’ to pay for his transfer fee at the ceremony on Tuesday evening.

The Palace chairman has now fleshed out these tongue-in-cheek remarks, saying: “Conor’s future and that decision lies not with us but with him and Chelsea. They’re the people that have to decide.

“Once they decide what their choice is, they know where we are and what we want. We’re not going to pretend any different but we’ve got to respect them as a football club because he’s their player.

“At the end of the season he goes back to Chelsea and they’ll make their decision. Based on that, we’ll be there and if everybody thinks it’s the right thing for him to come back then we would love it.

“If it doesn’t work out, we wish him all the best as well.”

Listen now to 90min’s brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. On this week’s agenda is Erling Haaland’s transfer to Manchester City, Ralf Rangnick recommending Konrad Laimer to Manchester United and the latest on the contract situations of Youri Tielemans and Sadio Mane.

Parish added that if Palace could not re-sign Gallagher – either permanently or on loan – they would look at alternative targets.

“Obviously with Conor, we’ve got to see what we can do there. He’s going back and we’ve got to either replace him or see if we can get him back,” he said.

“We’ve got one or two other situations that are well-documented so keeping what we’ve got here is an important thing. Then we’ve got one or two ideas of where we think we can add to make a difference, give ourselves something different, get even better at keeping the ball and be a bit more damaging when we’ve got it.

“There’s no limit to our ambition at the football club. We’ll obviously look to bring some of the youngsters through that we’ve got who are very good and we start every year dreaming of being Leicester.”

Watford confirm Rob Edwards to become head coach from start of 2022/23 season

Watford have announced the appointment of Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards as their new head coach ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Hornets have already been relegated from the Premier League and will return to the Championship after just one year back in the top flight.

Current boss Roy Hodgson recently confirmed that he will step down and head back into retirement at the end of the season, and Watford have revealed Edwards as his successor.

“Watford Football Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Edwards as its new Head Coach, effective after the conclusion of the current 2021/22 season,” a statement read.

“Rob had a contractual provision allowing him to leave Forest Green Rovers at any time to discuss employment opportunities at other clubs and the Hornets are delighted to confirm our discussions concluded today.”

The second line of Watford’s statement is in reference to Forest Green Rovers’ unhappy public reaction to Edwards’ departure, insisting that negotiations took place behind their backs and that the Hornets were ‘giving football a bad name’.

Edwards led Rovers to the League Two title for the first time in their history in his only season in charge at The New Lawn.

Fiorentina hit back at Mourinho and Roma: ‘Why create controversy?’

Fiorentina director Joe Barone hit back at Roma coach Jose Mourinho after complaints about the refereeing. ‘Why create controversy where it doesn’t exist? That was a penalty.’

Mourinho was furious with the officials, particularly the VAR, after a 2-0 Giallorossi defeat at the Stadio Franchi on Monday evening.

The issue at the centre of the discussion is the penalty awarded to Fiorentina after four minutes for a Rick Karsdorp challenge on Nico Gonzalez.

“That was a penalty and we all saw it perfectly well, it was a great performance and the result is fair,” Barone told reporters.

“Why create controversy where it doesn’t exist? VAR works very well, Italian football represents one of the models in world football on that score.”

The contact from Karsdorp on Gonzalez was minimal, leading some to suggest VAR should not have intervened for an on-field review.

‘My time has come’ – Nibali will not ride Giro again as retirement plans revealed

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan) admits this will be his final Giro d’Italia as he revealed his plans to retire at the end of the season.

The two-time champion has wowed cycling fans with ambitious and punchy moves throughout his career, which have propelled him to seven stage wins at his home Grand Tour.

While he has enjoyed immense success in Italy, his crowning achievement came at the 2014 Tour de France when he won the yellow jersey.

‘The Shark is drowning!’ – Nibali, Dumoulin crumble on Etna as Giro explodes into life

The announcement increases the likelihood of ‘Shark’ attacks at this year’s Giro as he pursues stage wins after his GC ambitions evaporated on Mount Etna on Stage 4.

“This is my last Giro d’Italia, I leave cycling at the end of the season,” said Nibali.

“My time has come, and it’s normal. Sometimes it seems a bit like that, but decisions come like this, I was waiting for this stage to say it.

“Here I started running, racing in Sicily, Etna, from here it was an escalation.

“I have given so much to cycling and perhaps the time has come to return the time dedicated to two wheels to my family.”

‘Winning can be addictive’ – Nibali on his Giro memories ahead of potential farewell

Nibali is one of just seven riders to win all three Grand Tours, having also won La Vuelta in 2010.

The 37-year-old is one of three former winners in the field for this year’s Giro, alongside Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma).

The Italian fell off the pace with 7km remaining on Stage 4 on Tuesday, leaking 2:30 to his GC rivals to all but end his pink jersey ambitions. It compounded a miserable day for Astana Qazaqstan, which also saw team-mate Miguel Angel Lopez abandon the race with a hip injury.

'Issues we have to solve' – Verstappen concerned by reliability of his Red Bull car

Max Verstappen says Red Bull still have issues to solve if they are to beat Ferrari and Charles Leclerc to Formula One titles this year.

Verstappen is the favourite to defend his F1 championship after winning the Emilia Romagna and Miami GPs, outpacing Leclerc in both races.

However, the Dutchman is concerned about reliability issues after his car suffered a hydraulic leak in Miami on Friday which followed DNFs in Bahrain and Australia. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez also had engine issues during the race in Miami.

Verstappen says he and the Red Bull team are working hard to rectify their problems, but admits there are concerns.

“We’re still having a few issues we have to solve,” he said.

“We are quick, but my Friday was terrible… which is not great if you want to have a good weekend.

“And also Checo had a few issues in the race, so we have to be on top of that. But clearly there is a lot of potential, we just need to make sure it’s reliable.

“We have to make sure these things don’t happen… of course, we are working on them flat out.”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said even with Perez’s issues, the team are heading in the right direction.

“Of course reliability is going to be an issue,” he said.

“We had a sensor issue on Checo’s [Perez] engine and the guys did well to move them around but he lost about 30 horsepower with that. He was losing half a second a lap.

“We saw in Imola how quickly things can change around and we have some interesting races coming up and the car is running well.

“We have some developments coming later in the summer which will help, we need to drop some weight but generally, I think we are on a good trajectory.”

The Spanish Grand Prix gets underway on May 22.

Giorgio Chiellini receives offers from two MLS clubs – including LAFC

Italian center-back Giorgio Chiellini was recently offered a contract by MLS side LAFC, according to reports.

The 37-year-old has been a stalwart for Juventus since 2005, making well over 500 appearances for the club and winning nine Serie A titles among a host of major honors. At international level, the veteran defender has 116 caps for Italy to his name and was part of their Euro 2020-winning side.

Chiellini signed a new deal with Juventus last August that runs to the end of the 2022/23 Serie A campaign, but reports emerged last month that he would depart the club at the end of the current season. Major League Soccer was listed as his most likely destination.

On Tuesday, The Athletic reported Los Angeles FC have already reached out and made an offer to Chiellini, but could not confirm whether or not he is still considering it. Their report also revealed that the Vancouver Whitecaps – led by Italian coach Vanni Sartini – are also interested.

LAFC have not offered Chiellini a Designated Player contract, but instead would use Targeted Allocation Money, meaning he could earn no more than $1.65m in 2023.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano later reported that Chiellini has already received offers from two MLS clubs, with another team joining the hunt alongside LAFC.

Milan among contenders for RB Leipzig hitman Nkunku

Milan have been named by L’Equipe as one of the clubs interested in RB Leipzig hitman Christopher Nkunku, along with Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona.

The France international has been simply a sensation this season, scoring 34 goals in 49 competitive games for RB Leipzig, along with contributing 19 assists for his teammates.

He proved instrumental in eliminating Atalanta from the Europa League quarter-final too.

Nkunku was signed from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 for €13m and reports suggest his price-tag is now pushing €100m.

According to L’Equipe, Milan are among the contenders for the 24-year-old’s signature, along with Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona.

The Rossoneri usually shy away from big transfers, but talks for a takeover from either Investcorp or RedBird, as well as their Champions League qualification, are fuelling hopes they can make a splash on the market this summer with a statement signing.

Calciomercato.com also see Milan pursuing Nkunku as the player who could really take them to another level, especially for his tactical versatility that allows him to play as a trequartista, a False 9 or on the wing.
