Impressive Spain come from behind to put four past Georgia and set up Germany quarter-final

Scintillating Spain set up a mouthwatering quarter-final clash with Germany after coming from behind to win 4-1 in Cologne and end Georgia’s fairytale run in their first major tournament.

Willy Sagnol’s Crusaders could barely get out of their own penalty area in the opening quarter of an hour but sprung forward on 18 minutes to stun La Roja with a lightning counter that saw Robin Le Normand put through his own net.

Spain patiently probed despite the shock of conceding for the first time in the competition and eventually levelled on 39 minutes when Rodri drilled a low 20-yard shot into the bottom corner.

The pattern continued following the interval with Spain laying siege to their opponent’s area and they deservedly took the lead on 51 minutes when Fabian Ruiz nodded in Lamine Yamal’s quite sublime cross.

Luis de la Fuente’s side were firmly in their groove by now and hammered home their dominance late on with wonderful solo goals from Nico Williams and substitute Dani Olmo

Spain will now meet hosts Germany in the last eight in Stuttgart on July 5.

Talking Point – Spain impress again ahead of blockbuster with Die Mannschaft

This was another performance that further underlined La Roja’s status as one of the major contenders, as they target a third title in the last five editions.

Luis de la Fuente has got the abundance of talent at disposal producing bewitching, fully in-sync football with the likes of young guns Williams, Pedri and Lamine Yamal continuing to enthral.

Spain now switch focus to a clash of the two teams to have won this trophy more than anyone. Both Germany and La Roja have three titles apiece with the winner of the upcoming quarter final likely to be seen as favourites to go on and pull clear as the most successful Euros country in history courtesy of a fourth triumph.

As for Georgia, their fairytale run never looked like continuing here – despite the opener – but they head home from their first major international tournament with their heads held high and memories of group success and that famous victory over Portugal.

Player of the match

Fabian Ruiz (Spain). It could have been any number of Spain stars but the PSG midfielder gets the nod for an all-round display that he capped with a third goal in his last four appearances for his country and La Roja’s all-important second of the night.

18’ – GOAL! – Spain 0-1 Georgia: (Le Normand own goal). Talk about against the run of play! Khvicha Kvaratskhelia attacks a right-wing cross and it unnerves Robin Le Normand, who can only watch in horror as he diverts the ball into the back of his own net.

Carter continues early season surge to reach Championship League final group stage

Ali Carter continued his impressive start to the new season with two century breaks helping him top Group E to reach the final stage of the Championship League in Leicester.

The two-time world finalist finished the section unbeaten with two 2-2 draws against second-placed Wu Yize boosted by a couple of 3-1 wins over ‘Jackpot’ Jack Lisowski.

Carter finished three points clear of Wu at the summit of a three-man section after 2010 world champion Neil Robertson withdrew from the event due to conflicting commitments in China.

The highlight of Carter’s day saw him produce breaks of 130 against Wu and 120 against Lisowski at the season’s first ranking event.

Meanwhile, Scott Donaldson won Group A on seven points with wins over Chris Wakelin (3-1) and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (3-0) and a 2-2 draw with Fan Zhengyi in the group decider at the Mattioli Arena.

Donaldson – who produced breaks of 106 and 81 against Wakelin – won the invitational version of the Championship League in 2020, but the Scotsman has dropped from 22nd in the world rankings to 51 in recent years.

2023 Championship League finalist Mark Williams returns to the table on Monday with Crucible runner-up Jak Jones and Si Jiahui also in action.

Stage one consisted of 32 groups of four players. The eight group winners contest a further two groups with the winners meeting in the final.

There is £33,000 on the table for the winner plus a spot in the Champion of Champions later in the year which is worth another £12,500 for qualifying.

Lyles sets US Olympic trials 200m record with 19.53s, takes national title

Noah Lyles set a new US Olympic trial record with a blistering 19.53s winning run in the 200m on Saturday night, posting the fastest time anywhere in the world for the event in 2024.

Lyles, who claimed the 100m last weekend, was forced to come from behind to overcome rivals Kenny Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton who finished second and third respectively in the event in Eugene, Oregon.

The new mark overhauls Ben Johnson’s 19.66s time set during qualifying for the Atlanta games in 1996.

A bronze medalist in the event in 2021 in Tokyo, Lyles is twice a world champion in the event and claimed his fourth US title with Saturday’s record run.

The Florida native spoke to the press pack after his successful run and declared: “The goal had to be win the 100 and win the 200, so the job is accomplished.

Lyles also admitted that the race had not gone the way his team had anticipated.

He said: “Kenny got a great start. The plan was actually to swallow him up in the first 50 metres…but I knew that he was definitely working on something, so I guess that was it.”

Bednarek also finished second to Lyles in the 100m.

Following a disappointing third place finish in Tokyo, Lyles spoke openly about his struggles with depression.

Now in a better place mentally, Lyles has his sights set on a big performance in Paris.

He said: “I’ve said it all season but it helps to not have depression. I thank God every day for getting me through each and every round. Healthy, mentally and physically.”

For his part, Bednarek remains hopeful of gold in Paris.

He said: “I had it but I tightened up a little bit, so I’m gonna get him next time. I’m on his case.”
