Lookman and Ruggeri help fire Atalanta into final with victory over Marseille

Ademola Lookman played a starring role as Atalanta booked their spot in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final with a 3-0 victory at home to Marseille.

The Nigeria international struck a deflected opener on the half hour mark and was a constant menace throughout as La Dea secured a 4-1 success on aggregate.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side looked the more threatening from the off with Gianluca Scamacca hitting the woodwork and Charles De Ketelaere twice going close to putting the tie beyond the French outfit, before Lookman broke the deadlock from distance.

Iliman Ndiaye lobbed wide with a gilt-edged chance to level for the visitors following the restart and he was made to pay on 52 minutes when Matteo Ruggeri played a one-two with Lookman and rifled a stunning strike into the top corner.

Marseille almost seized a lifeline when Jordan Veretout’s deep free-kick was misjudged by La Dea keeper Juan Musso, but cannoned back off the crossbar.

Atalanta then put the icing on the cake deep into stoppage time through substitute El Bilal Toure and will now meet Bayer Leverkusen or AS Roma in their first ever major European final in Dublin on May 22.

Mbemba beauty cancels out Scamacca strike as first leg ends level

Marseille were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in the opening leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final against Atalanta, despite dominating the game for large periods.

The visitors took a shock lead on 11 minutes when former West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca converted from Teun Koopmeiners’ pass.

The response was almost instant though, with Chancel Mbemba deservedly equalising with a terrific long-range strike.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then missed a pair of chances either side of half-time for the hosts, the best of them when sent through one-on-one by Amine Harit, only to drag his effort wide.

Marseille continued to impress after the break, but they struggled to create too many clear openings, with substitute Iliman Ndiaye rattling the woodwork with the best of them.

That left the hosts open to a sucker-punch at the other end, and Atalanta came so close to stealing the win when substitute Aleksey Miranchuk dragged wide after a rapid counter-attack.

The second leg takes place on Thursday, May 9, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

TALKING POINT – Missed chance for Marseille?

Marseille, three-time finalists in the UEFA Europa League / UEFA Cup, may feel that this match finishing all square was a missed opportunity for them.

The French outfit had by far the best of the chances on home soil, but their finishing simply was not good enough when they got in and around the penalty area.

Atalanta will have been mightily relieved to have escaped with a draw given the pressure they were under at times, and may now be slight favourites to make it to Dublin for the final.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Amine Harit (Marseille). The forward was surprisingly hooked off after 71 minutes, but up to that point he had been the most threatening player on the pitch.

Harit caused constant problems for Atalanta with his directness and pace, often surging forward to create chances for his side.

But it was his passing that was most lethal, regularly feeding his team-mates in and around the penalty area as he proved a thorn in the side of the defenders, who would have been happy to have seen him withdrawn.

PLAYER RATINGS

MARSEILLE: Lopez 7; Clauss 7, Mbemba 7, Balerdi 6, Murillo 6, Henrique 7; Veretout 7, Kondogbia 7, Harit 8; Sarr 6, Aubameyang 7. Subs: Moumbagna 6, Merlin 6, Ounahi 6, Ndiaye 7

KEY MOMENTS

11’ GOAL! MARSEILLE 0-1 ATALANTA (Gianluca Scamacca). OUT OF NOWHERE! Atalanta have barely broken into the Marseille half, but they suddenly have the lead and Scamacca is picked out in the area and converts with a clinical finish. Wow!

20’ GOAL! MARSEILLE 1-1 ATALANTA (Chancel Mbemba) IT HAS BEEN COMING! What a finish by the defender as well! A short corner leads to Mbemba picking up possession 25 yards out, and he curls a wonderful effort into the far top corner. That is magnificent.

42’ AUBAMEYANG FIRES WIDE. Wow! A rapid, rapid counter-attack by Marseille, with Harit feeding the Europa League’s top scorer Aubameyang in acres of space, but he drags his shot wide of the far post! Given he was through one-on-one, you would expect him to hit the target at the very least from there

74’ OFF THE BAR! Ndiaye has only been on the pitch seconds and with his first touch he rattles the ball, although he slips as he shoots and that must have impacted him slightly

90’ CLOSE FROM MIRANCHUK. The substitute has a chance in the dying moments of the game, with a counter-attack eventually ending in the striker dragging a shot narrowly wide

KEY STATS

  • Marseille extend their winless run against Italian opponents to 12 games, dating back to 2012
  • Atalanta have not lost any of their last dozen away fixtures in the Europa League

Marseille beat Benfica on penalties to secure semi-final spot in Europa League

Marseille defeated Benfica 4-2 on penalties, after the sides were deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate, and go on to face Atalanta in the semi-finals of the Europa League

The hosts dominated the match, which they went into with a 2-1 deficit, but for much of the game it appeared they might be held out by the stout Benfica defence and goalkeeping of Anatolii Trubin.

This was until substitute Faris Moumbagna headed home a cross from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 10 minutes from time.

After a pulsating 90 minutes, extra time was a more measured affair with both sides out on their feet by the end of the 120 minutes.

Angel Di Maria missed the opening spot kick shooting against the right post, then after five perfect kicks, Antonio Silva saw his shot saved by Pau Lopez diving to his right and Luis Henrique then scored to send l’OM into the last four.

Silva and Di Maria fire Benfica into first-leg lead over Marseille

Benfica took a 2-1 lead in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie with Marseille, who are firmly in the contest thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal.

Reigning Portuguese champions Benfica were in complete control of the tie when Angel Di Maria tucked home from close range in the 52nd minute of Thursday’s encounter at Estadio da Luz.

Rafa Silva had put Benfica ahead early on, slotting in at the culmination of a slick team move.

Di Maria’s goal was equally as well worked, though Casper Tengstedt’s wild miss soon after handed Marseille a reprieve.

Aubameyang duly made Tengstedt pay for his profligacy, ensuring Marseille are well in with a chance heading into the second leg at Stade Velodrome.

Alexander Bah should have put Benfica ahead in the sixth minute, only for the defender to miskick from Di Maria’s inch-perfect cross.

Benfica had their goal in the 16th minute – Silva prodding beyond Pau Lopez after fine combination play between David Neres and Tengstedt.

Marseille enjoyed a bright start to the second half, but their resolve was further punctured when Di Maria side-footed home after linking up with Neres.

Tengstedt should have done better shortly after, yet the Dane failed to keep his cool in the area, lashing wide.

Marseille made their fortune count – Aubameyang bursting in behind Benfica’s lines and coolly picking out the bottom-right corner to leave the tie in the balance.

Talking Point – Still got it

At 36 and 34 respectively, Di Maria and Aubameyang could be forgiven for slowing down, but both are enjoying wonderful campaigns.

Di Maria has now netted 16 times in all competitions for Benfica, while he was also hugely influential from a creative sense this time out. Aubameyang, on the other hand, is going through something of a revival at Marseille, and he now has 10 Europa League goals this season in as many appearances.

Player of the Match – Angel Di Maria

Di Maria wielded his influence from the right wing, and often interchanged with Rafa and Neres in a fluid attacking trio behind Tengstedt. The Argentine had 99 touches and three attempts at goal.

Player Ratings

Benfica: Trubin 6, Bah 5, Silva 6, Otamendi 6, Aursnes 6, Neves 7, Florentino 6, Di Maria 8*, Rafa 7, Neres 8, Tengstedt 7. Subs: Joao Mario 6, Leonardo 6.

Marseille: Lopez 6, Mbemba 5, Gigot 6, Balerdi 6, Luis Henrique 6, Kondogbia 5, Veretout 6, Merlin 6, Harit 6, Aubameyang 7, Moumbagna 5. Subs: Ndiaye 7, Ounahi 6, Soglo 6.

Match Highlights

6’ – CHANCE! Benfica 0-0 Marseille (Bah): A huge opportunity for Benfica! Following a short corner, a cross is put in from the right flank, with Bah stealing a march on his marker. But, despite having space, the defender can’t connect properly with his effort from close range, and Marseille’s defence recover to clear their lines. Lucky!

16’ – GOAL! Benfica 1-0 Marseille (Rafa): Benfica take the lead! Rafa Silva has got the opener! Just as Marseille had been settling into this tie, now they are behind. A slick bit of interplay between David Neres and Tengstedt sees the latter slide a neat pass into the path of Rafa who, after taking a touch, prods home at the end of a smart third-man run, sending the home fans into raptures. There’s a bit of a delay while VAR checks the goal, but it will stand!

52’ – GOAL! Benfica 2-0 Marseille (Di Maria): What a lovely goal, and the hosts are now two to the good! It’s that man Di Maria, who is on hand to tap home at the end of a fantastic move. The Argentine exchanged a quick one-two with Neres, whose cutback put it on a plate for the former Real Madrid and PSG star to finish from close range.

67’ – GOAL!!! Benfica 2-1 Marseille (Aubameyang): He. Doesn’t. Miss. That’s a fantastic goal from Aubameyang, and Marseille are right back in this! Ndiaye’s throughball finds its way through Benfica’s line, and Auba makes no mistake as he charges through, sets himself for a finish and duly slots home. He might be 34, but in those areas, he is still deadly. Game on!

73’ – CHANCE! Benfica 2-1 Marseille (Harit): Harit has his head in his hands after he volleys wide at the far post, having been picked out by a deep cross. Benfica are all over the place at the moment!
