Germany grab stoppage-time equaliser to deny Switzerland and top group

A terrific injury-time header from Niclas Fullkrug at the end of another terrific match salvaged a draw for Germany, who now go through to the knockout stages as Group A winners. Switzerland, who had taken the lead in the first half and were excellent throughout, qualify for the last 16 in second place.

Germany began fairly well, dominating possession, but Switzerland defended with discipline and conviction, shutting down spaces and winning challenges. On 17 minutes, Robert Andrich thought he’d put the hosts ahead with his first international goal, Yann Sommer diving under his shot, but the ref, encouraged by VAR, rightly disallowed the goal for a foul by Jamal Musiala on Michel Aebischer.

Then, on 28 minutes, Switzerland took the lead, Fabian Rieder winning the ball and driving forward before Remo Freuler’s excellent cross was volleyed home by Dan Ndoye.

Germany did not improve much after half-time, Switzerland as likely to score a clincher as they were an equaliser. But with seconds remaining, one sub, David Raum, crossed for another, Fullkrug, whose touch, strength and composure under pressure redeemed a nevertheless concerning night for the hosts.

Pang upstaged by Carrington at Championship League on Long day in Leicester

Stuart Carrington emerged as the winner of Group 20 at the Championship League on Saturday as he earned a 2-2 draw with Pang Janxu to progress at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester.

World No. 72 Carrington needed a point against Pang in the section decider after completing wins over Gong Chenzhi (3-1) and Gerard Greene (3-0) and held his nerve to reach the last 32 of the season’s first ranking event.

Despite former WST Classic finalist Pang, the talented world No. 29, producing breaks of 67 and 57 to twice level the contest it was not enough to avoid an early exit.

There were no such problems for Pang’s compatriot Long Zehuang in topping Group 19 with three straight victories over Lei Peifan (3-1), Alfie Davies (3-1) and Jamie O’Neill (3-1) as he finished five points clear of Davies.

Long made five 50-plus breaks, finishing with a 98 in his win against O’Neill, who had replaced Noppon Saengkham in the competition.

Four-time world champion John Higgins begins his campaign on Monday, with Scottish and Welsh Open champion Gary Wilson also in action.

Stage one consists of 32 groups of four players. The eight group winners contest a further two groups with the winners meeting in the final.

There is £33,000 on the table for the winner plus a spot in the Champion of Champions later in the year which is worth another £12,500 for qualifying.

Tielemans and De Bruyne help Belgium to victory over Romania

Belgium finally asserted their credentials at Euro 2024 with a 2-0 victory over Romania in an open match in Cologne.

Kevin De Bruyne sealed the match for the Red Devils with a poached goal ten minutes from time, in a match in which Belgium missed a host of chances.

For the third time in the tournament Romelu Lukaku had a goal disallowed, and he and his teammates saw several other chances saved by Florin Nita. De Bruyne and substitute Leandro Trossard were also wasteful in playing decisive passes to open players.

Dennis Man had Romania’s best chance in the second half, which was smothered by Koen Casteels.

It was Youri Tielemans that gave Belgium the lead after just 75 seconds, when he walked onto a lay-off by Lukaku to crash a low drive past Florin Nita.

The goal was the third quickest in the history of the European Championship.

The result means that all four teams in Group E now have three points, with the remaining fixtures to be played on Wednesday.
