Germany grab stoppage-time equaliser to deny Switzerland and top group

A terrific injury-time header from Niclas Fullkrug at the end of another terrific match salvaged a draw for Germany, who now go through to the knockout stages as Group A winners. Switzerland, who had taken the lead in the first half and were excellent throughout, qualify for the last 16 in second place.

Germany began fairly well, dominating possession, but Switzerland defended with discipline and conviction, shutting down spaces and winning challenges. On 17 minutes, Robert Andrich thought he’d put the hosts ahead with his first international goal, Yann Sommer diving under his shot, but the ref, encouraged by VAR, rightly disallowed the goal for a foul by Jamal Musiala on Michel Aebischer.

Then, on 28 minutes, Switzerland took the lead, Fabian Rieder winning the ball and driving forward before Remo Freuler’s excellent cross was volleyed home by Dan Ndoye.

Germany did not improve much after half-time, Switzerland as likely to score a clincher as they were an equaliser. But with seconds remaining, one sub, David Raum, crossed for another, Fullkrug, whose touch, strength and composure under pressure redeemed a nevertheless concerning night for the hosts.

Scotland still alive at Euro 2024 after nerve-wracking draw with Switzerland

Scotland and Switzerland drew 1-1 in Cologne on Wednesday in a chaotic game in Group A of Euro 2024, which saw Scotland keep their hopes of qualification alive by the slimmest of margins.

The Scots were a changed side compared to the team that were demolished in Munich five days ago. They opened the scoring after a 10-minute passage that saw them show more intensity and astuteness than they did in the entire 90 minutes against Germany.

Scott McTominay’s shot capped off a quick counter-attack, with Fabian Schar getting in the way and turning it into his own goal although the goal was later given to the Manchester United man.

But a stunner from Xherdan Shaqiri levelled the scores roughly 13 minutes later with the winger profiting from Scotland’s poor attempt to play out from the back.

While Scotland will be buoyed by taking a point, a hamstring injury to Kieran Tierney will more than likely end his tournament and sees Steve Clarke’s side robbed of one of their most valuable pieces.

Embolo scores on emotional return to national team as Switzerland beat Hungary

Switzerland’s dominant first-half display helped earn them a 3-1 victory over Hungary in Group A at Euro 2024.

In just his second appearance for his country, Kwadwo Duah opened the scoring after a brilliantly timed run allowed him to latch on to Michel Aebischer’s through ball and beat Peter Gulacsi.

Switzerland continued to push for a second and were rewarded just before half-time with Aebischer’s beautiful curling effort landing in the bottom right-hand corner.

Hungary came out fighting after the break and got themselves back into it when a cross from captain Dominik Szoboszlai found the head of Roland Varga.

But it ultimately wasn’t enough, and Breel Embolo rounded off the win with a lifted finish over Gulacsi’s head in stoppage time.

The win now puts Switzerland level on points with hosts Germany in Group A.

Today’s game was widely seen as the decider for second place given both will be expected to beat Scotland and lose to the hosts.

However, anything can happen and Hungary will still fancy their chances of progressing even if it’s as one of the best third-placed teams.

Talking Point – Are Hungary feeling the pressure?

Heading into the tournament Hungary were fancied by many as being one of the dark horses given their impressive unbeaten run in qualifying, but they looked off the pace today.

They struggled to create chances in the first half and whilst they were much improved in the second period, you can’t afford many mistakes at a major tournament or you will be punished.

Their next game is against the hosts Germany and it will be a huge ask for them to get anything out of that game.

Player of the Match – Michel Aebischer (Switzerland)

There were several good Swiss players on the pitch today and their experience showed, but Aebischer’s display in the first half was incredible.

He created several chances from midfield, assisting Duah for the first goal and then expertly finishing from 23 yards out for the second.

If Scotland are to have any chance of beating Switzerland next week, they’ll need to deal with him.
