France edge past Portugal with penalty shoot-out win after stalemate

France progressed into the Euro 2024 semi-finals as defender Theo Hernandez scored the winning spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out against Portugal.

Portugal substitute Joao Felix was the only player to be denied during the shoot-out after rattling the post.

Portugal were confident going into the shoot-out after progressing into the quarter-finals after beating Slovenia on penalties following another goalless draw.

However, France were perfect from the penalty spot with Theo Hernandez, Bradley Barcola, Jules Kounde, Youssouf Fofana and Ousmane Dembele all netting to send them through.

Merino nets dramatic header in extra-time as Spain dump hosts Germany out

Spain substitute Mikel Merino condemned host nation Germany to an agonising Euro 2024 quarter-final exit with the last-gasp winner in a dramatic 2-1 victory in Stuttgart for the three-time European champions.

Merino popped up in the 119th minute to power a header into Germany’s net from a lovely cross from Dani Olmo, who had fired Spain ahead on 51 minutes when he slammed a superb Lamine Yamal pass into the net.

Germany dominated the second half and deservedly equalised on 89 minutes when Florian Wirtz tucked the ball in off the post from a Joshua Kimmich header.

The game seemed destined for penalties with chances at both ends, but it was left to Luis de La Fuente’s Spain – who had Dani Carvajal sent off in the closing seconds for a second booking – to have the final say to secure a semi-final meeting with France or Portugal.

Meanwhile, Germany are left to reflect on what might have been as they become the first host nation to exit the European Championship at the quarter-final stage.

Page receives rankings boost despite Championship League final defeat

Jackson Page has moved inside the world’s top 40 despite losing 3-1 to Ali Carter in the Championship League final on Wednesday in Leicester.

The 22-year-old Welshman reached his first major final at the season’s first ranking event, but was left helpless as two-time world finalist Carter produced breaks of 116, 96 and 50 to claim his sixth ranking title at the Mattioli Arena.

Page moves up from 45 to a career high of 39 in the latest provisional rankings after earning £23,000 for reaching the final with world No. 10 Carter collecting £33,000 to close the gap on world No. 9 Mark Williams to only 4,500 points.

“I’m delighted with how I played in the final, I felt the most comfortable with the most at stake which is pleasing,” said Carter, who returns to action at the Shanghai Masters live on Eurosport and discovery+ (15-21 July)

“Jackson is such a great young player with a ton of potential and was playing great, so I’m delighted to get a victory over one of the young guns.”

Carter denied Williams the chance to contest an all-Welsh final with a 3-1 win over the three-time world champion in their Group 1 decider.

Page edged out Crucible semi-finalist David Gilbert on frame difference to top Group 2.

Elsewhere, recent Welsh Open finalist Martin O’Donnell was rewarded for his run to the final day of the event by moving up 10 places from 63 to the 53 in the world courtesy of the £8,000 he picked up while former World Seniors champion David Lilley is up to 57th for earning £8,000.

On-fire Williams makes dream start to final day at Championship League

Mark Williams began his quest for a 27th career ranking title victory with two stunning centuries on the final day of the Championship League in Leicester.

The three-time world champion produced breaks of 139 and 112 to move 2-0 ahead of Martin O’Donnell before wrapping up a rapid win by dominating the third frame against the Welsh Open finalist, who was restricted to only 22 points.

World No. 9 Williams claimed the British Open and Tour Championship titles last season, but is bidding to win the Championship League for the first time in his 32-year professional career having lost 3-0 to Shaun Murphy in last year’s final.

Williams, O’Donnell, Ali Carter and Scott Donaldson are in Group 1 of the final group phase on Wednesday with Jackson Page, David Lilley, Long Zehuang and David Gilbert in Group 2.

The winners of the two groups will meet in the final of the season’s first ranking event at the city’s Mattioli Arena on Wednesday night.

Stage one consisted of 32 groups of four players with the eight group winners reaching the final two groups.

There is £33,000 on the table for the winner plus a spot in the Champion of Champions later in the year which is worth another £12,500 for qualifying.
