Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) surged to a first-ever Giro d’Italia stage win after a brilliant solo attack late on.
The two-time world champion spent most of Stage 12 on the front, and after dropping fellow escapee Mirco Maestri (Polti-Kometa) in the latter stages, roared home to his triumph in Fano.
