Rennes dominate Marseille to leave Champions League spot up for grabs

Rennes dominated Marseille to win 2-0 and leave Ligue 1’s Champions League places undecided going into the final day.

Martin Terrier provided two first-half assists, setting up Benjamin Bourigeaud and Lovro Majer, and probably should have added a goal himself in a completely one-sided first half.

The second period continued much like the first, but Rennes were unable to add to their tally.

Feyenoord stand firm to secure draw at Marseille and spot in final

Marseille, who started the match without a recognised striker, were completely unable to impose themselves on a Rennes side who appeared to outnumber them in defence, midfield and attack.

Veteran goalkeeper Steven Mandanda was easily their most influential player for most of the match.

The visitors, who have the division’s best away record, had only one real period in which they threatened. It was no consequence that that spell came after striker Bamba Dieng was introduced.

This result, and others in Ligue 1 this evening, means Marseille surrender second place and now must get at least a point next week at home to Strasbourg to ensure Champions League qualification.

Rennes have given themselves a real chance at sneaking into third if results go their way on matchday 38.
