Venezia are relegated, but rest go down to the wire

Venezia are the first side to be mathematically relegated into Serie B, but the other two spots remain a battle between five clubs.

Salernitana picked up a point away to Empoli in this afternoon’s 1-1 draw, and would’ve won it had Guglielmo Vicario not saved the late Diego Perotti penalty.

The veteran forward was distraught at the final whistle, collapsing into tears and consoled by his teammates.

Although it was only a point, it still means Venezia are now mathematically relegated due to their inferior head-to-head record with Salernitana.

The Lagunari had been promoted last summer via the Serie B play-offs and it was their first top flight campaign in over 20 years.

It does not matter what their result will be this evening against Roma.

As for the other two relegation places, that is going down to the wire, because Salernitana could drop back down into the bottom three if Cagliari beat Scudetto contenders Inter tomorrow.

Sampdoria and Spezia need two points from the last two rounds to secure safety.

Realistically, only one from Salernitana, Cagliari and Genoa will still be in Serie A next season.

It could go down to head-to-head records, but as Salernitana and Cagliari’s balance is totally even, that would be decided by overall goal difference.

That is enough to doom Salernitana, who have a much worse record than their rivals.
