Gloucester book place in Challenge Cup final after thrilling win over Benetton

Gloucester booked their place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 24 after beating Benetton Treviso 40-23 in the EPCR Challenge Cup semi-final.

A win in the final could be their second trophy this season after clinching the Premiership Cup, and it would be their third Challenge Cup trophy.

First-half tries from Josh Hathaway and Seb Blake saw them hit a 15-6 lead, before Rhyno Smith scored at the end of the first half with a magical score.

Adam Hastings and Freddie Clarke added tries while Benetton’s Gianmarco Lucchesi scored two of his own to keep his side in contention.

But Hastings’ boot and a late try from Ollie Thorley took them to 40 points and all the way to the final with a decisive win.

Gloucester are heading to their fifth EPCR Challenge Cup final after an emphatic 40-23 win over Benetton at Kingsholm on Saturday.

Gloucester started as strong as they possibly could, throwing a slew of strong carries and smart movement at Benetton. It was only a matter of time before they got points on the board and did so just six minutes in through Josh Hathaway.

Captain Lewis Ludlow stole possession in Benetton’s 22, and a kick-through from Chris Harris wasn’t cleared up by the Italian’s backline, allowing Hathaway to pounce and open the scoring.

It took roughly 10 more minutes for Benetton to get some sort of foothold into the game but started to poke a few holes in Gloucester’s defence with some pacey carries, forcing a penalty, which Tomas Albornoz slotted over to get his side on the board.

Adam Hastings, who missed the conversion for the opening try, responded with a penalty of his own a few minutes later. Gloucester, who have struggled in the Premiership season and leaked tries, looked calm and measured as they managed to nullify Benetton for much of the half. They made that count shortly before 30 minutes with a trademark maul try in which hooker Seb Blake crashed over with the ball in hand.

It seemed the hosts would walk into the second period on top but in the 40th minute, Benetton produced a magic moment. Stealing from Gloucester’s scrum, they raced from one 22 to another, putting it through the hands for Rhyno Smith to blaze past two defenders and score.

Despite a Hastings penalty in the second, Benetton got themselves on top with a maul try of their own through Gianmarco Lucchesi. Albornoz missed the conversion that would have drawn them level. Regardless, the game was beginning to open up and you’d bet the Italians to thrive in the looseness.

Instead, it was Gloucester who thrived. Hastings capped a strong performance and return to form with a try after a slick break from Ollie Thorley.

Five minutes later, despite 17 minutes left on the clock, Gloucester’s fans felt the win in reach. Freddie Clarke produced another memorable European try when he intercepted Albornoz’s pass, running fifty metres and diving under the posts.

A second try from Lucchesi came and so did another Hastings penalty, but it was a late try from Ollie Thorley that confirmed the win, eliciting a huge roar from a crowd clad in red and white as their beloved side sailed through to another final.

Talking Point – A tremendous end to a poor season

Gloucester’s Premiership campaign has been dismal this year with just four wins and a boatload of tries conceded. But a huge win today over a formidable side in Benetton and a fifth Challenge Cup final could save George Skivington’s season.

With one trophy, the Premiership Cup, in the bag, a second will sweeten a sad year for Gloucester fans.

Sharks will be tough opposition but after today, Gloucester have every chance of doing it.

Player of the Match – Zach Mercer

Again, obviously – whatever you want to say. But he deserves it. The No. 8 is consistently the glue that holds this Gloucester side together and delivers in the biggest moments with grace and aggression in equal measures.

Even with a yellow card to his name today he showed why he’s one of, if not already the best eight in the Premiership.

28’ TRY! SEB BLAKE | GLOUCESTER 15-6 BENETTON – That’s the Gloucester of a few seasons back, trademark lineout maul. The Cherry and Whites’ pack powers through the visitor’s forwards and Seb Blake dots down with ball in hand.

36’ YELLOW CARD! ZACH MERCER – Mercer heads to the sin-bin for a trip on Rhyno Smith after missing the fullback in the tackle.

40’ TRY! SMITH | GLOUCESTER 15-11 BENETTON – Benetton push Gloucester’s scrum HARD and steal the ball. The backline then races from one 22 to another, putting it through the hands and Smith blazes past two defenders with the touchline incredibly close to score.

54’ TRY! LUCCHESI | GLOUCESTER 18-16 BENETTON – They fire back with a powerful maul try of their own! Substitute hooker Gianmarco Lucchesi has ball in hand as the side as the maul crashes over.

63’ TRY! CLARKE | GLOUCESTER 32-16 – Freddie Clarke! The roar around Kingsholm as Clarke intercepted Albornoz’s try will give you goosebumps. The second-row perfectly anticipated the fly-half’s pass and his near-fifty metre run under the posts has turned the tide totally in Gloucester’s favour.

66’ TRY! LUCCHESI | GLOUCESTER 32-23 BENETTON – A second for Lucchesi and this game opening up nicely. 15 minutes to go and you wouldn’t be surprised if Benetton muster up a late surge here….

Vermeulen double helps Exeter down Gloucester to keep slim play-off hopes alive

Exeter Chiefs kept their faint Gallagher Premiership play-off hopes alive with a 38-17 bonus-point victory away against Gloucester at Kingsholm Stadium.

A blistering start from the visitors saw Henry Slade’s early penalty followed by two quickfire converted tries as Jacques Vermeulen plundered over from close range before Dan John made the most of Slade’s bursting run through the midfield to touch down after from an offload.

Jonny May’s simple finish for Gloucester was cancelled out shortly after by Olly Woodburn but the Chiefs once again gifted their opposition a way back into the game when Jack Clement was allowed to stride over the line on the brink of half-time.

Needing a big win to maintain their play-off push, though, Exeter regained momentum after the break when Harvey Skinner’s looping miss pass allowed Immanuel Feyi-Waboso to saunter over for the bonus-point score.

A mistake moments later from Tom Cairns allowed Arthur Clark to gather a charged-down kick and score Gloucester’s third try, but Rob Baxter’s side but the result beyond doubt when Vermeulen powered over for his second score of the game late on.

The Chiefs now face a must-win home fixture against Harlequins next weekend, while Gloucester turn their attention to their Challenge Cup semi-final against Benetton.

Talking point – Exeter showcase raw talent to outclass Gloucester

It’s a transitional period for Rob Baxter’s side but performances like today’s show the potential present within this raw Chief’s squad. While there is experience in the form Slade, Woodburn and Vermeulen, the performances of Fisilau, Roots and Feyi-Waboso provide a window into the exciting future ahead.

Mistakes still need to be ironed out going forward but if they can roll this momentum into next week’s crunch game against Harlequins, there may yet be potential for a late play-off push.

Player of the Match – Jacques Vermeulen (Exeter Chiefs)

The flanker has been a constant presence with ball in hand this season and continued that today with two crucial scores. Gloucester struggled to live with his power at the breakdown and in the carry and Rob Baxter will be after more of the same from the 29-year-old in the final two games of the regular season.

Player Ratings

Gloucester: Morris 6, May 7, Harris 6, Llewellyn 6, Thorley 6, Atkinson 5, Varney 7, Ford-Robinson 6, Blake 6, Gotovtsev 5, Clarke 7, Clark 6, Ackermann 7, Clement 7, Mercer 6.

Replacements: Socino 6, Vivas 6, Knight 5, Thomas 6, Ludlow 7, Chapman 6, Englefield 5, Hillman-Cooper 6.

Exeter Chiefs: John 7, Feyi-Waboso 8, Slade 9, Hawkins 7, Woodburn 8, Skinner 7, Cairns 6, Sio 6, Yeandle 7, Street 7, Dunne 7, Jenkins 6, Roots 8, Vermeulen 9, Fisilau 8.

Replacements: Norey 7, Southworth 6, Painter 6, Tshiunza 5, Vintcent 6, Armstrong 6, Haydon-Wood 6, Wimbush n/a.

Match Highlights

6′ PENALTY! GLOUCESTER 0-3 EXETER CHIEFS (SLADE) – Slade makes no mistake, slotting over the penalty to get the Chiefs up and running.

15′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 0-8 EXETER CHIEFS (VERMEULEN) – The visitors opt for the lineout from the penalty and a great maul is brought down on the five-yard line again. This time the Chiefs tap and go and, in the end, it’s Vermeulen who buries his way over the line from short range. Slade converts the kick and it’s a great start for the Chiefs.

18′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 0-17 EXETER CHIEFS (JOHN) – Out of nowhere, the Chiefs have another! Slade makes the bursting run through the midfield, drawing two men before offloading to Skinner. The fly-half is tackled before the line but he has the presence of mind to offload the ball to John who storms over the line for his side’s second try in three minutes. Slade curls in the conversion and Exeter are in total control now.

29′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 5-17 EXETER CHIEFS (MAY) – May won’t score many easier tries than that. The visitors do superbly to stop the lineout drive but then it all opens up for the Gloucester winger on the right side as Woodburn’s attempt to intercept the ball fails, allowing May to canter in for the home side’s first try. The conversion misses.

36′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 5-24 EXETER CHIEFS (WOODBURN) – Slade the playmaker again and Exeter have another try just moments after Feyi-Waboso was denied. This time it’s Woodburn who collects the ball and touches down in the corner after a superb burst from Slade through the middle. Another great conversion, too, from Slade and the visitors are in cruise control.

40′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 10-24 EXETER CHIEFS (CLEMENT) – Gloucester do now have their vital score before the break. Exeter lose the ball at their own lineout before Clement finds a pocket of space and surges over the line to give his side a much-needed score on the brink of half-time. A poor conversion attempt follows from Atkinson, though, so it will just be the five points.

48′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 10-31 EXETER CHIEFS (FEYI-WABOSO) – Clinical from Exeter. Cairns gets the ball out of the scrum to Skinner who loops a superb pass out wide to Feyi-Waboso and he makes no mistake, touching over in the corner to give the Chiefs their bonus-point try. Slade bends the conversion in and the visitors have some much-needed breathing space.

52′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 17-31 EXETER CHIEFS (CLARK) – Another gift from Exeter and Gloucester hit back immediately. Cairns’ kick is charged down – not for the first time this game – and this time the hosts take full advantage as Clark gathers the ball and touches down. Atkinson adds the extra two points.

60′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 17-38 EXETER CHIEFS (VERMEULEN) – There’s no stopping the Exeter flanker from their as Vermeulen powers over short range for his second try of Exeter’s fifth. Slade slots over the conversion and the visitors re-establish their 21-point lead.

Key Stat

Despite winning the Premiership Rugby Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, today’s defeat means it is just seven wins in their last 31 league games for George Skivington’s side.

Carreras leads Gloucester into Challenge Cup semis after edging past Ospreys

Gloucester reached the semi-finals of the EPCR Challenge Cup, pulling away from Ospreys in the second half at Kingsholm to win 23-13.

In a match with just two tries, the Welsh side took the lead when Jack Walsh cut a swathe through the home defence before passing wide to Keelan Giles to score.

Ospreys had a lot of the early play but were left to rue turnovers at line out and scrums as Gloucester took the lead with Seb Blake touching down when his pack drove forwards from a lineout five metres from their opponents’ line.

Going into the second half just a point in front, Santiago Carreras kicked three penalties – making it six in all – to extend the lead to a comfortable margin, with the Cherry and Whites’ forwards dominating the closing stages.

Gloucester will now play either Benetton or Connacht at home in the semi-final in the first weekend of May, hoping to reach the final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 24.

Talking Point – Season turns from horror to honourable

Not long ago Gloucester’s season looked like being remembered for a club-record nine straight Premiership rugby games, but less than a month on from winning the Premiership Rugby Cup, they are two wins away from ending the year with a double triumph.

The great disappointment of the domestic league campaign which, despite recent wins, still has them adrift at second-bottom, only above winless Newcastle, seems to have been made up for if the reaction at The Shed is anything to go by.

Improvement is certainly needed and they will take a look at how better play in their backline could have seen them put a bigger distance between themselves and their Welsh opposition.

But being at home they will be favoured whoever they meet in the last four and will fancy themselves to win at Tottenham at the end of May.

Player Ratings

Gloucester: Carreras 7, May 7, Llewellyn 6, Atkinson 6, Morris 6, Hastings 6, Varney 6; Ford-Robinson 6, Blake 7, Gotovtsev 6, Clarke 7, Thomas 7, Ackermann 8*, Ludlow 7, Mercer 7.

Substitutes: Vivas 6, Tuisue 6, Clement 7, Harris 7.

Ospreys: Walsh 7, Morgan 7, K Williams 6, Watkins 7, Giles 7, O Williams 7, Morgan-Williams 6; Thomas 6, Parry 6, Botha 6, Ratti 6, Beard 6, Deaves 7, Tipuric 6, Morris 6.

Substitutes: Lloyd 7, Smith 6, Henry 6, Sutton 6, Morse 6, Davies 6, Edwards 6, Nagy 6.

Player of the Match – Ruan Ackermann (Gloucester)

With the game in the balance in the second half it was the Gloucester backrow who dominated with Zach Mercer (getting off his sickbed to pay) was also a dominant force. Ackermann was a force with and without the ball – recording a game-leading 13 tackles – and his driving run should have put the game beyond doubt on the hour mark, had Mercer not grounded his pass.

Match Highlights

14′TRY! GLOUCESTER 3-5 OSPREY (GILES) A poor kick sees Walsh gather and then scythe through the Gloucester defence and then throw wide to Giles to run in and touch down under the posts.

31′TRY! GLOUCESTER (BLAKE) 11-10 OSPREYS! No mistake this time as Blake touches down from a perfect line out take and patient drive.

59′ ACKERMANN TAKES GLOUCESTER WITHIN METRES OF LINE

But Mercer, who has played so well, grounds his pass and ruins the prospect of a walk-in try.

70′ OSPREYS CHANCE LOST! Morgan had two men outside him at the Gloucester 22 but looks inside and knocks on in the tackle.

72′ MORRIS DENIED CLOSE TO THE LINE! Carreras sets the winger free but Morgan puts him into touch a couple of metres from the line.

Key Stat

  • 6 – Gloucester have won six straight matches in European competition this season.
