Feyi-Waboso has ‘natural ingredients’ to become ‘world-class winger’ – Healey

Austin Healey lauded Exeter Chiefs star Immanuel Feyi-Waboso after his side beat Gloucester to cling onto their play-off hopes, saying he has “all the ingredients” to become a “world-class” winger.

Feyi-Waboso dotted down the visitors’ bonus-point try at Kingsholm as Rob Baxter’s side recorded a 38-17 victory to bounce back from two disappointing defeats in recent outings at Toulouse and Bath.

The 21-year-old, who featured in England’s Six Nations squad earlier this year, has scored seven times this term to sit joint-fifth in the individual charts. Northampton’s Ollie Sleightholme, Feyi-Waboso’s compatriot, leads the way with 11.

Although he did not win the Gallagher Player of the Match award in Chiefs’ morale-bolstering win on Sunday – two-try hero Jacques Vermeulen took that honour – Feyi-Waboso’s all-action display was enough to leave TNT Sports expert Healey waxing lyrical about the youngster.

“If you look at how he played and how he sits behind the ball, he was in behind the ruck and the 10, and that’s what I like about him,” Healey explained.

“A lot of wingers, particularly young guys, will get on the right wing, stay there and maybe wait for the ball. But he goes hunting for it, and he’s so good in those close areas. He can take on forwards, tight five [front and second row of the scrum] guys. He’s got a low centre of gravity.

“Defensively he’s getting better, he’s reading plays very well. He’s so young, and he’s got a lot to learn on the wing, but he’s got the natural ingredients that can turn him into a world-class winger, one of the best that we’ve produced in a long, long time.”

‘We need to stop being driven off course’ – Baxter reacts to Chiefs win

Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter gave an unusual pre-match interview to TNT Sports, indicating that victory at Kingsholm in arguably a must-win game was not as important as the “simple details” and “learned lessons” that he would rather his young squad focused on.

However, it seemed to be the perfect ploy to ease the pressure on his players, who delivered an excellent performance against a Gloucester side who haven’t been able to get going in the league this campaign.

This season, Exeter have reached a European quarter-final, losing out to a highly-experienced Toulouse side, and are still in with an outside chance of crashing the play-off places in the Premiership.

After a big turnover in playing personnel in recent years, the Devon outfit are in a transition period and still exceeding expectations in most people’s eyes.

Baxter was keen to emphasise his desire for his players to keep improving, rather than striving too hard and too early for what could be perceived to be unrealistic goals.

“From day one of pre-season, the message was ‘we need to be better by the end of this week in pre-season’,” Baxter told TNT Sports.

“We’ve driven that message every single week, whether we’ve been in European quarter-finals or a top-four Premiership game. We pushed it again this week, but we pushed it a little bit harder. We need to stop getting driven off course. We need to be the ones setting our stall out and making teams react to us and against Bath [a 26-14 defeat on April 20], fair play, they knocked us off course and we reacted to them.

“We do have to learn lessons, but today it feels like we learned one quite quickly. That’s down to the players and their attitudes and they’ve done extremely well. I hope now that they can go and have a good, old traditional bus. We haven’t got a game next week and they can really enjoy this and have a few beers and celebrate.”

Looking to next season, Baxter was open about his side’s plans, admitting that while Chiefs were in a healthier position financially, they would struggle to compete with some of the bigger-spending clubs.

“Cap isn’t going to be an issue for us,” Baxter said. “Budget is going to be the challenge.

“We know where we are. The one thing that is looking very bright for us is that we are getting back on the front foot financially. That’s what it feels like. That would allow us to do what we did when we first came into the Premiership, when we weren’t at cap, but we grew the players we had. We brought players in, and pushed through and got to the stage we wanted to be at, and we stayed at that block for seven, eight, nine years.

“We’re going to try and get back there and we’re going to have to develop together. The finances are going to have to develop along with the team.”

Vermeulen double helps Exeter down Gloucester to keep slim play-off hopes alive

Exeter Chiefs kept their faint Gallagher Premiership play-off hopes alive with a 38-17 bonus-point victory away against Gloucester at Kingsholm Stadium.

A blistering start from the visitors saw Henry Slade’s early penalty followed by two quickfire converted tries as Jacques Vermeulen plundered over from close range before Dan John made the most of Slade’s bursting run through the midfield to touch down after from an offload.

Jonny May’s simple finish for Gloucester was cancelled out shortly after by Olly Woodburn but the Chiefs once again gifted their opposition a way back into the game when Jack Clement was allowed to stride over the line on the brink of half-time.

Needing a big win to maintain their play-off push, though, Exeter regained momentum after the break when Harvey Skinner’s looping miss pass allowed Immanuel Feyi-Waboso to saunter over for the bonus-point score.

A mistake moments later from Tom Cairns allowed Arthur Clark to gather a charged-down kick and score Gloucester’s third try, but Rob Baxter’s side but the result beyond doubt when Vermeulen powered over for his second score of the game late on.

The Chiefs now face a must-win home fixture against Harlequins next weekend, while Gloucester turn their attention to their Challenge Cup semi-final against Benetton.

Talking point – Exeter showcase raw talent to outclass Gloucester

It’s a transitional period for Rob Baxter’s side but performances like today’s show the potential present within this raw Chief’s squad. While there is experience in the form Slade, Woodburn and Vermeulen, the performances of Fisilau, Roots and Feyi-Waboso provide a window into the exciting future ahead.

Mistakes still need to be ironed out going forward but if they can roll this momentum into next week’s crunch game against Harlequins, there may yet be potential for a late play-off push.

Player of the Match – Jacques Vermeulen (Exeter Chiefs)

The flanker has been a constant presence with ball in hand this season and continued that today with two crucial scores. Gloucester struggled to live with his power at the breakdown and in the carry and Rob Baxter will be after more of the same from the 29-year-old in the final two games of the regular season.

Match Highlights

6′ PENALTY! GLOUCESTER 0-3 EXETER CHIEFS (SLADE) – Slade makes no mistake, slotting over the penalty to get the Chiefs up and running.

15′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 0-8 EXETER CHIEFS (VERMEULEN) – The visitors opt for the lineout from the penalty and a great maul is brought down on the five-yard line again. This time the Chiefs tap and go and, in the end, it’s Vermeulen who buries his way over the line from short range. Slade converts the kick and it’s a great start for the Chiefs.

18′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 0-17 EXETER CHIEFS (JOHN) – Out of nowhere, the Chiefs have another! Slade makes the bursting run through the midfield, drawing two men before offloading to Skinner. The fly-half is tackled before the line but he has the presence of mind to offload the ball to John who storms over the line for his side’s second try in three minutes. Slade curls in the conversion and Exeter are in total control now.

29′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 5-17 EXETER CHIEFS (MAY) – May won’t score many easier tries than that. The visitors do superbly to stop the lineout drive but then it all opens up for the Gloucester winger on the right side as Woodburn’s attempt to intercept the ball fails, allowing May to canter in for the home side’s first try. The conversion misses.

36′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 5-24 EXETER CHIEFS (WOODBURN) – Slade the playmaker again and Exeter have another try just moments after Feyi-Waboso was denied. This time it’s Woodburn who collects the ball and touches down in the corner after a superb burst from Slade through the middle. Another great conversion, too, from Slade and the visitors are in cruise control.

40′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 10-24 EXETER CHIEFS (CLEMENT) – Gloucester do now have their vital score before the break. Exeter lose the ball at their own lineout before Clement finds a pocket of space and surges over the line to give his side a much-needed score on the brink of half-time. A poor conversion attempt follows from Atkinson, though, so it will just be the five points.

48′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 10-31 EXETER CHIEFS (FEYI-WABOSO) – Clinical from Exeter. Cairns gets the ball out of the scrum to Skinner who loops a superb pass out wide to Feyi-Waboso and he makes no mistake, touching over in the corner to give the Chiefs their bonus-point try. Slade bends the conversion in and the visitors have some much-needed breathing space.

52′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 17-31 EXETER CHIEFS (CLARK) – Another gift from Exeter and Gloucester hit back immediately. Cairns’ kick is charged down – not for the first time this game – and this time the hosts take full advantage as Clark gathers the ball and touches down. Atkinson adds the extra two points.

60′ TRY! GLOUCESTER 17-38 EXETER CHIEFS (VERMEULEN) – There’s no stopping the Exeter flanker from their as Vermeulen powers over short range for his second try of Exeter’s fifth. Slade slots over the conversion and the visitors re-establish their 21-point lead.

Key Stat

Despite winning the Premiership Rugby Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, today’s defeat means it is just seven wins in their last 31 league games for George Skivington’s side.

Harlequins down leaders Northampton while Bristol edge out Leicester

Bristol recovered from a 19-point deficit with 12 minutes remaining to win with the last kick of the match at Leicester, while Harlequins downed Northampton in a thriller at Twickenham.

Leicester seemed set to keep their slim hopes of European qualification alive as two Ollie Hassell-Collins tries and one from Francis van Wyk had them comfortably in front but Max Lahiff scored two tries and then Magnus Bradbury touched down after the 80-minute mark, with Alan MacGinty kicking the conversion.

The Big Summer Kick-Off was little less dramatic as Northampton held the lead at times in both halves but Quins roared on by a sell-out crowd at Rugby HQ powered home to victory in the closing stages.

Luke Northmore’s tries for the hosts sandwiched a five-pointer from Ollie Sleightholme and a third from Stephan Lewies had the hosts 19-13 in front at the break.

Cadan Murphy extended the lead but converted tries from James Ramm and Tom Litchfield had the visitors in front, before a late double from Will Porter ensured the Quins victory.

The results mean Bristol stay in fourth place ahead of Quins, with the battle for the top-four to go down to the wire. Northampton remain top, but the Tigers’ thoughts will now turn to next year.

England ‘blessed’ with ‘incredibly gifted’ Smiths to replace Farrell – Dallaglio

England head coach Steve Borthwick is “in such a great position” with Marcus Smith and Fin Smith at his disposal to replace Owen Farrell at fly-half, reckons TNT Sports expert Lawrence Dallaglio.

The two Smiths have performed exceptionally well at club level for their respective sides – Harlequins and Northampton Saints – with both flying high as the Gallagher Premiership season nears its resolution.

Saints sit atop the tree on 54 points, while Quins are in the play-off hunt in fifth, one point adrift of fourth-placed Bristol Bears.

The two teams face off at Twickenham live on TNT Sports and discovery+ on Saturday afternoon, with Dallaglio labelling the encounter as a potential “precursor to a semi-final or a final”.

“It is an amazing game; two teams playing incredibly well at the moment,” Dallaglio told TNT Sports.

“It’s two of the most entertaining teams in terms of the brand of rugby and it’s being played at HQ [Twickenham], so it promises to be a really exciting match with so many key players.

“I think there’ll be a few changes to the line-ups because they’ve got some big games ahead of them, both in Europe and domestically, and that’s the challenge for these teams.

“They want to keep the momentum, but they’ve also got one eye on the fact that they’re both in the semi-finals of the Champions Cup with tough games – Quins have got to go to Toulouse and Northampton have got to go to Leinster, so it’s not going to be easy for either of them.”

The game will see both Smiths face off in a battle of the English stand-off prodigies, with Harlequins’ Marcus ranking in the top 10 points scorers in the Premiership this term, racking up 63.

Both men made Borthwick’s most recent Six Nations squad, with Marcus Smith scoring the dramatic game-winning drop goal in the 23-22 win over Ireland, as well as a try in the final defeat to France in Lyon.

“Both have incredible skill and game awareness for such young men,” Dallaglio said of the pair. “They will be looking to pull the strings. I saw the average Premiership salaries were released this week, and it’s no surprise that the number 10s are deemed to be the best paid and the most important players on the field.

“Both want to win honours domestically and in Europe, and both will, I’m sure, be involved in the England tour of New Zealand. They’re both incredibly gifted and hopefully we get to see them both at their very best.

“Everyone seems to focus on both of these players, and Fin would tell you that he’s learning all the time from George Ford and Marcus, but both of them have got an incredible range of skills. It’s such a great position for Steve Borthwick to be in, to have Ford and the two Smiths when someone like Owen Farrell is moving away and is not eligible for the next two years.

“If we were as blessed in every position as we were at fly-half, then we’d certainly have a team that would be amongst the best in the world.”

Dallaglio completes mammoth ‘Cycle Slam’ to raise funds for charity

Dallaglio was speaking just a day after completing his seventh ‘Cycle Slam’ for his charity Dallaglio RugbyWorks, which aims to help those who have been excluded from schools.

The 1500km bike ride began in Rome and ended in Nice, with Dallaglio joined by some famous faces, including Wham! musician Andrew Ridgeley and former cricketer Alan Lamb.

Martin Johnson, the former England head coach, got on his bike for the opening five days of the event, and John Hall, the president of Bath Rugby, also took part.

“When I retired, I wanted to carry on doing something, and I had set up my charity, RugbyWorks,” Dallaglio explained. “I liked the idea of getting people together for a common cause. Rugby’s not too dissimilar; it’s about teamwork and coming together.

“I was inspired by Ian Botham’s Leukaemia walks having participated in them with him. I thought that I wasn’t very good at running anymore, so why not have a go at cycling, and I’d never really been on a road bike before. I’m not designed for road cycling at a mere 115 kilos – especially not up hills.”

The 30 riders that joined Dallaglio on the tour rode parts of the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France courses on their route, averaging 150km and 2km worth of ascent every day.

“[I didn’t do] enough [training],” Dallaglio joked. “It’s about five or six hours in the saddle each day and we encountered all types of weather from 20-30 degrees of sunshine to being caught in torrential storms. Thankfully we managed to get everyone over the finish line safely.

“I had about four or five punctures on day one, so that slowed the group somewhat. I’ve become slightly better at fixing punctures than when I first started.”

Dallaglio’s charity, RugbyWorks, has a special rugby programme that sends coaches into schools to help troubled young people.

“None of these kids are born bad; they’re just born into chaos,” Dallaglio said.

“They’re often primary carers in their own home and they don’t get much support. Once they’re excluded from school, they’re excluded from society, and I don’t think that’s fair or right. 65% of everyone in the prison system in the UK has been expelled from school. What’s currently happening is that once you’re excluded, there is no [safety] net to pick you up, and seven out of ten people end up in prison.

“What we do is a three-year programme, working in the schools, giving them employability days and building up their confidence and self-esteem. They have mentors that they can trust and build up a relationship with, and success for us is getting these people into full-time employment and education and currently, we’re delivering that at about an 85% success rate.

“We work with about 2,000 young kids around the country, but we could be working with so many more if we had the opportunity because if 160 are being excluded every week, then this is a problem that is only getting bigger. It’s incredibly rewarding, working with a small group of young people, but having a real impact on their lives.”
