Felix da Costa holds off Cassidy and Rowland for Formula E victory in Berlin

Antonio Felix Da Costa drove the perfect race as he led from the front to win the Formula E 10th round in Berlin.

The Portuguese driver took the race from the front and as the rest battled behind for the podium positions he forged a winning margin.

Nick Cassidy got stuck behind after fighting with Jaguar team-mate Mitch Evans for a podium position.

Cassidy eventually came past his team-mate and British driver Oliver Rowland to take second.

Nissan driver Rowland had moved up from 16th place on the grid and finished third despite losing a place to Cassidy late on.

Da Costa previously won round six of the series in Misano, Italy, before being disqualified hours after the race had ended.

“The other one got taken away a few hours after, I’m confident that we’ve got everything in line,” said Da Costa.

“It feels great to win in a home race for Porsche, it’s a special one. It had been a tough start to the season, but we’ve been building momentum.”

A second-place finish for Cassidy extended his lead in the overall championship to 16 points, despite showing his frustration at team-mate Evans competing with him for position.

“It’s a great weekend for us,” said Cassidy. “I feel sorry for Mitch (Evans) he lost out a bit there, but I feel that we could have both had a better race.

“We tried to work hard together, that sometimes work but sometimes doesn’t. In this peloton racing it’s really hard to do that.

“We gave it our best and had a great weekend.”

The series continues with round 11 and 12 on May 25-26 in Shanghai.

Cassidy times it perfectly to secure victory in Berlin

Nick Cassidy timed his winning effort to perfection to take victory in Berlin after driving through the pack from 21st to take victory.

The Jaguar driver took his second victory of the campaign to take the championship lead and set the fastest lap of the race.

Jean-Eric Vergne held off a closely grouped pack for second with Oliver Rowland placing third.

An eventful race saw two safety cars implemented after Joel Eriksson’s car stopped and pole setter Edoardo Mortara saw his car clipped into the wall.

With the result undecided a tense final five laps resulted in Jehan Daruvala crashing, but racing continued with debris on the course.

Amongst the chaos Cassidy came through the pack to race clear with just over two laps remaining and pulled out a winning margin.

Vergne had been fighting for the lead throughout and placed second, while Rowlands finished third.

“That was crazy,” said Cassidy. “It was great for the team, they were flawless all race, the comms and strategy were all perfect.

“I didn’t have the car to win today, but somehow we pulled it off.

Cassidy finished runner-up in the previous round at Monaco and victory saw him move into the overall championship lead.

Racing continues in Berlin tomorrow (Sunday) for round 10 of the series.

Mortara takes Berlin E-Prix spoils to reinvigorate championship push

ROKIT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara took victory from pole in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship’s Berlin E-Prix to pull himself back into a title race that looks to be rapidly heating up.

The Swiss driver finished runner up in the Drivers’ Championship last year and, following two frustrating DNFs in a row, took his second victory of the season to move up to fourth in the Drivers’ Championship.

Mortara held off a spirited effort from two-time Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne who pushed him all the way until a great defensive move on an attempted overtake pushed the Frenchman back and allowed Mortara to romp home.

DS TECHEETAH’s Vergne settled for second place ahead of the Drivers’ Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne who took third for Mercedes-EQ. The result left Vandoorne still top but just three points ahead of Vergne and 11 ahead of Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans while Moratara moved up to fourth, a further five points back.

And following a seamless qualifying period, Mortara admitted a feisty challenge from Vergne had seen the team change their race strategy on the fly.

“What a day,” said Mortara. “After the qualifying we were already very happy, but this race was amazing, very stressful because there were different strategies that I had to defend. In the end everything went alright, and I’m very happy.

“You have to ask him [Vergne] about what happened at the end. He tried to overtake me but I was kind of anticipating it, but luckily for me he couldn’t really stop at the apex of the corner, and I couldn’t pass him straight away, and I knew that he had spent a lot of energy so it would be difficult for him to pass me again.

“The good thing about Formula E is you need to constantly change your strategy, obviously you have a plan at the beginning of the race but nothing goes according to plan and you always need to adapt, as the others are trying to destabilise you, but in the end everything worked out very well for us.”

The chasing pack were headlined by an inter-team battle among TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team pair, André Lotterer and Pascal Wehrlein and Evans who fought it out for much of the race with the wily Lotterer finishing fourth ahead of Evans and Wehrlein.

Evan’s team-mate Sam Bird ended his pointless run to take seventh with the Brit hoping this can kick-start the second half of the season and see him continue his record of winning an E-Prix in every Formula E season.

Reigning champion Nyck de Vries was unable to halt his poor run of form since winning the opening race of the season as he finished 10th and now finds himself seventh in the Championship and a formidable 56 points behind team-mate Vandoorne.

The second race of the 2022 Shell Recharge Berlin E-Prix takes place tomorrow from the Berlin Tempelhof Circuit to mark the midpoint in the 16-race season, the biggest-ever race calendar in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
