Pogacar leaves it late to take Stage 8 victory and continue dominance

If it appeared that Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) was in a generous mood on the climb of Prati di Tivo, the race leader could not resist kicking clear of his general classification rivals to secure the third win of his debut Giro d’Italia and further cement his hold on the pink jersey.

Pogacar rode Stage 8 from Spoleto in economic fashion – allowing his UAE team-mates to control the tempo in the main field before relying on Rafal Majka and Felix Grossschartner to reel in the remaining escapees on the race’s first major summit finish.

One day after the Slovenian’s sensational time trial win, Pogacar left it until late to leave his mark – responding to Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe) when the Colombian opened up the sprint before easing to the completion of his opening-week hat-trick.

Martinez consolidated his second place in the standings with a solid second place ahead of Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and the impressive Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious). Welsh veteran Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) completed the top five but crossed the line two seconds back to sink further away from Pogacar in the general classification when bonus seconds were factored in.

“I was not expecting it at all today,” Pogacar said before praising his team-mates for their work in paving the way for his latest triumph. “As a team we rode super well from the beginning and we came with a good time gap to the last climb. Mikkel [Bjerg] and [Vegard Stake] Laengen did a super good job until the final climb. Rafa [Majka] did an amazing lead out and it’s amazing to win again here at Prati di Tivo.”

How to watch Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia as first summit finish looms

Tadej Pogacar was at it again on Friday at the Giro d’Italia, soaring to his second stage win of the race to carve out a 2’36” lead on GC after the first week.

His performance in the time trial up to Perugia was all the more impressive in that he beat TT supremo Filippo Ganna, who had led the standings for much of the day.

Ominously for the rest of the maglia rosa contenders, Pogacar is back to his favourite terrain on Saturday, as the race heads for its first summit finish at Prati di Tivo.

Can he forge more of a gap at the top of the standings, or can someone stop his charge?

Britain’s Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) will be among those hoping to do so after shipping time on Stage 7.

Pogacar storms to astonishing Stage 7 time trial victory to extend GC lead, Thomas slips back

Italian powerhouse Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) caught seven riders during a dramatic 40.3km time trial in Umbria but was ultimately beaten by a peerless performer in pink who was last to roll down the ramp but far quickest to get up the punchy climb into Perugia.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) was 44 seconds down on Ganna at the first checkpoint and then 47 seconds behind ahead of the climb. But a staggering assault on the 6.6km climb up to the picturesque Corso Vannucci in the historic hilltop city saw Pogacar turn things round in style to take a second stage win in his debut drama and cement his lead at the top of the standings.

To cap a frustrating day for Ineos Grenadiers, last year’s runner-up Geraint Thomas struggled to find his rhythm and could only post the tenth best time of Stage 7. After conceding exactly two minutes to his GC rival, Thomas also dropped one place to third after Colombia’s Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansrohe) ran a negative split to take eighth on the day.

But Ineos Grenadiers’ strength in depth was there for the world to see with four riders in the top 10 – including three riders in the top four, with Dutchman Thymen Arensman and American debutant Magnus Sheffield both impressing by pushing team-mate Ganna all the way.

Starting almost two hours earlier than the big favourites, Ganna looked all but guaranteed a career seventh time trial win as rivals Thomas and Pogacar did battle in slightly more blustery conditions. The Hour Record holder certainly had one foot on the top step of the podium when Pogacar – like the entire peloton – eschewed a bike change and embarked on the opening double-digit ramp of the final climb.

What happened next astonished fans the world over – not least the home fans cheering on their Italian TT champion, whose dominant performance looked so emphatic that Eurosport expert Jens Voigt described him as “a fighter jet verses the passenger planes”.

Ganna and Ineos had just not banked on Pogacar going stratospheric in his spaceship – the Slovenian putting in a whopping 1:04 on Ganna to become the first rider in pink to win a time trial on the Giro since Nairo Quintana a whole decade ago.

Pogacar completed the 40.6km course in an average speed of 47.088 km/h to stop the clock at 51:44 – some 17 seconds faster than the speechless Ganna watching from the hotseat. Ineos duo Sheffield and Arensman were 49 seconds and 1:00 in arrears while Germany’s Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) completed the top five at 1:05.

After his second win of the week, Pogacar now leads his nearest challenger Martinez by 2:36 with Thomas a further 10 seconds back in fourth. The final two places in the top five are now occupied by Australians Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Luke Plapp (Jayco-AlUla) – the latter taking over the white jersey from Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who dropped three places after shipping a huge chunk of time on the flat opening 36km of the ride along the picturesque Topino valley.

How to watch Stage 7 of the Giro as Pogacar and Thomas tackle time trial

The first of the race’s two individual time trials is the most difficult and comes at an important time in the race ahead of two tricky days prior to the first rest day. For the first 34km this is a fast and flat ride up the Topino valley in Umbria, passing near the historic hilltop town of Assisi. But the cat will be thrown among the pigeons 6.6km from the finish with a punchy double-digit climb (1.3km at 10.7%) ahead of a flat section and then a steady rise to the beautiful city of Perugia.

Another ramp of 11% comes 2km from the finish ahead of the leg-sapping final push towards the broad avenue of the Corso Vannucci, the social centre of the city. Such is the test of the final quarter that riders with serious ambitions to take the win – or merely to limit their losses – will have to manage their efforts on the flat section in the valley for fear of blowing up at the end.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) is already in pole position and will be looking to consolidate – or more likely increase – his 46-second advantage over Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) in the general classification.

Sanchez wins Stage 6 as Pogacar and Thomas avoid gravel drama

Pelayo Sanchez (Movistar) saw off Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) in a thrilling dust-up to win Stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia from a three-man breakaway as the GC big-hitters survived the white gravel of Tuscany.

Sanchez, Alaphilippe and Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla) splintered off the front of a larger break with around 42km remaining and worked well together – save for the odd heated discussion and misjudged roundabout.

Despite the pace being increased behind, particularly on the three gravel sectors, the trio held on into the finish, where Sanchez and Alaphilippe left Plapp behind before the Spanish debutant proved the strongest in the race to the line.
