The Giro d’Italia is into its third week, and it will be fireworks from the gun on Saturday with the second individual time trial of this year’s edition.

Filippo Ganna, after being edged out by Pogacar on Stage 7, will be among the favourites on the 31.2km run to Desenzano del Garda.

Watch Stage 14 of the 2024 Giro d’Italia on Saturday, May 18 from 12:00 UK time on Eurosport 1, while you can watch ad-free on discovery+.

The UK coverage will be bookended by The Breakaway, presented by Orla Chennaoui, who has a string of esteemed guests joining her across the three weeks.

Usual suspects Dan Lloyd, Adam Blythe and 12-time Giro stage winner Robbie McEwen will return, with former Jumbo-Visma star Nathan van Hooydonck swooping in for the final week as Blythe resumes his duties on the motorbike in Italy.

Meanwhile, former road star Daniel Oss (Stages 10-14), two-time winner Alberto Contador (Stage 15) and Blythe (Stages 16-21) will be doing their thing on the back of a motorbike to bring fans closer to the action.

Mighty Milan stars again to net hat-trick of wins

It’s going to take more than crosswinds and the kitchen sink to deny Jonathan Milan on this Giro d’Italia. Despite being caught out by a huge split in the peloton with 60km remaining of Stage 13, the Italian’s Lidl-Trek team kept their cool before delivering their man to a third sprint win while all Milan’s rivals faded.

Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) and Australians Kaden Grove (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla) were not even in the top 10 despite their teams piling on the hurt when Lidl-Trek were caught short in the wind.

Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) launched too early and allowed Milan to use his slipstream before powering to the line ahead of Poland’s Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis) and Germany’s Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious). Dutchman Tim Van Dijk (Visma-Lease a Bike) and France’s Hugo Hofstetter (Israel-Premier Tech) completed the top five.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) negotiated the crosswind chaos without any worry and finished safely in the pack to retain the pink jersey ahead of Saturday’s individual time trial and Sunday’s key summit finish, where the Slovenian will look to put to bed a race that he already leads by almost two minutes on his nearest challenger.

But the day was less about pink than the ciclamino skinsuit of Milan, who moved to over 100 points clear in the standings of the jersey he won on his Grand Tour debut at last year’s Giro.

If ever there was a stage that screamed “day for the breakaway”, this is it.

After a gentle start along the Adriatic coast, the race heads inland to tackle a series of ups and downs, with four Cat. 4 climbs dotted about to sap any teams hoping for a bunch finish.

Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) looks a good shout for victory after hinting at a return to form in the opening week and a bit, while Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos Grenadiers) will be looking to double up after his near-miss on Stage 9.

Or could it be a day for Kaden Groves, whose Alpecin-Deceuninck team-mates have plugged a heavy tempo on the climbs to weed out his slightly faster rivals? If the race comes back together, the Australian will fancy himself against a reduced group.

Milan powers home to take second win of Giro with thrilling Stage 11 sprint victory

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) took his second win at the Giro d’Italia 2024, powering to victory after a thrilling sprint finish on Stage 11.

After a chaotic and stressful run-in to Francavilla Al Mare, the Italian once again proved the strongest on the 207km route from Foiano Di Valfortore.

An almost incident free finale saw no splits in the general classification, as Tadej Pogacar maintained his grip on the maglia rosa. A late dart for bonus sprint seconds saw Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) reduce the gap to second place Dani Martinez (Bora-Hangrohe) to 16 seconds.
