How to watch the UEFA Europa League on TNT Sports and discovery+

Get ready to enjoy the UEFA Europa League on TNT Sports during the 2023-24 season as a host of top clubs from across Europe battle it out to succeed Sevilla as the champions of the prestigious competition.

Remarkably, it was Sevilla’s seventh win in Europe’s secondary competition. Mourinho had never lost a European final before that night, while the Spanish club had won all six of their previous UEFA Cup / UEFA Europa League finals – something simply had to give.

Barcelona, Ajax, Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, Lazio, Real Betis, Sporting, Juventus and Feyenoord were all among the big clubs involved in last year’s competition.

The UEFA Europa League final in the 2023-24 season will be played on May 22, 2024 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. West Ham United, Liverpool, Roma, Villarreal, Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta are all set to contest the competition this year.

This will be the 53rd season of the competition, and the 15th since it was rebranded from the UEFA Cup.

The winners of the competition will automatically qualify for the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League group stage, and also earn the right to play against the winners of that competition – which is also live on TNT Sports – in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup.

Havertz scores late winner to keep Arsenal’s title hopes alive

An 86th minute winner from Kai Havertz earned Arsenal a huge three points in their bid to win the title by beating Brentford 2-1.

Havertz guided home a late header from a Ben White cross to settle an edgy game that Arsenal had dominated.

A header from Declan Rice gave Arsenal an early lead, only for it to be wiped out after an error from Aaron Ramsdale in injury time in the first half. Yoan Wissa blindsided Ramsdale to charge down a clearance and send it into the net.

Ramsdale redeemed himself in the second half with two fine saves from Ivan Toney and James Collins, while Rice hit the crossbar as Arsenal probed for a winning goal.

Havertz’s late intervention made it eight wins in a row in the Premier League for Arsenal. They are now in first place in the table, with their next league game away to title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad.

TALKING POINT

Can the emotional energy behind Arsenal’s challenge take them to the title? There has been a lot of talk about the displays of emotion of Arsenal’s players, both this season and last, as they attempt to bring the title back to the club after two decades.

Whether it’s wild celebrations of goals well before victory is in the bag, or borrowing cameras to celebrate when it is, there is an almost febrile energy that is driving this current run of eight wins. It seems a hybrid of the youthful vitality of the squad and manager and a home crowd baying for the title drought to be over.

Many pointed to this being part of Arsenal’s undoing on the run-in last season; this time around, could they make it work in their favour? A huge staging post in the title challenge is up next when they visit Manchester City. At a similar juncture last season a flat Arsenal couldn’t lay a glove on City at the Etihad. This time around their frenzied, high octane approach might – with an element of controlled application – yield something more positive.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Martin Odegaard (Arsenal)

In the pocket between Brentford’s midfield and defence, Odegaard did what he pleased this evening. His adroit use of the ball, moved quickly from left to right and forward and back again, wore Brentford down over the course of the match.

PLAYER RATINGS

Arsenal: Ramsdale 6; White 7, Saliba 6, Gabriel 6, Kiwior 6; Rice 7, Jorginho 7, Odegaard 8; Saka 6, Havertz 7, Trossard 6

SUBS: Partey 6, Jesus 6, Smith Rowe, Nelson 6, Zinchenko 6

Brentford: Flekken 6; Roerslav 7, Jorgensen 6, Ajer 6, Collins 5, Lewis-Potter 6; Norgaard 6, Onyeka 5, Janelt 6; Wissa 7, Toney 7

SUBS: Maupay 6, Jensen 6, Ghoddos 6, Damsgaard 6, Yarmoliuk 6

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

19′ GOAL! ARSENAL 1 (RICE 19) BRENTFORD 0 There’s a goal for the Gunners though! It’s that man Rice again, as he rises near the penalty spot to meet a cross from White and guide a header into the bottom corner.

45+3′ GOAL! ARSENAL 1 BRENTFORD 1 (WISSA 45+3′) Oh my word, we’re level and it’s a shocking mistake! Arsenal knock it around at the back, just killing time, and roll it to Ramsdale in the six yard box. Ramsdale takes too many steps to line up a launch downfield, and Wissa slides in to block his kick; the ball ricochets into the net, and it’s one each! Gadzooks.

55′ WHAT AN EFFORT! Brentford hack a clearance out of defence, and from 40 yards out Toney guides a 40 yard lob at the Arsenal goal, with Ramsdale off his line. It’s a sunning effort, and produces a fine save from Ramsdale who palms it wide at full stretch for a corner. Had that cleared Ramsdale, it was a goal.

74′ CLANG! Rice almost gets a second! The corner is cleared to the edge of the D and Rice strokes a lazt side-footer to the top corner, which hits the point of post and bar and goes out with Flekken rooted. That was a gorgeous strike.

86′ GOAL! ARSENAL 2 (HAVERTZ 86) BRENTFORD 1 Arsenal lead! They work a patient move, and once more get White into a crossing position on the right byline. This time his cross is perfect, zipped onto the head of Havertz in the six yard box. Havertz thumps his header at goal, and Flekken gets a hand on it but can’t keep it out!

Arsenal draw up striker shortlist as Chelsea face transfer conundrum – Paper Round

Arsenal draw up striker shortlist

The Mirror reports that Arsenal want to sign a striker this summer, and while they are keen on Ivan Toney, there are other options.

Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres, Pedro Neto, Nico Williams and Martin Zubimendi are all being weighed up as possible reinforcements.

The paper explains: “Arsenal are long-term admirers of Brentford striker Toney who will face The Gunners at the Emirates on Saturday. Toney, 27, will only have one year left on his current deal at Brentford this summer and they are braced for an auction with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham watching developments.

“Brentford’s £80m price tag might be a factor in Arsenal’s thoughts but [Mikel] Arteta was specifically asked whether he could rule out a move for Toney this summer. “I don’t talk about any other player,” said Arteta, side stepping the question. “If not I’ll have to rule out every other player in the market because we’re linked with a lot of players.

“Arsenal are likely to move for a new centre forward this summer despite their remarkable record-breaking run of goal scoring which means they now have a far superior goal difference to title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. But Arsenal’s plans to shake up their forward line have not changed despite Kai Havertz’s impressive form as a false nine.

“The Gunners have also scouted RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres while Wolves winger Pedro Neto and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams are also on their radar. Arsenal remain keen on Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.”

Antony gives United transfer headache

Manchester United need to weigh up Antony’s future at Old Trafford as they look to meet financial regulations.

The Independent believes that unless there is profit somewhere, United will struggle to spend this summer.

The paper writes: “They may face different kind of losses where the second-most expensive signing in their history is concerned. If Antony has been a footballing problem, he is also a Financial Fair Play problem, a player who could impede a new regime’s ability to reshape the squad.

“Because if the recent signs are that even [Erik] Ten Hag may have given up on Antony, long after everyone else did, it is still likelier that any new manager would not want him. But if it is a statement of the obvious that United will never recoup the £85m they paid Ajax in 2022, the reality is that getting anything under £51m this summer would harm their ability to buy. So, in a different way, would keeping him.”

Chelsea face transfer conundrum

After years of heavy spending, Chelsea are another side who need to raise funds if they are to avoid punishment.

They lost more than £90 million in their last accounting period, and so need to be careful.

The Telegraph notes: “Chelsea are facing fresh doubts over their ability to meet profit and sustainability rules after it was revealed that the club made a £90.1 million loss before tax in the 12-month period up to June 30, 2023.

“The latest loss, on the back of the previous year’s £121.4 million loss, was revealed in the accounts of BlueCo 22, the company through which Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

“BlueCo 22, which also owns French club Strasbourg, announced a staggering £653 million loss after tax for the period of March 2, 2022 through to June 30, 2023.

“Chelsea’s latest set of full accounts are yet to be posted, but the £90.1 million pre-tax loss will cause more fears that the club could be in breach of profit and sustainability rules or may have to raise cash through player sales.

“Chelsea, however, remain insistent the club can operate within the Premier League’s PSR and Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules, saying: “The club continues to balance success on the field together with the financial imperatives of complying with Uefa and Premier League financial regulations. The club has complied with these financial regulations since their inception in 2012 and expects to do so for the foreseeable future.”

Tuchel ready for Chelsea

The Sun reports that Thomas Tuchel would be prepared to come back to Chelsea.

The German left the club two years ago but Todd Boehly has struggled to find an adequate replacement, and he could now return to Stamford Bridge.

“Thomas Tuchel is ready to consider a return to Chelsea this summer,” the paper states.

“The German, 50, was sacked by Todd Boehly in September 2022 just a few months after the American’s takeover.

“Tuchel subsequently took over at Bayern Munich last March, but it has already been confirmed that he will be leaving at the end of this season.

“With the former Blues boss set to be out of work, he is said to be targeting a return to the Premier League.

“Tuchel would be open to returning to Stamford Bridge, should he and Boehly be able to settle their previous differences.

“Prior to Tuchel’s departure, he and his boss endured a strained relationship.”

Arteta calls match at Spurs 'the most exciting' challenge for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal’s visit to Tottenham is his ‘most exciting’ challenge as he looks for Champions League qualification.

A win for Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will ensure that they play in the premier European tournament next season, but they come up against a Spurs side who are improving under Antonio Conte.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Arteta said of the job in hand that: “It’s the most exciting one, probably. But we had others when we played finals against Chelsea and Liverpool in the FA Cup and the Community Shield, it was the same.

Chelsea survive scare to take WSL title after thrilling final day

08/05/2022 AT 13:08

“When you have the opportunity to achieve one of your objectives in the season, you just cannot wait to play the game because this is a job, and the work you have done throughout the season to try to earn it.”

The chance to win at the club’s North London rivals is not factored into their motivation for Thursday, the Spaniard claimed.

“The message is clear, if we win against them we are in the Champions League next season,” he said.

“You don’t need any motivation or to tell them anything more than that. The opportunity is there, we are going to play and go for it like we always do. It’s how we have got into this position, and it’s how we are going to approach it.

“The winning factor is always the best feeling! It’s different obviously as a player and manager, but in every occasion, it’s not just about winning, it’s about how you win those matches and the experience that you go through throughout the 90 minutes, especially when you play at home in front of your crowd.”

Discussing the difficulty posed by Conte’s Tottenham side compared to the previous derby this season, Arteta was undecided, telling the press: “I don’t know, let’s see tomorrow.

“It’s true that it’s many months ago that game, and we are much closer to the end, and the game has taken a much different level of importance because of the situation that we both are (in).”
