Bayer Leverkusen are fresh off the heels of completing a fairytale story after they won the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history.

A commanding 5-0 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday clinched the title and extended their unbeaten streak to 43 games that includes 29 in the league and a deep Europa League run.

There could be more success on the cards as Xabi Alonso eyes a potential treble in his first full season at BayArena. They’ll be a step closer to that reality with a win over West Ham.

Alonso’s all-conquering outfit beat West Ham 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final. It took them 83 minutes to score their first goal through Jonas Hofmann with Victor Boniface adding the finishing touch in the 91st minute.

But Leverkusen had roughly 73% possession throughout the game and if not for a number of key saves from Lukasz Fabianski, the Hammers would likely have suffered an even bigger deficit.

David Moyes’ woes worsened following the Leverkusen loss with a 2-0 defeat to Fulham at the London Stadium in the Premier League, and his jaded squad have a mountain to climb if they are too reach the semi-finals.

They can only hope that the high of winning the Bundesliga may avert Leverkusen’s focus off course, but that’s unlikely.

“So krass war es selten”: Bayers 2:0 gegen West Ham als Spiel der Extreme

Das Hinspiel zwischen Bayer 04 und West Ham United im Viertelfinale der Europa League war eine Partie der Extreme. Zum einen, weil sich die Hammers äußerst defensiv präsentierten. Zum anderen, weil die Werkself in Ballbesitz für Superlative sorgte.

Lange dominiert, spät gejubelt: Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Es war legitim, aber alles andere als ansehnlich, mit welcher taktischen Marschroute West Ham United in Leverkusen zum Erfolg kommen wollte. Mit einer Fünferkette und extrem tief postiert verstellten die Engländer Bayer 04 die Räume. Teilweise agierte die Elf von David Moyes so defensiv, dass vor der Pause Leverkusens Abwehrchef Jonathan Tah nah am gegnerischen Strafraumkreis (!) als letzte Absicherung der Gastgeber agierte.

Purer Beton, der ein attraktives Spiel nur schwer möglich machte. “In der krassen Form, dass sich Mannschaften hinten reinstellen, haben wir es auch nicht so oft gehabt. Sie haben sehr tief gestanden. Da musst du Geduld haben, immer wieder anlaufen. Das ist manchmal etwas zäh und man verzweifelt manchmal auch ein bisschen”, erklärte Joker und Matchwinner Jonas Hofmann.

Der Spielbericht

Doch Bayer hat solche Situationen schon oft erfolgreich bewältigt. So verweist der Nationalspieler auf das Wissen um die eigene Stärke, “unsere Erfahrung, die wir immer wieder gemacht haben, hinten heraus Tore zu schießen. Diese Momente nutzen wir gerade sehr für uns.”

Mit welcher Ruhe und Konsequenz Bayer 04 dabei den eigenen Ansatz des Kombinationsfußballs durchzieht, ist beeindruckend und spiegelt sich auch in den Daten zu den einseitigen 90 Minuten gegen den Tabellensiebten der Premier League wider. Brachten diese doch wieder einige bemerkenswerte Zahlen und auch neue Bestmarken hervor.

78 Ballkontakte im gegnerischen Strafraum

So gab Leverkusen gegen West Ham 33 Torschüsse ab – das gelang in dieser Saison zuvor nur einer Mannschaft: Leverkusen selbst beim 3:2 gegen Qarabag Agdam im Achtelfinale. Sonst knackte noch kein anderer Europa-League-Teilnehmer die Marke von 30 Abschlüssen.

Elf Torschüsse kamen auf den Kasten von West-Ham-Keeper Lukasz Fabianski – noch keine andere Mannschaft brachte in dieser Europa-League-Saison so viele Abschlüsse auf das Tor des jeweiligen Gegners.

Leverkusen hatte gegen West Ham 78 Ballkontakte im gegnerischen Strafraum, das gab es seit deren Erfassung zur Europa-League-Saison 2016/17 noch nie.

Leverkusen ließ nur einen gegnerischen Torschuss zu – das gelang zuvor noch keiner Mannschaft in dieser Saison. Zuvor lag die Bestmarke bei nur drei zugelassenen Torschüssen des Gegners. Das gelang unter anderem Leverkusen am 3. Gruppen-Spieltag beim 5:1 gegen Qarabag Agdam.

Bereits zum fünften Mal in dieser Saison hatte Leverkusen in dieser Europa-League-Saison eine Passquote von über 90 Prozent (dieses Mal 90,7%) – sonst hatten nur die AC Mailand (3) und Brighton & Hove Albion (2) öfter als einmal eine Passquote von mindestens 90 Prozent.

Leverkusen hatte 73 Prozent Ballbesitz – das wurde nur von Brighton & Hove Albion am 1. Spieltag (75%) sowie vom FC Liverpool im Achtelfinal-Rückspiel gegen Sparta Prag (77%) übertroffen. Ballmagnet war Granit Xhaka mit 157 Ballkontakten – das wurde nur von Brightons Lewis Dunk am 3. Spieltag getoppt (167).

Das Hinspiel-Ergebnis: Gut, aber gefährlich

Zahlen, die eine eindeutige Sprache sprechen, die Bayers brutale Überlegenheit dokumentieren. Die aber nicht zu dem Fehlschluss führen sollen, dass es beim Rückspiel in London eine ähnlich einseitige Angelegenheit geben werde, wie Mittelfeld-Stratege Xhaka mahnt.

“Wir müssen in London probieren, ein Tor zu erzielen. Mit dann drei Toren insgesamt können wir es schaffen”, erklärt der ehemalige Arsenal-Profi warnend, “ich rede aus Erfahrung. Ich habe sieben Jahre dort gegen West Ham gespielt. Ich weiß, wie schwer es da ist. Sie haben 60.000, 70.000 Zuschauer im Rücken – das wird eine andere Mannschaft sein am Donnerstag. Die werden kommen, die werden gepusht von den eigenen Fans.”

Und so betont Xhaka nochmal, dass der Drops trotz des einseitigen Hinspiels noch nicht gelutscht ist. “2:0 ist ein gutes Ergebnis, aber nicht perfekt. Es ist auch ein ganz gefährliches Ergebnis, deswegen müssen wir konzentriert bleiben.” Wozu das führen kann, haben Xhaka und Co. im Hinspiel demonstriert.

Xabi Alonsos trockener Konter auf Moyes’ fragwürdige Kritik

Im Viertelfinal-Hinspiel der Europa League musste Bayer 04 gegen West Ham United lange auf die erlösenden Tore warten. Die Engländer erwiesen sich mit ihrer defensiven Spielweise als harte Nuss – und ihr Trainer David Moyes als schlechter Verlierer.

Es war ein Geduldsspiel. Mal wieder. Selbst West Ham United, der Tabellensiebte der Premier League, sah nur diesen Weg, gegen die Leverkusener Passmaschine zu bestehen. Und so stand Bayer 04 beim 2:0-Sieg, der durch späte Tore der Joker Jonas Hofmann (83.) und Victor Boniface (90.+1) zustande kam, wie so oft einer extrem tief stehenden gegnerischen Abwehrmauer gegenüber.

“Wir wussten, dass West Ham uns nicht hoch pressen würde. Sie haben zum ersten Mal mit einer Fünferkette gespielt, normal spielen sie in der Premier League Viererkette. Das zeigt einmal mehr den Respekt, den die Gegner vor uns haben”, analysierte Sechser Granit Xhaka: “Aber wir haben genug Geduld und genug Qualität gehabt.”

Der Spielbericht

So blieb Bayer wieder über die komplette Spieldauer bei sich, ließ sich nicht von der eigenen Spielidee abbringen und siegte am Ende hochverdient. “Es war nicht einfach, Chancen zu erspielen”, urteilte ein zufriedener Xabi Alonso nachher, der von der destruktiven Spielweise der Hammers nicht überrascht war: “Viele Mannschaft in der Premiere League spielen so, also haben wir es etwas erwartet.”

Attraktiv war der Ansatz von West Ham nicht, aber eben durchaus legitim. Doch sorgte der mutlose Auftritt der Engländer, die nur eine echte Torchance mit ihrem einzigen Schuss auf Tor besaßen, noch nur für Schulterzucken, so riefen die Ausführungen von Gäste-Trainer David Moyes einzig Kopfschütteln hervor.

Dieser hatte die Reaktionen der Leverkusener nach einem rüden Foul von Lucas Paqueta vor der Bayer-Ersatzbank in der 21. Minute scharf kritisiert. Der Brasilianer hatte nach einer Attacke an Amine Adli die Gelbe Karte gesehen und fehlt damit gesperrt im Rückspiel.

“Das Verhalten der Bank war schändlich”, wetterte Moyes ungefragt bei der Pressekonferenz, “das fand ich enttäuschend. Die Bank hätte den Schiedsrichter die Entscheidung treffen lassen sollen.” Eine äußerst fragwürdige Kritik, war das Foul Paquetas, der drei Minute später nach einem “Stempeln” gegen Florian Wirtz zwingend die Gelb-Rot hätte sehen müssen, doch eher am Rand zur Roten Karte gewesen. So erschien Moyes’ Attacke als ein billiges Ablenkungsmanöver vom eigenen ängstlichen Auftritt.

Dementsprechend trocken fiel auch Xabi Alonsos Antwort auf die Vorwürfe aus. “Was? Schändlich?”, fragte der Baske verwundert nach, “die Gelbe Karte war völlig verdient. David hat oft mit dem Vierten Offiziellen gesprochen. Das machen wir alle, auch ich. Das kann man nicht als schändlich bezeichnen. Ich habe Respekt vor David. Der Schiedsrichter hat die richtige Entscheidung getroffen.” Um mit dem letzten Satz eine klare Spitze zu setzen: “Wir haben unsere Sache gemacht und uns nicht auf ihre Bank konzentriert.”

Die emotionalen Bilder aus Dublin hatten sich bestimmt einige schon ausgemalt. Dort sollte Jürgen Klopp am 22. Mai seinen letzten Abpfiff als Trainer des FC Liverpool hören, die Europa-League-Trophäe in den Himmel recken und dann selbst in die Luft geworfen werden. Doch nun scheint Klopp gar nicht erst nach Dublin zu reisen.

Durch das 0:3 gegen Atalanta Bergamo am Donnerstagabend, der ersten Heimniederlage seit dem Februar 2023, hängt Liverpools Einzug ins Europa-League-Halbfinale an einem derart dünnen Faden, dass auch Klopp, eigentlich professioneller Optimist, bei RTL eingestehen musste: “Im Moment sind die natürlich durch, wir sind ja nicht doof.”

Mit hoher Aggressivität und riskantem Mann-gegen-Mann-Verteidigen erzwang Atalanta unzählige Fehler bei den Reds, die teils ohne jede Ordnung über den Platz rannten. “Ich hab’s nicht wiedererkannt, das war echt seltsam”, analysierte Klopp schonungslos. “Das können wir nicht schönreden, das geht nicht ohne Alkohol.” Doch welchen Anteil hatte er selbst?

Sechs Wechsel hatte er für die Partie vorgenommen und dabei auch Torjäger Mohamed Salah geschont. Weil er das im engen Premier-League-Rennen kaum gemacht hätte, ließ sich das als klares Signal dafür werten, dass die Europa League gerade nur der zweitwichtigste Wettbewerb ist – und womöglich fasste auch manch Profi das so auf, zumal die bisherige Europa-League-Saison eher ein Spaziergang für die Reds war.

Klopps Rochade: “Ich würde es genauso wieder tun”

“Wenn man verliert, sind deine personellen Änderungen immer fragwürdig”, verstand Klopp diese Interpretation “zu 100 Prozent”, sagte aber mit Blick auf das Heimspiel gegen Crystal Palace am Sonntag (15 Uhr) auch: “Ich würde ich es genauso wieder tun.” Zur Pause korrigierte Klopp mit den Einwechslungen von Salah, Andy Robertson und Dominik Szoboszlai, machte den Auftritt seiner Elf damit aber kaum besser: “Wir haben übrigens die zweite Halbzeit mit 0:2 verloren, die erste mit 0:1. Also keine Ahnung, welche besser war.”

Für das Rückspiel in Bergamo am kommenden Donnerstag (21 Uhr, beide LIVE! bei kicker) empfiehlt TV-Experte und Liverpool-Legende Jamie Carragher Klopp, komplett auf die zweite Reihe zu setzen und alle Konzentration auf die Liga zu legen, das sei der einzige “Trost” nach dem 0:3. Doch das wird der Trainer kaum tun. “Wir werden versuchen, dort zu gewinnen, und dann schauen wir weiter”, war Klopp noch nicht bereit aufzugeben. Im November 2020 hatte Liverpool in der Champions-League-Gruppenphase mit 5:0 in Bergamo gewonnen – mit Salah und allen anderen Stammkräften.

Klopp nach Heimpleite: “Es muss sich jetzt schlecht anfühlen”

33 Spiele lang war der FC Liverpool zuhause wettbewerbsübergreifend ungeschlagen (28 Siege, 5 Remis). Dann aber kam Atalanta Bergamo am Donnerstagabend an die Anfield Road und sorgte für eine faustdicke Überraschung.

Ungläubiger Blick: Jürgen Klopp war im Spiel gegen Atalanta immer wieder von seinem eigenen Team überrascht – nicht positiv.

“Die Leistung von manchen heute war nach dem Motto: ‘Hoppla, wow, ich wusste gar nicht, dass sie so überhaupt spielen können'”, erklärte Jürgen Klopp bei TNT Sports nach der 0:3-Heimpleite im Viertelfinalhinspiel der Europa League gegen die Italiener. “Viele sahen in manchen Momenten regelrecht verloren aus.” Der Knackpunkt im Spiel für den Coach der Reds war die fehlende taktische Disziplin bei seinem Team, das Bergamo immer wieder sehr viel Raum in Tornähe eröffnete. “Die taktische Disziplin war nicht da, wir haben fußballerisch die Nerven verloren. Gerade wenn der Gegner so aggressiv ist, musst in den wichtigen Zonen offensiv die Zweikämpfe gewinnen.”

Über die vergleichsweise eher maue Stimmung an der Anfield Road, wo die Liverpool-Fans als Protest gegen neue Ticketpreise unter anderem keine Fahnen mitgebracht hatten, meinte Klopp indes: “Man kann nicht hier einfach das Licht anknipsen und erwarten, dass automatisch eine tolle Atmosphäre da ist. Dafür muss man auch etwas tun”, so der 56-Jährige. Dies aber habe sein Team an diesem Abend nicht geschafft. Die Pleite, so Klopp, das habe er auch seinen Spielern gesagt, “muss sich jetzt schlecht anfühlen, denn es war schlecht”. Gerade aus diesem Grund aber erwartet der Coach im Premier-League-Heimspiel gegen Crystal Palace (Sonntag, 15 Uhr) eine Reaktion.

Klopp: “Solange wir noch spielen, sind sie nicht weiter”

Bergamo dagegen erwischte einen nahezu perfekten Europapokalabend, an dem defensiv wie offensiv nahezu alles gelang. Im erst dritten Aufeinandertreffen beider Klubs in einem internationalen Wettbewerb gelang Atalanta damit im zweiten Auswärtsspiel der zweite Sieg an der Anfield Road. Am 25. November 2020 hatten die Italiener in der Gruppenphase der Champions Leagie in Liverpool – inklusive eines Treffers von Robin Gosens – mit 2:0 gewonnen. Aus zwei Partien beim LFC holte Atalanta also bislang zwei Siege mit insgesamt 5:0 Toren.

Apropos fünf Tore: Sein bislang einziges Spiel in Bergamo hatte Liverpool damals wenige Wochen vor der Heimniederlage gewonnen – und zwar am 3. November 2020 mehr als klar mit 5:0. Ein gutes Omen? In jedem Fall hofft Klopp durchaus noch aufs Weiterkommen – auch wenn er um die Schwere der Aufgabe weiß: “Können wir kontern und dort gewinnen? Ja, wenn wir gut spielen, ist das möglich. Können wir 3:0 gewinnen? Keine Ahnung. Es fühlt sich jetzt so an, als ob sie schon durch sind. Aber solange wir noch spielen, sind sie es nicht.”
