Real Madrid win dramatic shoot-out despite City dominance to progress

Andriy Lunin was the hero as Real Madrid overcame Manchester City on penalties to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

The goalkeeper saved from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, before Antonio Rudiger netted the decisive spot-kick as the 14-time winners dethroned the reigning champions.

Following a 3-3 draw in last week’s pulsating first leg, Madrid struck first at the Etihad Stadium as Rodrygo put them ahead inside 12 minutes, slotting home at the second attempt after Ederson saved his initial effort.

City looked to respond with Erling Haaland’s header hitting the crossbar, and Lunin making strong saves to deny fierce efforts from Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish.

However, the hosts finally broke their visitors’ stubborn resistance 14 minutes from time when Rudiger cleared Jeremy Doku’s cross straight to De Bruyne, who calmly lifted the ball into the roof of the net.

Pep Guardiola’s side continued to dominate proceedings, but they could not find that winning goal as the tie edged towards a penalty shoot-out.

Although Ederson denied Luka Modric with Madrid’s first kick to give City the early advantage, Lunin came up trumps to deny Silva and Kovacic and swing the shoot-out back in favour of the visitors, who subsequently prevailed with Rudiger’s successful final kick setting up a last-four date with Bayern Munich.

Talking Point – Dominant but wasteful City pay the penalty

Pep Guardiola will be wondering how his side are not in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. City dominated large periods of the contest with 67.2 per cent of the possession.

They completed 846 passes – more than double their opponents’ tally (373) – out-shot Madrid by 33 to eight, and had 88 touches in the opposition box to the visitors’ 12.

However, the reigning champions, who also had an xG of 2.73, were punished for not converting their dominance into goals.

Indeed, Madrid simply hung on and hung on before holding their nerve from the penalty spot, and a 15th European crown is now a real possibility.

Player of the Match – Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid)

Honourable mentions go to the likes of De Bruyne and Rudiger, but Lunin’s shootout exploits just about give him the edge.

Although, the Madrid stopper did not only shine when it came to penalties, as he had to be alert to wave after wave of City attacks, and indeed he was, keeping out eight of their nine shots on target throughout the second leg.

Lunin then took centre stage in the shoot-out by guessing correctly to thwart Silva and Kovacic, paving the way for Rudiger to send Madrid through to their 33rd semi-final in this competition.

Match Highlights

12′ – GOAL!!! MANCHESTER CITY 0-1 (3-4) REAL MADRID (RODRYGO): The visitors strike first in the second leg! A neat move involving Bellingham and Valverde sees Vinicius cross for Rodrygo. Although Ederson denies the latter’s first attempt, the Madrid winger reacts quickly to slot home the rebound.

19′ – OFF THE BAR: Although Lunin pushes De Bruyne’s cross away, the danger is not over for Madrid as Akanji sends the ball back in. Haaland’s looping header clips the crossbar, and Silva cannot react quickly enough to turn in the rebound.

47′ – GOOD HIT: City make a purposeful start to the second half and force a corner. Foden’s corner is punched out to Grealish, whose fierce volley is beaten away by Lunin.

76′ – GOAL!!! MANCHESTER CITY 1-1 (4-4) REAL MADRID (DE BRUYNE): The hosts finally have the breakthrough, and they level the tie! Rudiger has been magnificent tonight, but he fails to clear properly from Doku’s low cross into the six-yard box. Instead, he directs the ball straight to De Bruyne, who takes a touch before lifting it into the roof of the net.

78′ – GREAT EFFORT: De Bruyne fancies another goal as he cuts inside onto his left foot, before taking aim from the edge of the box. It flashes whiskers over the crossbar with Lunin struggling to get there.

82′ – WHAT A CHANCE: Doku feeds Akanji, who sends a low ball across the box towards the unmarked De Bruyne. However, he fires his first-time effort over from 12 yards out.

105+2′ – CHANCE: City go to sleep as Diaz whips a dangerous ball in from the left flank. Rudiger ghosts into the six-yard box, but cannot keep his first-time shot under the crossbar. SAVE! MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 REAL MADRID: Modric is first up for Madrid, but Ederson guesses correctly as he dives to his right and keeps out the kick.

SAVE! MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 REAL MADRID: That’s a poor penalty from Silva, who chips the ball down the middle of the goal and straight into Lunin’s arms.

SAVE! MANCHESTER CITY 1-1 REAL MADRID: Lunin gets down to his right to keep out Kovacic, and Madrid have the advantage.

GOAL!!! MANCHESTER CITY 3-4 REAL MADRID (RUDIGER): Madrid are through to the semi-finals as Rudiger, who has been magnificent in the heart of the defence, drills home the decisive penalty. The visitors have been on the back foot for most of the match, but held on and held on, and have reaped their rewards. They will play Bayern Munich in another blockbuster Champions League semi-final.

Key Stats

Guardiolas Hünen-Show

Keine Experimente ohne Haaland

Exclusive: Bellingham ‘loving every aspect’ of life in Madrid as he plots City downfall

Jude Bellingham has exclusively told TNT Sports that he loves being the main man at Real Madrid.

The England international joined Los Blancos last summer in a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund, and has starred in his debut campaign in Spain.

Thirty-four appearances have yielded 20 goals, four of which have come in the club’s charge to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

And with the tie finely poised at 3-3, Bellingham is hoping he can steal the show on his return to England, as

“It’s brilliant,” he said. “I’m loving it, every aspect of it. The playing side of it, out in the city with the fans, having family and friends over is really nice as well. Just trying to involve myself in a new culture is massive.

“I think I had brilliant conversations with a couple of teams in England. When Real Madrid came in, it was a bit of a no-brainer.

“The things they said, the way they made me feel, it couldn’t be repeated by anybody else. I think now, I’m reaping the rewards of that this year. I feel so grateful every time I go to training.

“It’s a responsibility I’ve always wanted, but I didn’t think it would come as quickly as it has. When I was watching the game last year, I was on my sofa in Dortmund and I was already out!

picture

‘More mature than his age’ – ‘Leader’ Bellingham praised by Rudiger and Ancelotti

“You do think ‘I can’t wait to get to play in games like that one day’ and learn off players that I’m now learning off. I feel so fortunate, to be honest, and so grateful for how everyone’s received me and the guidance they’ve given me, and hopefully I can repay them.”

Federico Valverde’s late goal earned Real a 3-3 draw in the first leg at the Bernabeu, meaning the tie is all-square ahead of the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

The winner will go through to face either Bayern Munich or Arsenal in the semi-finals.

But progressing will not be easy for Los Blancos, given their opponents are the defending champions, .

Real Madrid, of course, have won the trophy a record 14 times – for Bellingham, though, this is a first tilt at European glory.

“It would mean the world to me,” he continued. “These are the games you prepare for all season. The games that everyone wants to play in, everyone talks about. It would be great to deliver, for my team-mates, for my manager and for my family who are coming to watch me.”

And the clamour for tickets towards Bellingham has been huge.

“Honestly, I’ve had to turn my phone off a fair few times,” he joked.

The 20-year-old will be hoping to put on a show for the lucky family and friends he has in attendance, and is confident of progressing to the next round.

Indeed, despite conceding three goals in the first leg, Bellingham believes Real put in a solid performance – one that they can build upon in Manchester.

“I didn’t think there would be that many goals,” he added. “I thought it would be a bit closer, but you’ve got to adapt to what happens.

“The key thing is we go into this game all square. Whether you want to break it down or not, it’s technically 0-0. Whoever wins it takes it and goes through. That’s a good way to think about it instead of worrying about what’s happened.

“You prepare for it like it’s a new game. You take the lessons from that one and get ready to compete again.

“It was a good performance in terms of our structure defensively. We didn’t allow them a lot.

“If you look at the goals they scored, they’re three brilliant goals. That kind of thing, you take confidence from knowing they didn’t carve you open and our shape was generally quite good.

“I think it’s up to us now to be a little bit more aggressive and go after the game a little bit more. You trust the staff so much, and the manager so much, that whatever they kind of say will help us win the game, they’ve analysed it and you trust it and you go ahead with it.

“I just can’t wait for it really. I’m getting a little bit irritated and getting ready to go. I really look forward to these kind of games. It’s the games that you sign for a club like this for.

“To be here and to be nervous or not want to play doesn’t make any sense. I’ll just got out there and try and play my game and the lads will do the same.

“They [Manchester City] are definitely a puzzle. I think I played here four times with Dortmund and obviously once now with Madrid, and I think each time you face a different team.

“Not necessarily the players, but they way they’re set up and the areas which they want to attack and kind of hurt you.

“That’s so interesting as a player, because it’s almost a game within a game and trying to work out what to do to win the game. It’s really interesting and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Exclusive: Guardiola demands Man City ‘do better’ in second leg with Madrid

Pep Guardiola is demanding an improvement from his Manchester City players, if they want to book a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

That was the first time the English club had conceded three in one game since a thrilling draw with Tottenham in the Premier League before Christmas.

And Guardiola exclusively told TNT Sports that they will have to defend more resolutely to have any chance of progressing.

“Honestly, we will have to do better than in Madrid if we want to go through,” he said.

“We were fantastic, 3-3 is an incredible result, the guys gave everything, but we have to adjust something that was not as good as we should do. But at home, we feel comfortable in trying to adjust it.”

City are defending champions in the tournament, .

They knocked Madrid out en route to lifting the European Cup last season, and should they progress in this tie, it would be the fourth time in a row they have reached the last four of the Champions League.

“The excitement is huge,” Guardiola continued. “I have a tension; nervous and happiness and all the mix of feelings I have right now.

“I have now prepared the last training before the game and with our people, we are safe.

“We will be, I think, sold out and I just ask them [the fans], in the bad moments, support us. Make some noise. Be there all the time until the end.

“The guys [players] deserve it. The chance to do it four times in a row, that proves that what they have done for this club. They deserve the support unconditionally.”

Los Blancos are actually winless in their previous five visits to the Etihad Stadium, .

They arrive in Manchester in form though, beating Mallorca 1-0 win at the weekend to ensure they are eight points clear at the top of La Liga.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti is also well known to Guardiola, with the pair having locked horns on 11 previous occasions.

It is the City boss who has come out on top in six of those clashes, losing just three times, but he still holds the Real boss in the highest of regard.

“Look at his career,” he added. “He’s won everywhere. I think he has an incredible sense of what they have to do, what is going to happen.

“Otherwise, you cannot stay for a long, long, long time, like being in Italy, Spain, England and France. He’s been a success everywhere.

“It’s impossible to have a sense of the quality, the awareness of the game, the intuition. Impossible. He’s older than me and always I learn from the managers.

“Not just with Carlo. We played the last game against Luton with Rob [Edwards] and I learn.

“So, when people say ‘how do you feel now, since you arrive?’ I feel better. I’m a better manager, just because I’ve been there many times.”

“Verwirrung” vorbei: Gvardiols plötzliche Torgefahr kein Zufall

England (4 fixe Teilnehmer): FC Arsenal, FC Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa

Spanien (4): Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, FC Girona, Atletico Madrid

Deutschland (4): Bayer Leverkusen, FC Bayern, VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig

Italien (4): Inter Mailand, AC Mailand, Juventus Turin, FC Bologna

Frankreich (3): Paris Saint-Germain, Stade Brest, AS Monaco

Niederlande (2): PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord Rotterdam

Portugal (1): Sporting Lissabon

Belgien (1): RSC Anderlecht

Schottland (1): Celtic Glasgow
