Villa drop points in dramatic draw, Luton snatch late winner to boost survival hopes

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa suffered a blow to their top-four hopes despite leading by two goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Brentford at Villa Park.

Thomas Frank left Ivan Toney on the bench, which gave Watkins the chance to impress as the pair compete for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Watkins got off to a fine start on his return from injury with a goal to put the hosts ahead when his close-range header narrowly crossed the line at the front post.

A minute into the second half, Morgan Rogers brilliantly doubled Villa’s lead when he latched onto Youri Tielemans’ through ball before lashing a strike into the bottom-right corner.

Mathias Jorgensen pulled a goal back for Brentford, scrappily turning in Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross, before the visitors completed the comeback two minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo’s volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Remarkably, Brentford took the lead shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa tapped Sergio Reguilon’s dangerous cross into an empty net.

However, Watkins grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left on the clock to save Unai Emery’s side from defeat and earn what could be an invaluable point.

The result leaves Villa just three points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in fifth place, and Spurs have two games in hand.

Hatters claim big win

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town came from behind to secure a huge three points in their bid for survival following a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road.

After a goalless opening period, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead five minutes into the second half with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards out.

Luton hit back through Jordan Clark, who made an excellent run through the midfield before laying the ball to Luke Berry, who was almost dispossessed, but Clark was in the right place at the right time to wrap his foot around the loose ball and fire past Neto.

As the game entered added time, substitute Cauley Woodrow floated an inviting ball into the box which Luton captain Carlton Morris turned in from close range.

Rob Edwards’ side remain in the bottom three, but are now six points clear of 19th place Burnley and level on points with Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Hammers win after late drama

West Ham United came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolves, despite some late VAR controversy.

Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead from the spot before Lucas Paqueta did the same for The Hammers as the game entered the latter stages.

James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead in memorable fashion, as his corner from the left swirled over everyone in the box and directly into the top-right corner.

Wolves thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Max Kilman’s header was dramatically ruled out for offside.

Newcastle claim narrow win

In west London, Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal gave Newcastle a 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage for their first away victory since February.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead through Fabian Schar who found the net from a tight angle, but the goal was ruled out due to Dan Burn’s foul on Calvin Bassey in the build-up.

But Fulham could not keep Newcastle out for much longer, as Guimaraes fired Newcastle ahead in the 81st minute.

Everton win relegation battle with Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat 10-man Burnley 1-0 for their first victory in 10 matches.

As Sean Dyche’s side held on for a much-needed three points, Dara O’Shea was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Dwight McNeil.

West Ham startet stark in Hälfte zwei
