Udinese v Roma abandoned after Ndicka collapses during match

Roma’s Serie A match against Udinese was abandoned after defender Evan Ndicka collapsed on the pitch during the game.

With the score at 1-1 and with 18 minutes of normal time remaining, the Ivory Coast international collapsed off the ball and was stretchered off the pitch.

Following a 10-minute period of talks, both clubs, in conjunction with referee Luca Pairetto, made a decision to suspend the match, with the decision greeted with applause inside Stadio Friuli.

Roma later posted on X that Ndicka was conscious and is receiving treatment at hospital.

“Following Evan Ndicka’s illness on the pitch, Udinese v Roma was suspended,” said the statement.

“The player is conscious and was transported to hospital for checks.

“Come on Evan, we’re all with you.”

Former Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra had put hosts Udinese in front, before Romelu Lukaku equalised for Daniele De Rossi’s side.

Ndicka, 24, arrived at the Giallorossi on a free transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer after beginning his career at French side Auxerre.

He was also part of the Ivory Coast side that won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring in every minute of every game at the tournament as The Elephants beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final.

Roma are back in action on Thursday in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg at home to AC Milan, after securing a 1-0 first-leg victory at the San Siro.

‘No photo finish needed today’ – Pidcock banishes ghosts of 2021

Pidcock outsprinted Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) after an enthralling race saw favourite Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin–Deceuninck) miss the key move.

Back in 2021, Pidcock was involved in a remarkable photo finish that saw him judged to have finished second behind Wout van Aert. Later analysis only added more confusion when it was claimed that the camera had not been properly set up.

Had the result been different that day, Sunday’s win would have seen him become just the eighth man in history to be a double champion of the one-day classic, something he felt comfortable joking about after his victory.

“I was going to say ‘it’s great to win for the second time’ but that might create some controversy,” he said.

He later added to reporters, including Eurosport: “It feels super nice and there’s no photo finish needed today!”

Pidcock underlined the fact that he has faced real challenges this campaign.

He said: “It feels really good, this year’s been so tough. I made big sacrifices at the start of the year, been away from home so much, so now to finally put it together, to get the hands in the air means a lot.”

‘No photo finish needed today’ – Pidcock banishes ghosts of 2021

Doubling down on the theme of challenges, Pidcock made reference to his debut at Paris-Roubaix last weekend, admitting that he was still feeling the effects. He showed off large blisters on his hands on social media and admitted before Sunday’s race that he had arrived without sufficient preparation.

He said: “My hand after Roubaix, this week I was struggling to sprint. I had a lot of shoulder pain so I couldn’t hold my bars properly, so I was not so confident but it was how it was going to end up.”

With the spring calendar still packed, Pidcock is looking forward to more chances to add to his palmarès.

He said: “Now the pressure’s off, we can just go and race and do our best, and dare I say enjoy them [the remainder of the spring classics]. It probably won’t be so enjoyable but a big relief.”

Keulen wins first T100, Long recovers from ‘moments of panic’ to come second

Youri Keulen claimed his first T100 victory after emerging victorious in Singapore, in a podium completed by Sam Long and Pieter Heemeryck.

Keulen was at his imperious best until crossing the line on the run, where he collapsed before being tended to by medics.

The Dutchman is believed to be in safe hands after being overcome with exhaustion following a gruelling race in the Far East.

It was also a memorable day for the American, Long, who was overjoyed with his own display, despite being handed a 30-second penalty on the run and continuing his wait for a first T100 victory.

Long was penalised in the swimming section of the race after leaving his swim kit out of the box during the transition to the bike race.

Double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee was also given a 30-second penalty for a late dismount on the bike and eventually succumbed to a DNF after appearing to injure his calf.

Speaking after the race, he said in quotes published by protriathles.org: “(It was an) excellent race. Believe it or not, I was quite happy with my swim. I just paced it and focused on keeping my body temperature cool because if you get overheated there, it’s a long day.

“I’ve always been known for biking strong, but I didn’t really show that so much on the bike. I think my bike was still impressive and strong and I got myself into the race on the bike but it’s the run that I think I really showcased my strength and, to be honest, I was just having a super fun day out there and just in my own zone, in my own process, in the flow state.

“And it just all came together. I tried not to think about what the gap was. On the bike especially you got to see everyone twice per lap, right? So it’s very obvious. It really puts it right in your face how far back you are. But I actually said to myself: ‘Don’t look at how far back they are, just execute your mission and see what happens by the end of the day.”

Gentle beats Charles-Barclay for Singapore T100 win

Meanwhile, Heemeryck, admits he is not optimum condition, but the Belgian was pleased to claim a consecutive podium finish in this event.

“Last year I was a little bit better, but maybe it is earlier in the season so I’m not in the shape that I had hoped to be in already. But it’s a long season and I’ve finished two times on the podium here so it’s very good. But second to third, so next time I have to come back for first.

“It’s much more fun [with more races this season]. It will be a very big season, but it’s only the second race. I look forward to the next races, but I hope next year I can be part of the series again so I can race here again. Singapore is something special now after finishing on the podium two times.”

The race result means Keulen takes 35 points to go top of the T100 series standings, while Long goes second and one point behind Keulen in second after amassing 28 points, and Heemeryck took 25 points for coming third.

Attention now turns to the T100 race in San Francisco which takes place on June 7 and 8.

Cagliari equalise twice to deny Inter Milan victory late on

A late goal from Nicolas Viola secured Cagliari a 2-2 draw away to Inter Milan and frustrated the Serie A leaders’ as they march to the title.

The result moved the Nerazzurri to a 14-point lead over closest challengers AC Milan, though they can still seal the Scudetto in their next game. Cagliari remain in 14th position on 31 points, four points ahead of Frosinone in 18th.

It looked like business as usual for the season’s Serie A dominators after Marcus Thuram turned in Alexis Sanchez’s low cross to open the scoring inside the first 15 minutes. Nicolo Barella also had a looping header disallowed for offside. With top scorer Lautaro Martinez missing through suspension, Inter were missing a little firepower up top and could not carve out another clear-cut chance.

The Sardinian visitors were game and hit back clinically in the second half, as Eldor Shomurodov crashed in an equaliser from a Zito Luvumbo knock-down. The Angolan midfielder was Cagliari’s brightest spark, using his pace and power to create several chances.

Inter regained the lead 10 minutes later, as Hakan Calhanoglu converted a penalty awarded from a Yerry Mina handball. The Colombian centre-back protested vociferously – he knew little about it as Dimarco headed it directly onto his arm.

However, the away team showed their grit and resilience to ensure a point apiece, as substitute Viola crashed in the equaliser after a clever knockdown from strike partner Gianluca Lapadula. Cagliari didn’t have a glut of chances, but they certainly made the most of their few opportunities. The result means that Claudio Ranieri’s men have only lost one match in the last eight.

There will be no panic for runaway leaders Inter. With six games remaining in the season, the draw means that victory in their next game away to inter-city rivals and closest challengers AC Milan would be enough to give them the title. Lautaro Martinez, suspended for this encounter, will be available for selection.

Talking point – The power of subs

Nicolas Viola’s supersub reputation is secure. He has scored the most goals as a benchwarmer in Serie A this season, with five.

Alongside Gianluca Lapadula, their introductions were the right men coming on at the right time. Ranieri’s changes revitalised Cagliari and gave them the legs, the heart and the edge to take a valuable point. In fact, if Viola had directed his late chance either side of Sommer, it would have been all three. This is not canny Claudio’s first rodeo, of course.

In contrast, Simone Inzaghi’s second-half changes flattered to deceive. Marko Arnautovic was anonymous, not getting a sniff at goal.

Far from shoring up things, Carlos Augusto gave away possession in a couple of crucial moments while his team-mates poured forward for a winner and Denzel Dumfries didn’t have the same incisiveness as Matteo Darmian. Both moments of brilliance and intelligent game management were lacking from the team all round, but the fresh legs didn’t help them much either.

Player of the match – Marcus Thuram (Juventus)

The Frenchman’s movement and football brain was on show for the opener, ghosting into space at the perfect time to complete a simple, sweet passing move.

While he and Juventus missed the cutting edge of Lautaro Martinez at times, the 26-year-old’s showing was a reminder that they are far from a one-man band, as he linked up well with Alexis up top, even if more clear-cut chances were hard to come by.

Match highlights

12’ – Goal! Inter 1-0 Cagliari (Thuram): Marcus Thuram finished off a neat passing move for the home side. Alexis Sanchez was released down the right, sprinted to the byline and the French striker couldn’t miss his pinpoint ball in amid a statue-esque defence.

64’ – Goal! Inter 1-1 Cagliari (Shomurodov): Out of nowhere, the visitors levelled the match up. Uzbek frontman Eldor Shomurodov had the ball touched into his path on the edge of the box by Luvumbo and he lashed a fierce shot into the bottom-left corner past Sommer.

74’ – Goal! Inter 2-1 Cagliari (Calhanoglu pen): A Dimarco header hit the outstretched hand of his marker Yerry Mina. Penalty kick, which Hakan Calhanoglu coolly converted, driving the ball low into the right corner.

82’ – Goal! Inter 2-2 Cagliari (Viola): A flick-on came back into the box and was touched on by Lapadula, who cleverly used his strength and body to hold off centre-back Acerbi. It fell into the path of Nicolas Viola, who stroked the ball into the right corner to ensure a point apiece.

90+4’ – Missed chance! Viola could have been a two-goal hero, as Cagliari broke two-on-two and Lapadula sent in a well-weighted ball. However, the onrushing header was straight into the arms of the grateful Sommer from 14 yards out.

Vinales makes history with victory, Marc Marquez crashes out

Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing) stormed to victory at the Americas Grand Prix and made history as the first rider ever to win premier class GP races with three different manufacturers.

Starting from pole, Vinales had a horrendous getaway at lights out and dropped all the way down into 11th. However, the Aprilia rider cut his way back through the field and took the lead on Lap 13.

From there, Vinales didn’t look back and doubled up in Austin, having already won the Sprint on Saturday, while Marc Marquez crashed out with 10 laps to go.
