Arsenal v Chelsea – Premier League LIVE

Declan Rice, Ben White and an ever-improving partnership with William Saliba were all on the agenda when Arsenal’s Gabriel spoke to TNT Sports ahead of his side hosting Chelsea in the Premier League on Tuesday. The Brazilian 26-year-old has been part of a record-breaking defensive unit this season, with some remarkable stats underlining why they have been the most stingy outfit in the division.

Gabriel exclusive: Last year ‘difficult’ without Saliba but ‘great things’ possible this season

Gabriel says there are “great things to come” for Arsenal if they can end their Premier League season by winning all their final games, as he discussed how the Gunners’ defensive unit has improved this term.

Ahead of their crunch London derby clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, Mikel Arteta’s men are sitting top of the Premier League pile, and with Manchester City not in action until Thursday, Arsenal have the chance to go four points clear of Pep Guardiola’s team – who would, however, still have two games in hand.
Arsenal go into the final stretch hoping for a clean bill of health, something that wasn’t the case last season as Gabriel’s key defensive partner William Saliba suffered an injury during the loss to Sporting in the UEFA Europa League on March 16.

The Frenchman didn’t make a further appearance in the Premier League as City ultimately took their fifth title in six years.

Sitting down exclusively with TNT Sports at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground, Gabriel – in a wide-ranging conversation – first reflected on how Saliba’s absence affected the side at the back end of the previous campaign.

He said: “It was difficult for us because we were playing every match together, and of course things change when other players come in.

“For example Jakub [Kiwior] came in, he’s a left-sided defender and he came in on the right side. It was a bit difficult for him, but that’s gone now.

“We know we’re good and we must continue like that. We’ve got five games left [in the league] and we must continue together all season, because if we win those five matches, there are great things to come.”

Gabriel and Saliba have gone from strength to strength in 2023/24, as the Opta numbers demonstrate.

With Gabriel and Saliba starting Without one of Gabriel or Saliba
Games 56 15
Win ratio 73.2% 53.3%
Points per game 2.3 1.9
Average goals against 0.9 1.4
Shots conceded per game 8.4 9.9

In addition, their overall Expected Goals Against [xGA] number per 90 minutes this season is 0.69, compared to 1.11 in 2022/23.

“Last season it was our first one together. Already it was good, we understand each other very well on the pitch,” Gabriel said of his French defensive partner Saliba.

“This year I was sure that if we have people together it will go better, because we work a lot, we talk a lot, so that helps us.

“I think that this year, we also have a lot of confidence. We each have confidence in each other, confidence in any player that plays. So that’s good for us.”

Reflecting on how their backline has reached such a level, Gabriel continued: “Last season we were already good. William got injured, but we were good and we spoke a lot among ourselves.

“This year we are good even if we change our left back [or other positions].

“I think also there’s been a lot of work, everything that we work on it’s for defending well. As we play a lot together, we’re understanding each other better and that’s done us good.”

There have been other factors in the defensive improvement too, with Declan Rice’s arrival last summer positively affecting the team’s dynamism, solidity and variety.

And at right back, Ben White has not only been a continually vital component of the back four, but also a marauding presence down the right flank in tandem with Bukayo Saka.

Of Rice, Gabriel said: “He’s a leader. He’s an extraordinary player.

“I really love playing with him, because he has something different. Since arriving he’s helped us a lot.”

And on White, the Brazilian added: “Since Ben arrived at Arsenal, I think he’s been a very good player. He’s a very consistent player, he’s a player that plays every match.

“I think his consistency has grown, he’s not a player that plays a match at one level, and then another match at a different level. He’s always a high level, and I am happy to play with him.”

The goal, of course, is for the Gunners to cap off a hugely impressive couple of seasons by winning a Premier League crown.

They will, though, have to wrest it from the grasp of Guardiola’s City, and Gabriel discussed this ongoing pursuit of their rivals.

He said: “It’s hard, because they’re a team that’s been together a long time. They have players with a lot of quality, and it’s a team that’s always at the top, playing finals.

‘Phenomenal’ – Arteta praises Arsenal after fighting back to secure draw at Chelsea

“We do our work, we know it’s hard but of course we are happy to be at the top of the league and to play teams like them and to play at their level.”

Chelsea are the next obstacle in a tricky run-in that sees Arsenal also play Tottenham and Manchester United.

Chelsea and Arsenal met in the corresponding fixture on October 21, a 2-2 draw that saw Rice and Leandro Trossard strike late to rescue a point.

“We know tomorrow is going to be a big match,” Gabriel said. “They’re a big team, and they have a lot of players with a lot of quality.

“We must prepare well because it’s not going to be an easy match. It’s a team which puts a lot of quality into the game.”

Arsenal go back top of Premier League with victory over Wolves

Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard were on target as Arsenal earned a vital 2-0 win against Wolves at Molineux to return to the top of the Premier League.

After exiting the UEFA Champions League to Bayern Munich in midweek, this was the perfect response from Mikel Arteta’s side.

The Gunners enjoyed the best of the possession in the first half, but it was Wolves who came closest to breaking the deadlock when Joao Gomes’ close-range effort was tipped onto the post by David Raya.

In a first half where they needed to be patient, Arsenal remained persistent and eventually took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Trossard’s sliced effort crashed off the post and into the net.

Mikel Arteta’s side threatened to double their lead in a dominant second half, but Wolves managed to keep the Gunners at bay to remain in contention.

However, Arsenal finally broke the home side down for a second time when Odegaard rolled the ball into the net from a tight angle deep into added time.

The result means Arsenal go above Manchester City and into first place for the time being, as Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

Arsenal will have the chance to further extend their lead at the top of the table when they host Chelsea on Tuesday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Arsenal draw up summer transfer shortlist after Bayern defeat – Paper Round

Arsenal plan summer overhaul

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is planning to strengthen his forward line next season with a shortlist of names in the frame.

Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sekso, Pedro Neto, Alexander Isak, Nico Williamsand Martin Zubimendi are all suggested by the Mirror.

The paper writes: “Mikel Arteta will be given major funds to help bolster his strike force after Arsenal’s Champions League exit.

“Arsenal have been tracking Sporting Lisbon centre forward Viktor Gyokeres, RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and are long term admirers of Alexander Isak but Newcastle are unlikely to sell. Wolves winger Pedro Neto is top of their list of potential wide players but they have also scouted Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.

“Arsenal also want Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as part of their rebuild and a new partner for Declan Rice.”

Chelsea and more chase Sesko

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are all keen on RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenian forward is attracting interest after he continued to impress for his Bundesliga side.

The Evening Standard reports: “Arsenal are stepping up their plans to sign a forward this summer, with RB Leipzig frontman Benjamin Sesko on their radar.

“The Gunners are drawing up transfer plans after their Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

“Arsenal will face competition for the 20-year-old Slovenian, with Chelsea and Manchester United also tracking him.

“Sesko’s representatives have been guests at both Chelsea and Manchester United matches this season.”

Lijnders wanted by Besiktas

Besiktas hope to land Pep Lijnders when he leaves Liverpool along with Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman is looking for a fresh challenge and the Turkish side sacked Fernando Santos already this month.

The Athletic explains: “Besiktas are the latest club to show an interest in Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

“The Turkish club are searching for a new head coach after sacking Fernando Santos earlier this month, and they rate the Dutchman highly.

“Lijnders will leave Liverpool after a decade of service next month when the curtain comes down on Jurgen Klopp’s reign.

“The 41-year-old, who intends to pursue a managerial career of his own, is continuing to assess his options ahead of embarking on a new challenge this summer.

“He has also been linked with Ajax, who appointed John van ’t Schip as interim coach following the departure of Maurice Steijn earlier this season.”

Benitez set for Sao Paulo job

The Sun reports that former Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez is close to joining Sao Paulo as their new manager.

The experienced Spaniard left Celta Vigo a month ago and is already close to a new gig.

The paper states: “Rafa Benitez is the top candidate to take over as manager at Sao Paulo.

“Former Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton boss Benitez, 64, has been out of a job for a month after being sacked by Celta Vigo.

“Negotiations have been brokered by super agent Giuliano Bertolucci, who represents some of the best Brazilian players like Bruno Guimaraes, Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos.

“If Benitez signs with the Brazilian giants then he will be linking up with the same team that denied him the Club World Cup in 2005.”
