Arteta admits Arsenal ‘are still upset’ after Man City defeat

Mikel Arteta expressed his pride in Arsenal’s progress this season and how the players are not content to settle for second best.

The Gunners were humbled by a 4-1 defeat to Premier League title rivals Manchester City on April 26, but Arteta insists his players have a drive to compete at the highest level and remain as hungry as ever for success.

“Within the disappointment [after defeat to Manchester City] and the spirit around it, there are two things,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference.

Guardiola ‘can’t deny how important’ City v Arsenal title clash is

25/04/2023 AT 18:32

“Firstly, we need to recognise what a lot of people have done at the club to get us back into the Champions League. It was already a difficult thing to achieve and not a lot of people were optimistic that we had the ability to do that at the start of the season.

“So, the first thing is to recognise what a lot of good work people have done to try to achieve that.

“The second thing, which is what I like the most, is that even after achieving that with six games to go – something that I don’t think has been done in more than a decade at this club – we are still not satisfied, we are still upset and we want more.

“We want to be consistently [competing] with the best. That is the mentality that we need and that is what I have loved more over the last few days.”

The Premier League title is now in City’s hands, with Pep Guardiola’s men moving top of the table with a 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.

However, Arteta is refusing to give up the challenge yet and feels that an historic first title in 19 years is still achievable for the Gunners.

He continued: “We have achieved what is difficult to achieve and we can still achieve the Premier League because there is five games to go and a lot of things are going to happen still.

“What we have to do is forget about what happened last week, learn from it and move on into the next game at home in a London derby and put things right.”

Arsenal will face a Chelsea side in free-fall at the Emirates on Tuesday night, after losing all five league and cup games since Frank Lampard returned to become interim manager.

Arteta’s men have also won five of the past six meetings between the two clubs in all competitions, but will be looking to arrest their own four-match winless run themselves in a bid to keep the title race alive.

Arteta confirmed that defender William Saliba will not be available for the match.

Gegen West Ham (3. Mai) und Leeds (6. Mai) warten kurz nacheinander zwei Heimspiele. “Wir dürfen unseren Fokus nicht verlieren.”

Guardiola ‘can’t deny how important’ City v Arsenal title clash is

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that he “cannot deny how important” the top-of-the-table clash with Arsenal is in the Premier League title race.

The two clubs are separated by five points with City in the unfamiliar position of second place after Mikel Arteta’s club impressed in the early stages of the season.

However, City have two games in hand and the two play in the Premier League on Wednesday night in a match that could go a long way to deciding who wins the 2022/23 title.

‘I love my players more than ever’ – Arteta praises Arsenal team despite draw

21/04/2023 AT 21:55

Arsenal have drawn their last three league games, against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton, and Guardiola’s side are now considered the favourites.

The Spaniard told a press conference: “It is really important, not decisive, because there are still many tough games for both sides. We have more games to play, but we cannot deny how important it is.

“I think Mikel brought them another dimension. The fact is they are huge competitors in all senses. They are so aggressive, they were able to go to Anfield a few weeks ago, and a team [Liverpool], maybe the best in the last years for winning the second balls, long balls, second balls, transitions – Arsenal were better.

“So in terms of winning duels, they were better – especially in that part of the game. So, yeah, they control all the aspects and we felt it. It is not… I did not say anything new. In the two games we have played this season, we felt it.”

Discussing his former assistant coach, Arteta, he added: “So I had the feeling that Mikel changed the structure of the club, the mentality of the club – not just 4-3-3, 4-2-3, this build-up, long balls or whatever.

“So a lot of decisions, changed a lot of players, and with incredible support – I guess from outside, I did not speak about this with him – support from the hierarchy of the club. That is why the success is there.”

‘I love my players more than ever’ – Arteta praises Arsenal team despite draw

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team were “disappointed” with a 3-3 draw against Southampton but claimed he “loved” his players.

For much of the second half his team looked set for a dispiriting home defeat but two late goals, the first from Martin Odegaard and the second from Bukayo Saka meant that the points were shared.

A point does not change the fact that Manchester City can go top if they win their game in hand, and the two sides meet next Wednesday, but Arteta had mixed opinions.

He told Sky Sports: “Obviously unhappy with the result, We made it very difficult again for ourselves but mistakes are part of football but the way we reacted I love my players more than ever.

“It is incredible, we were on the way back, we conceded again with a sloppy goal but in the end we should have won the game. We created enough chances and opportunities but it didn’t happen and we are disappointed.

“You can’t concede three goals in this league, if you concede three like we did in a sloppy way it is very difficult to win matches.

“This young team reacts in a way that is incredible, when it is against the odds but the chances they created and the spirit they had it was a joy to watch. The message is clear that I love them.

“We are down and they are more willing than anybody to win it. You can see that spirit and fight in the dressing room but it is clear we have to do defensively things better.”

Jesus: Arsenal ‘will fight until the end’ for Premier League title despite Southampton draw

Gabriel Jesus said that Arsenal would “fight until the end” after stumbling to a 3-3 draw against Southampton on Friday night.

Arsenal were 3-1 down with two minutes of regulation time still to play, but Martin Odegaard gave the home side hope.

Two minutes later, Bukayo Saka popped up with a leveller to rescue a point for Mikel Arteta’s side.

That left Arsenal five points clear at the top of the league, but their position is by no means assured.

On Wednesday, Arsenal travel to Manchester City for a top-of-the-table clash but a win for City would mean that Pep Guardiola’s men could go four points clear if they win their games in hand on the current league leaders.

Speaking after the match, Brazilian striker Jesus – a former City player – refused to give up hope.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “A lot of things are going on now. We don’t want to come here and talk negatively because we are very positive, what we are doing this season is amazing. The Premier League is tough.

“Now is the difficult moment. It is time now to stick together until the end. We still have a lot of things to do this season, it is not over, we are still five points clear. Manchester City have two games in hand but if we want to be champions we have to go there to win the game – that is all.

“We are the youngest team in the league, not making excuses. Sometimes we do right and sometimes we do wrong, everyone can make mistakes that is why it is so important to stick together.

“Everything can happen. Obviously we are not happy with the last three games, we dropped points and we know this is true, no one has to tell us. We dropped a little bit of our level and focus, this is the Premier League, it is so difficult to win this competition.

“We are still there, we are still fighting and we will fight until the end.”

Arsenal ready for Tielemans bargain transfer this summer – Paper Round

Tielemans ready for Arsenal move

Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans is keen on a move to Arsenal, or another club with Champions League football next season. The Daily Mail reports that the 25-year-old Belgian international is preparing to move on as his contract is a year from expiring, meaning he can negotiate a free transfer from January next year. Arsenal are keen to strike a bargain deal for him now.

Paper Round’s view: Tielemans has not been at his best this season, but neither have Leicester City. If Arsenal – or any other suitor – can get hold of him for a reasonable price and without going overboard on wages then they have a potentially brilliant player for less than he would normally cost. The need for Champions League football will focus Arteta’s mind.

Mbappe visits Madrid

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Kylian Mbappe sparked speculation after he visited Madrid earlier in the week. The 23-year-old French international forward visited the Spanish capital – and the home of Real Madrid, who are keen on signing the player this summer on a free contract – and he avoided meeting the president of Paris Saint-Germain, who was in town at the same time.

Paper Round’s view: It looks almost inevitable that Mbappe will join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, though rumours rumble on of PSG putting together an enormous financial package to persuade him to stay on for a year or two longer. Mbappe holds all the cards and if he is visiting the city even before his move away, his current club should be worried.

Pepe in, Pepe out at Arsenal

The Mirror claims that Arsenal are considering a bid for Porto’s 25-year-old Brazilian winger Pepe, with various suggestions that he has a release clause of between 50 and 60 million euros. He would be brought in as a replacement for Arsenal’s own Pepe, Nicolas, who has failed to impress since his £72 million move from Lille, and who could be sold for just £25m this summer.

Paper Round’s view: While there is no indication that Arsenal’s Pepe has been anything other than a professional, he has not been able to get much joy at the English club and the time has come for him to move on and try somewhere new. As for Porto’s Pepe, at 25 he needs to move on to a big club and a bigger platform before he becomes too old to be considered.

Rudiger’s huge release clause

The Sun reports on the huge deal that has seen Antonio Rudiger apparently commit to joining Real Madrid this summer. The 29-year-old German international will sign until 2026, and earn £400,000-a-week wages to do so. Beyond that, the player will also have a release clause worth £340m, which will essentially rule him out of a sale on anything but Real’s terms.

Paper Round’s view: Rudiger has improved rapidly over the last couple of years and if he is taking care of his fitness and health, then he should be able to perform at the highest level for a few years yet. But clubs are often burned when they shell out for players who are approaching 30, and if he starts to fall off then Real will be lumbered with a massive liability.
