Isak bags double as clinical Newcastle hit four past sloppy Spurs

Newcastle United moved up to sixth place in the Premier League with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Spurs at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak scored a brace for the home team with a smartly taken finish in each half. His goals came either side of an Anthony Gordon effort. The rout was completed with a late header from Fabian Schar from a corner.

The defeat could have been heavier for Spurs, as Newcastle missed opportunities from set pieces and Emil Krafth hit the post ten minutes from time.

In the first half Timo Werner missed a good chance for Spurs before Isak opened the scoring. Newcastle quickly went two ahead when Gordon beat Micky van de Ven and powered a shot past Guglielmo Vicario.

The two goals from Isak put him on 17 in the Premier League this season, just two behind Erling Haaland in the race for the golden boot.

TALKING POINT

Trouble ahead for Tottenham? Having worked so hard all season to get into the guaranteed Champions League qualifying places, Ange Postecoglou’s team today slid back to fifth by dint of shipping four to Newcastle.

Recovering quickly from this is imperative for Spurs, but they face a brutal run of fixtures in which to do so. Their next match is the North London derby at home, followed by away trips to Chelsea and Liverpool; they also have a home game with Manchester City beyond that.

Every point is vital at this stage of the season. With European results this week making the prospect of an extra place in the Champions League for finishing fifth look uncertain, if Spurs are to be in the competition next season they’re going to have to do it the hard way.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United)

Is Gordon going to the Euros? On the strength of today’s performance he looks nailed on for the squad in Germany. He set up Isak’s first and fired in the corner for Schar’s goal, as well as adding a goal of his own with a smart finish. He was a constant menace throughout.

Postecoglou exclusive: Spurs boss on chasing ‘ultimate goal’ of Premier League glory

Ange Postecoglou has promised to match his young side’s ambition as he chases the “ultimate goal” of winning the Premier League with Tottenham.

In a wide-ranging interview with TNT Sports ahead of Spurs’ trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, Postecoglou said he wanted his team to rival the consistency shown by runaway trio Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, while he reserved special praise for “outstanding” newcomers Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven.

Spurs last won a league title over 60 years ago and have only fleetingly flirted with the Premier League trophy, coming closest in 2015-16 under Mauricio Pochettino before being pipped by 5000-1 shots Leicester City. Their last trophy arrived via the League Cup in 2008.

“Look, you try and win every competition you’re in,” Postecoglou said ahead of the trip to St James’ Park, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

“But ultimately for me, it’s about trying to make this club champion of the Premier League. I think that’s got to be the ultimate goal.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t have success in other competitions. I think that helps with growth because if you can gain some sort of success in a cup competition or in Europe, that helps build belief.

“It’s not easy, you’re competing against some top clubs that have been at this a lot longer in terms of building squads and building teams, so we’ve got a bit of catching up to do.”

Postecoglou and Tottenham’s challenge is an ominous one.

Defending champions Manchester City are in their eighth season of the Pep Guardiola project, Arsenal are in their fourth full campaign under Mikel Arteta and although Jurgen Klopp’s nine-year reign at Anfield is drawing to a close, he will leave a team packed with quality. By comparison, Postecoglou has just entered his 11th month in charge of Spurs.

“That’s the most challenging bit, to get to where they are on a consistent basis,” he said.

“In a one-off year, maybe you could do it. But a consistent basis is where we should try and pitch ourselves.”

Asked what one change might help haul Spurs into title contention next season, he said: “Where we are at the moment, in terms of the squad and where we are with our football, we’re a fair way away from it being one or two crucial things [that need to happen].

“I don’t dismiss the fact that maybe we can do it next year but when you look at the other teams we are competing with – they’ve been doing it for four, five, six, seven years.

“It’s only after you’ve been there at least three or four years that you can start thinking about ‘maybe there’s a missing piece’. It’s more about looking at the broad subject of how we’re going to become a club that can compete at that level.”

Postecoglou’s arrival last summer heralded a belated return to attacking football – dubbed ‘Ange Ball’ by supporters – after a largely bleak period under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, briefly, and Antonio Conte.

His side made a lightning start to the campaign and were top after 10 games until a wild 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in November saw the bubble burst and left the Australian without a number of first-team stars through injury and suspension, prompting a dip in form.

They have since recovered to sit fourth, level on points with fifth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand, as they look to return to the UEFA Champions League.

Postecoglou claimed he “couldn’t care less about the race for top four” after last week’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, although he clarified those remarks ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

“It’s not that I don’t care about it, it’s just not our ultimate ambition,” he said.

“Finishing top four would signal that we’ve made progress but it’s not a destination point for us, so I’ve been reticent to use that as a marker that we’ve somehow been successful.

“But it’s still important; if we finish top four this year it means we’ve made progress from last year and gives us foundations for next year, but no guarantees.”

He added: “Especially for a club like this, if you go through two or three disappointing years it can be really hard to get back up there. So I thought it was important we at least got back to a decent level this year and it’s a credit to everyone that we have done that, giving our supporters some hope.

“But we’ve got to really build on that to make sure it’s sustainable rather than a one-year thing.”

‘Outstanding’ Vicario and Van de Ven showcase ‘beauty’ of Spurs squad

Two of Spurs’ most influential additions under Postecoglou have been in defence, with Vicario filling the void of long-serving captain Hugo Lloris in goal and Van de Ven starring either side of a hamstring injury in central defence.

Vicario, a summer signing from Serie A side Empoli, has been targeted in recent weeks from set-pieces, but Postecoglou has been impressed with how the Italian has responded.

“For the most part he’s handled it pretty well,” he said.

“What I’ve loved about Vic is whenever that’s happened, the next ball that’s come in he’s gone for it again. It can’t be underestimated the impact he’s had, when you talk about a goalkeeper who has never played in the Premier League before… and he hasn’t come in from a massive club, only one or two years of Serie A experience, I just think he’s been outstanding.

“There have been a lot of games this year where he’s pretty much kept us in it with a big save or a big moment. For a goalkeeper in his first year of Premier League, still very young in terms of maturity and experience at the top level, I think he’s been brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Van de Ven has excelled in Postecoglou’s high line and grabbed his first Spurs goal with a rocket in the win over Forest.

“He’s been outstanding. I’m reluctant to say how good he can be because I don’t know and I would hate to put a limit on it,” said Postecoglou.

“When you look at him and his background, he’s had one year in the Bundesliga, again not at a massive club [Wolfsburg], and he’s come to the Premier League. His growth through this year has just been outstanding for us.

“People talk about his speed and his ability to defend in one-on-one situations but everything about him is improving – his passing, his ball carrying, his physicality, and he’s great to work with. He wants to improve every day.

“That’s the beauty of this squad. Although I flagged that we’ve still got a long way to go, there’s a core group of players who are in their first or second year of Premier League football, who have already set a pretty high benchmark.

“Looking at them as personalities, it hasn’t got to them at all. They just feel like they’ve got so much more to improve. That’s the exciting bit for us.

“The responsibility I have is to make sure we let these guys grow and match their ambition for us as a club. They can all be really top, top players.”

Exclusive: Barnes outlines ‘dream’ of playing for England, says Guimaraes ‘committed’ to Newcastle

Harvey Barnes has had a frustrating season with injuries but the Newcastle winger insists he can still finish the campaign on a high and help Eddie Howe’s side achieve their goals.

The 26-year-old – who was signed from Leicester last summer for a fee reported to be around £39 million – made a blistering start to his career at Newcastle with a goal and an assist in the statement 5-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the campaign.

However, in September, he was forced off after just 12 minutes at Sheffield United after tearing ligaments under his toe, ruling him out for four months – missing 26 games in total.

Having to contend with a remarkable number of injuries to his squad, Magpies boss Howe – who described the situation as “unprecedented” in November – has fallen significantly short of helping the club retain their place in the UEFA Champions League.

But a recent upsurge in form, including a thrilling 4-3 victory over West Ham – with Barnes scoring twice, including a stoppage-time winner – has helped propel the North East club back into the European picture.
Currently, Newcastle are eighth and could leapfrog Manchester United into sixth with victory over Tottenham at St James’ Park in Saturday’s early kick-off, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

With Barnes back fit and firing, he believes he can contribute to Newcastle finishing the season on a high.

“Even though we’ve had a lot of problems this year, we still find ourselves in a really good position,” he told TNT Sports in an exclusive interview. “We’ve got seven games left, so it’s important to finish as high in the league as we can, and Europe is a great target for us.

“It sets us up for next season if we can get that, so it’s about picking up as many points as we can and give ourselves the best chance.

“After a tough season for the team, with the injuries, all these factors, we still find ourselves in a position where we can finish really strongly and still achieve some great things this year.”

Summing up his emotions after coming off the bench to score twice in the enthralling win over West Ham in March, Barnes continued: “Personally for me it was such a great day with scoring two goals.

“Helping the team is something I’ve obviously not been able to do much this year with the injuries. So that made the moment even more special.

“It’s something I know I’m capable of doing on the pitch, but this year has been so frustrating, not having those opportunities to go and showcase to the team and fans, and help the team out in that way.”

A 20-yard strike in added time was a particularly special way to secure all three points for Newcastle.

“It was one of those where you know you’ve hit it so well it’s going to go in. It was obviously a good strike. To score a last-minute winner is great but in that sort of fashion, it was amazing,” beamed Barnes.

In each of the last three seasons, Barnes has hit double figures in terms of goals scored and the Burnley native admits that contributing in attack has been something he has worked hard on during his career.

“It’s always something I have demanded of myself,” he said.

“Goals are something I know I need to bring to the team. I love scoring goals, there’s no better feeling as an attacking player than contributing to the team, scoring goals or getting assists.

“They are the moments that you play for, really.”

Looking ahead, Barnes is determined to stay clear of injuries and cement a place in Newcastle’s starting XI, and having witnessed team-mate Anthony Gordon make his England debut against Brazil last month, he also wants to work his way into the England set-up.

“Ant has had a really good season so that was definitely something he deserved. It’s obviously a great moment for him to make his England debut,” he said of Gordon’s call-up.

“His team-mates and the manager were really proud of him for that, it’s a great achievement and it’s been a pleasure to play with him this year.”

On his own international ambitions, Barnes continued: “There’s definitely pathways in there when you play well and hit a bit of form.

“As long as you are doing it for your club and showing everyone why you can be in there, the manager [Gareth Southgate] will pick you. He’s shown that over the years, so personally, yeah, hopefully I can finish the season strongly and give myself a great summer going into next season.

“I think for sure I can have an impact for Newcastle and have a great season next year which can hopefully lead on to that process.

“Of course that’s the dream of any player to play for England and I believe when I’m playing well enough there’s no reason why I can’t be involved.”

‘You want to keep the best players at the club’

Barnes is clearly settling in well in the North East but there has been speculation that two of the club’s star players, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, could depart this summer.

Guimaraes – who only signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle last October – has only missed one Premier League game so far this season, while Isak has netted 15 goals in 23 league games.

But Barnes has no worries about either player, insisting they are “fully committed”.

He said: “I think we can see week in and week out the quality they can bring. They’re big players for us and they’ve been consistently good this year which has been important for us.

“I think you can see from playing with them on the training pitch week in and week out that they’re fully committed and happy here. As players, that’s all we can really take from that. They have shown no signs of anything else.

“You want to keep the best players at the club. Until something changes in that aspect we’ll enjoy playing with them and enjoy playing as a team.”

Newcastle United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday knowing a win would lift them into the top six.

Eddie Howe’s side are chasing back-to-back European finishes following a turbulent season, which saw the club finish bottom of their UEFA Champions League group.

An injury-hit Newcastle have been drifting towards the bottom half of the table in recent months, but two wins and a draw in their last three games has got The Magpies back on track.

With seven games remaining, it looks as though Newcastle are primed to compete with Manchester United and West Ham United for a spot in the UEFA Europa League.

A return to the Champions League is probably a step too far for Howe’s side this season, but Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs outfit can strengthen their grip on the top four with a win.

They currently occupy the fourth spot and are level on points with fifth-place Aston Villa (60), while an 11-point gap separates them and sixth-place Man Utd.

Villa drop points in dramatic draw, Luton snatch late winner to boost survival hopes

Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa suffered a blow to their top-four hopes despite leading by two goals in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Brentford at Villa Park.

Thomas Frank left Ivan Toney on the bench, which gave Watkins the chance to impress as the pair compete for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Watkins got off to a fine start on his return from injury with a goal to put the hosts ahead when his close-range header narrowly crossed the line at the front post.

A minute into the second half, Morgan Rogers brilliantly doubled Villa’s lead when he latched onto Youri Tielemans’ through ball before lashing a strike into the bottom-right corner.

Mathias Jorgensen pulled a goal back for Brentford, scrappily turning in Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross, before the visitors completed the comeback two minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo’s volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Remarkably, Brentford took the lead shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa tapped Sergio Reguilon’s dangerous cross into an empty net.

However, Watkins grabbed his second of the game with 10 minutes left on the clock to save Unai Emery’s side from defeat and earn what could be an invaluable point.

The result leaves Villa just three points ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in fifth place, and Spurs have two games in hand.

Hatters claim big win

At the bottom of the table, Luton Town came from behind to secure a huge three points in their bid for survival following a 2-1 victory against Bournemouth at Kenilworth Road.

After a goalless opening period, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead five minutes into the second half with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards out.

Luton hit back through Jordan Clark, who made an excellent run through the midfield before laying the ball to Luke Berry, who was almost dispossessed, but Clark was in the right place at the right time to wrap his foot around the loose ball and fire past Neto.

As the game entered added time, substitute Cauley Woodrow floated an inviting ball into the box which Luton captain Carlton Morris turned in from close range.

Rob Edwards’ side remain in the bottom three, but are now six points clear of 19th place Burnley and level on points with Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Hammers win after late drama

West Ham United came from behind to win 2-1 at Wolves, despite some late VAR controversy.

Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead from the spot before Lucas Paqueta did the same for The Hammers as the game entered the latter stages.

James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead in memorable fashion, as his corner from the left swirled over everyone in the box and directly into the top-right corner.

Wolves thought they had grabbed an equaliser in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but Max Kilman’s header was dramatically ruled out for offside.

Newcastle claim narrow win

In west London, Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal gave Newcastle a 1-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage for their first away victory since February.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead through Fabian Schar who found the net from a tight angle, but the goal was ruled out due to Dan Burn’s foul on Calvin Bassey in the build-up.

But Fulham could not keep Newcastle out for much longer, as Guimaraes fired Newcastle ahead in the 81st minute.

Everton win relegation battle with Burnley

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat 10-man Burnley 1-0 for their first victory in 10 matches.

As Sean Dyche’s side held on for a much-needed three points, Dara O’Shea was given a straight red card for a strong challenge on Dwight McNeil.
