Spurs ease to win over Forest to boost top-four push

Tottenham moved above Aston Villa and into fourth after deservedly beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 in an entertaining match.

Ange Postecoglou’s side wobbled badly towards the end of the first half, when Forest should have gone ahead, but regained control after the break and deserved their victory.

The home side dominated early on with their usual slick passing and movement, although they almost went behind when Forest’s Brazilian centre-back Murillo shot just wide from – this is not a misprint – 80 yards. A few minutes later Murillo scored at the wrong end, diverting a dangerous cross from Timo Werner past the Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.

Chris Wood’s clinical equaliser came against the run of play and stunned Spurs, who were outplayed for the rest of the first half. Wood should have scored a second but indulgently battered a shot against the post from four yards.

Postecoglou made two midfield changes at half-time, bringing on Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Spurs took charge. If the midfielders gave them control, the defenders got the goals. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro blasted two in seven minutes, and Forest never really looked like staging a comeback.

The result moves Spurs ahead of Villa on goal difference, with a game in hand. Forest stay 17th, above Luton on goal difference, though the picture will change if Everton have more points deducted this week.

Late McBurnie goal earns point for struggling Blades against Chelsea

Oli McBurnie stole an equaliser deep into added time to snatch a point for Sheffield United in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Thiago Silva was back in the Chelsea side for the first time since February and marked his return with a goal, guiding Conor Gallagher’s delivery into the bottom-right corner with a volley to give the visitors an early lead.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side could not hold on for long, as Jayden Bogle ran onto a wonderful Gustavo Hamer through ball before thumping a strike towards the near post from a tight angle, which Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic could only turn into his own net.

The momentum was back with Chelsea in the second half and Noni Madueke put the visitors back in front when he cut inside the box on his left foot before lashing an effort beyond Ivo Grbic.

Sheffield United hit back again, equalising through McBurnie’s close-range finish in the 93rd minute to seal a point.

The result will do wonders for Sheffield United’s momentum as they continue their unlikely survival bid. They are now nine points from safety with seven games to play.

Salah penalty rescues point for Liverpool after Mainoo wondergoal for United

Mo Salah struck a late leveller for Liverpool as their Premier League title hopes suffered a blow following a pulsating 2-2 draw at Manchester United.

United had an early goal from Alejandro Garnacho ruled out for offside before the visitors took charge of the first half. Dominik Szoboszlai and Salah both went close before Luis Diaz opened the scoring on 23 minutes when he hooked in Darwin Nunez’s flick-on from a right-wing corner.

Much to Klopp’s chagrin, Liverpool continued to waste openings to hammer home their dominance with 15 shots to the hosts’ zero leaving the door ajar for a recovery similar to the one that saw United turn around the FA Cup tie three weeks earlier.

Indeed, the hosts were back in it on 50 minutes when Bruno Fernandes’ sumptuous long-range lob caught Caoimhin Kelleher off his line after a howler of a pass from Jarell Quansah.

United then stole in front through Kobbie Mainoo’s wonderful curler on 67 minutes, but the visitors avoided the disaster of defeat when Salah stroked home a spot kick six minutes from time.

The result means Arsenal remain top of the table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference with seven matches to play. Reigning champions Manchester City are a point further back in third while United stay sixth and are 11 points adrift of fourth-place Aston Villa having played a game fewer.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg with Atalanta prior to a Premier League clash at home to Crystal Palace next Sunday. United visit Bournemouth on Saturday.
